My fiancé and I make sure we always stop at Burrito King if we're ever by or in Lawrence. If you're from KC, it's like the Panchos of Lawrence. They're open 'til 3am and have delicious burritos (and other Mexican food). Our favorite item to get is the vegetarian chorizo and ask for no cheese or sour cream for our vegan ways. Sometimes we'll ask to add potato to it! The have 3 different sauces (mild, medium, and hot) and each of them are unique from another and tasty in their own ways. FYI: they have no inside seating, it's either drive thru or about 5 outside tables and benches. Another note, since it is a college town, be known that there will probably be drunk kids hanging around that joint after midnight. read more

When I went to college at KU, this was a staple of late night food as they are open until 3am seven days a week. Now, 15 years later, I went at 9:30 pm on a Saturday! They are also open at 7am and have breakfast burritos as well.There was 10+ cars waiting in the drive through. This tells you how much everyone likes it. I got the spicy burrito with lengua topped with salsa verde. Not exactly fast when there are that many cars waiting. Not authentic either. But still yummy after all these years. read more

This place is great!!! Always the best choice for Mexican in Lawrence. They have outdoor seating only and drive thru, so it's low-risk for COVID. Staff are always super nice, and prices are great too. But of course then best thing is the food. They're so many options, and every one is as good as the other. I get there and it's cash only (understandable) so drive all the way to the bank to get cash... come back and order my burrito then get home and take a bite to discover chorizo instead of potato. This place is my home away from home. You can come here from 7-3am and that's what I need in my life. Their food is the best fast food out there and my favorite Mexican food to eat out. They have a stamp card so after every so many burritos you get one free. Eat here once and your life will be changed. And as a vegetarian, their menu is excellent. Coming from a place where there are never ending restaurants for fresh fast AUTHENTIC burritos, I NEED to get a good burrito from time to time. Sadly, I have been let down. I will start by saying that the service is quick and they were all really nice there. It was a pretty straight to the point. We got the bacon breakfast burrito, the chorizo breakfast burrito, bean n cheese burrito, and a bowl. Be warned that they LOAD the breakfast burrito up with beans so instead of there being a good mix with beans it ends up serving as a filler for the lack of meat and eggs that actually showed up in the food. If you've ever gone to an authentic place then you've had the delicious fresh tortilla, that gets a little crisp at the closings. Here NO, the tortilla is like a store bought mission one so it just ends up tasting processed and floury. After seeing people rave about being authentic, I was ready. This is probably a good choice if you've had a couple drinks and are left with no food options in Lawrence but even then meh. HIGHLIGHT WAS THE SALSA.... it was the best thing I ate. All in all I was left upset, my stomach hurt from all of the dry-ish beans that were in my burrito, and I am still on the hunt for fresh authentic burritos in Lawrence. read more

I ordered a cheese quesadilla with a Diet Pepsi and I was so excited to enjoy my meal. They have you pay at the first window, which is also where they give you your drink. I'm type 1 diabetic and have had my fair share of mishaps with getting regular Pepsi rather than diet so I when I took my first sip, I noticed it was wayyy too sweet and asked to make sure it was diet. I even mentioned I had diabetes to ensure they knew that this wasn't just a preference, it was a medical issue. The lady who made my drink shrugged me off and "confirmed" it was diet. I was hesitant but didn't want to say anything since she didn't seem too bothered to help. Something they probably don't realize is that I have the ability to test whether a drink is diet or not. Well, low and behold, my blood sugar meter read 600, meaning regular sugar NOT diet. I'm very disappointed as I've been coming here since living in Lawrence in 2020 and was hoping for a better experience. The cheese quesadilla was still fire tho. read more

