Look, I`m in my 40s now and have some wisdom, but in my 20s, I was getting tattooed without really thinking about the artists skill or if I really, truly wanted the tattoo. Now that I`m older, I`m in phase two of my tattoo journey, which includes both covering up some pieces and now, removing some pieces either as a full removal(or as close to it) or lightening. Thus my journey with Evolve has begun. I had my consultation and first session with Mary today. I had no idea I was going to go through with a session on the spot, but after talking with Mary and feeling really comfortable and pleased with the information I received, the professionalism, and Mary's good nature and attitude, I went ahead and dove in head first. I went to talk about 3 different areas I wanted to work on and ended up staying to work on the bigger piece on my back. Go big or go home. Really, though, I should have started with a smaller piece because I`m not going to lie, laser tattoo removal is painful. Yes, your mileage may vary and it will depend on the size and area of the tattoo, but truthfully, it is no walk in the park. Mary was incredibly kind and sensitive to the pain involved with this process. They have numbing cream if you need it and with the laser, you get a nice arctic blast of air over the area. I have a lot of tattoos all over, and this was spicier than I thought. The care that Evolve places on their process and the passion they perform their work with is unmatched and you will be in the best hands during your sessions. Need to take a lot of breaks? Totally fine. Communicate and you will be met with kindness and understanding because this is not a comfortable process. I will provide an update as I go along my journey. I want to schedule my next session, for my smaller pieces, and get those going as well. Appointments are easy to schedule, you get text and email reminders, and the part that everyone wants to know about: Pricing. VERY reasonable. I did one consultation at another place a couple of years ago and said forget it because of the insane(in my opinion) cost per session for a very small piece. You won't know how many sessions you will need, of course, but they sometimes have specials or package deal that will take a bit extra off of already doable pricing. The only minor note I have is that parking can be tricky. This is not Evolve's fault. It is the nature of the area. So, may the force be with you. Get there early and you might have to do a little walking.

Before making the purchase, I specifically asked what would happen if I couldn't tolerate the pain, since I had never experienced the treatment before. I was assured that if I completed less than 10% of the treatment, I would be eligible for a full refund. I ended up doing barely one pass and simply could not tolerate the pain. When I requested a refund, I was told they would not issue one because I had apparently been given "misinformation" by their own staff. So now I'm stuck with nearly $3,000 in credit for services I don't want or need. That is completely unacceptable. I ended up using some of the credit on Clear + Brilliant, which was essentially pointless for me, and Botox with injectors that were inexperienced and horrible. The biggest issue here is that I made a major purchase based on information their employee gave me, and when that information turned out to be wrong, LaserAway refused to take responsibility for it.

