A few years ago I had a chance to experience the tea leaf salad at a street festival in Portland. Fast forward a few years later and we were looking for a not so run of the mill place for my hubby's birthday. We found on @burma_o_clock on @yelp and made our way over. We came for a late lunch/ early dinner so everyone was rather hungry. We ordered the tea leaf salad, the Garlic Noodle, Shwe Taung Khow Suey (Burmese Noodles), Chicken Noodle( Nan Gyi Thoke) and the Pickled Mango Pork curry - which I forgot to get a picture of! Overall really good experience, service was friendly and welcoming. I recommend the Green tea leaf salad especially if you're used to papaya salad. It gave the same vibes but not spicy - I'm sure you could ask to add spice. I enjoyed the coconut noodles, it was really light. I also liked the pickled mango pork, I asked for mine to be spicy. I met my friends here for an early lunch on Saturday. They suggested Burma o'clock and I was really excited to try Burmese food. We sat at a table by the window and started with some tea. What we shared (3 people): + Burmese Fritters + Tea Leaf Salad + Burmese Mashed Potatoes + Burmese Chicken Curry with paratha + Shan Noodle with chicken The food was made to order and the ingredients were very fresh. Their iced water had the taste of fresh lemon, a little detail I really enjoyed. For the Burmese fritters, the most interesting items to me were the watercress and their housemade tofu. I've never had watercress that was breaded and fried before! Their tofu (I recall) contained chickpeas in it, and was really delicate and gently fried in the batter. The ingredient:batter ratio was perfect. They even had corn fritters. This was a fun appetizer to share with a group. The tea leaf salad was so unique and the flavors were very subtle. If you like a spicy thai papaya salad, this dish is like its milder, tamer cousin; it has a great texture with the crunch of the seeds/peanuts. My favorite was the Burmese chicken curry served with a side of paratha. The sauce was very flavorful and the chicken was tender. The flavors really highlight the quality and freshness of the ingredients. Nothing was overly spicy or sour or tangy; the food was harmonious. Service was a little slower during the lunch rush with only one server, but it was not a big deal. Burma o'clock is a lovely, cozy restaurant serving very fresh dishes and the service was kind and welcoming. Stopped by for dinner before heading to a show at the McAninch Arts Center at COD. Service was perfect, our water have us some suggestions. One was totally not in our radar but was our favorite dish of the evening! We had the tea leaf salad, chicken noodle salad, and the standout pickled mango curry. The salads were decent, and we would definitely come back for the pickled mango curry which didn't taste pickled or mango-y but was just absolute deliciousness. There is street parking in the area, had to park off the main street as it was a busy Friday evening. We came here on a Wednesday night. It wasn't busy, and the restaurant had plenty of tables. The place is clean and nicely decorated. We ordered the fried tofu, Burmese mashed potatoes, Shan noodles with chicken, and fish chowder soup. The fried tofu was something different. They made it with chickpea flour. The mashed potatoes are like mashed potatoes with hot chili oil on it. The fish chowder soup was good. The soup was super tasty with the noodles. The shan noodles were chewy with a lighter taste if you add the soup to them. If you eat it dry with the sauce, it has a stronger taste. Service was good. We came here after Bonita Bowls. You can find free street parking at night in front of the restaurant as well as the parking garage across the street. I like this place more than Pa Lian because the hours are a lot better. 9 pm is the sweet spot for almost everyday. There were plenty of seating, there were only two other tables besides us. However, I did like how crispy the outside texture was. -Burmese mashed potatoes 4 - the mashed potatoes taste good when you add some of the chili oil to it. Without the chili oil, it's not bad. -shan noodle with chicken 5 - this is the star of the show. There's a cup of broth that you get with it. You can eat the noodles without the broth. The tomato flavor is more bold, but if you add the broth in the noodles the flavor is more even. You can do it with or without. I added the broth in. I liked how chewy the noodles were. There was a good amount of minced chicken and the ground peanuts added more texture. -fish chowder soup 5 - the broth is more subtle than the shan noodle. You have different toppings to add in. We placed a to-go order on a Saturday night and the process was quick and easy. Our order included Samosas, Tea Leaf Salad, Chicken Pad Thai, and Beef Pad Kra Pao. I tried to get Mango Sticky Rice, but they were out, so I went for the Banana Cake -- which was also unavailable. Our food was ready in about 25 minutes and arrived piping hot, which I really appreciated. The Pad Thai was tasty, but I didn't realize it would come without