Fast service and good food! I got the standard bun bo hue w everything and it was good! I am usually a 2/3star when I get thai food and this was spicy!! I wasn't able to finish it because it was so spicy so beware if your spice tolerance is similar to mine!
Oh man when I say this has to be in my top 5 BBH restaurants of all time, I mean it! We recently went on our anniversary trip to the PNW and I was looking for an authentic BBH place in Portland. You cannot take the Asian out of me, even if we visit the PNW, haha. I have to have my Vietnamese food fix. This restaurant caught my eye. The no-frills interior and the fact that I saw a ton of banana blossoms in other Yelpers' reviews was a dead giveaway that this place would be good. And boy was I right. It was a sweltering day when we went (apparently we visited during a heat wave), but that didn't stop us from eating there. The restaurant is located in a pretty ghetto part of Portland, but I didn't feel unsafe eating there. The swamp cooler was blasting and there was a Vietnamese soap opera playing. We were already set on ordering what they were known for, so we quickly placed our order. The owner was super nice and service was so attentive. He brought out iced teas for us as well. It didn't take very long for our hot bowls of BBH to arrive. First to our table were the freshest herbs and banana blossoms. I have never seen so many banana blossoms when ordering BBH in my life, it made me super happy to see them! Small side dishes of fish sauce with chilies were also served with our BBH, and I eagerly dug in. Everything was so good! The meats were tender and the pork knuckles were so fatty. The cha was also nice with a good spicy kick from the peppercorns. We ordered our BBH spicy and it was indeed spicy, as it should be. The pork blood was also salted and actually pretty flavorful! I ate my husband's pork blood cubes bc he didn't want them. I added the chili fish sauce to my broth and it definitely enhanced the flavor. I didn't bother to ask about adding shrimp paste as I generally do because I enjoyed the clean flavor of the broth itself. I did, however, ask for more limes, since I enjoy having extra limes with my BBH. The noodles were a tad overcooked but not mushy, so that was fine. We briefly chatted with the owner when we were done, and he asked where we were from. When I told him I've had plenty of BBH in SJ but especially loved his version, he said he knew where that was and wholeheartedly thanked us for visiting his restaurant! I'm so happy I was able to find a hidden gem for my BBH fix during our time in Portland, and will definitely make a special trip to return every time we visit the PNW!
Drinks: - N/A Food: - The Bún bò Huế (BBH) Tò Đặc Biệt was textbook. I grew up eating BBH all my life and this is probably the closest to homemade BBH you'll get in Portland. The broth was lite and yet had tons of umami. The huyết (congealed pork blood) was perfect. It had a bouncey consistency and wasn't grainy at all. The only complaint I have is that I wished there was a little more veggies. I like to pack my bowl with as much veggies/herbs as humanly possible, but that's just my personal preference. I also liked the dipping sauce. It was surprisingly not too spicy. Ambience: - This is what I would categorize as a hole in the wall. - There's nothing write home about décor, the metal bars covering the windows is apt considering the location. - This place reminds me of visiting a relatives home and being greeted with a nice bowl of noodles. It triggers a nostalgic feel for me. Overall: I can't wait to come here again after a long night out. This is hangover food for sure. The service was great, if you're Asian be prepared for the owners to speak to you in Vietnamese right when you walk in. If you are screamish about eating congealed pork blood, this would be the place to try it. I promise you it's amazing.
I have been going to displace for years and it never goes wrong for a bowl of bun bo. Nice cute couple who runs the family business. The parking is spacious and shared with a market next-door. It has become a little bit uncertain with the homelessness around 82nd. But don't let it stop you from coming. I need to try out their other dishes too. Will be back soon!
Definitely a hole in the wall that specializes in one thing and one thing only: bun bo hue (it's literally the name, don't make assumptions). I'm from San Jose, so bun Bo hue broth essentially flows thru my veins most of the year and I was really excited to try some in Portland. We came on a Saturday afternoon around 2 pm and it was still jam packed with folks. The staff mostly speaks viet, but you can still signal and point to get by like I did lol. Super kind folks, just don't order anything other than BBH if you ask me. My husband got a rice plate which was fine, but a bit pricey for the portion size, and we also tried the spring rolls and I could hear them asking why anyone would order it (fair point from the sassy Asian wait staff we know and love but I was craving some, don't judge). Taste wise, they were fine, but you could definitely tell they don't make them a lot. The BBH was really tasty, a bit different than San Jose style I'd say, DEFINITELY spicy so if you're not ready for the heat ask them to lighten the spice. I will say portion was also a bit small for the price, but still justifiable to support a small Asian run business. Come check them out if you're in the area!
Delicious soup that's served with decent amount of meat and noodles! My family enjoyed their food as well. Would definitely come back to have their soup again. The man that was serving was so sweet and nice! Very homestyle vibes
I thought I was walking into someone's house when I pulled up the place. It was so cozy and the hosts were very nice. Food came out fast. We all ordered the same thing. Bun Bo hue with extra beef. I'm just visiting Portland and grew up around great Vietnamese food and this bbh was so good. Nice and spicy. They gave us lots of veggies and mint. No sriracha to be seen, but also not needed. So happy we came and stopped by. Definitely would come back
The service here is top-notch! The mom-and-pop duo is incredibly warm and welcoming--they make you feel right at home. The bún bò Huế is solid, with quality ingredients and a great selection of fresh herbs and veggies. Bonus: there's no strong iron taste from the blood cake. I'll definitely be back!

