This review is for selling items. Went in around 12:30ish. Not busy and no line to sell. The process was quick, but I will say that I was surprised at how non-thorough the buyer was. I.E. she didn't even unfold anything to really look at it. I had some nice pants (denim) and even J. Brand jeans, but she passed on them. I had 50+ items for her to look through, so I understand that a) having a discerning eye is quite important b) speed is of the essence. But like I said, there was no to-sell line, I was the only one doing it. When I asked her to specify why there wasn't anything of interest, she said that they weren't on trend, which struck me as odd considering Buffalo Exchange is known for being eclectic. Smaller storefront than other Buffalo Exchanges I've been to, but well organized otherwise. I've seen reviews that rant about the prices here, but I think they are reasonable for the nicer items. Got two tops for $35, and both were new with tags. Considering I would have paid much more to purchase them at a regular retailer, I'm not complaining. Don't come here expecting Goodwill prices - go to the actual Goodwill down the block for that. Service was also very friendly. Tons of fitting rooms in the back as well! read more

I've been to so many Buffalo Exchanges and it seems like every time I go it gets better & better. The store was so nicely organized and the staff was friendly and well stocked. I got a dressing room right away & ended up purchasing almost everything I was internally searching for. Really more of a 3.5 This is a going to be a review from my perspective as a seller. I've sold here many times so I'm pretty experienced with the routine. First of all, check your dignity and ego at the door and grab a number to save your spot in line. They're here to make a profit. Don't take it personally if the buyer doesn't take as many of your things as you expected. Just because you think your fashion style is the shit, that doesn't mean that they're necessarily looking to buy what you've got. Face it. If your swag really were so amazing, why the hell are you trying to get rid of it? Don't bring things in that you wouldn't want to wear yourself and expect them to buy it. Let's be real. If you're bringing your stuff in here, it's probably stuff you're not going to miss much anyways. So come here with the right attitude and you'll be happy. In my case, I was purging my closet of nice clothes that simply don't fit me anymore. I lost a lot of weight this year so I've had lots of nice clothes that I like but can't wear anymore because of fit and they were taking up valuable space in my closet. From my past experience of selling, I've noticed that they tend to buy by season and for styles that cater to their clientele in the area. So if you come here, bring clothes that you would see folks in the Haight wearing. Think along the lines of hippie, hipster, slightly alternative, and kind of kitsch, such as crazy costume pieces. For example, I bought in a pair of Tripp boots here that the seller went crazy for. They were boots with a 4 inch heel, a massive platform, and crazy spikes and pyramids all over the shoe. By contrast, Crossroads which is a few doors down, seems to buy more by trend and what's in style. For example, I had a pair of Diesel pants that got rejected here but Crossroads bought them. So just because your stuff is designer or high end, that doesn't mean that they will buy it here just for the label. I've read in a few reviews of people complaining that they don't buy high street clothes from retailers like H&M and Forever 21. This is simply not true in my experience. A lot of the clothes they bought from me were actually from H&M and Forever 21. They were clothes that were clean, showed little signs of wear, and were on trend. For the most part, the buyers I've interacted with here have always been cordial. I've only interacted with 1 somewhat rude buyer and that was a long time ago. Everyone else has been reasonably friendly. Even with my extremely outdated pieces, I've never felt judged. If they don't want something, they always fold it up neatly and set it aside for you to put away. Most recently, I worked with Kathlena. She's the store manager and she was really sweet. For the boots that I was selling, which were on trend and new, she explained that they were very nice but they were overstocked on boots at the moment. I also appreciate the fact that they tell you how much they're going to sell your stuff for as they buy them. At Crossroads, the whole transaction is done in silence. You get 35% cash and 50% trade. So to reiterate, here's a handy checklist for prospective sellers: -Grab a number right when you come in to secure your spot. -Come here with a positive attitude and don't act like a diva if the seller isn't buying as much of your stuff as you thought they would. Having a shitty attitude is just going to annoy the buyer. -I suggest bringing your stuff here in a rolling suitcase or a duffel bag. I've seen so many people bring their stuff here in trash bags. If you treat your stuff like it's trash, how do you expect the seller to view your stuff?! -Bring in clothes that are clean and not extremely worn. Nothing with stains, holes, weird smells, broken zippers, missing buttons, or just looks generally disgusting. -Keep your expectations low for price. If you're starved for cash, this is not your place. If you're just looking to make some extra money and clean out your closet, you've got the right attitude. -If your stuff doesn't sell here, take what you have left down to Crossroads which is a few shops down. -Donate the stuff you have left that you don't want to Goodwill, which is 1 block away. read more