egg or cilantro, which are my favorite parts of the dish, so I'll customize it next time. Made the almost hour-long drive with my family to try this place because there aren't too many Burmese restaurants and it's part of our background. Samosas: really delicate and packed with potatoes. Didn't feel greasy. Tea leaf salad: not really my jam, but interesting and diverse salty flavors. My parents said there weren't many tea leaves My dad spoke Burmese with our server and got a special order of this fried squash which was really interesting. Chicken noodles. Not as good as my aunt makes and not too much coconut flavor, but it was still really good. Very nice flavors on the chicken, and the soup(sauce) was yummy. Also really nice presentation. Moh hinga fish soup: my parents said they would've wanted more fish flavor. But I can understand if they lessened that flavor to make it more palatable for the average customer. I love Burmese food so I was excited to try Burma O' Clock. We came on a Saturday afternoon and there were maybe 1-2 other tables occupied. The restaurant was freezing. There was probably only one person in the kitchen and one person waiting tables because service was painfully slow. I had the coconut noodle soup (egg noodles with chicken curry in a creamy coconut broth topped with crispy noodles, hard boiled egg, and scallion). The noodle soup was just okay but I thought it could have been more flavorful. The crispy noodles pretty much dissolved right away so it would have been better if they were on the side. I also didn't think there was a whole lot of chicken. Overall, service was slow and food was mediocre for higher than expected prices. read more

First time trying Burmese food and there couldn't have been a better place to have it. Food: Shan Noodle was delicious, had a really great sweet savory flavor, it was fresh and perfectly cooked and the sides paired really well (very clean chicken broth and nice pickled mustard greens). Also had the Burmese fried tofu, which they explained was unique because it was made from chickpeas. Really delicious with the side sauce. Interior: Extremely clean, great ambience and environment. Feels like a nicer restaurant while having affordable prices. Staff: The best. The waiter was extremely kind and helpful in introducing Burmese food, he was attentive and made the experience a delight. The owner was very friendly - she's from Burma and is also the chef, and you could tell she's very passionate about sharing her culture through food. Being born in Rangoon (Yangon), immigrating to Chicago at the age of 2, and becoming an American citizen at the age of 7, I find myself a long way from home culturally. My childhood memories of Burmese traditions and foods all revolve fondly around my mom's cooking, my dad's work ethics, and my family's tight bond. My ability to hang on to my Burmese culture and language was all dependant upon the home and family unit. As I have gotten older through the years I find holding on to the culture, food, and language challenging... There's not a lot of culturally authentic Burmese restaurants in the Chicagoland area. I visited Burma O'Clock along with my sisters and my 92 year old Dad for lunch today. My first pleasant surprise was that the owner spoke fluent Burmese that I was able to understand. It has been a long time since I was able to converse in Burmese with someone outside the family, and it was a wonderful experience!. I consider myself a bit of a Foodie as I believe food is one of the best ways to appreciate cultures and bring people together. As we looked at the menu and talked with the owner she brought back so many fond memories of my culture with authentic and classic Burmese dishes and desserts that only hardcore afficionados are aware of. The food was soooo good and authentic that it reminded me of my mom and almost brought me to tears, as my childhood was about watching my mom cook complex layered flavored Burmese dishes through several different courses with her secret recipes. Burma O'Clock is the real deal. They cater to your taste but if you want to really try authentic Burmese tell them not to hold back on the flavor! The ingredients are wholesome, natural, and downright delicious. You'll get home cooking here at Michelin star taste and quality! For appetizers the tea and/or ginger salad is a must! Their Burmese fritters are super fresh and crunchy. For entrees the Shwe Taung Khow Suey (Burmese noodles) has amazing and complex flavors. All their noodle dishes are on point and perfectly cooked so that the noodles are firm and bouncy - absolutely delicious! Their Moh Hinga (fish chowder) is so tasty that you can tell the chowder and broth had been simmered all day to develop a rich bold flavor. Their coconut noodle soup is also a famous comfort food that has tons of layers of flavors that are skillfully cooked and unravels on your taste buds. The Beef Curry with coconut white rice is an all-time favorite for sure! For dessert you must try the Falooda! A complex sweet serving of milk, ice cream, pudding, rose water and the works!
