I met a friend for lunch on a Wednesday, having never been before. What a lovely, laid back setting for a leisurely lunch. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Our server shared some of the popular dishes and we were both in the mood for brunch. How great to find a place that serves brunch dishes during the week! I had the short ribs hash which was tasty, although the eggs I ordered over easy were hard cooked. I'd deduct a half star for that, but no matter. The accompanying challah toast and potatoes made for a full meal and yet..... when I was debating between that and the blueberry pancakes our server helpfully offered that I could get a single pancake, which I promptly added to my order. Talk about an eyes-bigger-than-your-stomach situation! Luckily I am well acquainted with taking home leftovers and that's exactly what I did. I thought I would give them another try because I did not have the best experience during my first visit. Sadly, the service is just as inconsistent and poor as what most people have described as well as as what I experienced during my first visit. Again, the food was good with a lot of creative touches. I had requested two additional proteins, including duck, and Salmon and specifically requested that it would be just seared while being very rare. Unfortunately, as you can tell from the photo, it was cooked medium, which tends to make salmon dry. Fortunately, they replaced it, and it was much better. My issue is the server who attended to us just seemed very disorganized and truly did not seem to enjoy what she was doing. She almost seemed reluctant to even talk to people. We waited for a while for her to even come around and had to flag her down. She would tend to walk by and look the other way just as she was passing her tables. We eventually found another server who would get her attention. She never came by to refill our waters until we requested it. Another server eventually gave us a large bottle of water which I think was protocol. The server who eventually replaced her was much much better and seemed much more professional. However, our original server eventually came back and just seemed very apathetic. Needless to stay, we did not tip her at all. Not sure how they can stay in business with such poor and inconsistent service. I don't care how good the food is when service is lacking. read more

I really enjoyed the potato gnocchi with truffle parm sauce, the nachos were above average from what I expected from restaurant nachos, and my pork belly tacos were very delicious, despite my hesitation of watermelon in a taco. However, my friends' who'd ordered beef had both of their dishes overcooked from how they'd asked them to be prepared (the medium rare was close to medium/medium well, while the medium well was just well done). The service was a tad slow, we had a reservation and they still took a bit to get us seated. Our server took a while to get to us and wasn't able to read her own handwriting, so she had to come back and ask what we ordered again. In their defense, there was a massive party being served inside, and I'm glad she asked us over getting our food wrong, but the restaurant was otherwise empty. Ambiance inside was very nice, the bar was long and had plenty of seating. We sat outdoors because of the nice weather and they were just plastic picnic benches but it was clean and comfortable. I have been to this restaurant four times now, and the food is good but the service has consistently been pretty mediocre if not bad. My table had consistently been neglected by our server. We ordered three courses, and a table of the same size who did the same directly next to us sat down after us and left before. There seems to be an inherent bias against younger audiences. By no means should have been here for over two hours...server didn't check on our table for over 40 minutes at one point. Not sure if I'll return. read more

Cute place. The servers were extremely friendly and the food was enjoyable! I absolutely love the respective menus for mocktails and eggs Benedict, the two things I get most excited to see on a menu. The Strawberry Orange Berry Nojito was nice and light. I wanted something flavorful but wasn't in the mood for ham so the variety of options for eggs Benedict were exciting. I chose the eggs Benedict with pulled pork. A good decision! It was an adjustment to have pulled pork without the moisture and flavor from the BBQ sauce that it is typically prepare with, but who knew eggs went well with pulled pork? I thought it was an interesting take on a favorite. I am extremely picky about hollandaise and this one was not bad but not outstanding. What I hate most is when hollandaise has an overwhelming amount of lemon in it and this one did not commit that crime. Just a little bit bland but not egregious. The potatoes were very well seasoned. The croissant French toast was great, texturally balanced. Nothing I hate more than a soggy French toast and this one had no sogginess. I only wished for some fruit or whipped cream personally. This looks like a generic American restaurant in Waltham, but actually it's very very good. Whoever came up with this idea of a scratch kitchen is a genius -- everyone should do it -- and this place does it well. We got the fettuccine pasta with chicken and the salmon with cauliflower paste. They were both delicious. They didn't skimp on the chicken like other places do. The chicken was perfectly cooked and tender. The pasta was al dente and perfect. The artichokes were perfectly cooked. The salmon was perfect. He'll, even the nojito was great. I subtract one star for the wobbly table. I hope people crowd this place and give it the love it deserves. We need more places that cook with fresh ingredients and cook for each customer right. read more

