After years, they are still as good as I remember. I can't believe this place doesn't have more reviews because it's been around for so long. For my sister and me, Butch's was a fourth of July tradition. We would share a large grinder and potato salad, eat while sitting on the hood of her car in the parking lot of what was once an Alpha-Beta, and watch Mount Rubidoux catch on fire. I hadn't been in years, because I'm usually only in Riverside on holidays, but I went to visit family for my birthday and made it a point to stop in. I had an small (8" I think) salami grinder, and it was quite tasty. Matt had a large (12") capicola, he liked his also. To me, this is how grinders should be served: provolone cheese (substitution is extra) and an oil dressing instead of mayonnaise. They have a variety of beverages in their cooler. I had a decent bottle of root beer, but they had sports drinks and that sort of thing as well. They even sell beer to go. I suppose it's probably a different sort of license for consumption on the premises. I don't doubt for a second that it gets crowded during the week at lunch time, but we stopped in around 7 pm on a Saturday and we only saw a few other customers ordering sandwiches to go. So if you are looking to check this place out without fighting crowds, try coming in the evening. read more

The day my husband introduced me to Butch's was a very good day. I love nothing more than a well made, quality sandwich. Butch's is small, and mom-and-pop feeling inside, and I love it! The menu is simple, like any classic deli/sandwich spot. My favorite is turkey on sourdough. The bread is big and thick so you get a very decent sized sandwich. They are generous with the fillings too, I have never had a thin, tiny sandwich here. I also love the selection of sodas in the coolers. Its definitely a Riverside classic for sure. read more

I just moved in across the street and was excited to have a grinder shop Walking distance... Boy was I disappointed. I have been there twice and I Don't believe a third time will happen any time soon. My last visit was terrible, I was greeted with "what do you want" Okay, I'll have a roast beef grinder. I received a roast beef sandwich (not on a flaky grinder roll but on sliced bread) I told her that's not what I wanted. I had this place bookmarked damned near forever, and finally I found some time for my husband and I to check it out. I had recently taken him to D'Elias for his first time, so he had something local to compare it to. I had a small tuna grinder and he had ham. He also ordered the pasta salad because he must not have looked at it first. (I thought it looked pretty unappealing. He said it tasted that way, too.) Prices were high for the quality because the food simply wasn't good. Eating in was a mistake - what a hole. We left assuming that this place is a front for something, because that seems like the only way it has been in business so long and people talk so lovingly about it. Good sandwiches and a cozy spot. Don't eat inside because the people ordering will be standing on top of you. The setup is kind of wack and the women working there all seem to have a chip on their shoulders. They all act like they got called in on thier day off. Anyway, take your sandwich outside and enjoy. Never heard of this place until my sisters bf introduced me. From the looks of the outside i would not think to stop or even give it a try. The only sub place in riverside i was loyal to was Deliahs(which is great but they are both in a league of their own! . I ordered the 6 inch cappicola and genoa salami sub combo which came with a drink and chips for under $7! How great is that! BUTCH's ALL THE WAY! BEST SANDWICH SPOT IN THE I.E. - Hands Down!! I've been going there for about 3 years now. It's near downtown Riverside, close to RCC. Small little tiny spot that sits about 15-20 ppl inside. Most people get their food to-go or eat it outdoors on the shaded bench. The service is always great, friendly people and quick. i've never waited more than 10 minutes for my food. Everything is fresh. Sandwiches are to die for. I dont know what they put in those things, but they are really good. I'm a sucker for the full size turkey sandwich. Its about 15 minute drive from my house... i'd gladly make that drive anyday rather than eating at subway which is across the street from me. Only thing i dislike about Butch's is that they charge like 50cents to use your debit/credit card. Whatever, not that big of a deal... it add's up if you go there a lot and use your debit/credit card. Other than that. I recommend you try that place. I've taken 4 or 5 friends there in the past, and they all go back to eat there on their own. I ran into a friend there once and I brought him there for his first time at Butch's. read more

A business meeting I attended brought sandwiches from Butch's in for lunch. It was love at first bite. Their turkey/avocado/bacon on squaw bread is beyond delicious. Prices are a little high for a sandwich shop IMHO, but the sandwiches are also pretty large and they are good quality. After seeking this place out on my own (just had to have that sandwich again!), I discovered it's located in what appears to be in an old gas station. I kinda dig it. Gives it more personality or something. Nice shaded picnic tables out front. My all-time favorite grinder shop is Jersey's Mikes in Lake Forest, but this place is a very close second. read more

The pastrami here is so good! Best in Riverside. I haven't tried any of the other sandwiches yet because I just love the pastrami but the other ones look pretty good too so I'll eventually try them out. A gem in the desert of Riverside. My husband and I only get the turkey and avocado sandwiches to go and we are obsessed. Whenever we visit his dad in Riverside, we come here. They have the softest squaw bread for this sandwich and they will not tell anyone where they get it from. It's delivered fresh every morning. The portion is big and I usually eat it in two sittings. It's sat overnight in my fridge and been just as good the next day! I can't speak for dining in, drink or chip prices, or the service, but I know this is the best sandwich. read more

My family loves this place. I grew up on Butch's Grinders in Fontana many years ago when I was a kid. It closed when I was in my twenties and honesty everyone mourned when that happened, (it's a Fontana thing). Just found out there's one in Riverside and of course I had to go try it for myself. It was like my childhood had return from the past. Absolutely the same taste as before just like I remember. We come here 1-2 times a week now.
