Another great bar in Charleston! We came here after riding the Lime Bikes (which make you surprisingly very hot) and sat at the bar for a couple drinks. The food is delish. We tried several things and split them. The legit anchovy Caesar salad was a nice compliment to my first beverage (a Bloody Mary). Also, the iced water was served in a chilled pint glass which was a nice welcome on this Humid Charleston summer day. We then dove into some Disco Fries which were divine... The perfect ratio of fresh, hand-cut fried potatoes to topping-- leaving no naked fry left behind of the braised beef, caramelized onions, melted mozzarella and groovy gravy which tucked nicely into every nook and cranny, coating the spaces between toppings and wasn't runny, nor clumpy; quite flavorful without being overly salty. And then we read about the Burger of the Week and decided we had to try that next... It was served chopped-style, think Philly cheese steak meets a burger salad, on a perfectly buttered and broiled baguette. It was chocked full of fresh toppings-- onion, bell peppers, tomatoes, burger, two types of cheese and Romain lettuce (I normally order my burgers without lettuce unless it's shredded because I don't like soggy lettuce, but this had just the right amount of crunch to it! I got a side of the jalapeno hush puppies to go with the burger and the sweet honey butter was a nice compliment to the crunchy outside and surprisingly fluffy inside. I did try a couple of the adult beverages: *Starting with the Bloody Mary was a good choice to celebrate the start of dinner. It was a semi-sweet and delightfully subtle spice (thank you for the celery salt) that is made with an infused bacon vodka and garnished with delicious pimento cheese stuffed olives. *Their take on the Moscow Mule with Strawberry puree was delightful and refreshing. *The Espresso Martini was pretty and could use a tiny tweek but was solid and the offer of making it Irish ($2 add-on) might actually be the fix to set it off. *The Ginny's Garden was probably my favorite of the fruit variety and it was made with Gin, a favorite of mine. *The I Carried a Watermelon does need a little work and I spoke with the owner, Dan (who introduced himself to every guest in the restaurant as they were seated and checked back in throughout the entire meal), to offer a solution to make this drink as great as it's name (I'm looking at you, Dirty Dancing...) as it has great potential, just wasn't quite there... There were so many great looking items on the menu and I will definitely be back with friends! If even to pop in for the fries alone... Seriously... So many options to build your own or go with one of their fabulous creations... You can't go wrong there! read more

I have absolutely no words. This was the best experience at a restaurant I've ever had. If you are anywhere in the U.S. I 100% recommend this place. You can make a road trip just to visit this restaurant and it would be worth it. Every single thing about it was wonderful. The service was excellent and my family was treated with care. The music wasn't too loud or too quiet. It was perfect. Last but not least, the food. Where do I begin. The fries were absolutely delicious. The chicken was grilled well and so was the hot dog. It was amazing. My chicken sandwich. It was the best thing I ever ate in my entire life. That is no exaggeration. The buns - super soft. The pickles - not too sour but perfect. The chicken. The chicken. It was heart warming. Fried to perfection with wonderful flavor and breading. So wonderfully tender it was like butter. I had the time of my life downing that sandwich. Great casual spot to grab a burger and a beer. We were greeted and seated immediately when we walked in. I got the SouthPaw burger and it was just what I needed. It was a big burger but it didn't fall apart when I bit into it, which was great. It's a double smash patty with special sauce and all the fixings for $13, which is a steal nowadays. I wish that I could report a better experience at Bumpa's as the ambiance and menu were both great. But the actual meal experience left a lot to be desired. Of course a number of dishes were fried, and all of them were subpar. The breading on the fish for fish and chips was too thick and bland, the hush puppies were undercooked with basically raw batter in the middle (even after sending them back to be redone) and the fried green tomatoes were overdone and tasteless. Of our party of six, only two of the dishes were notably good...the others were just barely passable pub fare even when ordering specials. I will say the drinks were amazing. And the service was good overall (although the sever had to "warm up" a bit over the course of the meal). Perhaps we just caught an off moment for the kitchen, given the plethora of good reviews. But it was the worst meal we had during our 4 days in Charleston which is a shame. read more

I have been raving about Bumpas ever since I went. It has always been on my list of places to try, but I don't often find myself in that area of downtown these days. Then I saw a picture of the disco fries with short rib on Instagram and said that's it, I'm going there on Friday. We went on the earlier side and got there right before the rush. Live music was starting soon so we snagged a booth on the side. Of course we ordered the disco fries and I couldn't resist getting a scotch egg as well. The cocktails looked great, but they had good deals on wine so we ordered a bottle of malbec. We inquired about the larger size of fries because we were sharing it and our server told us that it was for like 6 people so we got the small and she was right. We could have not even had the scotch egg and we would have both been full off the one order of fries. The meat was so tender and the fries are perfect. I really wanted to love Bumpa's but the service was extremely slow which kinda put a damper on the whole experience. We came in on a Saturday afternoon around 2. We were met right away by what would appear to be one of the managers and he asked if we wanted a seat at the bar or table. We opted for the bar because the stools had good serration and all in all, didn't appear to be too busy. I shit you not, it was over a half hour before the bartender greeted us and came to take our drink order. I ordered one of their signature cocktails, the parely legal, which comes with a cinnamon and sugar rimmed glass. I watched as the bartender covered the entire glass in the mixture. It's a good thing we weren't thirsty because it took about ten minutes for the wife to get her glass of wine and about 15 for me to get mine. When he dropped of our drinks he immediately left before asking us if we needed anything or before we could ask if we needed anything. It took another 15 minutes before i could wave him down to put in a food order. Again I had to ask him, and literally wave, hand in the air, to get his attention because he was so oblivious. By the time we got our food it didn't really matter how amazing the disco fries are or how on point the beef was, we were completely over it and couldn't wait for the check. I'll give it another go at some point because everyone has bad days but it'll probably be awhile. read more