To the idiots giving low ratings because they wouldn't buy your crappy clothes: This is not the Goodwill store. They will only buy clothes that they think people will actually wear. When you're trying to get rid of clothes, you need to make TWO piles. Pile 1 is stuff that is no longer your style but is still good condition, cute clothes. Helps if you have good name brand clothing that is in season. Pile 2 is weird crap you and no one else would wear. Pile 2 goes to Goodwill, Pile 1 goes to Buffalo. Don't bring in clothes that are all crappy, when you KNOW they're crappy, and get all pissed when they don't buy your crappy crap. That being said, this is where I do my main shop. I especially come here for jeans, t-shirts, skirts and jackets. Low prices, and I almost never leave empty-handed. Service here is also friendly and helpful! The only thing I wish they would do differently is the sizing of their jeans. I can get 10 pairs of jeans that are allegedly the same "size", but some are baggy, some are so small I can't get it up past my knees, maybe 1 or 2 will actually be the advertised size. What's size 4 in one brand is not size 4 in another. They should get out a tape measure and figure out the waists on these, and do the sizes that way. The store was disappointing. Some of the tops had stains but were still over ten-fifteen dollars. The lady said that they were that cheap because they were "as is". Prices here are crazy expensive. (for a thrift store) Why would I pay $22-$25 for a USED shirt, when I can buy a brand new one (just as cute) at Union Square for half that. I came in with a bag of around 20 pieces to sell. The wait was a bit long because they were quite busy and short staffed. They took a lot of my items and I got a total of $39 cash. The woman than helped me was friendly but also pretty judgy. I'm glad I got a lot of things off my hands. The organized of the store is quite odd. The register is right by the door and towards the back of the store it is divided into two sides. One side, behind the register, has women's tops and dresses. The other side of the wall is women's bottoms and shoes. Toward the front, across from the register is the men's section. It seems that they prefer to purchase trendy brand items like American Apparel and new clothing. They took 2 new with tags sequin dresses (one from Bebe) despite it not being the holiday season. The man who went before me had boxes and boxes of items but they only took in 2 pieces so they can be pretty picky too. read more

Maybe I'm just bitter, but the buyers here seemed a little out of touch. I brought 3 bags of clothes to try and sell, and there was (what I thought to be) a lot of good stuff in them. By "good" I mean expensive, fairly new (within the last 2 years), and rarely worn. They rejected a pair of expensive designer shoes because "yellow is a hard sell" and "pointy toes" aren't so popular anymore. They also rejected a pair of never worn dickies jeans because "they're a pretty big size" (13). I was also offered $8 for a $200 coat. I don't know...it seems like a lot of the stuff in the store was a lot more raggedy and "out of fashion" than the stuff I brought in. And chunky girls like to shop too, 13 is not a ridiculous size to carry. So I would have just given one star, because I'm mad. But then I have to give them the other one, because I'm mad and that could be affecting my judgment. read more

This location is more of a Burning Man/Grown-up Goth, and Homeless-esque clothing and accessory location than the other Buffalos I've been used to in the past. I am trying to rid my closet and life of all unnecessary "stuff" I've been holding on to as a metaphor for all of the "stuff" I've been holding on to emotionally (there I go with my psychobabble...I'll save it for work from here on out). Fortunately for me, most of my "stuff" (clothes, shoes, and bags) is super high-end designer or mid-tier goodies that still have tags or have never been used, not once. Unfortunately for me, these folks aren't interested and what they are interested in, they won't pay a slave's wages for. I don't like their inventory and I don't really like the fact that they see passing my Ted Baker, Ralph Lauren purple label, or Proenza Schouler fit. The staff is really nice, though, and they did give me a measly $18 for some furry boot covers and a pair of platform lucite heels I never wore and some other stuff I didn't particularly care about so all was not lost, I suppose. Three stars for the polite and friendly service, and the two stars I've subtracted are simply because I don't care for their inventory and I'm a little bummed that they don't like my goods :) read more

