I've visited this place a few times while staying near Hampton University but this visit is the best. I stopped by for Happy Hour and was able up chop it up w bartender (Serena). I had a craving for GOOD chicken fingers - and while I wouldn't have thought a place called Burger Theory would deliver, they are really quite good. Clearly have a buttermilk soak of some kind and great seasoning. Filled my craving and I wanted more. They also reheated well in the oven, so I was able to use leftovers to make chicken and waffles for Sunday brunch. On the not so lovely - both the honey mustard and the BBQ sauce that came with them were HORRIBLE. It was like taking a masterfully cooked filet and slathering ketchup on it instead of a nice mushroom or butter sauce. I also picked up the sweet potato fries, and although the portion was huge, they were all just mush - not crispy on the outside at all. Bleck. Let's do a review!!! It's been a while since my last visit to Burger Theory, so while in the area and having a taste for a burger, I thought I would give them a visit. Now again, Burger Theory is inside the Omini or Holiday Inn (I can't recall which) Hotel in Newport News. The place has a serious chill vibe to it. It's a sports bar / casual dining and okay for the kids. There's a full bar, plenty of TVs with live sporting events on, plenty of seating indoors, and nice patio seating. It was a little on the chilly side, so you may want to have a light jacket ready. The menu includes hamburger glory (hence the name), appetizers, and some serious drinks. Table service, clean bathrooms ( which is a good indicator of how the kitchen may look), and the decor scream hotel dining. I noticed a steak option on the menu; thinking outside the box, I got that instead - I found out it was not a big seller, but I went with it anyway. The steak was not the best; it made me sick, but Our excellent waitress, Kelly, took it back and let me order something else. In the end, she took off 20% of the price. So they aim to please the customer. The wife had a traditional Breakfast Burger highlighting the breakfast theme--fresh sweet potato fries and onion rings are available, and dill pickle comes with every platter. Please read what's on the burgers; there may be something you don't like or have questions about- they will gladly serve it on the side, eliminate it, or give you extra if you like. Now, they have a variety of chef-crafted burgers, or you can build your own. Burgers are made with ground beef, brisket, or steak cut as a choice. The build-your-own burger option has plenty of options, and I recommend this. Side options are French fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings slaw, and grilled veggies - all served fresh and hot. They reserve the salt, but plenty of condiments are at your table. I didn't notice if they have vegan options, for I am a meat and potatoes man. Ultimately, we paid $54 without a tip, so I added $20 for our exceptional waitress, Kelly, and their overall customer service. There is a full bar and spacious seating, and it is just a great place to watch a sporting event. My numbers are service 10/10, food 8/10, cleanliness 7/10, and 10/10 for the sports bar vibe. This restaurant is attached to the hotel. We went on a Monday and it was open but empty. No customers and we waited 5 mins and no staff appeared until we were walking out. Even then we weren't acknowledged so we continued walking out. The restaurant was clean. Wish we could've tried the food. read more

To be honest I was in this place in the morning for the hotel breakfast. However I am stunned how a restaurant with a kitchen can serve such a bad breakfast. Eggs were those typical eggs already prepared and heated. The waffle was sour with a very weird taste. I ended up only drinking the coffee. What a hidden gem! We had a perfect experience! This was our first time, and we will definitely go back. We were immediately greeted once we found a table and sat down. Our server, Cecibel, was amazing. She was super friendly, very attentive - we didn't have to ask for any refills and she kept checking back to see if we needed anything. Our food came out within 15 minutes and was piping hot. I got the Lonestar burger which had an onion ring, barbecue sauce (which was delicious!) and crispy bacon. It was so good! The french fries were top-notch. The seasoning was a combination of Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt, Lawry seasoning, salt and pepper, and I think a splash of oregano (not sure). They were cooked perfectly, and the appearance of the food was great. They offer high tops, tables, booths, and outdoor seating. They even have one table that could sit about 10 people. I've been wanting to go here for a long time, but was hesitant because I knew it had a bar atmosphere. When we went, it wasn't crowded at all, and it pleasantly surprised me. There is a lot of seating. They also offer other things such as chicken or fish sandwiches, tacos, and salads among other things. Tuesday night is taco night, and they offered tacos for only $2 or $3. Definitely try this place out! It's located in a really nice hotel, so not a place you would typically go for a meal. The hubs knows I love burgers. So when he drove to the holiday inn and parked, I thought we were having some staycation. It ends up that Burger theory is located on the first floor of the Holiday Inn. We actually got there when the restaurant just opened. There was nobody inside except a few employees. We took a seat at the bar and the bartender handed us both menus. The cheesadilla was our starter. It was described "as a quesadilla meets cheeseburger." There was a mix of green chili, lettuce, tomato, and onion. I was pretty excited to try a burger in a different form. However, the amount of grease dripping from the meat was a lot. It looked like the cook never drained the meat thoroughly and kept it as is. We both ate it as we do not like to waste food. I had one and pushed the rest to the hubs. This cheesadilla created indigestion after our meal. We also ordered burgers. I had the single BT