Kenny's is a Cantonese Noodle House in the Portland area. The specialize in wonton noodles. They serve other Canto favorites like congee. The wontons and sui kai that they serve are good. My wife's complaint about it was that they don't give you much. My daughter's wonton noodle soup only came with 4 wontons. My beef brisket and sui kau over noodle came with 3 both 3 pieces of meat and three sui kau. We get a little more in Southern California. My wife kept complaining to me about not enough wontons and meat. The Saipan congee didn't come with very many ingredients. The food was itself was pretty good. The portion was not. Service was good. We came here for lunch. It as rainy and cold and we want some comfort food. We were seated right away. The server brought us menu and hot tea. We ordered Shrimp and Pork Wonton Noodle Soup and Beef Brisket Noodle Soup and Preserved Egg and Pork Congee with Chinese Donut. The food came out quickly. The Congee is so fulfilling. Lots of good ingredients to comfort the chill of the weather. Then our noodle soup came and everything was delicious. Big portions of shrimp and pork wontons. There was about six wontons in the soup. The beef brisket was delicious. Very flavorful and hearty. This is a must go for some good home cooked comfort noodle soup and congee. After so many years of coming back when I'm in town ... this is the third time that all their Noodle items did not meet their own standards!! As you can see I have been coming back to Kenny's since 2018 ( a must stop-by when Im in Portland ), their quality has been slowly eroded over the years, noodles are not al dente at all, in fact it was way over cooked, same as the wontons ( the wrappings are falling off ). Kenny's Noodle House is a delicious tasty Cantonese-style food. It's simple cafe food that is either porridge with a large variety of things that can be inside. There is also noodle soup so if you want something hearty this could be your jam. But right then I was a little bit cold and I wanted a nice bowl of porridge. Don't forget to order the Chinese donuts they are deep fried and you can dip them in the porridge or soup broth! They are so so good! Overall I liked my porridge dish you can order a small or a large and I should have ordered a large because I literally finished all of it. Portland prides itself as a foodie city, but as far as the Asian food scene (though there is solid Korean food), as a city, the PDX doesn't quite measure up to other foodie cities. That said, I have found Kenny's Noodle House to be a solid go-to in my travels to Portland. First, the ambience. This is a simple, no-frills spot. No need to worry about what to wear - you could wear sweats if you so please. Very casual, has that authentic atmosphere with Chinese tunes softly in the background as well. This is most definitely a Cantonese cuisine spot. When I was introduced by a friend here on my first trip to the restaurant, I was told the noodle soups and congee were the main things here. Upon a quick glance of the menu, it was clear the noodle soups were Cantonese in nature (therefore I ordered the wonton noodle soup with traditional Cantonese thin egg noodles) and the congee variety was strong (on a subsequent trip, I ordered the preserved egg with pork). I happen to love a good Cantonese-style congee with all the flavorings all deeply locked in, with the diced green onions on top to garnish and cap off the flavoring. All in all, the food was tasty! Totally did the trick. The congee was soothing to the soul as it should be. White pepper is a good thing to add for those who like to add a little kick. I also personally love adding some red vinegar to taste. The wonton noodle soup was also good. The meat was moist with each bite, and it helps that the soup is right there to add to that effect and flavoring. Service was also good. Very attentive and sweet. There's a parking lot in front of the restaurant - most of the time, you should be fine to find a spot. Honestly, I have no complaints about this place. I wouldn't say it's as spectacular as some Houston Cantonese spots I've been to (I'm a fan of Tan Tan for similar dishes plus the A1 iykyk lol), so I will rate this place 4 stars. Immediately when you walk in and it feels like a great mom and pop noodle shop. The wonton and brisket noodles were easily some of the best I've had. Rich, flavorful beef broth with such a nice chew and bounce from the noodles. The wontons were also large and had minced pork and shrimp inside. The mixed meat congee was also a great order. I haven't written a review until now because honestly, I don't think they care either way, and that's kind of the vibe: take it or leave it. Here's what keeps me coming back: - You can order a side of steamed pork liver, kidney, stomach, or beef tripe. I enjoy mine just as is or with whatever else I'm craving. - It's one of the few places in Portland that still offers these specific cuts done in a