What a great place on Moody Street! We made reservations for NYE and I'm glad we did. They had specials for New Years, so I decided to get one of the cocktails, and it was good! Would recommend the Sparkling Pom Kiss. I then ordered the steak tacos. They were so fresh and tasty. I loved the sauce and all of the flavors. It was paired with a handful of chips and a salsa. This salsa was incredible! Again, very fresh. The ingredients they use seem to be top notch. My friend got the caesar salad (half portion) and the steak bomb spring rolls. She said they were both great as well! The ambiance in here was also so nice. They have candles on every table, and the decor takes you out of Waltham for a minute into an upper-scale New York feeling restaurant. The vibes here are top notch. Although the food was delicious, only downside was I was expected the portions to be a little bigger for the tacos, served with rice or something. The chips were great but I left a little hungry. Not sure if the tacos are supposed to be ordered as an appetizer, so If I come back I would definitely order off the entree section! Now I want to review their NYE party. We ended up coming back later in the evening for their NYE party. There was a DJ and lights...btw the DJ was awesome and played all the right music! They also gave out free champagne to toast with at midnight, and had catered Chinese food for everyone! Wow. Bistro781 is a nice little place to grab a bite to eat. We were pleasantly surprised with the taste of the food the portion sizes were good. We loved the cornbread, highly recommended if you don't try anything else. Be warned that there are some golden raisins in it I believe so expect that texture in it. (We didn't mind it once we knew it was in there). The drinks were really good I had the angry mule and it was delicious with just the right kick. My wife had the spicy prickly pear and it was really good as well. For our entrees, I had the steak frites and the steak was done perfectly. Paired with the Parmesan truffle fries made for a delicious bite. I also enjoyed the smoked tomato chimichurri which I don't think I've ever had before but will definitely have again. My wife ordered the sweet potato crusted salmon and really enjoyed the sauce as well as the crusting on the salmon. The Brussels sprouts were ok could have used more hot honey in my opinion but I know people vary in spice level and taste. My son had the bistro burger and said it was good and my daughter had pasta with Alfredo and kudos to the homemade Alfredo sauce. The service was excellent and our server was very friendly and attentive. One side note, although they have a kids menu, the setup isn't really designed for young kids which is ok but something to be aware of. At night they definitely have the lights down low which can be a little difficult for younger kids. A welcoming smile or friendly hello is kind of the entire purpose of the host stand. We stood awkwardly waiting until we were acknowledged with no pleasantries. Ok. No problem. The shining star was the server David. The guy was top notch. The fried oysters came out of soggy and cold. David inquired why they weren't being consumed and I expressed the issue. He immediately had them fried again. Second shot was better but still left something to be desired. The nachos came out looking great. I was excited, until I tasted how salty they were. Already sending the oysters back, I decided not to make an issue of the nachos. Needless to say, they were barely touched. It was like the steak was heavily salted and so were the chips. It was not a good experience. They look great though. Good presentation. David asked if we wanted a box and we declined. The inside of the place is nice. It's very well decorated. BEST spot on Moody St., hands down! Great for connecting with friends. Good everything, cocktails, appetizers, entrees and desserts. Each trip brought me such joy, whether you sit at the bar, high top, table or the lounge area up front; it's a vibe - they even have a dope live music set on some Fridays. My favorite selections (to name a few) are seafood paella (watch out for lemons), pan seared scallops and short rib Mac and cheese. The staff really makes it feel like place you wouldn't mind frequenting - special callout to Elizabeth! Parking on Moody street is like winning a scratch off, so good luck. Cooked perfectly but I will say I was expecting some type of sauce or spicy rub for the hot wings. They were plain but tasted solid. Pricey restaurant for average-tasting food and ridiculously long wait times. Came here as a party of 4 on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was about 70% full, but there were still open tables and plenty of seating for parties of different sizes. We had arrived at around 7PM and got seated right away. It took about 10 minutes for a waitress to come and take our drink orders. We ordered 4 drinks and received them half an hour later. HALF AN HOUR for drinks. Following this, it took another 20 minutes for someone to come and take our order. An hour for only drink orders to be placed is ridiculous, especially on a week night. As a general rule of thumb, restaurants should take no longer than 45 minutes to take the order/prepare food for a party of 3-4. The drinks were overpriced and did not taste great. We tried the lavender and watermelon mock tails. The lavender just tasted like pure sprite, while the watermelon was lacking sweetness and didn't taste great at all. Not worth $9 a drink at all. As for the food, we ordered the Bistro cheese burger, crunch wrap burger, and 2 steaks. The food took about another half hour to come out. One thing I will give points for is that the burgers and steaks were cooked well to order. The burger was tasty but the quality of the toppings was okay. The avocado, lettuce, and tomato were not very crisp and we're so-so in terms of freshness. The toasted bun was tasty, though. The bistro came with Parmesan fries, which the Parmesan had absolutely no flavor. Disappointing! Pretty much same review for the crunch wrap burger, but it came with Cajun fries which were better than the Parmesan fries. According to my friends, the steaks were cooked well but the portions were a bit small for the price ($32). Average taste, nothing to write home about. Came with a side of baked potato which was also mediocre. We ended dinner at about 9:30PM, but we're still in the mood for dessert. We ordered the Turtle cheesecake, which was original cheesecake doused in caramel and chocolate syrup. The sauces complimented the cheesecake well, but the cheesecake itself was poor quality. Instead of a rich texture, it was very cottage-cheese like.. which means cheap! Not worth $10 a slice. read more

