Perhaps I'm spoiled by the Korean BBQ House back home in Markham, ON. I found the Bul Go Gi house deficient in three critical categories: Meal quality, price, and general ambiance. On the first, on a chilly mid-December day I look forward to having Bim Bap delivered steaming and crackling in heavy cast iron bowls. The wooden platters supporting these bear scorch marks and the olfactory and aural experience delivered creates fantastic anticipation. At home the server brings the bowls to the table, adds chilli past in the amount directed and mixes it in before placing it before you. Bim Bap was not on the menus and we settled for Bulgogi. The Dwaeji Bulgogi arrived on a plate and the Chicken Bulgogi was served luke warm in a stainless steel bowl. Our meals tasted fine and yet we remained keenly aware of the difference in presentation. Regarding price. A "lunch special" Chicken Bulgogi is $17.99 and the Dwaeji is $18.99?! Really? Look I know that things have gotten more expensive and that Alberta grocery prices are currently higher than Ontario. But, a Chicken Bim Bap back home is still $14.99. Considering the difference in meal quality and venue ambiance, it feels expensive. Lastly, decor and ambiance. I'm not sure what preceded the Bul Go Gi house on these premises but in consideration of the basic melamine tables, cafeteria quality chairs, and long abused paint on the walls I'd say dive bar would be a fair guess. I don't need fancy but can we not at least get things up to mall food court standards? The disposable chop sticks were not the worst I've used, i.e., they weren't quite spindly wooden dowels, but were among the cheaper ones available. At $17.99 for a lunch combo I expect a bit better. Overall, it was okay (maybe more like okay-ish) although it's unlikely we'd return. I regret having to provide a mediocre-at-best rating but that's my impression. read more

I'm not exactly sure why this is, but the Korean food in Edmonton is very good. There are a lot of solid restaurants to choose from, ranging from traditional cuisine all the way up to the more modern and innovative. There are plenty of options for Korean BBQ, Korean fried chicken, and of course Korean street food (like those crazy corn dogs!). Personally, some of the best Korean food that I've eaten in Canada has been right here in Edmonton. Open since 1973, Bul Go Gi House in the Bonnie Doon area has gotta be one of the longest-standing Korean restaurants in the city. Edmonton Journal named them Best Korean Restaurant 2020 and Best Korean Restaurant 2021. It's easy to see that this Korean favourite has reached institution status. Surprisingly, however, I had never visited myself! It was about time that I did and that I experienced Bul Go Gi House for myself. Visiting on a Saturday evening, reservations are recommended due to the restaurant's on-going popularity. You'll find Bul Go Gi House in an especially lovely and adorable neighbourhood, right in Edmonton's Quartier Francophone. It's arguably one of the best little corners of the city. The outside of the restaurant is nothing flashy and it looks like it's been around forever. Inside, the dining area is large, made up of various rooms, and potentially hasn't been updated at all since the 70s (which I love). You'll find exposed brick, wood paneling, and a general cafeteria vibe to the place. There are a few pieces of Korean art on the walls but for the most part the decor is pretty simple. Seated quickly, our server was exceptionally friendly and helpful in answering any of our questions. The menu is fairly extensive and leans in a very traditional direction. You won't find anything too wacky here, only the most classic, tested, and true plates. All of our dishes came out very quickly once ordered and the meal was accompanied by an automatic serving of steamed white rice. Curiously, we were not given chopsticks to use, only a fork and spoon. When dining Korean I am accustomed to using chopsticks and a spoon. I found myself missing the chopsticks but didn't bother mentioning it. As with most (all?) Korean restaurants, the meal begins with banchan. These small side dishes are almost always complimentary and you'll usually be served at least two of them. Sometimes there are like six of them and that's a real party! Bul Go Gi House offered up the two most popular types; Kimchi and Kongnamul (cold boiled bean sprouts with sesame oil). It's always a good idea to try the house kimchi at a Korean restaurant, so I appreciate that it's usually a lock to be served as banchan. The kimchi was filled with spicy, fermented magic. The sprouts were good too. I find that banchan is meant to be used as a palate cleanser and the pickled flavours facilitate that well. When choosing what to order, no other dish could be more obvious of a choice than the Bulgogi (Marinated beef with vegetables - $18.95). I mean, it's the restaurant's name. You'll find it in the Stir-Fries section of the menu and there are actually three different types to select from. We went with the most classic one in this case. Thin, marinated slices of beef stir-fried in a pan with various vegetables like cabbage, carrots, sprouts and onions. For a self-titled dish, I enjoyed Bul Go Gi Houses' version a lot. Expertly made, the beef was extremely flavourful. The whole plate boasted a savoury deliciousness. The veggies were fresh and bright, delightfully crisp. If I had any criticism it would be that I wish there had been a little bit more beef! An obvious must-try, you won't be disappointed with this namesake dish. Even though steamed rice was provided, a favourite Korean dish of mine is always the bibibap, a rice dish that gets combined with a bunch of different ingredients. Bul Go Gi House has four different types to choose from but my very favourite is Dolsot Bibimbap (Vegetarian, hot stone pot bibimbap - $18.50) which refers to the sizzling stone bowl that the dish is served in. The benefit to the dolsot version is that, as previously mentioned, the bowl arrives sizzling-hot. This caramelizes the rice and other ingredients, creating crispy and delicious edges. Once you dolsot it's difficult to go back! This version is served with vegetables, rice and egg. You will also always be provided with gochujang to use, a Korean hot sauce which you can add to taste. My method is to add (a lot of) gochujang to the dish and then to mix the entire bowl up, incorporating all of the ingredients. This also breaks up the egg and distributes the yolk throughout. Once this is done everything touching the bowl itself adopts the aforementioned crispiness and it is quite wonderful. This version was very good and I enjoyed their quality ingredients and the overall experience of it all. For our last dish we weren't exactly sure what to order! Tonight we ordered delivery through UberEats and he basically got within 2 blocks and phoned and said that he couldn't find the address and if I wanted my order I would have to walk over and get it. I know that this is UberEats however Bul Go Gi is using this terrible service. The food was not good, it was cold, there was no kimchi, nothing really to go along with the meal. Wow, first of all, I'm impressed that Bul Go Gi House has over 1,000 reviews on Urbanspoon. Seriously, that's absolutely massive, especially when you consider it's Edmonton. They must be doing something right, right? That or all the Caucasian people know about it (more on that later, haha). Bul Go Gi House is located right in the heart of U of A's campus Saint-Jean. It looks a bit run down on the outside but don't let that deter you. The interior is clean and the space is surprisingly much bigger than one would anticipate from the outside. The restaurant was packed for a Tuesday night and seriously, I can't say I've ever seen such a variety in clientele at a Korean restaurant before. I guess being open for 40+ years and being the first Korean, family run restaurant in town has its perks. The service is decent (typical Asian style) but they are quick and friendly. I like how they bring out a jug of water right at the beginning so that you don't have to constantly ask for more water. We decided to go with a couple dishes to share: - Banchan - we were given bean sprout salad and kim chi. Bean sprouts were delicious and they re-filled them quickly when we ran out. - Yuke gae jang ($13.00 large) - hot and spicy soup with chunks of beef and vegetables. The soup lived up to both those descriptions. Piping hot and spicy to boot. Apparently this is my friend's go to soup, Korean style. Good stuff indeed. - Dweh ji bulgogi ($12.75) - marinated spicy pork with vegetables. It comes with a side bowl of rice. Another solid dish. The pork was well seasoned. - Be beem nang myon ($12.75) - thin, chewy noodles in a sweet and spicy sauce. These are cold, chilled noodles which I've never had before. We both really enjoyed this dish as the noodles had the perfect texture. My friend was concerned with how authentic the food was going to be but once we had our first bite, she was completely satisfied. In a nutshell, the food is quite good but Bul Go Gi House clearly caters their flavour and spiciness to their main clientele. I guess you could say it's westernized Korean. This place is a delicious little hideaway. The portions have shrunk in recent years the ribs are still tasty. I was disappointed to pay $24 for three pieces oF BBQ ribs! We also had an order of kimchi fried rice and I had a tea. The service was great. A very sweet girl who was an international student. As soon as you sit down they bring you kimchi and sprouts. I noticed that portion was much smaller as well. There