Rarely do I give a really bad review however Buoy One in Riverhead, earned it. The only good thing was the ambiance outside. Pleasant. I had eaten at Buoy One, on a visit, a few years ago and was very eager to return. Rather than harp on the poor service (for which I only tipped 10%, another rarity) I will focus on the quality of the food. The cole slaw was delicious. I ordered a fisherman's platter. I might as well have been at Long John Silvers, a fast food fish place. The baked potato came out on a silver plate with no butter or sour cream. Upon asking the waitress brought out a small plastic container of about 1 teaspoon of sour cream. My sister's cod and salmon burger was good. And for almost $60 for 2 of us I wish I had gone to Long John Silvers! I will never return . read more

This is really painful as, for years, Buoy One was my favorite restaurant on Long Island. We would alternate between the Riverhead and Westhampton locations and the quality was superb regardless of which location. I was saddened to see that the Westhampton location closed as it was the nicer atmosphere of the two. But we went to the Riverhead location the other night and had a dismal experience. First and foremost, there was no AC. So we were seated outside, under umbrellas which kept half of us in the shade and the other half baking in the sun. We went early as advised by the restaurant on the phone and were seated and ordering by 4:30. After two people ordered scallops, we were informed by the server that they had just sold out...at 4:30. To keep cooler and hydrated in the heat, we asked for some ice for the drinks and were told that they were out of ice. When the shrimp arrived, and they consistently had THE BEST shrimp I've ever had in my life...they not only looked anemic but they hadn't been cleaned thoroughly so the poorly deveined or smeared "veining" was visible through the breading on the fried shrimp. Not the most appetizing image. I found myself removing the breading and deveining the shrimp before eating them only to find that they were over cooked and tough. People who know my affection for Buoy One watched me and asked if they've "slipped". Now this could have been an off night. But I'm not going to be rushing back to find out. And this is a restaurant at which I've traveled from Pennsylvania to dine...because it was THAT good. The owner is a dynamic and capable woman and I can only assume that this happened outside of her purview. I don't know if it's changed hands or what precipitated the closure of the other location but I don't think it bodes well for the future. So this is a sad review for me. If you don't have AC, buy some awnings so that none of your guests have to bake in the sun. If your ice machine breaks, send the bus person to 7-11 and buy ten bags of ice. And don't, under any circumstances, let your amazing menu items drop in prep care or quality. read more

I ordered the 1/2 pound order of crab legs with butter. I got the saddest, coldest blandest cluster of snow crab legs. Came from out of town for a business trip and this was one of the few places open in the area. I came an hour before closing and a middle aged woman with blonde hair greeted me with a "hey we are closing in an hour"... no hello... I asked if I could sit down since it sounded like I was being a pain. Note: the restaurant was empty. She proceeded to have me order from the board at the front by the cash register. No real menu, just a take out menu... and then she said if I sat down I would have to tip for service... okay thanks for reminding me. I had the clam strips, no fries which was mostly small pieces of breading and perhaps like 5 strips of actual clam? And fresh oysters on the half shell. Oysters seemed okay but there was cracked shell all over, I was constantly pulling the shells out of my mouth. Oh and I ordered the lavender ice tea. Originally it just tasted like regular ice tea nothing special, but my waitress (same blonde lady) offered to put more syrup in it. So she warmed up a bit. Thanks--- must be for the tip....I was still hungry so I ordered more food--half an order of fried oysters. Those were actually delicious so I'll add a star for those. Overall, not great service and I left the place within 30 mins since I'm dining alone... thanks for the warm welcome! Found this place on Yelp. Thought it would be a good place to stop for a meal with friends after the winery. I'm a seafood lover. Service here is excruciatingly slow!! Took forever to get menus and our order placed. And took even longer for food to come!! One of the longest waits ever seriously. We chose to sit in the outside seating area. Apparently one two waitresses service this area and they're so overwhelmed that they pretty much ghosted the entire meal. Multiple times I saw other people who were just sat down looking around to find someone take their order. Not a good sign! I ordered the baked clams and shrimp caesar salad. Salad was okay, dressing wasn't all that but shrimp were very fresh just wish they gave more for $14.95. The clams were greasy I've definitely had better. Also posted what my friends had. Visited on a Saturday night. The indoor seating area was empty and the outdoor patio filled. Advice to sit outside and breathe some fresh air under the umbrellas. It's very noisy and smelly inside--the kitchen is working hard, so if you sit inside, you'll be wafted in the noise and pretty heavy aromas coming from the inside, which won't provide for a very relaxing experience. All the food is served in large metal pans instead of plates. The portions are average, pretty filling. Got Thai sauteed salmon for $27, which the waitress recommended over almond crusted dish of the same price. The dish was very greasy. The salmon was nothing special, lightly breaded. The spinach and sweet potato mash were soaked in the greasy, tasteless Thai sauce, so couldn't really enjoy. A huge disappointment. Definitely not worth the Manhattan price of $27. Get the almond crusted salmon instead. My bf got the 1lb bucket of snow