Hunter Knolmayer worked on my arm doing an addition to an old Navy tattoo. I have a big affinity for several asian cultures and spent three years in Japan while I was in the Navy. I wanted a half sleeve with a half "rising sun", including seven red stripes and six white (over my old ship illuminated numbers and) blue water with white shimmering sparkles. To give it an American flag/japanese prideful combination. Hunter ignored what I asked him specifically (I knew him for over a decade, I used to work with him. So I contacted him out of his work/work hours). We had spent three five hour sessions with one session left. Multiple weeks in between each session. We had briefly discussed wrapping the tattoo around my arm and I had told him we would start after we finished the tattoo we were working on. After waiting three more weeks to finish my tattoo I went in and he was excited to start the new tattoo. He had come up with a design I did not like, showed me as I walked in the door to finish my tattoo he was already working on, then kicked me out of his shop when I wanted him to finish what he had started. I looked at it in the mirror as he was going to tattoo me and something was wrong, though I did not know what. Until I went home and looked it up on the Internet. The red sun he put on my arm has specifically sixteen red rays. I read this is extremely racist off putting and offensive. Hunter says he prides himself on researching his projects which leads me to believe he knew what he was putting on my arm. He did not warn me. On the positive side he is a skilled tattoo artist. Just not trustworthy. Recap: Hunter URScum did not finish my tattoo. Which was not exactly what I wanted and ended up being a racist offensive tattoo. Response: I was ignorantly happy with what he was doing. I was nothing short of supportive and grateful. I thanked him a couple days ago before I found out he replaced the image I gave him with an offensive image. I know artist can't always give us exactly what we want and when I went in on the first session I told him what he drew up was wrong. He did not want to have to redo it and was able to convince me to do his art. I put my trust in him and allowed him to apply his art. His art is offensive to many. That is a violation of trust. It was not supposed to be a new seperate tattoo. I want a continuation from the tattoo he was first working on. I wanted him to extend it. He did not want to. He came up with his own idea and did not show me until I walked in the door to finish my first tattoo by him. I probably would still be happy until I offended the wrong person. If Hunter would have finished the piece I went to him, specifically, to get, we would maybe still working together happily. Instead he made me question him. And through him, all of you. Did he know he was applying an offensive image? Do you? His actions speak louder than your words. *Watch out for these guys. They are trained well at conversation and wording. Their actions are not on the same lines with their words. read more

Wish I would have been more patient and found an artist that was honest and trustworthy. Even if what is clearly phallic imagery is the industry standard I specifically asked and he agreed this would not show up in my tattoo. He placed them in a hard to see area and on the last day of our 3 day session. Came here and saw some of the artists work online. Decided to go big and have them work on a cover up (not always so easy). 3,500$ later, I had a half sleeve cover up done by Christian. He was punctual, creative, and friendly all the way through. The shop itself is small and only has about 5-6 working artist, all with their own flare. Being in San Diego, there is a HUGE influx in artists locally. 1-10 I would give this shop a solid 7. That isn't bad. I do think they are a little more expensive than some others.
