This was my first visit, and I was told it was recently renovated. The food, cleanliness, and ambiance undoubtedly make it the best Chinese buffet in this area. The fried rice was cooked perfectly and the soup & sour soup had a good balance of sourness. Also featuring some surprising exotic options like fried frog legs and tiny octopus, both of which were delicious. Although I don't usually eat Chinese spare ribs, I had to try them, and they were surprisingly tender with subtle flavor. Additionally, the fried oysters were lightly battered and delightful with sprits of lemon juice. I didn't get to try everything, but everything looked good. The unpretentious pudding dessert was enjoyable. Finally, the service was friend and attentive. I never knew this place existed in Newport News, and it surpasses any other Chinese buffet in town. The best buffet I have found on the peninsula. Plenty of seating. Tables are clean and the staff is prompt to removing dishes. They have a sushi bar and Mongolian BBQ section. Several hot tables full of various Asian and American cuisines. The salad bar was fresh and a large variety of options and dressing. Went at 4 pm on a Wednesday. Food was cold, felt plastic-y and was honestly just gross. It was a cute place, got seated fast too! The "manager" was nice, we complained about the food and they let us leave free of charge, most of the employees did not speak english very well or at all. Feel like I was robbed. Second (and last time) here. First time I got to go lunch and had just shy of 2lb of food and paid under $10. (Regular lunch to go rate is $4.99 per lb). Today I went there and got less weight, around 1 3/4 ln but paid almost $13. I was super confused how I spent more when I got less but then realized they charged me much higher per lb rate. I remember the guy keep peering inside my box which I didn't think about at the time but then I saw they show charges of $7.99 per lb ($3 more per lb) on seafood. I had grabbed 2 little shrimp not thinking twice about it but now I realize thia dude used these 2 little shrimp as an excuse to charge me $3 more per pound!?! He didn't even say anything to me about it, just super shady. These 2 little shrimp cost me about $5 extra dollars. Why would I pay $8 per pound seafood rate one a plate of food that was 99% non seafood and actual weight of the seafood was probably around 1/100 of a lb. G R O S S. We had been coming here over the years and today was the LAST day. Around 4pm 6/15 we came out to eat and the restaurant had flies EVERYWHERE. Ok no big deal right? This buffet has an amazing environment and the staff works really quick to replenish your drinks and the food. The quality of the seafood here is delicious as well. The sushi is subpar to the crab legs, but I'd still eat it. The hibachi has a variety of flavors to choose from, which differs from other hibachi style buffet. Also, I came on Mother's Day, and they served lobsters for only $2 more added on to the tab. The lobsters and crab legs all-you-can eat for $14.99 was not a bad deal. However, the variety of food was lacking compared to surroundings buffet. This buffet had good quality seafood but lacked other amounts of food that non-seafood lovers may want to enjoy. Overall, this place is great if you want to grab some quick bites on seafood and hibachi, but if you're not a big fan of seafood, you should find another buffet that meets your end. read more

My sister and I came here for lunch after I got into town. The buffet was great! I really liked the lovers chicken and black pepper chicken. I was skeptical about the black pepper chicken at first because of the name but it's pretty mild and has great flavor. I got lucky enough to be at the buffet when the fresh sugar doughnuts came out. Dipped in the strawberry syrup from the bananas = A+. It was pretty cheap too...only a little over $7 and if you're military you get a discount. This was by far my worst experience at this buffet. The fried chicken and the hibachi chicken were both burnt. The mussels were dry and hard. There were various types of sushi that were bitter and old tasting. The general tsos chicken was chewy and the sauce was very thick and oily. Most of the food was either cold, had a strange taste (like the egg rolls and habachi shrimp and sushi) or was greasy and flavorless. I strongly question the quality and freshness of the food here. The fried rice was excellent, but almost everything on the menu was terrible. Even the habachi which was cooked to order tasted wrong. Some of the ingredients were particularly off-tasting, while others were fine. I'm not sure why they don't keep most of their food at a safe temperature. Some of the dishes might've been better if they were hotter. There were plenty of patrons, so the dishes couldn't have been sitting for that long. The wait staff was pleasant and prompt. Buffet City is OPEN!!!!! I had lunch there on Wednesday July 1, 2020. The buffet is the same with just a few items missing and a few items moved. The food is still very good for the prices charged ($7.99 lunch, $10.99 dinner, $12.99 Saturday dinner and all day Sunday). Everybody wears masks while up and about, they supply thin plastic gloves for all to wear while getting food from the buffet. Take off mask and gloves while seated and enjoy the food. We went there the other day- having tried it just before COVID and not being impressed- we thought for sure they would have gotten it together for reopening. Nope. The raw meat at the Mongolian looked off but my daring husband tried it anyway- it wasn't great. the food on the buffet was warm at best and multiple items weren't there that normally are. I heard that this place was very good, so my wife and l made a visit for lunch the other day, they gave us plastic gloves because of the pandemic, servers wore masks, so far so good.