Burrito King ... Monarch of Most Mediocre Mexican Meal I love Mexican food and I like reasonably priced Mexican food even better. Enter Burrito King. I have tried pretty much every Mexican restaurant in Lawrence and have been sadly disappointed by the mediocrity ... and Burrito King did not let me down in that context. Just a few blocks from our home, I drive by the drive-in restaurant daily yet had not given them a try until yesterday. You walk or drive up to a window to order and I was quickly greeted by a friendly young man eager to take my order, almost too eager in that I did not have a chance to read the menu posted outside before being prompted to order. I was surprised to find numerous other options beside burritos on the menu ... tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas ... all at fairly reasonable prices. I ordered the enchilada plate (3 enchiladas, rice, and beans for $6.95), a "steak" and bean burrito ($4.98), and chips and salsa ($2) in order to sample just a few options. I prefer cheese and onion enchiladas and would think at the same price as meat (steak, chicken, pork) that there would be an abundance of fillings, but I was again disappointed. The red sauce covering the tubes of corn was bland and sparse, barely providing any flavor to the tortillas which were void of any significant fillings. I tasted no onions and the small amount of cheese inside did not quite make it it to the ends, leaving just tortilla and a little tasteless sauce for the first and last bite of each enchilada. The rice and beans were equally tasteless. The burrito tasted "OK", but there was very little "steak", mostly beans, with a little cheese, and some some lettuce. At $5, I would expect a bit more beef and cheese, maybe some guacamole. The chips were crisp and tasty and the salsa well done, appearing homemade (not out of a can or jar) with hints of poblano pepper and cilantro. Students probably love the quantities and prices offered at Burrito King, but for those of us who prefer quality over quantity, Burrito King falls short, at least on this visit. I tried to give this place another try after recent multiple bad experiences after coming here for the last 4 years as a student. Today I ordered 2 burritos and an order of nachos. And we have them two completed punch cards so we were only charged for the nachos. Well after waiting and when we get out food we only have 1 burrito and the order of nachos. After explaining this we were cussed out by the employee for a few minutes as we explained we were missing a burrito. When he was given the receipt he said we were only charged for the nachos and started cussing us out again. As we explained we had given him 2 punch cards and that's why only the nachos were on the receipt. We just left to avoid further confrontation only for the order of nachos to be wrong and they didn't give us either of the burritos we had ordered. I can't recommend this place at all. Let me tell yah. I have been going to Burrito King for 15 years. I grew up in Lawrence and went as a child. I have never had an experience like I just did. My friend paid for our food, and the cashier got the change wrong writing it as receiving $15 instead of $25. No big deal, right? Wrong, apparently. When she brought it to the attention of the woman, she started to yell at her and tell her she was wrong. My friend calmly explained how she knew that she handed her an extra $10 and she continued to escalate, also she wasn't wearing a mask and was learning down right in my friend's face. I recently ordered one burrito from here, I tipped three dollars and then asked for a cup of water. They took the three dollars and then charged me for the water. Also, when I got home, my order was incorrect so I called them and informed them how my order was incorrect. They then said that not only did I need a receipt, but I had to return to the store immediately to get a replacement burrito. A Lawrence original! Staff is friendly but understaffed and so very slow anytime they have more than 2 concurrent customers. A great value but do not mistake them for fast food. The location exacerbates this as once you are in - you are in FOREVER! I think most of the delay is due to customers but it can still be very frustrating with only two employees working most of the time. Plan for 10 - 15 minutes and you won't be disappointed - if you are looking for fast food that is passable in quality this is not the place. Solid food but slow for a drive through. Great burritos, yes, the kind to surely entice drunken college students at 2:00 a.m. when the booze has been consumed far too long. But that's not me. College is a long way in the mirror I'm afraid. Tacos. Yes, their delicious mouth watering pastor, carne, beef or chicken tacos, nicely wrapped and to order with what you want. Taken to go you get home and rescue them from foil and their nicely double-wrapped and still hot and moist as they should be. The meat is flavorful and seasoned properly. Normally I drive to Kansas City when I want great tacos, but Burrito King is decent for Lawrence--a town filled with more than its share of crappy fast food and upper-scale wannabe dining spots that aren't quite hitting the mark on a routine basis. Burrito King takes the pretense out. Fast Mexican food served by Hispanic folks that know how to make a meal worth the price. Honestly, if this food was in Kansas City I'd probably rate it a 3, but for Lawrence it gets my four-star rating. A great little spot that's just a little different in an area of town that clearly has the need for just this kind of food. read more

But hey, this is Lawrence, KS, right? The veggie burrito is affordable, tasty, and comes with some pretty darn good salsa. And the tamales are a delicious surprise. My advice?
