Anthony Bourdain claimed that Burt's Place was the only deep dish pizza he ever loved. This was my second time here. I came last year for my birthday in the fall, and my sister loved the pizza so much she wanted to go for her birthday this past July. The patio is great to have during the summer because they can seat a lot more people, and even on a Tuesday evening their patio was packed. My birthday was on a Sunday last year, and we had no problem getting a table for 7 inside around 6pm. I actually preferred sitting inside. Something about eating deep dish pizza during the fall inside of a cozy dark restaurant just made the experience even better for me. I've been to Pequod's about three times already over the past few years, and it is definitely one of my favorite pizza's in Chicago. Until last year, I was unaware that Burt's Place was the original before Pequod's that started the caramelized crust. I love the caramelized crust, but it is definitely an acquired taste and some people will claim it just tastes burnt (they don't get it). Comparing this pizza to Pequod's, this one seems much more thinner and less doughy. It might be because we got a large, so the dough was just spread out more thin. I do wish I came here and tried this pizza when Burt was alive because many reviews online claim that the quality has gone down or it just doesn't taste the same. Party of 6 and we had the large table in the middle of the inside room. Very tiny inside with booths and tables. But the outside patio was actively poppin'. Waitress was on top of her game and got drinks and order going quickly. Crispy edge, deep dish pizza that was very good. There was a good ratio of sauce to bread and the toppings were very fresh. Friend had the chicken tenders and the jalepeno poppers. Honestly, the tray of fries as an appetizer was a great decision! We were not rushed along- and allowed to sit and chat after dinner. I went to Pequod's in Chicago a long time ago. I can't remember if I enjoyed it. We decided to come here. Parking is street only. Make sure you read the signs since they can be confusing. Also, they accept any payment except for checks. Do people even bring their checkbooks into restaurants these days? lol. You can dine inside or outside. I believe they have a heated patio outside. We dined inside, it was a shame that we couldn't sit at the booth where Anthony Bourdain's picture is. It was occupied. We ordered cheese curds and a medium sized pizza. For toppings, we chose sausage, mushrooms, and fresh garlic. This is not deep dish pizza, I would say it's more of a pan style. It's not heavy like at Gino's East or Giordano's. It has that famous caramelized crust and that airy dough. The toppings were super fresh. We immediately tasted the garlic. Burt's own special blend of the sausage tasted homemade. If you dine in, they cut it for you. If you take it home, you should already have a pizza cutter in your kitchen. Don't be lazy, it's very inexpensive. The cheese curds were generous and very tasty. Finally got to try Burt's Place and it definitely lived up to the hype. The sauce at Pequod's is still my favorite, but everything else here was excellent. The thicker, buttery pan-style crust and caramelized edges were delicious, and the cheese curds were some of the best I've ever had. The staff was great very friendly and attentive which made the experience even better. Service was quick, and everyone made us feel welcome. The only other tome I get to try out a really famous place is when we have visitirs from out of town. This time, a close family friend from Germany! I decided to take him to Burt's Place because Antony Bourdain himself loved this place! Any place Anthony loves, I am gonna love! And yes, it is by far, the best deep-dish, pan pizza-type pizza that is out of this world! One thing though, call ahead for a reservation! And, it's Cash Only! We enjoyed reading the late Burt's travels and history while we waited for our pizza. Both times we've ordered a pizza and salad for the table which has been plenty for our group of four and just right for a group of six light eaters. We dined out on the patio, enjoying a nice summer breeze and letting the kids mess with the chalk wall as they were less patient waiting. Pizza is definitely worth the wait, which is not as long as other deep dish places. Fresh brews on tap, casual and nice for conversations. My only complaint would be the chairs are not comfortable to sit in for long, and were not wide enough for my mid-size hips. And sometimes outside we got wafts of cigarette smoke. It's been over a decade since I've come to Burt's. I was away when he passed and after the reigns got picked up by...someone else which is why I stayed away. Recently, I stayed nearby so I figured I should finally try it out. While the ordering process is easier, there were some echoes of the old place. I called and it went to voicemail only to say it was full. Online ordering was available for pick-up. I was a nice night so I walked to go pick it up and while the location is the same it got a noticeable and sizable facelift. There's the beer garden and now the original entrance is blocked off. I don't know if the service took a cue from Burt's brusqueness but it certainly seemed like it did. I was one of four hanging around, two seemed to be Doordashers, and another was a solo diner. My order was fortunately ready first and I walked out. The spinach and garlic was good-here's another change: the garlic was no longer minced but with huge chunks that highlighted the spinach. The sausage though was disappointing: it was definitely not as I remembered. I know the new owner said the recipe was taught to him but there's something about the 'taste by flavor approach,' that doesn't translate well. It wasn't just nostalgia goggles either, the others in my group were similarly disappointed