isn't much in the way of ambiance since the place is basically two trailers put together but it's clean and open. Just ordered from this place for take out. My impression is that it is expensive for what you get. Portion sizes are small and lack the quality vegetables I find at other similar restaurants. I spent almost $100 and the bag felt light compared to other places. The stir fry should be around $12 to 14 not $18 to $23. The fried rice was not worth $16. Bean sprouts, a spicy cabbage and white rice came in side containers that we did not order but I assume are included. Food tasted OK. They have spicy dishes as well. Interior is very very dated. So it might look a bit seedy, but the food is great. They just upped their prices a little while ago so it might seem a bit pricy. But they keep their menus for a really long time, so keep checking back and the value continues to go up. My favourite is jap chai which is soft glass mungbean noodles with veggies- 17 dollars. My friend loves the mountain veggie hot pot. Also 17 dollars-- if the decor were a bit less old and musty, we wouldn't flinch at these prices- Biera is a case in point. But the inside of this restaurant hasn't been redone since the 70's (just guessing)- I'll post some pics next time I'm there. Plenty of gluten free choices, although they don't market them as that. I've been going to the Bul Go Gi House my entire life. It's been open for over 30 years, and a staple of delicious Korean Food in Edmonton. There are a few things that always stay the same at the Bul Go Gi House. The quality of food is always the same (delicious), the prices are always reasonable, and the service is always friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are always tiny and out-of-date, which is part of the charm. The decor is beautiful and casual, and hasn't changed much in all the time I've been coming there. The menu is full of variety, from rices, to meats, to hot pots. I would absolutely recommend the Bul Go Gi, the meat is delicious and tender. It's a great menu to select new things from and try a bunch of dishes with a group of friends. This is the type of restaurant where you order a whole lot of the menu, split it amongst yourselves family style, and pay a reasonable rate for it. (And have some take out leftover!) Every meal comes with steamed rice, bean sprout salad (so good!), and kim chi. I recommend trying it all! For those who aren't used to eating with chopsticks, or who haven't mastered the rice on chopsticks combo, they also bring forks to the table. (So no worries!) This restaurant is one of my favourites in Edmonton. It's consistently good, with fantastic service, and amazing food. read more

Came here on a whim after work today with the boyfriend. I've been craving Korean food for the past few weeks so I was happy to finally get my fix. This is my go-to restaurant and first pick! Happy to report that we both left very satisfied this round too! My eyes were obviously bigger than my stomach (like usual!) so I took the liberty of ordering for the two of us: - Pork Bone Stew - This is only available Mon - Wed evenings. Served in a thick stone bowl, the stew is more like a soup as it is brothy and contains cabbage, potato, and two giant pork bones with meat. The broth was tasty, not overly spicy which I appreciated, and the pork bones were delicious since they had pieces of pork meat still attached and tender to boot! - Bul-Ga-Bee - Grilled marinated beef short ribs - one of my favourite dishes but also the priciest IMO since it's almost $23 and for that price you only receive three slabs of beef short ribs. But they are marinated and cooked to perfection - medium rare, tender, and oh so perfect! - Bul-Go-Gi - Sweetly marinated and tender beef accompanied by grilled veggies. A solid dish! And perfect for leftovers! - Jap-Chae - Deliciously chewy noodles with broccoli, carrot, onion, and shitake mushrooms... Another favourite of mine! The meal came with steamed rice and sides of kim chi and delicious bean sprout salad. My boyfriend tried the Korean beer they offer called Cass and he said it was delicious! I'm not a beer drinker by any means but it's supposed to be a light and crisp beer =) BTW... our server was excellent - her name was Lucia (sp?). She was unobtrusive enthusiastic and super pleasant! Pretty good! My favourite was the Korean BBQ ribs, must order! We were a group of 7, and the seating wasn't too bad. It didn't feel crowded whatsoever but the place wasn't busy either at the time. I don't recommend the one with seafood medley, it had one mussels and just a bunch of scallops that weren't that good. If you're used to good seafood, then do not order that. Not sure what it's called but you'll see it in the menu something about seafood medley. Overall, I recommend this restaurant. It felt like a homemade cooking and the server was friendly. read more

