That will probably be nice. I found this location pretty dingy, dark and really hot inside. The washroom has some damage from water all along the baseboards. I grew up in Seattle and am accustomed to good authentic tix Mexican food from the coast. The menu here tells you off the hop that it's going to be authentic and EXPLODING with flavour. Prices are great with lots of small shareable plates. My teen and I ordered the beet salad (bursting with flavour and of course authentic cotija cheese), chicken quesadilla (so good with sautéed peppers but I forgot to take a pic), and molletes (traditional open faced Mexican sandwich with beans, cheese, and pico). We also tried to order the Jamaica hibiscus water but it wasn't ready and was still being boiled. Will definitely try it next time! They are still awaiting their liquor license so no review on cocktails or authentic margaritas, just yet ;-) The beet salad (beet tiradito) was OUTSTANDING and I will probably order that every single time I come! Thinly sliced roasted chilled beets, arugula, cotija cheese, grape tomatoes and housemade orange honey dressing! TO DIE FOR! I love that the salad was small enough that I can still order a single taco or appy with it! Next up was the molletes appy - opened faced sandwich with melted cheese, beans, pico and sour cream. Unfortunately the pico didn't sit right with me - all I could taste was onions. I prefer a pico that isn't mostly onions and one where the raw onions have sat a bit in the juices of the tomatoes and citrus. I brought the sandwich home for hubs (who surprisingly said he could t eat it because it tasted like an onion sandwich rather than the pico being a topping). So if you LOVE raw onions, this may be the sandwich for you. Next up was the quesadilla with chicken and lime crema. Oh. Em. Gee. That was seriously the BEST quesadilla I have ever had in Alberta. It puts all the other places I've tried here to SHAME. The sautéed peppers, corn, and beans inside were heavenly and cooked to perfection. There was a hefty amount of pico on top which my teen mostly picked off (also found it too strong on the onion today). The lime crema was OUTSTANDING. I seriously cannot wait to come back even if the pico wasn't my fave. Also the restaurant is super cute - and they've really given it a cantina vibe despise the small strip mall location. (And let's face it, it's a pretty fun train to take a ride on!)…read moreThis time I was excited to try Calle Mexico (which means Mexico Street), which began back in 2015 as a food truck (that still operates). They've had a couple of different restaurant locations around the city over the years but are now comfortably situated in Queen Alexandra near Whyte Avenue. You'll probably remember their place as the old Atlantic Trap & Gill Pub which closed its doors in 2018. Trading fishing nets for brightly-coloured piñatas, the space now feels like a portal to a city somewhere in Mexico. EDify Magazine named Calle Mexico Best Mexican Restaurant 2024 and I never say "no" to a delicious taco. Neither should you. Stopping in on a snowy Saturday evening (like I did) is highly advisable, because who doesn't want to pretend that they've left on a Mexican vacation for a little while? The inside of the restaurant is quite spacious and the decor feels authentically Mexican without going too far. From the gorgeous aforementioned many-pointed piñatas adorning the ceiling to the beautiful black and white photography on the walls, the dining area feels vibrant in a grounded way. As if this is real Mexican and not just a show. The friendly (and very Spanish-speaking) staff handed us some menus upon our entry and told us to sit anywhere we wanted. We were also instructed to order our food at the counter (hostess desk?) once we were ready. One thing that I appreciated right away is that the menu isn't humongous. Lots of restaurants have insanely sprawling menus, and while choice is nice, I almost prefer a concise menu of really dialed-in plates. Quality over quantity. Once our banquete plan was made we placed our order and awaited our food (which came out so quickly!) to the sounds of energetic Mexican music. While there are cocktails and beer on the drink menu, I always favour a Horchata ($3.50) and will continue to drink these all around town. A traditional Mexican beverage made up of white rice soaked in water and then flavoured with cinnamon, the Calle Mexico version is really good! I liked how smooth and well-strained theirs is because this drink can sometimes be quite gritty in other restaurants. It's sweet, nutty, and milky but also drinkable and refreshing. Plus they served a really big cup of it! I liked this horchata a whole lot. Next, we felt that it was prudent to order some Chips and Salsa (Delicious homemade salsa & chips - $8.50) because these are just a good time to have on the table. All good Mexican restaurants make their own tortilla chips in-house and Calle Mexico is no exception. It makes a massive difference in quality and taste! Frankly, I wouldn't trust a "Mexican restaurant" that doesn't make their own chips. These ones were very good! Nicely crispy and salted, they tasted very fresh. The big bowl of salsa was also impossibly fresh but mild in flavour - no spice. However, if you are looking for some heat Calle Mexico has got you! There's an entire salsa bar that customers are free to visit at their leisure! With four types to choose from; Guacamole (mild), Salsa Verde (medium), Roasted Peppers (medium), and Roasted Habanero (very spicy), we grabbed samples of each one! My favourite was probably the roasted peppers one, which had great flavour and a decent amount of heat. The roasted habanero one was very spicy as promised!! You could really taste that it was made with real concentrated dried and roasted peppers. High on our list of things to try was The Famous "Calle Mexico" Tostadas (Crispy tortillas