with the sausage as well. We have wanted to try Burt's Place for years, yesterday we got our chance. We were in the area and stopped in. It's a small neighborhood pizza shop, with an old school vibe. Had the pleasure of trying Burt's pizza and was pleasantly surprised! We had showed up to the other pizza place in the neighborhood that didn't have seating for another 3 hours, thankfully Burt's was a short walk away and they had immediate seating. They have a nice outdoor area with heaters for the cooler nights, and the indoor area is small but cozy. Food was great! We ordered a deep dish pizza with a ton of toppings, it was so so so good. In all honesty we liked it better than the other neighborhood place, not quite as bready a better balance of the crust, sauce, cheese, and toppings. Service was attentive, food was delicious. Burts place is a super let down. Does not live up to the hype that's for sure. This review is from my experience before and after Burt. The recipe seems to have stayed the same. Sauce bland, sausage bland, and over cooked every time I've been there. Seems to have tasted the same from the first I went when Burt and his wife served me. I'm giving 2 stars for the upgrade inside and outside that the restaurant desperately needed. The service was slow because they cater to the regulars more than they do to anyone else and made it very obvious. In my opinion, I would choose Peqouds and Lefty's kitchen over Burts Place any day! 100 % don't recommend. read more

Finally ordered a pizza last night from Burt's. Had such high hopes. Heard great things and even seen them on TV. Started off with calling to place the order, being placed on hold for 4 minutes and the call disconnected. That should have been a sign. Called back again, placed an order for an extra large with half pepperoni, half cheese. Had my kids pick up the pizza and bring it home. Opened the paper bag, lifted the foil and looked pretty burnt. Figured maybe it was just more of a Detroit style. Nonetheless, surely it would taste good, right? Wrong. Tastes like burnt cardboard. Sauce was flavorless. As a family of pizza lovers, we actually threw out the remaining pieces. That has never happened. Very disappointing. Place should be renamed to Burnt's. read more

Pondering on the review, I read other reviews and I was able to form a few solid thoughts about the place. I've visited twice now. Once like in 2019/2020 and last night we stopped by about 630pm. Both visits I dined in. Service tonight was VERY questionable at the start of the visit. It was 69 degrees and quite chilly so we opted to dine inside and not outside where the patio was still filled. So it took 20 mins or so to get service. Then when the server came she was just ok-2.5/3 rating for her. The star of the show, the pizza, was definitely a 5 star class act for us. We got a 12in sausage/pepperoni and it was DELICIOUS! We actually love the burnt, crisp pepperoni and crust. We gobbled it up quickly and packed up two slices to take home. They also reheated well. I have not been to Burt's and probably 10 years, since he and his wife were the only two running the joint and you had to place your order by telephone the day before and they had nothing but Pizza, literally. Back then it was also only just the main dining room and that was it. Because Pequod's down the block was just announce the best pizza in the country, we couldn't get in. So, we hit old faithful, founded by one of the original founders of pequod's! We were able to get a reservation for exactly the time we wanted. Why wouldn't we do this?? The main dining room has that wonderful, old Northwoods restaurant or somebody's basement in the 70s vibe, and it's perfect for the pizza and the history you're getting. Customer service is very attentive and friendly. Don't expect a black on black uniform with a black apron. Expect nappy t-shirt, blue jeans and gym shoes. And it works just fine. Burt's was packed on a Saturday night with one or two families in the on-deck circle. We had a really nice sangria, nothing fancy, just perfect and it hit the spot fresh, and a Steigl radler. Our family size Caesar salad arrived within 10 minutes of ordering it. Timing was excellent with regards to the pizza arriving probably 30 minutes later when we were finished with the salad. For two people, the 12-in pizza was more than enough. We could have been fine with a 10-in. We ordered a green olive and banana peppers pizza and it was as good as it's ever been, perfect. Delicious. Filling. Not greasy at all. Wonderful crust as always. One of the things that really like here is that everything is so very fresh, homemade. An important thing to note, if you like the spicy tomato sauce at pequod's, don't expect it at burt's. It's sweeter, and it works great. A pizza date isn't cheap anymore, for the food noted above, plus tip of about 20%, it set me back $76. read more

Unfortunately, this time we were disappointed with the food and service We preordered our pizzas to be ready at 6; they didn't come out until 6:30. Absolutely unacceptable. They clearly forgot to place our order until we showed up. The pizza was mediocre, at best. It was a lot of plain bread with little sauce or cheese. Have been to Pequods several times but never Burt's Place. I will say that I think I like Pequods in incomprehensible degree more, but the atmosphere/room at Burt's is less claustrophobic. Typically, when you think of pizza in the Chicagoland area, your mind takes you to renowned places like Giordano's, Pequod's, or even Lou Malnati's. And if you're a native in the area, you've probably seen that just about every single pizza place has a memo that reads "Chicago's Best Pan Pizza", which can actually turn the most timid souls into fearless defenders of civic pride - arguing about which restaurant deserves that anointment. But then you have Burt's