As a newcomer to San Diego I had three priorities upon arrival: 1. Search for dog-friendly places to take German Shepherds 2. Locate an amazing Korean restaurant that comes as close to my mother-in-law's cooking as possible 3. Find an amazing tattoo shop I'm still working on numbers 1 and 2 (Dog A is a butt head, Dog B is a sissy, and Mother is the best cook ever but then again I'm biased...) however number 3 could be checked off my list when I found Guru Tattoo in PB. When it comes to most things I am a very laid back, chill, go with the flow type chick, but when it comes to tattoos I'm not gonna lie--I'm a diva. I am a firm believer that one should not make a habit of compromising in life, whether you are talking about your choice of a life partner or the quality of the ink on your skin. Let's face it, sometimes it doesn't work out with a special someone and you get a "do-over" with the next relationship but that's definitely not so with tattoos. Tattoos are one of the few things that can be called a true lifetime commitment in this day and age. My husband compared me to Goldilocks during my search for the ideal shop--something just didn't feel "right" about the places I looked at. Just when I began to think about postponing my search, enter Guru. I initially found them via their website and I was positively blown away by the portfolios of the artists. It's very rare to find so much talent under one roof. I had an idea of what I wanted and Rory Keating's style fit my vision. He describes his style as "culturally-based tattooing" and that description fits perfectly. Rory can go from modern tribal, to Maori, to Celtic, to Nordic, to...well, you get the point. He is also extremely respectful of the cultures he draws his inspiration from. You definitely don't find that every day. I phoned him at the number listed on his portion of the site and soon thereafter I was sitting down for the first stage of the consultation. Upon arrival at the shop I was greeted promptly in a very friendly manner. I informed the gentleman (that's exactly what he was) that I was there for a consultation with Rory Keating. During my short wait I had the opportunity to take in all of the eye candy. The décor is fantastic and very original. In the blink of an eye, Rory was there to take me back and get started. We sat down and began bouncing around the ideas I had for my tattoo. He had numerous art books to look through and really took his time discussing what would and wouldn't work. If something wouldn't work, whether it was due to aesthetics or anatomy, he was sure to tell you. He won't put something on you that you that will look like crap or doesn't flow with the body. He has a great eye for placement. I left on Cloud 9 after the first visit, giddy just anticipating what he would come up with. When the day came for me to see the design he had worked up I was literally speechless, and that doesn't happen often...which I'm sure you can tell by my long-winded review. :) This man is truly an artist. The half sleeve I have looks like it is a part of me and blends the elements of my heritage perfectly. It has a life all it's own. I have already been in discussion with Rory for my next tattoo and I know without a doubt I will get another masterpiece. In my opinion you honestly can't go wrong with Guru Tattoo. It has everything you could want in a tattoo shop--extremely clean, quality work, very professional--and then some! That is the definition according to Meriam-Webster. With that in mind, its safe to say this shop is aptly named. I've been getting ink for about 10 years, on both coasts, and although there are many talented tattoo artists in this country, but you'll be hard pressed to find so many under one roof. But amazing talent alone doesn't make any artist or shop perfect. A tattoo is beyond art, a memory that never fades, and a truly great artist is someone you respect and admire. The guys at Guru fit the bill. These are some rad, down to earth guys, who approach each job with its due respect. They understand that although its just another day of work for them, for the customer, each tattoo is a really big deal. Aaron Della Vedova is my artist and one hell of a cool dude, but I respect the hell out of each one of these guys for the combination of their talent and their personalities. In San Deigo for a week. Really wanted Southern Cal experience and talent to do substantial piece. Did research thru friendlu local people I met that had good ink. Guru was mentioned many times. Took trip to PB. Got hair cut at Lefty's ++ (Mike is great - nice bike!) Headed to Guru :) No artists avail :( Nathan recommended Matt but he was off for two days, was given email add to set up appointment. Dude replied on his day off (goog sign). Matt is the real deal. Genuine guy, easy going, serious talent. Did great work while we discussed life, SoCal, art, music, politics, careers, kids, influences, growing older, marriage, etc. Traditional old style swallows on my shoulders are outstanding. Great line work, excellent shade and colour. Whole crew was friendly (Kevin did powerful tribute script on my friend's arms. So nice!) No neg attitude or "too cool for you" vibe. Plain and simple guru tattoo is the s*^t!!!! My man Ron what can i say the best front end man in the business! He will set you up with the rt artist and make you pee your pants laughing while doing it. He's got skills mad skills. As far as tattoo work goes I got a full sleeve from the man the myth the legend Aarron Della Vedova! I waited forever ;) but it was well worth the wait. He busted out the sickest original design I could ever have imagined and we finished in about 3 to 4 months. About 40 hours total. Aaron also did a full side piece on my wife. Very sick as well. To sum it up pretty much the best tattoo experience I have ever had. Very professional, clean, always on time and when it was time to work aaron did work. Hands down he is the best artist in the US maybe even the world. Book him now before his wait list gets longer. Any way I hope this helps on your decision on where to get a piece. This was my first time at Guru, and also my first yelp review. I had a tattoo in mind that I wanted to get done quickly, and through word of mouth Guru Tattoo came highly recommended. I walked in to check out the place and ended up meeting Jason and telling him what I had in mind. I wanted California poppies to celebrate my 1 year anniversary of moving here. We set an appointment for the next day, and when I got there and he showed me the drawing he came up with, I knew it was going to be perfect. His communication was great throughout the whole process. Jason made me feel at ease, and was super professional. I wanted very thin lines and muted colors and he killed it! It's better than I envisioned, and I truly couldn't be happier. I see Kyle Walker at Guru and he is awesome. I drive from Arizona for his work! With my last appointment I was over an hour late and he was still super cool about it (but that doesn't mean you should be late to his appts haha). He listens to your ideas and has a killer eye for how to work out your tattoo so that it looks the best it can. He is a phenomenal artist. The shop has a friendly environment, no egotistical bullshit. Which is great considering the amount of talent that is in that shop. I have been to shops that were so full of their own ego they couldn't get up off their asses to say hello and ask how they could help you, which is never the kind of place you want to get your tattoos from. I got my first tattoo here in 2009 by Nate, if I remember correctly. From walking up to the front desk through the completion of my tattoo, I had a great experience here. I love that there is artwork on the walls as soon as you walk in and the vibe of the shop is really great. From what I could tell, everyone seemed really friendly and it definitely eased my first-timer nerves. The price you pay here is absolutely worth the quality of their artists and almost 5 years later my tattoo looks just as great as it did in the pictures I took after it healed. I don't know if I have ever been more satisfied with dropping $300 on something nor do I know if I ever will be again. I just started my sleeve with El Ugo. He did my first tattoo and I knew I wanted him to create my sleeve. El Ugo is a damn magician with the creative design. His blackwork is the BEST! He took my ideas and made a bad ass sleeve design. He took the time to listen, create, and modify. Our first appointment he did all of the outline. Very professional staff all around. Just finished my first session for a 10"x 6" side piece (pics to come!) with ERIK KUSHNER. This guy is a pro, no doubt. Drew up a design for me that was a-may-zing. I don't know how he did it, because I gave him the most convoluted description possible. Only had enough $$ for two hours of work, but he banged it out in an hour and a half ! ! ! And there is a lot of detail goin on in this piece. Quick, light, and steady hand. Couldn't hope for better. Ask for ERIK if you need a new tattoo!!! read more

