The Burrito King lives! I once lived a block away from this drive-thru/walk-up place. Super friendly staff and quick service make this a Lawrence staple. Servings here are gigantic, sloppy, and comforting. This is one of those places at which I rarely went to while sober, being one of the few places open past two any-night of the week. I personally enjoy the breakfast burritos, they're simple and satisfying. The Nachos are great. Beware of the vegetarian burrito, the only vegetables Burrito King serves are tomatoes and lettuce, making for a pretty bland bite, but adding guac can really helps this one out. read more

I have been to this place probably about 20 times. It is one of a few places open at 2 am on a sunday night and thats prob only thing it has going for it. My order has been wrong 33% of the time (veggie nachos, no sour cream, no rice (the rice has chicken stock in it)). I tip every time bc my order has mods and every time I wish I hadn't. Last time the guy called me a "puto" as I was handing him a dollar (spanish for b**ch). Don't eat here. If you're really hungry, ask a homeless person for some chips or something. read more

There's one rule to Burrito King: Come drunk. I've been eating at the 'King since '08, back when they had 6 tacos for $3, and $3 burritos. I lived on 11th and Tennessee and drunkenly stumbled to this place dozens of times in college. There are very few food options in the wee hours of the morning, and if you're hammered -- it doesn't get any better then BK. My go to is any of the breakfast burritos, but INSTEAD of beans, ask for potatoes. The service is fairly quick, the food is always served piping hot, and the salsa is actually pretty damn good. The prices have gone up, but they're still reasonable in comparison to other fast food options. This place deserves to be recognized as a city land mark. Borderline 3 star, but as of late they deserve a 4 star rating. The young owner that took over a couple years ago is usually working the drive thru in the mornings. This is where most of my experiences have come from with Burrito King over the past couple years. Before that, Burrito King was turning into a complete dump with terrible food!. Burrito King is the Lawrence version of Kansas City's Pancho's. My go to items at Burrito King are the breakfast burritos and breakfast taco's. really difficult to mess those items up and will usually get freshly made items during breakfast. No frozen or pre-made menu items during breakfast time. Don't misunderstand me, they have improved their regular lunch/dinner offerings a great deal with "some" fresh ingredients. I'm not a big meat eater for breakfast. Therefore, most of the breakfast items can be prepared without meat and still taste delicious and fulfilling. Try the egg, potato, rice, beans, grilled onion, and pepper burrito. Grade A in taste and price. Taco's are usually prepared with eggs and whatever toppings you request. I will say this now; Burrito King has some of the finest red and green salsas in the area. Their sauces can compete with some of the best in Kansas City as well. Try for yourself. Their street taco's are very good. Regular burritos are good. They serve ice cold Mexican Coke which is always a plus. The owner is extremely friendly and accommodating. I know they have had some awful servers over the years. Especially at night when all the crazy's used to frequent Burrito King. Well, here are a few negatives......Main piece of advise I can give you is to "Check your order EVERY single time you go through Burrito King". Weather it's the owner or anyone else working the windows, you can be sure to get a surprise in your bag at least once. This has happened to me a few times over the years. You will order an item, get half way down the street or sitting outside at one of their tables and realize you have been given something completely opposite of what you ordered. On occasion you may come out on top. But other times, you will be frustrated with the complete lack of attention to your order. For instance.....I ordered a breakfast burrito one time and ended up with a tamale instead. How is that even possible? By the way, the tamales are terrible. Not fresh and taste like 100% lard. Also pay close attention to your bill. I've been charged $1-$2 more for my food and have no idea why. The thing is, if you say something, they usually realize the mistake and take care of it. How many people don't notice it and are being overcharged? Overall, not a bad place for a quick meal or morning snack. read more

A Lawrence original! Staff is friendly but understaffed and so very slow anytime they have more than 2 concurrent customers. A great value but do not mistake them for fast food. The location exacerbates this as once you are in - you are in FOREVER! I think most of the delay is due to customers but it can still be very frustrating with only two employees working most of the time. Plan for 10 - 15 minutes and you won't be disappointed - if you are looking for fast food that is passable in quality this is not the place. Solid food but slow for a drive through. I'll give it the three based on the breakfast burritos. Bacon, chorizo, meatless with eggs, potatoes and beans, not quite as big as your head, but definitely filling. BK does it again. Burger King's latest foray into the ever-changing culinary world is BK Burrito King - a drive thru Mexican joint with loads of character, an extensive menu, and late hours that are sure to satisfy your BK urge whenever it hits you. There I was, second in line as the crowd waited, mostly patiently, for the BK 2 AM drive thru. They were running just a few minutes behind and asked us to be nice. Behind me some people spoke in excited, hushed whispers about how this was just like that Food Network Show about fast food. The woman in front of me complained that there were several fast food drive thrus near her work place and they never opened late. I said, "Well, but I bet no one working those windows ever worked with a pregnant 16 year-old." Silence. Crickets chirped. Sigh. I had plenty of time to scrutinize the building, lovingly restored from what appears to have been a Checkers or Rally's. The menu was hard to read from very far back, but artfully done. When I got my chance to order, I asked for the fish taco and the Mexican banh mi torta. In just a few minutes, my dear partner and I were enjoying a very different nom nom from our car seats. They did not serve these items. The fish taco would have been divine - imagine three small pieces of fish breaded and golden fried on a bed of cucumber, radish, and avocado. Possibly there was a sauce that would balance the dry, crisp ingredients perfectly. The torta would have been an entirely new experience, with a creamy, decadent liver pate oozing from the bun. Inside, one may find cilantro, beans, pork, and these amazing little pickled carrots and chilies. Possibly there would be a hot sauce involved, but I think mine might not have received any hot sauce. It would still be a beautiful sandwich that I will dream of often. Instead, I received a bean burrito. Beans inside of a tortilla. A few observations on things to improve along the way- I didn't receive any flatware or napkins with my meal. I asked for a napkin when the container with my burrito came with beans all over the bottom. I don't think I would have received one otherwise. They did not have a trashcan or waste receptical of any sort. They might want to consider that in the future. I wish the portions had been smaller so that I might have sampled more of the menu.The menu board is difficult to read, though nice. A great addition to the drunk food scene. read more