Bun Bo Hue is my favorite Vietnamese food of all time. I could eat it every day if possible. It has pork, beef, pork knuckles, Vietnamese sausage, and pork blood (don't knock it till you try it brothers). I literally have no idea what they put in their spice, but it's SPICY, one common thing you will hear in the restaurant is someone coughing because they slurped down the wrong pipe. In all seriousness, if you want a mom and pop shop that serves delicious food (their other menu items are delicious as well) , you should check this place out. They are always welcoming of everyone and that's what always has my friends and I coming back.

The bun bo hue is still very fine, the spicy not too spicy for me (there's a little dish of hot pepper fish sauce in case you need more) noodles very silky, gobs of various meats (including plenty of the blood tofu, a favorite), one of the biggest salad plates you'll see in a Vietnamese soup place, and the broth, oh my yummy, Very friendly service, and quick. I remember the special rice plate as being large, varied and tasty. And the place looks very clean (had been a visual issue to some in the past.

This is my favorite Bun Bo Hue spot! The uncle and aunty here are the sweetest people. I willingly drive an hour just to eat here. It has a homey feeling and warmth that just makes your day better. BBH is not my jam but they seem to be some of the best in town! Friendly and fast service, the owners are sweet and hospitable. Interior is clean with tables able to accommodate large parties. I got the chicken soup and it was flavorful but it tasted a bit too 'soup powder base'. I asked for rice noodles but was given egg noodles by mistake, which was fine! If you're in the mood for BBH, this may be just what you need! read more

A friend recommended this place to me since I was craving bun Bo Hue This place is so good for bun Bo hue, it has the right amount of spiciness, very flavorful and the noodles were good! I highly recommend it! We also ordered the banh cuon, but they forgot to make it, guess have to go back to get it next time! read more

This place has a real at-home feeling. I think, had I geown up in this neighborhood, I would've come here a lot. The folks here are very friendly. They have a wide variety of food and it's all very affordable compared to the many other similar restaurants nearby. If you're looking for authenticity, this is definitely a place you should check out. read more
This place has some really good Bun Bo Hue. The store seems very unassuming from the outside, but the inside is clean and simple. I got the regular sized bowl, and I still felt like the portions were great. If you're extra hungry, you can opt to get a large size bowl. For the size of the bowl, I'd say the price is pretty fair. There is a discount if you use cash. I really love the flavor of the soup and the mix of all the ingredients in the bowl like the meat and vegetables. They do offer various other Vietnamese dishes, but I'd say you should definitely check this spot out if you're craving Bun Bo Hue. read more

I got the beef vermicelli bowl and my friend got the bun bo hue. Literally 10/10!! Such a welcoming hole in the wall. They greet you so nicely when you walk in and give you free sweet tea. Ever since I came here I crave their vermicelli bowl. I would recommend, such a homey feeling! read more

The most flavorful Bun Bo Hue that I've tasted so far. 5 stars for the food. They are stingy on the meat and quantity for the price they charge though. They're one of the few places that offer iced tea with your food (a staple in Vietnam). The place is inside a run down building. No real decor, just blank walls (very typical of a restaurant in Vietnam). This is how you know it's a legit authentic place! The staff is very friendly but they seem overwhelmed. It is crowded so don't expect to be greeted right away. Next time I would order the large because the regular is just not enough food read more

Vietnamese food in Portland?? Heard about this place from YouTube and my my my, was I pleasantly surprised. Broth was super flavorful and you get a lot of meat including pigs feet, pigs blood! The noodle bowls come in a small or large and mid-way through eating, I could definitely do the large next time! I'll be back! read more