So..I have been going to Bul Gogi since I went to U of A in the 80's. As poor students we went because of the endless rice, bean sprout salad and Kim Chi..and the great affordable food. Took the family there last night...and found things to have changed significantly! Rice was $5.00, the server hardly came by and I had to call her several times to get more rice and kim chi; we got 3 pieces of shortribs on the pate for $27.00 and 4 pieces of chicken for $20.00!!! appies of 6 deep fried wontons..$15.00! and the food was not what it used to be..meat was tough and chicken was dry! Then I go to pay and my only tip options are 15% or 20% or 25%..really? what happened to 10% option if the server avoids you at all costs? All this on top of the old tired decore and dingey carpet that has not changed since I was there in 1987! Sorry folks at Bul Go Gi House..you are pricing your selves out of contention...unlike 1987, you have a whole lot of competition for my dining out dollar so you really need to reconsider your business strategy or you will be out of business soon. The Bulgogi House has wonderful, authentic tasting food. I have been going there since childhood and they've never disappointed me. They recently renovated the restaurant and while it still has a slightly shabby look, that doesn't effect the taste of the food at all. All of the meals come with sides of kimchi and bean sprouts, as well as a pot of rice. The sizes of the portions are quite large and usually one dish can be split between two people, although I recommend getting a few dishes for variety. They have a very affordable lunch menu with 3 different set meal options. The lunch is quite large and comes with 2 types of meat, deep fried wontons and stir-fry vegetables. If you want the best bang for your buck, get there for lunch time. One of my personal favourites is the galbee ribs. They are delicious and I always order them whenever I go! (If you don't like any red in your meat, make sure to tell them to cook it to well done. Usually there's still a bit of pink in ribs when they are served.) Overall I really love this restaurant and I highly recommend it whenever anyone is looking for good Korean food. read more

Went here on Saturday night and had a great time! There were eight of us and we just dropped in without reservations, yet they were happy to take us and provided great service! The restaurant is a unpretentious little place: It's merely a doorway from outside, but is a tiny, clean space reminiscent of a independent family restaurant or dining room from the 1990's or so. It's incredibly relaxing and the tables are well spread out and the music low so you can enjoy a good conversation with your dining companions. I tried out the Bul Go Gi at a recommendation of a friend (beef with vegetables) and it was DELICIOUS. The veggies still had a bit of bite, the beef melted on the tongue, the flavours were wonderful, and there was plenty of fluffy rice, kimchi and bean sprouts on the side to compliment the meal. In fact, there was so much of everything, I managed another full meal out of my left overs! My friends tried the ribs, one of the hot pots, and a vegetarian dish and everyone said their food was amazing. The great part was the bill: I got two full dinners for only $12! I understand that people are nostalgic for this place and the food is definitely one of the main reasons to go to a place. I am, though extremely disappointed in the decor and antiquated look and feel of the place. I finally managed to make the painstaking 3 block trek from home to this restaurant the other night. We got there around 5, so there were plenty of empty tables - though as we were leaving, the place was filling up FAST. Our waitress was incredibly nice and patient, and the food came out super quick. I'm talking less than 10 minutes. I gotta say, after hearing nothing but great things about this place, I was a little let down. The man and I ordered three dishes to share - a chicken & noodle dish (described as "hot and spicy"), the BBQ beef and a pork and vegetable dish (also, "hot and spicy"). The chicken dish didn't taste like anything. Hot and spicy, my ass. The BBQ was yummy, but not really worth the $18 price tag. The pork dish was quite good, though there was absolutely nothing "hot" nor "spicy" about it. It was actually quite sweet. Tasty, yes..but not at all as described. I was slightly disappointed in the lack of spice and heat in the dishes, as I LOVE spicy food. My date, however, loved all the food and had no complaints. At the end of the meal, we paid around $60 for the three dishes and two beers, and took an assload of food home (I'm planning on adding my OWN heat to the leftovers). I'm sure I will go back, considering it's just a