Boss which was described as a 1/2 burger stuffed with bacon topped with onion, sharp cheddar, swiss cheese, lettuce, and KGB sauce. I opted for the sweet potato fries for an extra charge. There were options to make the burger with a single or double patty for additional cost. The hubs had the Philly burger which was topped with grilled peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, and KGB sauce. I enjoyed that my BT Boss burger was cooked medium rare. The bacon was cut in very small pieces and mixed into the meat. I actually wanted to switch up on the cheese to blue cheese, but it looked like that request was ignored. It was almost a wet burger and falling apart towards the end. The sweet potato fries were awesome. It was fresh, crispy and very delicious. The Philly burger was also ok with limp, lukewarm seasoned fries. The cheesadilla I believe set the tone and the indigestion was hard to ignore. Well this is my second review of Burger Theory in 2 months. Last time I wrote to give this place a chance so it wouldn't close down. I don't know how it stays in business I was one of 5 people during lunch. Here is how it went. We got there it took 15 minutes before we were waited on to get our drinks, then we didn't get the correct drink, had to ask several times to get lemons for our SWEET Tea. Even with no one there it took awhile to get our food once we had ordered it. The burgers were very tasty and we got plenty of fries. It is a little pricey for burgers, but they do taste good. Don't be in a hurry if you go there, it's a good place to talk and take your time since it's quiet and not crowded. With 2 visits and probably my last it's hit or miss. I wish this place nothing but the best but unless things change I don't see it making it. read more

I visited Burger Theory on a Friday at 12:30 PM with a group of five. To my surprise, it wasn't busy at all, which made for a relaxed and comfortable dining experience. Unfortunately, I have to downgrade my previous ratings. I love the food here and the service is okay. My favorite is the Lonestar burger and we always get fries and onion rings because they are both so good. The side salad is good too. The reason for three stars is the smell. It's been there the last two visits. First they were mopping the floor and it just stunk so bad. Then when we went last week, it was throughout the whole restaurant about 630 and they probably don't mop at that time of day. My husband said it smelled like they weren't rinsing the mop or the bucket or both but it was really so strong, it was hard to eat our meal. I almost called a manager over to address it but my son pleased with me not to make a big deal. When you go to the hotel lobby area just outside the restaurant, it's fresh clean air so the issue is definitely the restaurant. It's such a shame because it's been our go to burger place and now I'm hesitant to go back. I think we'll just be prepared with a back up plan so that if it smells when go in, we just leave. You can get delivery through door dash but it's not as good when it's not hot from the kitchen. Maybe get takeout or hopefully they address it soon. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for like two years now bc I always pass it when going to hampton/ Newport News/ Williamsburg. I finally got my chance and the food did not disappoint. I don't usually eat a lot of meat or dairy but I got a single burger with veggies and coleslaw. The coleslaw tasted fresh and homemade. My boyfriend and his son got burgers with fries. We were licking the pastes clean! Our server was friendly and accommodating. I wish I could remember her name. I think next time we'll try a beer or two on draft. The atmosphere was nice. WHY is this place empty at lunchtime on a Thursday afternoon?!! All the people working in the surrounding office parks need to be crowding in here. Please, oh please, tell me they are not hitting up the fast food joints? Beautifully decorated and clean, we were of course seated immediately by the bartender (?) Amethyst. Drinks came fast and our order was placed. The burger menu is extensive, especially with the build your own option - something like 4300 combinations! They do also have salads and a few non burger items on the menu. I went with a bacon cheddar burger with a side salad ($1 upcharge for both the salad and bacon). The kid had a plain cheeseburger (American) and fries. Our food came out fast. My salad had a yummy blue cheese dressing (with sufficient chunks of blue cheese) and it was super fresh. My burger was cooked to a perfect mid-rare and the kid's was the perfect medium. Both burgers were big (we each got the single option and couldn't completely finish - can't imagine getting a double!) and juicy. Perfection! The fries have a light season (looks like maybe garlic?) but it is subtle and not over powering. They were cooked perfectly as well. This will definitely be our go to burger joint when we are on this side of the water in the future! A word about the entrance, yes it is inside the Holiday Inn, but not too difficult to find. When you turn in the driveway, you are facing their outdoor patio area. Bare to the right to park and the entrance is the lower one instead of the main lobby. read more

