i've been getting tattoed by Kori for 4 years now and he is literally the best tattoo artist and person. i have a an appt with him usually every 6 weeks or 2-3 months at the latest because his art, aura, personality, kindness, and pricing is the absolute best. our art style matches up perfectly and whenever i come to him with an idea he draws up exactly what im thinking of - or even better. when he first told me he was moving to LA i was 100% prepared to travel to LA every time i wanted a tattoo because im not going to anyone else. i've received tattoos from other artists while im traveling and i always have to go to Kori to fix it for me. his fine lines are so precise, so clean, and so well done that even my tattoos that he did years ago people assume are new because they're still so bold and haven't faded at all. i receive compliments almost daily on all his work and have sent so many people his way to get tattooed. i would 1000% percent recommend getting tattooed by Kori - and also, the vibe of the shop is so welcoming and wonderful. which i've also dealt with other shops not being women friendly, this one will welcome you with open arms. also incredibly queer friendly, which is amazing and not seen everywhere in the tattoo scene. read more

I visited this shop in October 2021 to have a tattoo of my dog done by Jordan Lentz. While the session itself was okay if I disregard Jordan's persistent ego, my experience with her since has led me to write this review. I waited for her to acknowledge what I've described below, but that hasn't happened. In addition to inverting my dog's face, Jordan is pretending she didn't do this piece in the first place and now refuses to finish it. I am now in the position of trying to find someone who can match the style of what's already been done. So here it is: Jordan is certainly talented, which is why I reached out to her from way out of town...but she makes sure you know she's doing you a favor by accepting you as a client. While that kind of attitude might be common in this industry, it's so incredibly distasteful to me. I wanted a good tattoo because this is a very sentimental piece, so I put my feelings about Jordan's prickliness aside a focused on her beautiful dog portraits. Unfortunately, she inverted my dog's face and it wasn't until I got home and undid the bandages the next day that I realized it. Somehow this didn't match the drawing I recall being shown before it ended up on my arm. And I later found that she posted a flipped photo of my dog to her Instagram to make it seem like it matched the original image I provided; this conveyed that she not only knew she made a mistake, but attempted to cover it up to show her work publicly. At any rate, I got a portrait that at least sort of resembles my dog so I've tried to get past it. It's a beautiful piece... it's just not my dog. The session for the portrait was about 5ish hours and we had to modify the original idea to include floral elements because of time and sizing. I settled for what ended up looking like a mismatched afterthought, but the most important thing was the portrait, so again, I just dealt with it. I told Jordan I'd come back sometime to have the florals I actually wanted added on and she seemed amenable to this, even asking that I bring my dog by next time I'm in town. I guess she was just exchanging disingenuous pleasantries because she now refuses to finish this tattoo she started. For the rest of the tattoo to match, it seemed logical to go back to the original artist for the florals to be added. I waited for her books to reopen in December and explained in her form (which she activated for only an hour) that I'd be flying in whenever she's available to have the agreed upon florals done to finish this piece. Since I'm not local, it takes quite a bit of planning on my end to make this happen. I got back this cold, canned response as if she'd never met me or tattooed me. It said, "I've reviewed your idea, and I don't know that I would be the best artist to execute your concept for this piece... I encourage you to keep me in mind for any future projects which are more within the style and tone of my portfolio." How can your OWN tattoo not be within the style and tone of your portfolio? How unprofessional that you choose to act like this instead of owning up. Maybe you are embarrassed by your mistake or you just don't want to work with me. Either way, be up front about it and own it. This incredibly important piece of my dog has been so tarnished by working with Jordan. I even let her talk me into having my dog face outward instead of towards me like I wanted. I felt pressured by the, "Trust me, you'll regret it" spiel from a "professional." What I regret is listening to her - but that's on me as I should have insisted on what would make me happy, not what she thought would look better for her Instagram. For the sake of basic decency, I hope that it was Jordan's assistant who messed up in this latest exchange but I don't know how you can possibly mistake what I wrote as being from a stranger. The appropriate thing to do would have been an acknowledgement of some sort once the mistake became apparent. So if you do go to Jordan, be extra vigilant about what ends up on your body and be prepared for her to make you feel like a terrible burden. Jordan, please learn some customer service skills. (It's interesting she's asked other people to say nice things about her after I posted this review. Not one review about Jordan at this shop until mine, and suddenly she's beloved at a San Diego shop by people who were tattooed in Chicago) read more

This review is for Jordan Lentz who is the only tattoo artist I've seen at BUJU. This is my 16th tattoo, I've been tattooed all over the world by big name artists to stick and pokes in living rooms. Jordan's booking process is standard for any popular artist. Books open once every few months. She chooses projects that fit her style and interests which I appreciate because the only bad tattoo I have was done by a talented artist who did not tattoo in the style I wanted but I insisted on them doing the tattoo. I submitted a request for a Pacific rhododendron. She and her assistant were prompt and polite. When I arrived at Buju, they had good COVID protocol. Everyone was masked and vaccination records were checked. As for the tattooing, Jordan presented me with two initial drawings to work from. She was amenable to my suggestions for minor changes. The whole tattoo process was enjoyable. She was very intuitive with me and knew when to ask if I needed a break or to switch positions. The work she did was stunning and captured exactly what I was looking for. Her floral work is specific, I've never seen anyone with the type of dot work she does. The tattoo healed well and is aging well. I had to reschedule my second appointment with Jordan due to me getting COVID. She was super helpful with the rescheduling, I can't wait to see her again. read more