topped with beans, chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, radish, sour cream, feta cheese and avocado - $16.00). They're famous! I can see why these are famous because they were the best thing that we ate! Crispy crunchy tortillas topped with a mountain of fresh ingredients, there was nothing not to love! (Except for the fact that tostadas are notoriously difficult to eat. Do they explode into pieces after the first bite for everyone? Just me?) The chicken was especially tender and delicious and I liked the nice, perfectly ripe slices of avocado on top. So much freshness and so much flavour! These tostadas truly represent what Calle Mexico is all about. There are eight different tacos to choose from on the menu and it seemed that picking one to try was an important part of our dining experience. Sure, they've got chicken, pork, beef, and even fish. But I'm always more curious about the unique options. Beef Tongue (Lengua) Tacos (Tender shredded beef tongue topped with cilantro and onion - $18.00) fit the bill! This is what we're talking about when we say "nose to tail" cuisine, isn't it? The pieces of meat were very tender and not at all offensive (in case that's what you were expecting). And yes, there really are three amigos - three brothers, actually. The Rosales brothers are from Oaxaca and have been treating Edmonton to their vibrant flavours for nearly twenty years. It's no surprise that the Edmonton Journal voted them as Favourite Mexican Restaurant 2023 after becoming such a long-lasting and trusted name in Mexican fare. What better day of the week to visit a bumpin' Mexican joint than on Tuesday! Taco Tuesday, that is! I highly recommend making a reservation at Three Amigos because every time that I visit I watch people get turned away at the door because the restaurant is often full. This is especially true on a Tuesday, the day of my recent dinner. You'll find Three Amigos in a strip mall in Duggan, not far removed from all of the south side hustle and bustle. You can't possibly miss them with their awesome sign with a giant lit-up number three on it. Stepping into the space is like a portal straight to Mexico! The colours! The energy! The smells! The restaurant is positively alive with the vibration of Mexico and it's a feast for the senses. No inch of the dining area is spared from a bright splash of paint, an interesting piece of art, or something else that feels incredibly authentic. I love the corrugated tin walls, the tabletops made out of metal Corona signs, and the Latin music filling the air. And I especially love the bathrooms, which you need to see for yourself. Let's just say that they have leaned into an entire unexpected Simpsons theme down in that end of the restaurant and it's hilariously wonderful. You will certainly not be short on atmosphere at Three Amigos. The servers are warm and friendly, offering a glow of hospitality that makes every customer feel welcome. Seated at my table, I was treated to an excellent view of the entire room and I watched as each and every table filled and became occupied for the evening. I could think of no better way to start the meal than with a Horchata Aguas Frescas ($5.00) and Totopos (House made corn tortilla chips, salsa - $12.00). Horchata is my forever favourite and I order it every time (if I'm not drinking alcohol). A traditional Mexican beverage made up of white rice soaked in water and then flavoured with cinnamon. It's sweet, nutty, and milky but also somehow quite refreshing. The horchata at Three Amigos is very good, however I did find that the bottom of my drink was very dense with ground cinnamon. I found the grainy sips to be a bit much and could have used for the cinnamon to have been dialed back a bit. The totopos seem simple enough but are not to be missed. The heaping mountain of tortilla chips are the perfect thing for everyone to munch on, and let me tell you, these housemade chips are addictive. You can tell that they taste freshly fried and are salted just the right amount. Nothing like the bagged kind from the grocery store. I also really enjoyed the three salsas that were served with the chips, each a different level of heat. The bright red one (Roja) was the mildest, while the darker red one (Diablo) was spicy, smoky, and full of deep chipotle flavour. My favourite is the creamy green salsa (Verde) which is medium in spice. The menu at Three Amigos is HUGE. It can be overwhelming to consider all of the options from starters to mains to tacos (an entire section all its own) to tortas. The best way to sample a lot of different things (especially if you're undecided) is to try the Amigo Plato (Empanada, taco dorado, tostada, gordita, chicken tinga taco, guacamole, crema, pico de gallo, refried beans, rice - $29.00), a sampler plate which consists of a surprising number of items. The food all arrived extremely quickly, and placed in front of us, this platter summed up Three Amigos in one single dish. Exciting, bursting with colours, each option enticing in its own way. I wasn't quite sure where to begin but I just started eating! The empanada, a stuffed corn pastry with chicken on the inside, was fried to a golden perfection. However, of all of the items, I did find it the least exciting. Next to the empanada was the taco dorado, a rolled fried corn tortilla stuffed with chicken and potato. The shape made it easy to eat, but again the overall flavour wasn't so interesting. Things kicked up a notch with the tostada, this crispy fried corn tortilla is topped with refried beans, braised chipotle chicken, queso fresco, avocado, and pico de gallo. I find a tostada pretty difficult to eat because as soon as you pick it up and bite it the whole thing often shatters and falls apart! But I love them anyway because you get the satisfaction of a crunchy tortilla paired with a fresh and delicious flavour combo piled high on top.