I mean, super obvs. Girl at the cashier didn't give me ANY acknowledgement the 3 minutes I was there even though I was in her range of vision. It could be that I wasn't the most well dressed that day but I'll give the cashier the benefit of the doubt and not that take that into account. It could've also been that it was 40 minutes to closing.. but really, not even a smile, an offer to drop-off or even a friendly, "Come back tomorrow?" No thanks. Maybe at one of those "mildly amusing" hours they have at bars in the Fi-di (note: Mildly amusing hours are those minuscule discount hours masquerading as a happy hour. Wedged between held over and wasteland down the street, buffalo exchange is that place you go to somewhere along the usual costume hunting trip- hoping you'll find that accesory or that last missing piece of a costume. Usually its more miss than hit, but every so often you can hit a double- like I did this time! What- kind reader- can 5 bucks at buffalo exchange get you? A heaping pile of hilarity for a costume. This year, as part of a team costume, I was an old school robber (complete with loot sack), and the missing piece- the stripey black and white shirt. Well, i found one here I thought was perfect...until i got it home and realized the sexy scoop neck accented my chest hair to the point that fabio would be jealous. Even better, at bissap bao bao on a friday night, i ran into a girl who had the same top- minus it being a costume. cost of the shirt? 5 dollars. realizing someone actually paid a lot more thinking it was in style. priceless. read more

I brought 2 pairs of brand new Rock 'N Republic jeans to Crossroads and they made me an offer. Then I took them to Buffalo and Buffalo offered more. Yay! Buffalo FTW. Buffalo offers significantly more if you choose a credit for the store instead of cash, but it's a place that requires lots of patience to flip through their racks--it's less organized than crossroads--but when you find hidden treasures, it's worth the time. read more

There was someone with a "buyer" name tag, but you wouldn't know it by her actions. While 4 people waited to sell, she chatted endlessly with a friend. I know all about the photo shoot she's doing on Saturday, and what time, and what he should bring. She would also randomly wander off into the back of the store and move clothes from one rack to the other. How about do that stuff when there's no one waiting to sell? Or maybe get some of the other people in the store to do it rather than randomly wandering out of the store and/or doing absolutely nothing? I left. Honestly I feel kind of bad about leaving a negative review here. On the other hand though, maybe this will help them improve some things... The clothing selection here is generally alright, but nothing really to write home about. However, this review is mainly about selling your clothes at Buffalo. I've sold clothes twice to Buffalo, and both times walked away from the experience feeling A) like they were totally judging me based on the clothes I brought in... and B) completely ripped off by their low-ball estimates. I understand that the store has to turn a profit in order to stay in business, but sometimes it just seems a little ridiculous. How is it possible that they maintain such "high standards" for the clothes they buy, when their retail selection isn't actually that great? Truth is, I came here before I hit Crossroads, only because I was hoping to add a bit more to the $2 credit that I've been hanging on to since April. (They don't let you use your store credit for sales tax btw... is that a common practice among thrifted/recycled clothing stores?) I only made $6 at Buffalo, but then sold several more items at Crossroads for a pretty generous store credit. Best of all though, I never felt like the Crossroads girl was secretly laughing at my last-season clothes. I'll go there first next time. read more

A few times a year, I feel that urge to do some Spring cleaning (or Summer/Fall/Winter!) and go through my closet to get rid of the old and hopefully make room for the new! Since moving to the Bay Area I was glad to find that there are Buffalo Exchange shops here! On my first trip to this location, I was armed with a couple of big bags full of clothes hoping to make some money and also make someone else's day in the future...one man's trash is another man's treasure, or so the saying goes. In this case, it's more like one girl's hand-me-downs are another girl's scores! One of the employees, Jaclyn, made selling clothes a pleasant experience! Other buy/sell/trade shops I've been to in the past never really cared to give decent customer service, let alone crack a smile when sifting through your old clothes! Jaclyn was friendly, helpful, didn't make me wait forever, and bought several pieces from my pile of I-haven't-worn-this-in-a-year-or-more! What ever they didn't buy, I took to donate. Definitely recommend coming here if you've got some decent old clothes you want to get rid of, but know others would totally want to rock them! Just make sure you're keeping with the season, because they won't buy shorts in the winter or coats in the summer. read more