five minute walk from home, but I don't think Bul Go Gi House is somewhere I'll be offering up as a destination for dinner with friends or family. This is a "diamond in the ruff" place for me. The outside of the building is old, looks like something you would find in old age England. Then you walk into this place where the smells of food fill your senses and stomach starts to groan for KOREAN BBQ! The sweet scent of the bbq with the smokiness of the grill. Now the inside of the restaurant is kind narrow and hard to move around. Forewarning: when you leave the place, you will smell like the food so change your clothes after if you are going out later in the day. So I ask myself..."self what is it you feel like to day?" I always go for the for the Bul Go Gi (bbq beef). Oh man...a lil rice on the side with some kimchi. Heaven I tell you, heaven. Also the the bean sprouts that is marinated with green onions. There are other great choices on the menu if you feel like chicken or pork and also some exquisite dishes that I have yet to try.You don't need to wear a suite and tie for this place. Bul Go Gi House was the very first Korean restaurant in Edmonton, and it remains a favourite for me, in spite of the fact that it has been in dire need of renovations since about 1987... I do not go for the décor, I go for the food. I have had many memorable meals here, and have tried most everything on the menu without once being disappointed. The fact that this place is almost always busy is a sign that many folks feel the same way I do. If you are looking for style, classy décor and wait staff in traditional garb, look elsewhere. If you are looking for good home style Korean served up by nice people in a "character" environment, Bul Go Gi is your spot. read more

One of my favorite restaurants. Fairly casual and comfortable, and great food. My personal favorites are the deep fried vegetables, and the BBQ chicken. The bul go gi is of course very good as well. When I first went, it looked almost shady and I was a bit concerned, but don't let that deter you - the food is excellent and you'll have a great time. One thing though, as another reviewer pointed out, anything you wear will come out reeking of the place. I once made the mistake of wearing my only winter jacket there, and the next day I had more than a few people wondering where that weird smell was coming from! read more

I have heard of Bul Go Gi House but I didn't realize what it was, or even where it was! Out for a drive with the husband, he decided to take me over to Bul Go Gi. We had opted for takeout since we were doing errands and just wanted to go home. He ordered the sweet and sour pork, and I just had the bulgogi beef. I can't say that I've eaten a lot of this type of cuisine, but it was super tasty! It was a huge portion, and I was so hungry that I finished everything. It was hot, and really fast too! I can't give too much review of the restaurant setting itself, only that you'd never think it was a restaurant! I'd love to go back and try some other things, and maybe dine in! read more

We had less than an hour to eat. The restaurant is located in a short walking distance from the theater. It was definitely a pleasant surprise to find this place! The quality of food here is excellent especially considering the price point. The servings are big enough for sharing. My friend and I ordered bulgogi beef with veggies and kimchi fried rice. All for about $30 for the two of us! The food was delicious! The food made me feel like we were eating at someone's house. We were seated fairly quickly and the service was pretty quick. Prior to visiting Bul Go Gi House, my only other experience having Korean food was at a food court after which I thought I hated kimchi. Well I should have known better- thanks Bul Go Gi House for showing me what good Korean food should taste like! Despite being super busy, we had prompt and friendly service throughout our entire meal. There were six of us, and we ordered the Dinner for Six (2), which I definitely recommend. Super yummy jap-chae, delicious wontons, and to die for bbq ribs! Portions are generous- even after several helpings each, we took home quite a bit of leftovers. It's not my fave Korean restaurant in town, but it's okay. I like it, but I don't love it. I think their general Korean fare is pretty decent, but not for the prices they offer -- for example, for equivalent price, Bi-Bim-Baab further south has a MUCH much nicer interior, and more fanciful presentation of dishes, while Bul Go Gi House is a lot more stripped down. Which, as you should know based on my reviews, I don't mind at all (my fave places can be dives), but then the taste should blow me away. I think if you are here, you have to go for the BBQ, and order the kalbi and the bul go gi, the restaurant namesake. I