Place slowly making its way into the conversation, and rightfully so. The large pizza we ordered, topped with sausage and mushrooms, was incredible. The crust was thick, soft, warm, and undeniably tang. When you cut into the pizza, you'll realize how soft it is, but at times (especially when getting closer to the crust) there's a crackle and a crunch. You'll savor the milky, sharp cheese and the sweetness that comes from the tomato sauce (which, however, this pizza could have used more of). Overall, I thought it to be phenomenal. We finally got to experience Burt's as a cap on an afternoon trip to the suburbs. The place is cozy, with an extremely small dining room (but accessible, with an accessible restroom. The tiny indoors are offset by a lovely and large outdoor patio, with some covered sections and a bar. Its heated during the winter months. The building is on a quiet street and the vibe is very mellow. Service is quite attentive and friendly. Small, affordable wine list, lots of local beers, no booze. Homemade sangria but we didn't try it. Oh, the pizza. Yeah, if you like this style of pizza, deep dish, but not stuffed, with burned cheese on the edges, you'll like it here, Burt's executes it well. The pepperoni was fresh, the mushrooms earthy, the cheese perfectly melted and stringy, and the tomato sauce a nice mixture of sweet and tangy. But the burnt cheese, I just don't get that. However Kelly likes it so she can eat my portions. Overall good but I prefer the Chicago thin crust, cut party style, so I won't return. I saw Anthony Bourdain's segment on Burt's years ago and have wanted to try it ever since. I finally did and enjoyed it very much. It's really a very flavorful deep dish pizza with that crazy delicious caramelized crust you can't find anywhere else. Well, except for Pequod's. No surprise since apparently Burt started Pequod's himself years ago before selling it to work on Burt's. A very relaxed, old school chicago setting with 10 tables in the interior dining room. I loved the over-the-air Chicago rock station with commercials playing overhead. They also have a heated large outdoor patio. The only thing I would order differently next time is to get it with half the dough, something our waiter told us is an option. The pizza here is the best, and we always get what we (and not the restaurant) call the "Julia Special" consisting of pepperoni, garlic, onion and giardinera - highly recommended!! We started coming as a family about 20 years ago, and were even there the night that saveur magazine came to review and photograph the place. After numerous attempts to call in, I finally got thru and was told my sausage pizza was there. Bc I paid in cash and was not up for the return trip for an old pizza, I actually had to ask for a credit for another pizza on another day. When I requested a salad could be added to the order for the next pizza I ordered they said no we only will be refund you the price of the pizza. The large pizza I brought home was filled with just peppers. I wish they would at least offer an additional Something to my order for the mistake to consideration is I'm just gonna go back in another day and hope that I can get through on their phone lines to place an order for a large sausage pizza... Basically the same thing as Pequod's. The big difference is the crust. While Pequod's crust is very airy and crunchy, Burt's crust has less rise. I really liked it, but it was probably thicker than it needed to be. It loses one star because the carmelized crust was straight-up burnt. I love Pequod's outer ring of crispy cheese, Burt's edges were charred to tastelessness. I was bummed about that. Still, Burt's was a tasty treat. Haven't been to Burt's since 2012?? Coincidentally that was when Bourdain visited as well?? I recall being greeted by Burt's wife and I even saw Burt Katz himself, in the dining area. For those of you who are not familiar with our deep dish history - Burt opened long standing Gulliver's on Howard (just closed a few months ago) and he used to own Pequod's (the original is just one street over from here). Pequod's has been ranked number 1 in the Chicagoland area for numerous years. In fact, the very first slice of deep dish that I ever had, as an immigrant to this country, was from Gulliver's. My mind was blown ever since. Flash forward to present time, the current owners were trained by Burt and it was high time that I made it back, an incomprehensible 10 years later - IKR. So on this Friday night, the onion rings were good but I was expecting a bigger serving. However, the cheese curds were overly generous, will get that again. The deep dish pizza was solid, it was half sausage and half mushroom. Similar to Pequod's , minus the carmelized burnt cheese edges. The solo server was doing the best she could, reminded me of Rick Ross' song, because she was definitely hustling to keep up. So grateful to be 5 minutes from the deep dish heavy hitters - Burt's, Pequod's (the original location), Lou's (the very first Lou's) and Giordano's on Dempster. read more

I had to try this place because hello its PIZZA! Lol Kidding aside its on the Top 10 Deep Dish Pizza place in Chicago. A bit similar to Pequods. Its deep dish pizza has a caramelized crust. Their small is enough for 2 ans you have a ton of toppings to choose from. I also ordered their sampler which you can choose 3 items in the appetizer list. I chose Mozzarella sticks, mac n cheese bites , and onion rings. Everything was perfect and service was great. They do have a wine and beer selection. Not the original, but the better version of Pequods - the history is complicated, but so was Burt. The better version of deep dish - with the caramelized crust. Service is better with a little more staff, easy parking on the street and one person working the Door/takeout orders/busing and a waitress. Good stuff.