The brunch is unreal! I had the best breakfast sandwich i have ever had hands down- the morning staple breakfast sandwich. The home fries were also very good, and I do not normally like home fries. They have an entire eggs Benedict menu that my friend ordered from and also the same for bloody Mary's fixtures. The cinnamon bun skillet was unbelievable- warm, gooey and covered in icing. The waitress was really nice and attentive as well. It was very busy so I would recommend making a reservation. Great spot on Moody St.! I have been for brunch and dinner. It is an American restaurant with a HUGE menu. The Brunch menu is one of the largest I have seen. The food and drink options are great. Everyone is bound to find something they like. The service was great the few times I have been, no complaints there. It can be a pretty busy spot, so I would recommend making a reservation. There is parking on the street (parallel) or lots available; depending on time/day there may be a charge, but it's pretty cheap. GOOD: Nice vegan menu. Buddha bowl is good, my partner added salmon (generous portion--should be for $15!) The dish is a bit oily/heavy, could use some brightness, maybe pickled onions or beets. BAD: Tofu scramble is NOT really a tofu scramble. It's a tofu stir fry with 3-4 large pieces of tofu, large pieces of cauliflower, onions, etc. all overcooked, almost burnt. This dish needs something light/fresh, parsley would help. It's important if you're going to offer a vegan item to make it well. They could serve this with rice and it would be a dinner item. True tofu scramble is smaller pieces of tofu and chopped up veggies. Often with turmeric and/or black salt to give it an eggy flavor/look. This came with dry toast, because they don't bother to stock readily available plant-based butter. Home fries were very good. UGLY: Six dollars for a small cup of mediocre coffee! I see in previous reviews that it's "bottomless," but we were not told that even when we commented on the small cups, and we don't need refills. Online menu price is $4. We both requested vegan milk (they only have almond) and we got a tiny cup, enough for one. The noise level at 10:30 am on a Sunday was uncomfortably loud. Music with a heavy bass was unpleasant and unnecessary given that people are trying to converse. This causes people to talk louder. The place needs acoustic tiles. I wanted to love this place, but the noise level, execution of menu items, and prices for some items make it unlikely that I will return. read more

My dinner partner had an oyster burger with truffle fries, and he raved about it. He said, best burger in a very long time. The Buddha bowl was served warm with cauliflower, beets, squash, chickpeas, qinoa, and avocado. It was wonderful. I really wanter to try the nutella pizza for dessert, but there were only 2 of us, and for $20 it seemed too much for us the handle. I wish they had a personal pie size to try. So we had no dessert. I joined a table with 4 others and we made a reservation the night before. The table we had was close to the entrance door which was fine with us (since there was a large birthday party of 20 something's behind us). As you can imagine it got kind of loud but we did the best we could to hear what we were discussing. The appetizer we had of nachos was delicious and the main dishes of food came out in nice presentations. We even had dessert and some of the desserts got a wow factor. The server did well in checking that we had everything we needed up until the time the large party showed up that reserved many tables. My only wish was that the music that was playing was turned down a little so we didn't have to be yelling across the table at each other or have to get closer to our friends to hear what was being said. This place does have outdoor dining if you choose and the front doors are opened to let in extra circulation of air.
