Oh man when I say this has to be in my top 5 BBH restaurants of all time, I mean it! We recently went on our anniversary trip to the PNW and I was looking for an authentic BBH place in Portland. You cannot take the Asian out of me, even if we visit the PNW, haha. I have to have my Vietnamese food fix. This restaurant caught my eye. The no-frills interior and the fact that I saw a ton of banana blossoms in other Yelpers' reviews was a dead giveaway that this place would be good. And boy was I right. It was a sweltering day when we went (apparently we visited during a heat wave), but that didn't stop us from eating there. The restaurant is located in a pretty ghetto part of Portland, but I didn't feel unsafe eating there. The swamp cooler was blasting and there was a Vietnamese soap opera playing. We were already set on ordering what they were known for, so we quickly placed our order. The owner was super nice and service was so attentive. He brought out iced teas for us as well. It didn't take very long for our hot bowls of BBH to arrive. First to our table were the freshest herbs and banana blossoms. I have never seen so many banana blossoms when ordering BBH in my life, it made me super happy to see them! Small side dishes of fish sauce with chilies were also served with our BBH, and I eagerly dug in. Everything was so good! The meats were tender and the pork knuckles were so fatty. The cha was also nice with a good spicy kick from the peppercorns. We ordered our BBH spicy and it was indeed spicy, as it should be. The pork blood was also salted and actually pretty flavorful! I ate my husband's pork blood cubes bc he didn't want them. I added the chili fish sauce to my broth and it definitely enhanced the flavor. I didn't bother to ask about adding shrimp paste as I generally do because I enjoyed the clean flavor of the broth itself. I did, however, ask for more limes, since I enjoy having extra limes with my BBH. The noodles were a tad overcooked but not mushy, so that was fine. We briefly chatted with the owner when we were done, and he asked where we were from. When I told him I've had plenty of BBH in SJ but especially loved his version, he said he knew where that was and wholeheartedly thanked us for visiting his restaurant! Drinks: - N/A Food: - The Bún bò Huế (BBH) Tò Đặc Biệt was textbook. I grew up eating BBH all my life and this is probably the closest to homemade BBH you'll get in Portland. The broth was lite and yet had tons of umami. The huyết (congealed pork blood) was perfect. It had a bouncey consistency and wasn't grainy at all. The only complaint I have is that I wished there was a little more veggies. I like to pack my bowl with as much veggies/herbs as humanly possible, but that's just my personal preference. I also liked the dipping sauce. It was surprisingly not too spicy. Ambience: - This is what I would categorize as a hole in the wall. - There's nothing write home about décor, the metal bars covering the windows is apt considering the location. - This place reminds me of visiting a relatives home and being greeted with a nice bowl of noodles. Definitely a hole in the wall that specializes in one thing and one thing only: bun bo hue (it's literally the name, don't make assumptions). I'm from San Jose, so bun Bo hue broth essentially flows thru my veins most of the year and I was really excited to try some in Portland. We came on a Saturday afternoon around 2 pm and it was still jam packed with folks. The staff mostly speaks viet, but you can still signal and point to get by like I did lol. Super kind folks, just don't order anything other than BBH if you ask me. My husband got a rice plate which was fine, but a bit pricey for the portion size, and we also tried the spring rolls and I could hear them asking why anyone would order it (fair point from the sassy Asian wait staff we know and love but I was craving some, don't judge). Taste wise, they were fine, but you could definitely tell they don't make them a lot. The BBH was really tasty, a bit different than San Jose style I'd say, DEFINITELY spicy so if you're not ready for the heat ask them to lighten the spice. Bun Bo Hue is my favorite Vietnamese food of all time. I could eat it every day if possible. I even considered applying to work here because I love it so much, but we would be out of soup to sell everyday. It has pork, beef, pork knuckles, Vietnamese sausage, and pork blood (don't knock it till you try it brothers). In fact, if I see that I'm the only white guy there in an Asian, Latin American or African restaurant, I know I'm in the right place. THIS was the right place! I was set to follow someone in the restaurant's recommendation for a vermicelli noodle dish in order to avoid spiciness, but the chef told me