This place is HUGE, and it reflects the huge variety of clothing styles you'll find. I came in to Buffalo Exchange before heading over to Crossroads, and I entered with a few objectives: to buy blazers, jeans, and boots. I was only able to accomplish the first two items, but I did so fashionably and affordable-y! They have so many racks of clothing, and I was sad I didn't have enough time to look through it all. I spent most of my time on the right looking at jackets and blazers. Unfortunately, they don't have many viewing mirrors, so I had to keep commuting from the right to the left side of the store as I tried on items and went back to searching. I was lucky to find 3 blazers, 2 from Express, for a grand total of $53! I also tried on a good number of tops, although I didn't find any I liked. They have a huge selection of tops and sweaters, with many chiffon blouses. I'll have to come back to thoroughly look through their sweater and tops sections! The only downside of Buffalo Exchange is the lack of nice jeans. I've found that Crossroads has the best selection of jeans at a slightly more affordable price, so divide your time wisely. On the plus side, Buffalo Exchange organizes their clothes by size rather than by color (at Crossroads), so you save A LOT of time that way. I also think Buffalo Exchange is a bit more expensive than Crossroads, but that may just be for the types of items I tend to buy. Or because Crossroads is more "half-off" stamp happy. Returns accepted within 5 days accompanied by receipt and tags attached, for store credit only. All sale items are final sale. Remember to bring a bag to carry your shopping purchases! I think a lot of reviewers have the wrong perception that this place is an ATM where you can take in your stained/unwanted clothes & get cash, so let me just clarify that that's incorrect. They have to be choosy, and I absolutely respect that, because Buffalo Exchange is a business first & foremost in a really expensive wedge of SF. That said, I found the buyers absolutely friendly, efficient, and personable throughout the short process of selling clothes. Their number system makes it so that you can shop while you wait to resell old clothes, and every time I go in, I find a piece of vintage gold at a way more affordable price than neighborhood Haight boutiques! Some gems include: a gorgeous fringed leather jacket ($58), a shearling denim vest ($7.50 at a 50% discount), and a rad hand-embroidered denim shirt ($20). Ladies: don't neglect the men's sections, because that's where I find some of the best vintage pieces. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I contemplated about selling clothes I seldom wear. I went in on a weekday, there were about 3 people before me. This woman and her daughter brought in 3 huge boxes of clothing (you could fit a 42" TV inside one) and there was only one buyer -- who was EXTREMELY languid. I waited an hour and she was not even done with the first person trying to sell. As I was waiting, I noticed many people waiting in front of the register and the employees were just walking about not even acknowledging someone was waiting to pay. Well, the power went out. Three employees huddled by the cash registers discussing on what to do, two customers stood there in front, and the employees just continued .. blah blah blah ... not even telling the customers they were not able to ring them up. - Clothing selection in this specific store is the epitome of mediocrity and overpriced. - Their employees are lethargic, many walk around with a stupid perplexed face not knowing what to do. - NEVER sell your clothes here. read more

Buffalo Exchange has a distinct lack of cute red dresses and/or cardigan sweaters. Actually, they have a distinct lack of pretty much -anything- cute which would fit my apple bottom. Plus, they are oddly laid out, causing it always to seem claustrophobic and way crowded. Then there is the issue of the red and black boa that I bought at Buffalo Exchange yesterday to wear as an accessory to my "gothic hooker" outfit. The boa was hella cute, but ceased being so when I realized how itchy it was AND that the feathers were, indeed, staining my hands black. *looks down at hands* They are STILL tinged slightly gray as I type this, and god knows how many times I've washed my hands between when I made the discovery and now. At least ten. Probably more. I have it on good authority that it stained someone else's hands, as well. Boo, Buffalo Exchange for selling hand staining accessories. The wait was long but unfortunately over the hour as I was sitting there I saw the women pass over clothes and not look at them at all. I would be okay with the fact I had 2 bags of clothes and a bag of shoes and only received 11.00 if my clothes were not obviously nicer newer and more expensive than the crap that they had hanging on the racks. I do not suggest selling back here, they are lazy and do not have a good eye or rather an inconsistent eye for solid vintage clothes. Wow. Amazing. After other high-pressure shopping experience of that day - and a few beers - Buffalo Exchange was so much fun and low-key. I didn't feel crowded or rushed and there was no wait for the dressing rooms, even though there was a good amount of people shopping around. I pulled so many things that I loved, but controlled myself to limit myself to just one special purchase: a genuine leather black motorcycle jacket in near-perfect condition, broken into the perfect softness, for $35. And I look smokin' hot. My friend on the other hand, ended up getting about 6 different things - several dresses, some gorgeous jackets including this 60's-style swing coat from Zara, and some accessories - for less than the cost of the one dress she bought at Ambiance down the street.
