Wait staff was wonderfully attentive and polite. Only one hiccup - missing bacon- was very swiftly corrected. Cream of crab soup was thick and loaded with plenty of Chesapeake Bay Blue crab meat. (I would have enjoyed a traditional squirt of sherry to enhance flavor...but not here. Still delicious.) Other entrees and dudes were served promptly and done just right. Hinkle's Restaurant is an old-fashioned soda fountain and restaurant. Their menu has a little bit of everything - and so many classics: burgers and hot dogs, haddock, crab cakes, a fried oyster platter, liver and onions, sandwiches and wraps, salads, pierogis, all-day breakfast, and more. When I arrived this past Saturday for lunch, I asked for a seat the bar/counter, since I was enjoying a solo meal. The service at the counter was great - friendly, fast, helpful. I ordered the Old Fashioned Shifter ("a favorite of Pennsylvania Railroad workers; the Shifter is ham and cheese, lettuce, tomato, sweet pickle, and mayo"), fries, and a Lime Rickey. The sandwich was great - simple and delicious. The Lime Rickey wasn't my favorite - I thought it was just a bit too artificial-tasting and syrup-y (some fresh lime juice would've made a big difference). But overall, I enjoyed my meal! The restaurant itself has a lot of charm. You can see the history in the space, but its recent renovation also means that it's a very comfortable restaurant - historic but modern in the ways you want a restaurant to be, too. I enjoyed my meal here. I'd happily return!

Then she said, "you know who does great tuna salad? It's a diner over in Columbia!" But she couldn't remember right there what it was called. I googled diners in Columbia and I read back to her she shouted , "Black Olive"!!!! I'm here with two friends but didn't order tuna as it's breakfast and so I ordered eggs Benedict with turkey sausage instead of the Canadian bacon, and lemon on the side since I love my hollandaise sauce tangy. I get my order but not as I requested. Canadian bacon is in there and turkey sausage on a side plate. The hollandaise sauce looks like melted cheddar and no lemon on the side. Worst of all I cut into the poached eggs and they're too hard. Well I was just too disappointed in their skill level to ask them to redo. Our amazing waitress was trying to talk me into ordering something else if I didn't want a redo. She had a manager come by and I told him what I ordered and how I got it. It was ok I didn't want to trouble anyone. He insisted they'd get it right so I gave in. A few minutes later he presents me with jiggly poached eggs on top of turkey sausage and wedges of lemon. I will say I was impressed the second time around, though the hollandaise sauce needs work! Here's a quick blender recipe Ingredients: 3 egg yolks, 1 tbsp lemon juice, pinch salt, 1/2 cup hot melted butter. No need to make it from powder. You "can" taste the difference! Over all very happy with the cleanliness, service, attention and will be back mid March for that tuna sandwich. Mmm can't wait!

Food: I got the Olive burger platter. Burger (bacon, cheese, LTO, house sauce served with coleslaw, large portion of fries and a cup of soup). Everything was good (sides and burger bun/ toppings). Unfortunately where it disappointed was the burger itself. Although it was angus ....the preformed patty with dried up edges , vaguely freezer burned taste and ordered medium was served very well done. So unfortunately the star of the show itself... the burger... is not recommended.

Still two steps over there. So in fact, there is no handicap access for someone in a wheelchair. Fortunately, I am able to use a cane and was able to ascend a few stairs to the interior. Inside is a small restaurant with a counter for ordering and a handful of tables for seating if eating there. We stood at the order counter several minutes before anyone acknowledged our presence. In their defense, they were busy filling orders, placing to go orders on their warming area, and continuing to cook. Finally, the "cook" looked over & said, "I apologize for the wait, we'll will be with you in a minute." The young person who finally took our order seemed a bit inexperienced, but we weren't in much of a rush. Nevertheless, there still were several slip ups in our order. My wife ordered a BLT. When they asked if she wanted it on white or wheat, she said, "white, please, toasted and no onion." What she didn't realize (my wife) was that white or wheat meant a brioche style hamburger bun not traditional sliced bread. That was not clear until we asked after being served -- and were told they don't use "regular bread". Second hiccup in this order was that while the sandwich had a wonderful abundance of bacon... I mean a load!... Somehow they not only left off the onion but also was no tomato! It ended up being a bacon, lettuce and mayo sandwich on a bun. So back to the counter to ask them for several slices of tomato. (Apology accepted.) My order was for a Philly-style cheesesteak with Cooper cheese. It came very hot, juicy, and quite yummy. In fact, it was too big for me to finish. So once again, the general generosity with fillings and toppings was top-notch. Prices were very reasonable and I would encourage you to go and try it. If in the area, we likely will come back as well. As a side note, my wife worked as a server at this restaurant 68 years ago when she was a teenager! Different name back then for both the restaurant and for her. Fond memories.

The ambiance of the cafe is perfect, large windows allow light to pour into the bright space, exposed brick and the high ceilings give it a turn of the century industrial feel, and the inviting seating area by the front windows makes you want to curl up with a cup of coffee and just watch the world go by. We ordered two hot drinks and three entrees. The drinks were a Red Eye coffee with a splash of cream and a Dirty Chai, as well as some of the hard stuff, aka milk for the baby. Now the food, I literally could have eaten four helpings of everything. I'm still kicking myself for not ordering something to go. My husband ordered the Cajun Omelet with breakfast potatoes, if you order nothing else, get the breakfast potatoes, as they are as near to crispy potato perfection as you can get. The youngest member of the party had a Belgian Waffle, and I had a Fried Green Tomato sandwich on a homemade biscuit. I literally licked my fingers because I did not want to waste a crumb. The ONLY disappointing thing about the cafe is that we did not stumble onto it sooner. I look forward to making this eatery a frequent go to for morning, midday or evening bites. PS - if nothing else, the pay it forward board will give you all the feels when you stop in.