This review is long overdue since I'm not one to post bad reviews ever. But now is the time cuz I need to give a shout out to BRIANA for her unprofessionalism. In 2016, I was going through a rough 2 years grieving over my mom's death. I thought getting my first-ever tattoo tributed to her would be the best way to keep her close to my heart. So I thought carefully about what I wanted and did tremendous amounts of research on Google, Yelp, & IG. I came across Buju tattoo and thought "this is the one." I visited the shop so I could meet the ever-so-popular watercolor artist before making my final decision. When I shared with Briana my idea, she thought it was a really "cute" idea, and she appeared just as ecstatic as I was. When I looked at her portfolio, which I already saw from Yelp, I thought this is the style I love. We agreed to book an appt and I even emailed Briana the detailed description of what I wanted, location, and size as a friendly reminder before the appt date. Fast forward several months later (she had to reschedule at one point because she had "food poisoning"), I was so excited to come into my appt only to be SO DISAPPOINTED. The sketch was nothing close to the idea I shared. And when I asked where certain major details were hoping she would be flexible enough to add/tweak it some more, Briana's response was something along the lines of "your idea doesn't make sense," "the size and shape won't fit there" and "did you do your research? Looked at my IG?" in a condescending tone of voice. I was honestly too shocked to say much of anything else and all I could do was ask for a refund even tho I knew it was non-refundable. But to be brutally honest, her lousy work and demeanor was worth giving me that deposit back. The moment she said, "I never had a customer who did this before," I realized it was useless to even try to communicate any further. I calmly walked out with $200 less and a really heavy heart. BUT GUESS WHAT. I'm SO GLAD I walked out because 4 years later, I met a talented artist in South Korea and she went BEYOND my expectations. I didnt even send this artist a descriptive email. Just the necessary stuff like size, location, etc. and verbally gave a brief description of what I wanted, which was a baby angel pig sleeping on a lotus (my mom's zodiac animal is the pig ) and BOOM. ART. MAGIC. I attached a pic of it hehe. So much for Briana's excuses huh? On another note, I want to give it a stem connected to my heart and some blue watercolor splash, if anyone has a place in San Diego lmk. JUST NOT BUJU, please. I know there are raving reviews about this place, and that's part of the reason why I chose it in the first place. It's just unfortunate I didn't get to experience that. But hey, everything happens for a reason and it worked out. I just needed to post this because 1. JUSTICE & 2. Potential customers, BEWARE. If it could happen to me, it can to you too JS. I am blown away by how wonderful my experience with artist, Jill Hollingsworth was. She was simply a lovely person to talk to during my tattoo sitting. I love the work she put into the tattoo of my dog, Skippy. She worked so quickly and intently, she's amazing to watch. Moreover, she has a light hand, I actually dozed off a few times during my session . Her station was very clean and organized which I appreciate immensely. I got my first tattoo 11/12, the process wasn't very pleasant. I arrived early, and Kori said he had time to take me bit before my 3pm-4pm time slot. In our correspondence in the lead up, I had told him I was extremely nervous for my first tattoo. we had discussed either a simple heart or an anatomical heart, and when I arrived I decided on the former. When I asked about some minor tweaks to the simple heart design that he drew on the spot, it felt like he was frustrated, kept rushing me and that he said he didn't have time for me to "keep changing my mind", despite having a lot of time left in the appointment (we finished by 3:05 and I arrived at 2:25). Ultimately, it left me feeling rushed and pressured, resulting in an extremely unpleasant experience. Since it was my first time and I was clearly very nervous, I had hoped he would have been more patient or understanding, but that was not the case. read more

My daughter turned 18 this past weekend. She has wanted a tattoo for her 18th birthday for the last year. She wanted a mother/daughter tattoo and found Curtis's work online and loved it. Curtis had drawn out what we wanted and consulted with us first on color, etc. He was very patient with my daughter and made sure she felt comfortable and communicated with her the whole time. He was great for a first time tattooee. He put her mind at ease and did an absolute beautiful job on her tattoo. It wasn't my first tattoo so I already knew what to expect. Here's why I went back two more times: After I submitted my ideas when she opened her books and she accepted, her communication with me was thorough. She presented me with several designs that were all beautiful. We discussed placement and she mentioned that the animal should face towards me, not away - as she's the pro, I listened to her. The design, a horse, is pretty big (thigh size) so it took two sessions. She was super professional during both sessions. The finished product is beautiful - and I'm so glad she picked my idea. The process was so positive that I went back for a second custom, a tattoo of my late dog (the best roommate ever.) The tattoo looks exactly like my buddy did in real life, and i'm so grateful for her because now I have him with me forever. i've had some pretty horrific experiences, including being double booked by an artist, and an artist "forgetting" to design my tattoo before I got there. The majority of the artists are women. And they are TALENTED! The shop is LGBTQ+ welcoming and they have done fundraisers for trans kids. So they literally put their money where their mouth is.