Shocking bad service! Rarely do I write a bad review about any business, but I had to take action because we've visited this establishment 5-10 times and our most recent visit was appallingly bad. To the point the point where we will no longer stay the Holiday Inn or visit Burger Theory Summary - Visited on a Friday night at 7:30pm. Place was empty but there were at least 7 servers / bartenders working so there was not a staffing shortage. The service was unbelievably slow. Without getting into too many details, it took use 2.5 hours to complete our very simple meal of burgers and drinks. Manager was aware of the service issues and showed zero accountability and zero empathy. Expected some type of apology but an attitude instead. They even hit up with an 18% service fee because of our group size. It was stunningly bad service and a horrible dining experience for someone that dines out frequently and is a very patient, flexible, and understanding patron. I came in to a burger joint to review the burgers at yet another restaurant. However,it was already a mess so we went here instead. I was not disappointed. We started with rating the atmosphere. It was definitely giving a calmer vibe to chill out, eat solid food and relax. The booths were not like typical booths where it's stiff with hard cushions. They were soft and super comfortable I could bounce on them. The waitress was super nice and attentive. They were all amazing and kind. She even asked if we had room for dessert. The food was definitely delicious. The wings were almost the size of my palm and were fresh with a side of freshly washed carrots. The burgers were absolutely reasonable for the price. As a former business traveler, I have a healthy skepticism for hotel bars. Usually they are made up of disappointment and unfulfilled meal potential when you have no other options nearby. Burger Theory, thankfully, breaks the mold. If I was comparing these burgers against similar hotel restaurants (In Marriott, Hilton, etc) this blows them away. The burgers are not only juicy and flavorful, but actually seasoned. I had the Breakfast Burger and couldn't finish the whole thing. The best part? Crispy bacon that was actually crispy, not the lackluster and limp bacon you so often get. The egg was the perfect decadent addition, just delicious. Husband had the BT Burger, which is stuffed with swiss, cheddar, bacon and grilled onions. A mouthful, but also delicious. We stopped in for happy hour after checking into the Holiday Inn. For 10 minutes there were no staff visible at all. When one finally showed, she came to our table and said "i won't be helping you" (turned out she was the bartender), but she did take our drink order. Eventually a server came. We eventually got appetizers that tasted ok. Overall sad, unpleasant vibe there. We made the mistake of returning for breakfast the next morning, as we had chosen a hotel rate that included it. The restaurant smelled a bit like old garbage and cheap disinfectant. Tables were dirty. (Clean napkins on top of sticky table tops). Buffet breakfast was so bad. Cold dense scrambled "eggs", hash browns floating in an inch of water, very stale bread for toast. Server brought us each one cup of coffee and never came over again. We both liked our burgers but his was falling apart almost instantly so he basically inhaled it before it could fall to pieces and mine was good but just a lot more greasy that I usually like them. The fries were also good and the portion sizes were pretty decent. We were both able to finish everything but left completely stuffed. Service was quick and good and we left full and happy from Burger Theory. I really liked the decor and wished it was warmer so we could have sat outside by the fire pit! Buffalo wings comes with 6 wings and was crispy and tasty! Breakfast burger had a sunny side egg and was well liked. Classic burger was solid as well. What I appreciated is that the requested cooking of the burger actually matched what you get! My medium burger was perfectly medium. Fish sandwich was a bit over breaded but had a lot of cod to the patty, so that was surprising! Each meal comes with a pickle spear and your choice of fries or tator tots. The fries/tots are MORE than enough - no one finished theirs. While both are tasty, I'd go with the fries. Perfectly crispy but still have the soft potato insides. Everyone needs to wake up and go to Burger Theory now. They have over 12 televisions so great for sports events, service was great, excellent ambiance and the food was amazing. It's located in the new Holiday Inn in City Center and it is now a beautiful hotel and restaurant. I had the cheesadilla which was a cheeseburger quesadilla and while a little greasy it was tasty and great! My wife had the BT Boss (well I took half of it) and it was like a juicy Lucy filled with cheese, bacon and onions in a 1/2 pound patty, it was delicious. My kids both had double bacon cheeseburgers and they put every other local burger place to shame with the fresh, soft and burger grilled bun. The burger was seasoned well with perfectly juicy. The bacon was crisp.....just a great burger. The fries were hand cut and good. This will become my new go to spot for watching the game, getting a burger and I have heard the wings are good, I will be those next. We had a great time here for lunch. Service was amazing, food was really good, and being able to sit out in the fresh air and sunshine to enjoy it was..... (wait for it.....) .....priceless. Seriously though, when we got there, only two other customers were in evidence and they looked like they were doing an interview of some kind. The only other staff person was the bartender and this could have been either a good thing or a terrible one depending on the attitude of the staff. I heard a few good things about Burger theory and decided to take my family there one day after work. I remember this area as the old Omni Hotel. I was told that the holiday inn express came in and remodeled the entire building and put in a burger joint on the bottom floor where a club used to be. I looked online and saw a few reviews and knew that we had to eat here one day. This place really looks good. It is off in the cut with the hotel and without any hoopla, I'm not sure people will find it. My family of 4 sat down and we all ordered burgers. My twin boys loved their food and my wife and I were more than pleased with our medium burgers. We always order our burgers medium when we go out. You'd be surprised at how many restaurants can't stick the landing on preparing a medium burger. Burger theory hit the spot. I ordered the BT boss. This burger was jammed with bacon and cheddar cheese on it and it was delicious. How can you not love a burger that is loaded with bacon? We also had a side of fries and their onion rings. They were both delicious. Oh, I forgot to mention that we got an order of firecracker shrimp. You can not go wrong with the shrimp.
