I travel from Nofolk several times a year to Buffet Star as it is consistently the best Chinese Buffet in the entire region. The New Years day buffet is an annual tradition. Not being a seafood eater, the vast array of additional offersings is always a welcome option. Sorry to say, my visit yesterdy, January 1, 2026 was not up to standard. Food was VERY bland and lacked any form of seasonings. Black Pepper Chicken had no pepper, Ham floating in a pool of water was waterlogged, Green Beans and Cabbage horrible, Ribs covered in a stange tasting sauc, etc. The worst part of my visit was my server. She was very inattentive and seemed to be more interested in flipping her ponytail and gossiping with her fellow employees than assisting at her tables. I watched her treat all of her tables in the same way. I had contemplated not leaving her any gratuity but talked myself out of it and left her a generous one anyway in spite of her lack of courtesy. No greeting when I was seated, no thank you for the tip, no Happy New Year and no please come again. Still the best Chinese buffet I've ever had in Hampton Roads! I went a week or so ago and the quality is still excellent. The owner is extremely friendly. They give you a glove for the buffet and masks are required. They are keeping a close eye on people using their mask and also... they actually replenish low food! We visit Buffet Star from time to time and it's always hit and miss. They have a great selection but you never know if it's going to be hot or not. My wife went there a few weeks ago and said everything was wonderful- so hot she could hardly eat it. However this past weekend we went and literally nothing on the buffet was hot. Hibachi - Hibachi - Hibachi! I am so here for this section! I was in the area and wanted something yummy to eat. I love Hibachi and as a result, I did a quick Yelp search to see if any places were nearby. Yup!! So here I am. The GPS gave perfect directions and I was only five minutes away from this spot. The cook thanked me for coming and I proceed to the cashier to pay and be on my merry way. I wanted to eat in the car, but I exercised patience and waited until I arrived home. Well I arrived to my final destination about an hour later. So I needed to heat up my food for a few seconds... The meal was perfect! Delicious!! I am not a fan of any buffet, so I cannot comment on this area of the restaurant. But the Hibachi station... 5 stars wholeheartedly! I cannot wait to be in the area again just to stop by here and get some more of this goodness. This restaurant is located in a great area of the city, meaning there is some of everything all within walking distance. The Town Center area is about 10 minutes away if walking. However, I visited last Sunday and my granddaughters bill was $9.99 because she is only 10 years, but today they wanted to charge her the adult meal because she is over 5 feet tall. Although, she is tall for her age, I think is discriminatory in nature especially since many Americans may be taller in nature as where Asians may not. She is in 5th grade, born in August 2014 and some times we may have to verify her age. In addition, although she may be tall she does NOT eat like an adult. This business makes a significant amount of money from all patrons who visits it, especially AMERICANS, and to add this discriminatory note on their menu is NOT degrading but reflects discrimination. The manager indicated we were given exception last week because we were visitors, which is definitely NOT true. I have frequent them well overs 6 plus years, and my granddaughters have been with me, including the 10 year old. We will won't be going back to assist in their WEALTH at all. My granddaughter was saddened and offended as well as she often gets teased or is questioned about her true age. Money is NOT a factor!! It's not good practice, discriminatory and offensive in nature... But, they are building their wealth off of US!!!! The buffet isn't the largest I have seen but the standard options are there (egg rolls, rice, sushi, soup, etc.) They also offer whole boiled crab & soft shell crab which gets gone pretty quick. The Hibachi Station it's okay, the line is normally pretty long & the chef prepares one meal at a time. It's always a crowd when I go, so you know the food isn't too bad when it's packed. It's located in a strip mall beside an auto parts store. From the outside it's pretty sketchy but inside isn't what the outside portrays. Overall, price is great, food is okay, wouldn't jump to go here again, but if in the Hampton area and looking for some Chinese food, definitely check it out. read more