I LOOOVE Burrito King. People have said to try it drunk but I've only been there sober and still like it. Huge portions and the food is hot and fresh. I love that the food is wrapped in foil, too. I love the #1 burrito- beef, rice and beans. Terrific. It is difficult to eat a whole one at one sitting. The salsa could not be better. The prices are great, too. Despite its reptation for "only being good at 2:00 AM when you're drunk" I really like Burrito King no matter what time of day it is. There have been a few sketchy events that have taken place at this location (i.e. shootings, stabbings), so you might avoid coming here when it gets dark. This is my late night go to in Lawrence for 'fast' Mexican food with a more authentic, well crafted feel. I haven't tried most of the menu, but the tacos are on point! And for the price, I don't think it gets much better! Open until 3 am and they give plenty of sauce, for this I am most thankful. One of the few downsides is that the wait can be kinda long even @ 2 am on a Saturday night because everyone is hip to the game. I have been here multiple times and been let down each time. I ordered a ham breakfast burrito yet they were out of ham so I went with bacon, with no beans and after receiving it with beans I ate it without complaining and then went to the window to refill my water cup with 50¢ in hand. The woman at the window rudely refused and said "she didn't want my money" keep in mind this was at 3am with multiple drunk people at the window as I was nicely asking her to simply do her job yet she still refused. This is one of the Lawrence classics I enjoy most. Granted it's really only for drunk people but they do allow the occasional sober person to slip through. Just slur your speech while ordering and you'll be fine. As for the food itself... well it's kinda terrible about 90% of the time. That leaves a 10% chance of pure delicious. Actually, I probably shouldn't comment on the food there because for years the only thing I've EVER had there is the "Bean and Cheese Burrito." That's it. Beans, Cheese, and Tortilla. I've probably had somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 ~ 75 bean and cheese burritos from this place. I highly recommend it, but it does come with a few problems. Firstly, they never properly heat the burrito so it usually (90% of the time) comes out with barely warm beans and completely unmelted cheese. Mmmmm. This can be fixed by warming it up in the microwave or toaster oven. I'm guessing it would cost too much for Burrito King to do this themselves. Damn overhead costs messing with my bean and cheeser. Secondly, the sauce/salsa crap they give you is terrible and tastes like tobasco mixed with orphan tears. Solution: get some 'Mrs. Renfro's Black Bean Salsa' and use about half a jar per burrito. Burritos are usually in the $3 range and they serve breakfast burritos and some other terrible sounding things. It's drive-thru only but if you live close by they have another window that accepts walk-up orders. I guess you could probably eat in the little outside sitting area but it would probably be uncomfortable and you'd likely get ridiculed by drunk people. In short, you should probably eat here at least once in your lifetime, preferably at 3AM while intoxicated. read more

I absolutely love the chicken tacos. Simple ingredients that form perfection. The tortillas have flavor unlike most places. I lived in California and ate at dives, shacks, and out of a ladies trunk occasionally and BK chicken tacos is as good as it gets. Ask for lime to squirt over the taco and it is sublime. read more

I've never had a bad experience at burrito king until my most recent visit. I ordered my food as usual and pulled forward to pay. The lady working took my card and after a few moments gave it back. I pulled around to the other side and sat there for several minutes, watching the two of them stand around inside talking for approximately ten minutes. I heard what sounded like a blender, which was odd. Once I was finally given my food I went home and found a hair in it. I've never had an experience like this here, so I'm rather disappointed. Several negatives added together make Burrito King a bad business. First, they shorted me on my order, tacos were missing when I got home. Minor issue, happens sometimes. Second, overcharged by $6 on entire order, even the missing tacos. Annoying. Third, when I called to discuss the overcharge and get a credit, was told the person on site couldn't do anything. This place is a decent burrito joint. They have some good offerings. We usually go in the morning for breakfast burritos. Yes, we get burritos here in the morning, sober and on purpose. Their good burritos are made even better when you add their salsa. Tiny little cups of greatness.
