So, this is a spacious, relatively spare buffet/cafeteria style eating place. You have a good selection of items, that range from REALLY good (the vegetables including cooked cabbage, collard greens, carrots NOT crusted in brown sugar), to pretty good. I had the meatloaf, it was ok, and the cheese enchiladas, which have a GREAT sauce to them, but were pretty thin on the filling. That may be an inconsistent result, I only had one, but the sauce was so good I sure wished I had more filling in it. You can eat ALL you want, they also had deserts that I didn't partake of as I had business to do after lunch and didn't want to get lethargic as deserts sometimes do to me at lunch, but they looked good. The salad bar was pretty basic but the leafy green was Romaine and very fresh. What will get you is the price. It's @ $14.00 per person. To me considering especially how little I had, that I had to serve myself, and the school cafeteria style tables and seating, that seemed a little steep. A cafeteria of course charges by item on any pass you make so maybe it's a decent deal, if you're really hungry. The food is good and it's locally owned. We eat there 3-4 times a year but are never disappointed. They grind, cut, chop, etc all their patties, French fries and sweet potato fries. Haven't heard a complaint about them from the locals. read more

Love this place! Their food is delicious and its fair pricing. I definitely recommend this place. They also have a buffet section thats seperate from the carryout section. Their hot dogs are beyond the size of a normal hand and its super cheap too! Our burger came with fries and a drink for 3.99! What a deal right?! It also came with a chip or cookie. Okay, I'm going to start off by saying this: the ONLY saving grace for this place from my recent first time purchase was the chicken strips and the friendly cashier. That is it. I have been hesitant to try Mr. Rays ever since it was established and now I see why. It is exactly what I expected. Mashed potatoes from a bag, gravy from a bag, Mac and cheese mediocre, rolls from a box, and the interior needs a lot of work. Although the Mac and cheese is creamy, it lacks flavor and that "wow factor". The roll is bleh. Nothing special. Mashed potatoes were most likely instant. HOWEVER, the chicken strips (although greasy) were really delicious! Cooked perfectly, not very much batter, great flavor. The cashier was super friendly explaining how everything worked (since it was my first time and I had no clue how I needed to get my food...which will bring me to my next issue later), and the lady behind the hot plate area was nice and friendly about getting me extra gravy. Staff seemed pretty nice and overall a friendly group. Dessert table looked pretty good, didn't purchase any dessert but it had a great LOOK about it. Nothing special, just simply made basic desserts like cakes and pies. I'm hoping that my next visit (probably dine-in this time) will change my rating from a 3 to a higher number. Went for lunch one day and was sent on a wild goose chase it seemed! I didn't want to do the buffet, I just wanted the burger deal and couldn't get a straight answer on how to dine in and get it-I didn't care it was more expensive! But everywhere we were sent (oh, you go over there, this is to go only-get there and -oh, you need to go back there-get back there and -oh you need to go next door to get the burger deal), the people were very nice. Finally talked to someone who said, yes, you can get a burger and fries-it is just a different price. Worth it because it's probably the best cheeseburger I've ever eaten in Lufkin!! Place was packed at lunch too but even after all the confusion, we were in and out within an hour. read more

Ya'll... this place is awesome!!!! We went on a Friday for lunch they had fried fish filets that were jumbo sized (I could only eat 2!!) fried shrimp , gumbo , you name it !!!! I believe it's 10.99 and comes with your soda. I also got dessert and (sorry grandma) that was the best buttermilk pie I've eaten ever!!!! We stopped for the $3.99 special we had gotten last visit, but were hungry enough we decided to go for the $10.99 lunch buffet which is in a very big side room. Very nice selection of grilled & fried foods. Good sized salad/fruit bar & nice sized dessert bar with pies, cakes & soft serve. Drink comes with the meal. Mr. Ray's Food Court is a decent place to eat. I would say it caters towards a more mature crowd. The food in my opinion can be bland at times. It is definitely a country style buffet. That being said, if you step into the Sub shop (also Mr. Ray's) you will be pleasantly surprised. Bar none the best bang for your buck, Sub, chips, drink and cookie for less then the chain places. The portions are impressive to say the least. The flavors are great. I will say you should make sure you reiterate your preferences on your sandwich. Best burger in Lufkin. Priced right. My meat was generous and carmelized on the outside yet juicy on the inside. Gave it the squeeze test that shows nobody smashed it on the grill. Juices galore. I ate at Mr. Rays last week for the first time. The fresh vegetables ( I love what I call soul veggies mustard , turnip greens,cabbage cornbread corn mash taters; food I remember eating as a youngster in the '50's off my relatives various farms back then)... I'd be remiss; If I didn't rave about the "homemade from scratch " Coconut cream pie... crust was off the chain and the pie was still warm..now that's hard to find in a restaurant in this day and time of rush, rush buy in bulk commercialized dining...
