The black bean burger is the worst black bean burger i have ever had. The taste was ok but the burger is mushy.

Good burgers and a good casual dine in ambiance. We always are happy to bring friends in for a meal here or order it to go for a Friday night dinner at home. This was our first visit and we were excited to try as we love burgers. 2 burgers, 1 order of fries, 1 order of tots and 2 fountain drinks came to $50. We found the burgers to be unseasoned and very thick. It was like a large meatball in a bun, so if you prefer a very thick burger, then you won't mind. The toppings made the buns, though the brioche bun is tasty, turn to mush if you set them down, as the paper on the tray was dripping wet from the toppings being wet and their dressing (we both experienced this despite having different ingredients on our burgers). One of us had to finish using a fork and knife as the bun disintegrated. The tots and fries were fine. Due to the price, along with the burger becoming wet and challenging to eat, it will be our first and only visit. There are many great, gourmet burger places that cost less and in our opinion, have better seasoned burgers that don't become soggy and are too tall to get in your mouth. As a note for anyone who does wish to try them out, we suggest trying to find parking on Grand vs. the parking lot in the back. read more

I had a bunch of questions about their beer selection, and they were more than happy to answer. Free beer tasters will keep me coming back for more ;) Great interior design, great ambience! I got the Diablo burger as it comes and it was the best burger I have ever had. My only regret is not taking a picture before I devoured it. My husband also ordered the 3 pack of sliders and you can mix and match so he ordered a smokehouse, western and the chorizo. We also ordered the truffle tots and corn dogs. Chorizo diablo burger is one of the more unique burgers that I've had and it just works. Mix that with an oreo milkshake and fries and you're in a food coma of pure bliss. Yelp lead me here after a nice hike in Elfin Park.. I am not familiar with Escondido so I was relying on this high yelp rating. On Labor Day weekend the line was long and slow.. it was about 20 minutes to simply order. You order at the counter, grab a number, and wait for your food to be served. I had the classic which was essentially a fancy in n out burger -- the bench sauce is very similar to animal style sauce. It was very good.. but I found the bun to be a bit stale and crumbly. My boyfriend had the sunrise burger and it was tiny!! Literally only half the bun was occupied by the patty. I think it was just a mistake in the kitchen because other sunrise burgers around us looked much bigger. We shared tots and they hit the spot. Burgers are moderately priced starting at $7.50.. the sunrise burger was nearly $10. Burgers do not come with sides.. you must buy a la carte. The Oreo shake we had for dessert was great! Very filling.. and thick.. use the spoon! Would come here again if in the area.. but wouldn't necessarily travel out of my way for these burgers. read more

I came here after a long hike nearby. The space looks great, lots of exposed brick and wood. The lone though...oh man, I stood there for 15 minutes before I even got to place my order! Granted it was about 12:30, and a Sunday...but that line moved quite slow...and it didn't seem thaaattt busy, just slow order taking. I ordered the sunrise burger, which was tasty, albiet a little small. Also, about a quarter of the patty was just missing...like a chunk had fallen off and not been replaced. For $9.50 it's a little disappointing to see that. The bun and ingredients were tasty, just missing the whole patty! The shakes here are quite good as well, I split an Oreo shake, and it's a fantastic blend of ice cream and milk. Finally the servers were great and really helpful! read more

We love this place, and go there at least twice a week! Their gluten-free buns are great, and we usually have classic burger with a turkey patty, but all their burgers are superb! When we want to spoil ourselves, we have one of their selection of shakes, which are large, and very rich! The onion rings are killer! read more