traditional way. The not-so-great stuff: - Chinese donuts are hit or miss, sometimes crunchy, sometimes stale. - Wonton noodle soup disappointed last visit. The noodles had such a strong yeasty smell I could barely eat them. Their wontons are whole-shrimp style (not minced), which might be how they've always done it and I just forgot. - Service is nearly non-existent, so don't expect warm hospitality. Last time I went, the lady asked "no tip?" before I even finished paying in cash. My receipt wasn't in English either. It's a tiny space, tables packed tightly together so prepare to wait or get cozy with strangers during peak hours. Parking: They do have a lot, but use caution pulling in/out from SE Powell. I have driven by this place for years and have never stopped, despite hearing amazing things about it. Since I was in town and wanted to check it out, I decided to stop by shortly after lunch on a Saturday. The parking is unfortunate given getting in and out can be difficult with traffic. When I went in, there was only two tables free (originally one table that was split into two), so I was seated with someone else who was not with me. I was okay with this tho, since they were quite busy. It's rather active and noisy in here given the small space, but it doesn't feel claustrophobic or cramped. I was given a menu almost immediately and brought a cup of hot tea. I placed my order, number 19, which is the sliced kidney and sliced liver noodle soup, with thin egg noodles. I also added a Chinese donut. The waitress seemed a bit surprised that I ordered the 19, probably because I'm as white as snow and was wearing work boots and a Carhartt jacket, but I'm used to that. (She wanted to make sure I was aware of what I was ordering). The Chinese donut came out first and was amazing. It was hot and crispy and slightly oily in the best way possible. They brought me out a dipping sauce which was soy sauce and japanenos. My noodle dish came out probably about 5 minutes later. The noodle dish was very good. The texture of the noodles were perfect, and the broth was delicious. The liver was sliced thinly and did not taste overly hematic (that iron flavor liver gets). I would have appreciated if the kidneys had been sliced more, since they were in two very large pieces... But all things considered it had a very good flavor and texture. Nothing was overcooked or mushy, and the table has ample sauces and condiments. I don't know if I would order the dish again, mainly because I usually like my kidneys, sliced thinner and also marinated a bit, but that's not a bad thing, just personal preference. I'm happy to report the beloved HKG style noodle and rice porridge joint, while with different owners now still kept the same recipes and execution. Maybe about 9 months ago my views were touch and go for a while as they changed up the wonton noodle soup broth quite a bit... but the dried shrimp infused flavors are back to "normal" and everything else from the beef stew, to the fermented bean curd sauced veggies are like the original. Thank goodness because this is THE singular HKG style noodle joint in PDX that reminds me of "home". I know this place doesn't look spectacular from the outside. Yeah, sure, it's a little worn, graveled road, right parking spaces, not the cleanest walls, and some of the faux bricks needed to be taped down, and the windows look like they haven't been washed since it opened up--but the food is spot on. There's limited seating, so be prepared to wait or just hang out. My kids love the food. It's comfort food for Chinese folks like me. The broth is flavorful and fragrant. Everything was amazing. I actually came here with a party of like 18 ppl for a Sunday lunch around 12:45 and every table was filled. But the server did a great job dividing us up into small groups and seating us for the soonest available table and we all got seated within 10 minutes. That's great service right there. Their food is also amazing. I wish I got to take pictures but what's posted on the Yelp photos are accurate. I would suggest getting the you tiao (Chinese donut), any kind of porridge (we tried the fish one and it was so yummy!) and also the beef noodle soup. The wontons were also delicious. Liver is something that drives people away because it can be dry and have a very strong taste. I have no idea what they do to their liver, but it has the typical liver taste but lessened by a lot. It is not dry whatsoever either. I've been coming here since I was in middle school and the quality of it still hasn't changed. If you're into crunchy textures and things that soak up liquid well, definitely get the Chinese donut to dip into any soup/congee. One staff works the whole front of house and she's very friendly and efficient. We tried the Beef Brisket with Wonton Noodle Soup that came with tons of thin egg noodles, super tender beef, and some of the most well-stuffed wontons I've had (a whole shrimp in each!).