crab legs and a whole lobster. The lobster and legs were good and fresh, nothing extraordinary or surprising. They came with a side of fries and a corn on the cob. The fries were crunchy, light, and perfectly not greasy. They were also sprinkled with red pepper, which gave them a nice touch. Anchors away in Riverhead! After knocking out the trio of breweries in the area, we (two buddies and my sis) were in desperate need of sustenance. I gave my phone to one of said chums and had him scroll through my bookmarked Yelp spots. He landed on Buoy One and away we went! The exterior of BO looks like a fish market by the sea...and then you go inside and hey, it is a fish market! Cuts and fillets in the glass display to your right with surprisingly no overpowering fishy scent to be found. Well-decorated in that area of the place. The left hand side is where you'll chow down on your meal. A tiny dining area with a handful of tables. Quaint (almost cozy) and when we arrived, crowded. Luckily a couple tables were finishing up so our wait was only minutes. The menu is filled with fishy delights. Plenty to choose from as they have their "claws" in all types of seafood. I'm not an overly adventurous eater of the sea so I stuck with some simple selections. A bowl of New England clam chowder to start with, clam strips and fries as the main dish. The chowder was creamy with what seemed to be pieces of bacon mixed in. Not the best I've had on the isle, but original enough in flavor. Clam strips did their job, though I might consider ordering some other fried favorite next time around as I can't think back on the meal and truly remember the taste or breading. Fries were crispy and worked well with the strips. Not to be forgotten is the BBQ slaw. Somewhat creamy with a little sweet spice. It wrapped things up nicely. The rest of the table had a variety of dishes (fried shrimp, pasta medley, fisherman's basket) and all had them flapping their fins by the end. Overall, Buoy One may not be the greatest seafood you're going to consume, but it's worthy of a visit, for a casual dinner or to grab some grub from the market. We used to like Buoy one. Last time we went, the hostess told us that there was an hour wait. We left our name and returned 40 minutes later. The hostess said she has called us and we were not there. So, we waited for another 30 minutes. When we ordered, I asked for a kids menu for my 6 and 7 year old kids. The waitress, Dana, said that they don't have a kid menu printed so she told us what the kids menu is. So, I placed the order for all the adults. At the end, I said, "For the kids, we want a pasta with white sauce and a fish and chips." Then we waited for over an hour for our food. Really??? I already wait close to 90 minutes for the travel and then another 60 minutes for the food. No apology... nothing. The worst is yet to come. When she brought us the check. She charged us adult price for the kids fish & chips. I asked her if she has made a mistake. Dana reply, "I don't know. All I heard you said was Fish & Chips." Then she turn her back on me and left. I was so so so upset. What kind of service is this. We have 4 adults and 2 kids, clearly we already ordered 4 adult portions. Also, I specifically said "For the kids...." Even worse, Dana gave me the check without a pen. I walked up to her and asked for a pen politely and she said "wow, you walked away so fast and I did not have a chance to give you the pen!" It's 86 degrees outside on a Saturday afternoon, and the ceiling fan in the dining area is off. It was unbearably hot. We were sweating and uncomfortable. I saw other tables had the same problem. Just an awful awful experience. The food did not make up for the hot sauna dining room. My white sauce clam linguine was sour and the sauce was quite heavy similar to an alfredo sauce. Tried two seafood places on our 2 day getaway and we enjoyed Buoy One more. We started with a dozen of raw oysters. Fresh fresh fresh! Horseradish was deliciously strong. We then had the clam bake which included a 1 and 1/4 lb lobster, steamers, mussels, shrimp, corn on the cob and baked potato. All for a reasonable price of $26! Buoy One does not look like much from the outside but once you go in there is a clean and renovated seating area as well as a patio. Service was great. We will be back! It was the perfect day to enjoy delicious fried seafood on the back patio of this adorable little place. Stopped by a little before 2pm yesterday with my boyfriend before we headed to the outlets. There was a sign at the front of the restaurant that said "wait to be seated," so that's what we did, until someone behind the counter told us we could go wherever we pleased. We opted to sit outside since it was such a gorgeous day out. A waitress followed us to our seats with menus and promptly brought us the waters we asked for. She took our order quickly and was very polite. She continuously checked on us throughout our meal, but gave us enough space where we didn't feel suffocated. Service was perfect. As for the food, my boyfriend ordered a half dozen oysters (they were HUGE) and he really enjoyed them. I ordered the New England clam chowder and, to be honest, I hated it. It was probably the worst I've ever sampled. Large chunks of barely cooked bacon, the clams had a bit of sand in them, and the broth (because it was not think nor chowder like) was watered down and pretty bland. Even the oyster crackers, which I love, couldn't save this soup. We also opted to split the basket with mixed fried seafood. Shrimp, cod filets, clam strips, bay scallops, fries, and BBQ coleslaw. Huge portion. We ordered the dinner size, assuming it would be more appropriate to split, but I'm sure we didn't have to. We barely finished it! The bay scallops were my favorite part of the basket, sweet and perfectly cooked. Price was also on point. Lunch for 2 was $35. For all the seafood we got, it was a great value. I'd probably stop by again if in the area, I just know not to order the soup, ahem, chowder, again. read more