I'm an American who is not squeamish about trying VERY authentic ethnic food. In fact, if I see that I'm the only white guy there in an Asian, Latin American or African restaurant, I know I'm in the right place. THIS was the right place! I was set to follow someone in the restaurant's recommendation for a vermicelli noodle dish in order to avoid spiciness, but the chef told me that they could make the namesake soup non spicy so I opted for that. What a delicious Vietnamese soup! It's not Pho, though it is distinctively Vietnamese. Warning, there are tendons and cold cuts in it, so if you're not adventurous in your food choices you might not like it. I loved it. I also had the rice paper rolls with shrimp and pork. Some of the best I've had. The Hue steamed pork sausage was nice, but it's a big portion so I'll take some home. I'll definitely be back and I give this place my highest recommendation for people looking for a change from the normal pho Vietnamese place. It's SUPER authentic! read more

This review is well overdue. I come here at LEAST once a month. That's saying a lot for a guy that doesn't eat out very much. Bun Bo Hue is like Pho's sexy spicy cousin. Hard to describe it. Lots of meat, bouncy noodles, a deep broth. Lots of different items to choose from, but I always get their large Bun Bo Hue bowl. Absolutely SLAPS during the winter! Family owned, service is great, prices are great, and the food reminds me of food I had in Vietnam. IT'S THAT GOOD!! Do yourself a favor and go here ASAP. read more
A Vietnamese noodle restaurant NOT dedicated to pho??!!! Can you even believe it?? We were so excited to try Bun Bo Hue restaurant in Portland, Oregon and we were not let down! The old Vietnamese couple running the restaurant were the nicest, offering water and complimentary tea as we stepped in to the restaurant. It may be small, but it was bright and very clean. They helped explain the menu to us and we decided on the two noodle soups they had (neither of which were pho!). We got the special version which includes all toppings, including pork blood. One was spicy and one was not. A big plate of additional toppings came out, including beansprouts, lime, cilantro, banana blossoms, and more. Everything tasted delicious and the portions were so large! We were so full. The soup was so good I drank all of it. If you're not a fan of noodle soups, that's ok too, because they offer rice plates, spring rolls, and other Vietnamese dishes. They even have Vietnamese iced coffee! We found free street parking (1 hour) right next to the restaurant. read more

Fantastic restaurant with a simple menu! This place boasts a clean atmosphere and a friendly, efficient staff. The bun bo hue I got had a super flavorful broth and all the toppings were delicious. The beef was so tender, but the spicy broth I'd ordered wasn't actually spicy which is my only complaint. read more
overall: 4/5 food: 4/5 service: 3.5/5 ambiance: 3/5 surprisingly, i've never heard of this BBH restaurant before and my dad suggested coming here after being put on by his friend. first impressions upon walking into this establishment is that they are authentic. cleanliness is a bit questionable (there was left over lipstick on the tea cups), but that's okay!! we ordered the two BBH bowls- one was larger and the other was smaller, along with shrimp dumplings (which just looked like frozen packed har gow so i would skip on these). the BBH itself was super yummy! i like how they giving the dipping sauces on the side and ask if you want your soup base to be spicy or not. generous portions are given and the food and served fast too. the complimentary tea on the other hand tasted like any other watered down tea served at other asian restaurants, but the one we received was already cold. overall, i would be back again for the BBH! read more

My friend really likes this place and comes here often. In fact, he frequents this place so often he doesn't even need to order anymore! He sits down and they bring him his order!! Talk about a creature of habit and familiarity! If he brings company then the staff will stop by the table and ask what everybody wants to eat... Not a very large venue, decent amount of seating. Open kitchen...sorta. You can definitely take a peek and see what the staff is doing. Parking can be a bit challenging, I don't remember a parking lot nearby, but we were able to find street parking right outside the restaurant...so the parking Gods were definitely smiling upon us that day! I wasn't too sure what to expect since Man Jose has some brilliant offerings in Viet cuisine. I gotta say after eating here, Bun Bo Hue is on par with anything in Man Jose ;-) 16. Bún bò Huế - 5/5 Good size bowl...some generous portions! Tasty broth and a different type of noodle...not familiar with the thicker noodles they used. Can't forget to mention the big old pieces of Pork Blood cubes...great meal for the Winter weather. read more

I love the bun Bo here, very authentic and true taste of Vietnamese Bun Bo. Besides that I wouldn't recommend their other dishes especially the rice dishes. Not the best here but the noodles are good to go. read more

Please educate yourself on the history of MSG tied with anti-asian racism. If you're concerned with MSG I'm assuming that you don't eat any cheese, tomatoes, canned or bagged foods, or mushrooms?
Is this place open on Wednesday? Their menu says they're open 7 days a week but on Yelp it says closed on Wednesday.