that they could make the namesake soup non spicy so I opted for that. What a delicious Vietnamese soup! It's not Pho, though it is distinctively Vietnamese. Warning, there are tendons and cold cuts in it, so if you're not adventurous in your food choices you might not like it. I loved it. I also had the rice paper rolls with shrimp and pork. Some of the best I've had. The Hue steamed pork sausage was nice, but it's a big portion so I'll take some home. The most flavorful Bun Bo Hue that I've tasted so far. 5 stars for the food. They are stingy on the meat and quantity for the price they charge though. They're one of the few places that offer iced tea with your food (a staple in Vietnam). The place is inside a run down building. A Vietnamese noodle restaurant NOT dedicated to pho??!!! Can you even believe it?? We were so excited to try Bun Bo Hue restaurant in Portland, Oregon and we were not let down! The old Vietnamese couple running the restaurant were the nicest, offering water and complimentary tea as we stepped in to the restaurant. It may be small, but it was bright and very clean. They helped explain the menu to us and we decided on the two noodle soups they had (neither of which were pho!). We got the special version which includes all toppings, including pork blood. One was spicy and one was not. A big plate of additional toppings came out, including beansprouts, lime, cilantro, banana blossoms, and more. Everything tasted delicious and the portions were so large! We were so full. The soup was so good I drank all of it. If you're not a fan of noodle soups, that's ok too, because they offer rice plates, spring rolls, and other Vietnamese dishes. They even have Vietnamese iced coffee! My friend really likes this place and comes here often. In fact, he frequents this place so often he doesn't even need to order anymore! He sits down and they bring him his order!! Talk about a creature of habit and familiarity! If he brings company then the staff will stop by the table and ask what everybody wants to eat... Not a very large venue, decent amount of seating. Open kitchen...sorta. You can definitely take a peek and see what the staff is doing. Parking can be a bit challenging, I don't remember a parking lot nearby, but we were able to find street parking right outside the restaurant...so the parking Gods were definitely smiling upon us that day! I wasn't too sure what to expect since Man Jose has some brilliant offerings in Viet cuisine. I gotta say after eating here, Bun Bo Hue is on par with anything in Man Jose ;-) 16. Although credit due for actively nimbly cleaning during the lunch hour, the overpowering bouquet of Clorox bleach tile spray hits you right away as you enter, sit and unfortunately while you dine. Really intense. Soup lukewarm on a frigid day? Not expecting the oily style broth, the soup was too cold to finish. Egg noodles a bit overcooked. Hole in the wall with a friendly asian auntie bringing you out warm comfort food. TBH, way cleaner than most Vietnamese restaurants I've been to and way nicer service! Normally I dont comment on service at a Vietnamese restaurant because that is literally not what you're going for ~ but she was so nice I had to call that out :) She even saw a loose thread on my friend's sleeve and pulled it off without saying anything as she came to take our order. So cute hehe. We ordered the BBH spicy and one person in our group had a shellfish allergy so she recommended the bbq pork noodle dish. I've already reviewed this spot, but I thought I would review their service during the pandemic. I still stand by my first review, but if you've dropped by recently you know they have a whole new look. Say goodbye to the hole in the wall vibes. The tables have a marbled look with proper chairs, no more connected benches. The new flooring is nice and bright. The place got major work done, it's no longer what I remembered. The kitchen is still an open concept and still very clean. I cannot wait to dine inside. The staff is still just as warm as I remembered, family owned and operated. The warmth that comes with the service really feels like coming to a family member's spot or an old family friend's restaurant. It's really comforting to feel like home without being home. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it feels like the portions are massive to go. Not a complaint, just what I noticed, I saw other reviews that their portions seem smaller though. The meat has been consistently fresh every time I've gotten it recently. I'm sensitive to the smell of old pork so this is great. I started getting BBH with spice on the side so I can adjust the spice level when I'm at home. I think I much prefer it this way than ordering it with the spice level already stated.