I came to Guru for my first tattoo. I was in town for work so was a bit nervous. I was immediately put to ease by Stephanie, the front desk person, and Tom, the artist. The shop was extremely clean, everyone appropriately licesed. Tom did a phenomenal job talking to me about the process, the tools, etc. He had an extremely steady hand and my tattoo came out wonderfully! The lines are very clean! I would recommend Guru, and Tom, to anyone searching for an artist. read more

my boyfriend did a lot of research before choosing Guru to do his tattoo. We live in Los Angeles and heard good things about the shop all the way up here. He couldn't be happier with his work. He's getting a full sleeve by Aaron Della Vedova, and although he has 2 more sittings to finish it up, it already looks amazing. We'll post some pictures when it's finished. absolutey the best tattooing SD has to offer. The ENTIRE staff here is top-notch quality. the shop itself is immaculate and beautfully decorated. amazing amaing amazing! thats all that needs to be said! the quality is consistant between each artist, the portfolios speak for themselves. i love the comfort of the shop too, theres no "sketchy" creeps givin dirty looks, no one is intimidating, and everyone gives their utmost respect to each customer. read more

This place is incredible. One comes to expect a certain "atmosphere" of unprofessionalism and a lack of cleanliness at tattoo shops. Finally, there is a shop that doesn't fall into this category. Everyone there has the highest degree of professionalism and the shop is amazing inside. It really makes you feel comfortable. They're welcoming at all…read more There's an ongoing joke that tattoo spots these days make it feel like they're inconvenienced by walk-in and I never experienced it until I visited this spot, except I was attending a Friday the 13 flash event. The tattoos were not great quality either. My artist which I believe is the owner or one of the main guys gave me attitude when I asked if he could make my tattoo half and inch small. Then I asked if he could rotate it as in physically turn it before placing it and he got annoyed again, said I'd have to pay extra if I'm going to be asking for all that. I explained it wanted it at 90 degree angle vs how how was going to place it. He wouldn't need to make any further changes. Obviously it was a misunderstanding but the way he spoke to me was not friendly at all. But the real issue was how bad the tattle was, didn't look like what was on the flash sheet at all. On the sheet it looked like fine line and well. Just look at my picture to see the issue. You can hardly read the inner part which was supposed to say Veneno. Overall it just came out sloppy and I'm genuinely embarrassed by it. I lie to folks and say that it's supposed to look like that to give spooky vibes but in reality that's not how the tattoo was portrayed on the flash sheet, I think they tatted a little too deep too.
