As a Harvard alum I am keenly aware of an interesting dish known as the South Shore Bar Pizza. Unique to Boston, the SSBP is a staple in drinking establishments around Boston, probaly designed to keep bar patrons anchored to their stool. The SSBP is the original Personal Pizza (sorry Pizza Hut!) that is a 10" pie with a thin, buttery crust that is sauced and topped to the edges which results in a carmelizied ring of burnt goodness. Here in Waltham, there is a new entry into the category: Burnt Edges. Located in the local Moose Lodge, Burnt Edges differentiates on its very unique product mix that features a range of sauces including Bacon Cheddar, Mango Habenero, Garlic, EVO, Buttermilk Ranch, Duffalo, Big Mac, Taco, Pterodactyl (!!??), and even Tomato. We usually try to order different entrees but we were both intrigued by the "Angry Sicilian" which is topped with hot capicola, pepperoni, prosciutto and a black garlic and whipped ricotta swirl. It is finished with a drizzle of hot honey that adds a unique twist to an already fabulous pizza. The pie is the perfect size and generously topped to the edges which results in a magnificent corona of burnt goodness. We have to stress that the white dots of black garlic and whipped ricotta is an incredible topping - a great counter punch to the spicy meats. Burnt Edges is a separate business located in the Waltham Moose Lodge. If you want a beverage you have to register as a "Lodge Guest" which is as simple as signing a "Guest Register." The Moose Lodge has a full bar and we sampled several of their bottled beers (no draft) as well as a Tanqueray and Tonic. Be aware that the bar is cash only so come prepared if you want a beverage. The owners of Burnt Edges are young and ambitious and they know how to serve a wonderful South Shore Bar Pizza. The menu is unique and dynamic as they push the outer edges of SSBP excellence. Very good thin crust bar pizza. The pizza folks rent the kitchen from the local Moose lodge, so this is carry-out only. Apparently the kitchen is small, so the wait can be long. Toppings were fresh and the pizza was worth the wait. As I sat at the end of the bar waiting for our pizzas I struck up a conversation with one of the members. He offered to sponsor me if I wanted to join. Friendly place. The Moose lodge itself is a small, local bar specializing in cheap beer. I had fun waiting. read more

South shore bar pizza- in a shop that operates out of the Moose Lodge kitchen. Their 'website' is a Facebook page. Food pics and menu are posted. Open to everyone for takeout but only Lodge members can dine in. The pick up was a bit confusing - the lodge door was locked and no one at inside made a move to let us in. 3 of us were outside trying to pick up pizza- first time picking up for all of us. I finally gave up thinking someone would let us in and I called the pizza place. Someone quickly came out of the kitchen and let us in. She was friendly and helpful. Enjoyed both the pizza and calzone. Crispy edges like you'd expect with south shore bar pizza. Cash only- they advertise that there's an ATM on site. South Shore Bar Pizza is one of only 2 pizza styles to originate in the Boston area (the other being Shrimp Scampi pizza, which I guess isn't really a style, but is delicious). You may have had bar pizza in other states, but this is where it originated. I've long wished a good bar pizza place would open up west of Boston, and now one has: Burnt Edges Bar Pizza. Located inside the the Moose Lodge #1018 (yes, you read that right, and there is actually a moose head on the wall!), you will have to ring the buzzer or knock on the door to have the bartender buzz you in. Definitely matches the style, cooked in a greased 9-inch metal pan, thin crust that is crispy on the bottom, no cornicione, and the edge is crispy burnt cheese, which is the key characteristic of this style. In BEBP's case, as their name implies, the cheesy edge is really burnt. Probably more burnt than I would prefer, since it doesn't add any flavor (just carbon), but that is the style and definitely pleasingly crispy. Overall, a bit greasy because the crust is fried, but that's the style too. The good news is that it travels well and will be still crispy when you get home (although eventually the oil start to soak the crust). They have 16 specialty pizzas, which are definitely on the creative side, however most didn't sound all that appealing to me (I'm not into lettuce on my pizza, which several feature), so I went for the basic Pepperoni (a very reasonable $12). The edges of the pepperoni slices were nicely crispy, but they don't use super cuppy or super spicy pepperoni. Sauce & cheese blend seem good, but didn't really stick out to me either (blend is not that great cold, so reheat leftovers). There might be some cheddar in it. But I definitely enjoyed it as a whole. I LOVE Hawaiian pizzas (sue me), so I had to have the "Hawaiian Pig Roast" ($15 per specialty pizza) which had Honey BBQ sauce, bacon, pepperoni, ham, pineapple and diced red onion. Tasty, but very very sweet from the honey, which unfortunately covered up the other flavors. However, your kids will love it. Only available for takeout (no delivery), unless you are a lodge member and then you can dine in. Which might be interesting, given all the retired folks I saw drinking vodka tonics at 3PM on a weekday (first time I've ever been in a Moose lodge lol). Overall, these are the genuine article as far as bar pizzas go. A welcome addition to what is otherwise something of a wasteland for pizza in the Waltham area. You may have to look for it among the other businesses (it's to the right of the Boston Muffler garage). After getting buzzed in, go to the far end of the bar to pick up your pizza. Cash only, pay the owner in the kitchen. Easy free parking lot out front. Selfies with the moose head are optional. read more

Well, as a bar pizza enthusiast and tried most of the South shore bar pizza spots. Lynn wood, town spa , Lou and Deb's, Crisp, Mike and Lenny's , Boston Bah , Cape cod, Emma's, others... I ordered the Pig Roast pizza which had the meats pepperoni, bacon, ham, red onion , pineapple, hot honey . Pizza was 15 bucks. The first look ; the pizza looked small ...greasy . Well; first impressions aren't always right. The grease look was actually the hot honey . Pizza ; each slice tasted better... the blend of meats, sauce, cheese, hot honey all worked to a perfect taste....the burnt edges added a on the flavors. All said; this was an excellent bar style pizza and better than most South Shore ones I've eaten thus far. This is the type pizza that tastes even better the next day . They need a store front location or food truck as located inside the Moose lodge and subject to limited days and schedules, access is via a secured Moose lodge entrance. Take out only as needed to be member to eat there. All the Moose members seemed accepting of my pizza pickup and pleasant. Very good pizza and would order 2-3 next time as regular type pizzas reasonable, 15 bucks for this specialty pig roast pizza I thought was fair too. read more

4.5 stars. Read about Burnt Edges bar pizza on a Waltham Facebook page - had never heard of it before last week. I called and placed an order on a Saturday - they said it would be about 45 minutes which was fine. I knew it was inside the Moose Lodge, and after I was buzzed in I did feel like an outsider while I waited a few minutes for the pizzas to be ready. Some nice lady took pitty on me and directed me to the end of the bar near the kitchen where you pick up your pizzas. Got a cheese, pepperoni and a sausage which fed four people with a salad. If people are really hungry you probably need a pizza per person. My whole family thought they were delicious. I thought it might have been slightly too burnt, and might ask for slightly less burnt next time. Really flavorful, slightly sweet sauce. If you like bar pizza this is definitely a gem in Waltham that I am glad I discovered! Remember to bring cash - no credit cards. read more

It appears to be in a private Moose Lodge. We went to the door but was locked. A nice woman finally opened it and was just having drinks. She asked us if we were picking up pizza so I guess that is a thing but we wanted to sit and it appeared that is not the case. We didn't pursue more and maybe she was mistaken she didn't work there. Pizza looked amazing but they should have a blurb on of it is open to the public as sign on door said private. My star is not for food as I didn't try it but had to put a rating in. read more
