I'm in Nacogdoches on business fairly often. I have eaten at Butcher Boy's on a couple of occasions. The burgers are good, really good actually. The meat is cooked to perfection with a little grilled crispness around the edges. It is cooked to order and always taste fresh. They truly have a really good hamburger/cheeseburger. On the other hand, I think their sliced brisket is average. Obviously, Texas is known for it's sliced brisket and the competition is steep and comparison is inevitable. I thought the meat was simply okay and lacked flavor. In my opinion, if you have to bathe your brisket in sauce, you may need to rethink your recipe. The potato salad and beans were really good but I'm not coming here just for the sides. Bottom line - Fantastic burgers. I highly recommend them. BBQ is average at best. I'll be back but I'll stick to the burgers. Bon appétit. read more

PCS here 6 months ago and I have no idea why it took us so long to check this place out! Heard their commercial on the radio countless times and finally decided to dive in when the craving for a BBQ loaded potato was too strong to ignore. BBQ is usually not my first choice - ever, so to be motivated to post a review about this place, you know it knocked me out of my boots. The gal at the front counter where you order will tell you they are known for their burgers, which the spouse got, but I only had one mission in mind coming here. The baked potato comes in a nice little boat you can take home. Good thing too, because it's way more than you'll be able to eat in one sitting. The BBQ is sweet style with plenty of sauce. Piping hot 'tator melting the toppings on top into a delicious spread. I had to wait for it to cool after burning my mouth with the first bite. I can't wait to eat the rest later! Spouse got the Sour Cream burger. Why... why on this beautiful land of America have I never thought of this?! Came with sautéed mushrooms, a nice size patty with crispy edges and tad dry meat, FRESH grated real cheese, bacon and sour cream. The bun was soft, buttery delicious fresh bread. Let me break this down for you. My spouse is called "boss sauce" - this man can not eat a burger, let alone any piece of meat without all. the. sauce. This man didn't put a single condiment on this burger. I got a bite and it knocked my socks off. Such a genius burger idea! The burger is more than enough to fill you up - no sides needed. They are not speedy by any means. Do not come if you are in a hurry to be in and out, The owner himself still works there. Talks to the customers individually, greets his regulars by name and walked a guy's catering order to his car for him while he juggled his two children in tow. Talk about caring for the customer! They have coconut and chocolate pies in a cooler along with a cheese ball (definitely grabbing that for my next office party). They sell sausages, Wright bacon and ribeye steaks to go home and cook yourself. If I could change anything - the southern girl would die for them to sell some banana pudding to go with this heavily loaded potato. The place was packed for dinner with families, couples and a few large groups all varying age groups. This place appeases to all the generations. Looking for somewhere to stop on our road trip. Easy on and off the freeway and great food and service

This started off being a 5-star review based on my first visit, while staying the weekend in Nacogdoches. I chose the chicken fried steak because it'd been several years since I'd had a good one. Well, this one was out-freakin'-standing! If you've heard the term, "fork-tender," you can apply that to this only you can use a PLASTIC fork to do it - it was that tender! The gravy was thick and the perfect accompaniment. There was a slight misunderstanding on the sides. I wanted fries and okra. What I got was a LOT of okra. I didn't mind the mix up because the okra was crispy and tasty so I'm glad there was plenty of it. I got a chance to sample some of the sausage they make there. EXCELLENT flavors from their regular, sage-based sausage. But, you also need to try and buy their garlic sausage. WOW! The disappointment (hence the dropped star) came the next day when I came back to try their barbecue plate. It features brisket and their signature sausage. I asked to have the brisket "cut from the point (marbled end)." Any other BBQ places I've been to knows what that means. These folks did not. I explained, but I still got slices cut from the flat (lean end). The consolation was the plate was overflowing with brisket and sausage. It was a thing of beauty! The sausage, as remembered, was delicious! I would've settled for a plateful of that. The brisket, sadly, was underwhelming at best. It tasted more like roasted beef than smoked brisket. There was NO smoke flavor at all - not even a smoke ring to reassure you that that was how it was made. The whole plate was swimming in sauce which is a tell-tale that the meat lacks either the moisture or the flavor to stand on its own. If the experiences had been reversed, I doubt I would've come back for that awesome chicken fried steak. I'm glad it worked out the way it did. Hopefully, there's a correction in the future. In the meantime, I know what to order in the future. read more

The first time we went there, we got the burgers, we were told they had the best burgers in town, WRONG. They were so greasy you couldn't keep them on the bun. The second time, the wife and I tried the Bbq brisket sandwiches, very dry, no sauce on them. Won't be eating those again. The third time I got the burger again, not as greasy, but way overcooked, the wife got a steak, she asked for medium rare. It was so over cooked, her baked potato was not warm at all either. So, we have marked that place off out list of places to eat. read more

I had waited to come here for over a year with my husband because I wasn't going to order burgers then tote them 1.5 hrs home for dinner. The hospitality was amazing-- we met the owner-- and several locals who were willing to share stories and more while we waited and ate. The burgers are huge and tasty. The bacon is made in house and amazing. I wouldn't order bacon regularly on a burger but it was worth it here. The sides were a bit lack lustre and maybe it was all the hype and lead up to the burger but it's mostly a local favourite dive. Don't hate me I live in Texas but Whataburger gives me weird 'fast food' burps and you can't get rid of the smell in your car or home. But the real food made at I'll admit a greasy spoon which cost the same is worth the stop, the time, and your patronage. read more

I just had the best burger I've ever had in my life. It was huge but dry or tough. It was juicy and delicious with all of the homestyle toppings- lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, onions, tomatoes. The bun was fresh. The service was fantastic. I knew we had found a gem when we arrived to a full parking lot. There was a line out the door, but we ordered and were served very quickly. Have been to Butcher Boy's about five times and have always ordered a burger combo. The burgers and fries are consistently very good and fresh. Went today and ordered a double bacon burger combo to go. The burger was hot, fresh and very large. It might be too big for somebody who needs to go back to work and sit at desk. Might need a nap! The fries were hot, fresh and a large size portion. The tea was fresh brewed. No waitress service. The order and prep time is relatively fast even when the line is out the door. I finally made it here again after about a 20 year hiatus. How is that even possible for The Burger Guy, if the burgers are so good? Very good question, but simple answer, I don't live anywhere Nac these days. I ordered the bacon burger combo for $9.75. They were giving away chocolate covered strawberries for every woman on Valentines day weekend. They have many awards on the wall for best burger, best baked potato and best chicken fried steak. Started in 1977, and I figure any restaurant that began the year I was born and still in business must be pretty good and doing something right. The burger itself is about 1/2 lb, and the meat is just falling apart. I told them medium rare when they asked how I wanted it cooked, and they got it right....unlike the other burger place I had visited earlier in the day. The beef just has that fresh, meat market taste, which is hard to describe. As far as the fries, well they are just pre-seasoned frozen fries with texture. I didnt care for them and I'll ate a few. The owner/manager came to our table asking if everything was okay, which is always nice to have. read more

The 4 star rating was misleading. I ordered the brisket and sausage plate. The meat and sausage looked and tasted like it was cooked yesterday and reheated in the microwave. They slathered both meals in bbq without asking in what I assume was an attempt to add some flavor. The brisket was tough and dry, the sausage looked way overcooked but was surprisingly spicy. We were very disappointed in this visit. There was no social distancing with the tables, no one came out and clean the tables between patrons, no one in Forest wearing the mask into the restaurant.