wasn't impressed with their fish stew as, ironically, it tasted too fishy to me. And despite being into "authentic" Asian food, I have to say my FAVE in the entire restaurant is their unearthly red, deep fried and battered, spicy and sweet chicken! I don't know what it's called on the menu, but the description is there. It's my husband's fave, too, and he will hoard it all to himself. I had passed by Bul Go Gi many times but something about the outside had always given me pause. Korean food had used to be a bi-weekly lunchtime treat at my last job and I have yet to find an equivalent Korean resto in Edmonton. Today, it was just me and my eldest who favorite food is ribs, but somehow she has never had Korean short ribs. So, as we would be in the Bonnie Doon area, I decided that we would come here for supper. We ordered bul-gal-bee (beef short ribs), goon-man-doo (deep fried wonton), and bi-bim-bap (veg with rice) which was enough since it was just two of us. The bul-gal-bee and goon-man-doo were awesome, but the bi-bim-bap was boring. We also enjoyed the kimchee and sesame bean sprouts. The decor is pretty plain and rundown. And I finally realized what gave me pause all those times I passed. THERE ARE NO WINDOWS. It's quite strange. My coworkers and I went there for lunch on a recommendation we should try this place out. I am not one for Asian food all that much although I've gone out for Chinese food a little too much lately. So my coworker said "trust me on the #3 special." So we all ordered the same thing which consisted of beef ribs, chicken breast, pork wontons and steamed veggies and rice. Before that was the barley soup, sprouts and kimchi. It was just enough food to satisfy the appetite and for a reasonable price. The only issue was the kimchi wasn't spicy enough but 100% I would go back again. Next time we all go, I will ask for the hotpots and have a shot of soju. ;) read more

This place is a hidden gem! The decor is hideous, 70s-style and outdated, but don't let that deter you. The first time I walked in the door, I was so skeptical, but I'm glad I stayed anyway. The food here is delicious! Huge portions, super decent price, fresh and filling. Their kimchi is great (and complimentary!), I always order 4 or 5 portions throughout my meal. They give you so much food - heaping plates of deliciousness - every time I've been, I've never been able to finish a meal, so I end up packing it up to go, which means yummy left overs for lunch the next day! A staple of Korean food in Edmonton. The prices are decent, and the food is tasty. Bul Go Gi House has not been able to really improve or dissolve since I've started going there over 20 years ago. For solid Korean Food , I'd recommend going here. It's a family owned place with the pros and cons of that. You know what I mean, the servers are obviously untrained family members but the cooking is great. Why did it get 3 stars? Good food Why didn't it get 4 or 5 stars? I came here with a friend before volunteering for a show at La Cite. Bul Go Gi House is a Korean restaurant and it looks like a little hole-in-the-wall kind of place. The decor is a bit outdated, but I don't actually mind that. It actually kind of makes the restaurant a bit charming and you can definitely get the family-run vibe from being here as well. The menu has a lot of options, and the prices are decent and the portions are huge. I got a green tea to drink and then I had the bul go gi, because it's the name of the restaurant so I figured the dish their restaurant is named after is bound to be good. The bul go gi is a bbq beer and vegetables. Along with it they bring a giant pot of rice, plus kimchi (spicy pickled cabbage), and a bean sprout coleslaw. I didn't have the coleslaw, but I did have the the kimchi, which was good and not too spicy. I've only had Korean food a few times before, but I really like the bul go gi dish. The meat was tender and had a lot of flavour, and I didn't find the dish super salty. There was a lot of food, and I had to take some home. My friend got some soup, but they have the plates on the table, and it seems like this would be the kind of place where you could eat family style, and try a little bit of what everyone is having. The service was nice and pretty quick. The plate that I had beside me at the table, which was there when I sat down, had a dead flea on it, and so that was a little gross. But hey those things happen and the waitress quickly brought over another plate when I asked for one. The food was really good when I ate it, but a few hours after I wasn't feeling so great. I'm hoping it wasn't something i ate at bul go gi house, but process of elimination says otherwise. I'm always willing to give places a second chance, so maybe I'll order something else on the menu and have better luck. read more