They have many burgers to choose from as well as slider so that you can try up to three of their creations. I also liked they have fries and tater tots to choose from. The soda fountain has naturally flavored soda with interesting combinations such as pineapple cream and black cherry with tarragon. I wasn't a fan of having to bus your own table though. Any place can make burger patties medium rare and a perfect running egg , deserves at least 4 stars. My Pick was "Sunrise burger" since it has all the ingredients I like: thick smoked bacon, sunny side up egg, crunchy tots, cheddar cheese, Bench sauce and It's a good bet for the first timer. On my 2nd visit within a week, I decided to order the same burger except I did some modification. I asked for medium rare, very light on the sauce and no seasoning on fries. (somehow it's too salty for me last time) and it turned out almost perfect as I like it. Even without seasoning, their fries already had enough flavor to it so with seasoning it would be too salty for me. We found this place driving around town. The burgers are insane! A lady next to me had a veggie burger and said it was the best she's ever had. Great beers on tap and the staff was so great. We went there 3 times in a few weeks. If you're looking for a $5 to go burger, this is not the place. Ava the woman at the register was super rude. Like she seemed super annoyed for no reason. She seemed bothered when we ordered and then practically threw the straw at my table when we asked for a coffee THEY forgot to serve us. The food is okay. Had the chorizo burrito and honestly lacked A LOT of flavor. Strawberry lemonade was pretty good but overall wouldn't come back. Ava forgot our coffee (again it's okay I know it happens) however when she brought it she threw the straw and put the coffee down and just walked away. I don't expect people to super nice but also don't expect someone to look at me like if I'm an issue while ordering something simple or throw something especially if you bring family. July 4, 2018 Had Apple Pie in Julian - figured, what's more American than to top that off with a burger at Burger Bench. So, that's how my friends and I ended up in Escondido, on Independence Day. I ordered the following: Sliders (Smokehouse, Swiss Mushroom and the Golden Rooster) along with a Half and Half (Truffle Parmesan fries and tots). I appreciate being able to choose which slider you want to be able to sample different items. Unlike a burger - you order it, you're stuck with it. Could go both ways too though. I could have loved one slider and only had that one. Anyway, I enjoyed the sliders; they were juicy and the ingredient combination complimented each other. I say this because some places seem to be over the top in their attempt to wow you. The truffle was a little strong for my taste but I liked them enough to finish them off. It's not table service; order and find a seat. Food will be brought to you. However, I have to say, service was pretty friendly and the team seemed to work well together in keeping the establishment stocked (condiments) and clean (dining area - both indoor and out). I'm a fan of Burger Bench and I'll be back to try the other flavors on the menu. Might even have an adult beverage this time. Decent looking selection. read more

Checked out this place for the first time the other day. It had a steady crowd the whole time we were there. They do have a host to seat you, however you have to go up to order your food. I really liked how they offered a slider trio so I could taste different types! One thing I think can be improved upon is the buns on the sliders. The buns were pretty hard and chewy. The buns on the regular burgers were soft and delicious! We all enjoyed our food and would come back again! The tots and onion rings were nice and crispy!! My favorite slider in my trio was the crispy chicken sandwich! The burger with fig jam was yummy, however I would not want a full sized burger as it is too sweet. read more

I had the slider package with the fried chicken burger, smokehouse and fig jam burger. The fried chicken was well cooked and tasty but the raw apple slice didn't do anything flavor or texture wise. I was hoping for a little more seasoning but I only had the slider so maybe the full size is better. The smokehouse was the best slider of the three and I would order it full size next time for sure. The tots were really good The onion rings and Bench sauce is 5 stars!!!! We had several different milkshakes and found them all very very good. Hostess are brain dead. Get rid of your hostess staff asap. They'll let little kids wait in the rain to let douches walk in sit in singles table just to take a whole table. And they I don't know. As I reviewed the restaurants on Grand Ave, I was struck by the number of 4+ star reviews. But what set the Burger Bench apart was the sheer volume of raving fans. I mean, can 1,689 reviewers with 1,589 photo posts be wrong? The counter service was friendly and prompt. I was happy to see $25 per person for a stacked burger, a beer, and a half-serving of sweet potato fries. The meal arrived within 10 minutes. There was a generous spread of garlic aioli on the buttered buns. There were two strips of bacon on a glistening patty. It was fat on fat on fat and not much flavor. The aftermath was not so pretty. My stomach decided to vomit it out around 2 am. Needless to say, I won't be going back. I've become suspicious of star inflation on Yelp. Just about every eatery in Escondido has a minimum of 4 stars. That's outrageous. I've eaten at some of these places, and a lot of them deserve no more than 2 and neither did this one. read more

Let me start off by saying the staff here are wonderful people! I've been here once before, and it was delicious (sunrise burger). tonight I decided to branch out and try something full of ingredients that I enjoy, but that I hadn't tried before. I got the Chorizo Diablo burger medium well with no jalepenos. When I began eating I noticed there were jalepenos, and it was medium/medium rare. It also had a lot of different flavors all at once that I found it harder to enjoy and ditched half the burger. I did also get a banana Oreo shake which was delicious, and their crunchy tater tots. My husband was craving for some burger and we found this place on Yelp with a lot of good review so we decided to try here. YES! this place has great food. We were happy and satisfied with our food. I got the Swiss mushroom but they ran out of mushroom that day. The burger still taste very good without the mushroom. The meat is still moist (I got the well done meat). Good flavored and creative burgers here! I was so excited when I saw the 3 sliders option - sampler size of their burger menu so I can try more without stuffing my face is such a great idea! I tried their chicken sandwich, mushroom slider and the smokehouse slider. All of them had amazing and unique flavors. My favorite was the chicken sandwich - it was tender and crispy and went well with the sauce. However the beef was a bit over cooked and dry, maybe because it was a smaller party, but I tried my husband's full size burger, it was not much moister.
