I have been coming here for years with no complaints. But the old rude women was nasty instead of greeting us she asked if we were the three page order(which it wasn't a 3 page order), let that go. Sat down and waited she then proceeded to tell her employees your order from hell is here - then once we were called to the counter she proceeded to chastise us and tell us the next time we order a number of sandwiches we need to give her the names of each person ordering a sandwich as if we don't know who ordered what and then yelled at the young man who made our order for not writing the ticket how she liked. She then asked what else do you guys want... Like excuse me I am a paying customer if I didn't want to add something I would but I don't. I typically stop here on weekends after a Mt. Rubidoux run. I'm usually sweaty and probably smell poorly, so I do my best to keep my distance from the innocent lunch-goers trying to enjoy their food. There's one reason I keep coming back: Their sandwiches are delicious. I mean-- don't get me wrong-- in a way they're kind of nothing special: Deli meat, basic veggies, regular sandwich condiments, etc. But everything tastes fresh, has flavor, and is just GOOD. Most of all, I love their bread. I've had their squaw a few times, and that is good and all, but I LOVE their white (Italian?) loaves used for the subs... or... hoagies... or... grinders... or whatever you want to call them-- the bread is just so soft and fresh and tasty. I usually get the turkey and avocado (although I have tried a handful of other combos), and while the flavors from the meats and veggies were good-- that bread really is the star. Working near Downtown, I am often on the lookout for lunch spots that I can grab a tasty, healthy bite accompanied by a pleasant and relaxed mid-day atmosphere. Unfortunately, this is not the place for that. While I appreciate their outdoor seating, the views of nearby past-their-prime apartment complexes and quiet Tequesquite parking lots just don't really compare to anything available along the Main Street Mall. And unfortunately, it's not much better inside. The place seems to have filled some sort of hallowed out gas station, and has managed to retain much of that "convenience-store" charm, complete with racks full of chips, and refrigerators stocked full of sodas and-- yes-- six packs of beer (to-go only, of course). Not that there's anything "wrong" with this... it's just not my idea of a pleasant place to relax for lunch. It also doesn't help that their lunch rush is busy enough that the line spills into the few available indoor seats, instantly eliminating any sense of privacy you may have hoped for in your meal. But all of this nitpicking aside, I'm still happy to give them my money for a great sandwich on a near-weekly basis. It's probably not the healthiest lunch I can grab, but after a few miles on Rubidoux, I feel like I've earned a delicious, filling treat-- and it's kind of hard to beat Butch's when it comes to that. read more

I had asked a couple of people I work with for a decent sandwich shop to get a pastrami sando. So we went here and I was somewhat disappointed. The pastrami was tasty enough, but there was hardly any of it. I am used to the LA area sando shops where they pile it on and the bread is soaked in juice. I came here yesterday for the first time and the food is delicious!!! I will say this though, the person taking the orders and such needs some training in customer service, she sounds rude and bored. I don't think she really is like that but it didn't seem like it to me. The phone etiquette is pretty rude from the two times I've called, today I walked in for a simple pick up again and I was blown off, a customer came in after me and was attended before me... so there's that. Went here yesterday. The sandwiches were bland and tasteless. The bread was dry and crumbly. I ordered both of my sandwiches with salt, pepper, oil and vinegar. I guess there is a scarcity of those ingredients since they did not end up on my sandwich. The price of 24.00 for 2 sandwiches is high and not worth the price. While waiting for my order in the empty dining area I could see under the counter and refrigerator case where salads and desserts are kept. The area is in desperate need of cleaning. The grinders were ok. The pastrami 12 inch sandwich could have had more meat. The roast beef and turkey was also lite on meat. We got two sandwiches, bad of chips, macaroni salad and two drinks for $27. Next time we will go to jersey mikes for more meat for less money. I would have loved to give them 5 stars because I absolutely love their sandwiches! They are delicious! The 2 stars that I took off were because the moment My Nephew and I walked in today the 2 employees, a young Male and young Female seemed to glare at us in such an unfriendly way. I even did a double take and looked at them again only to get the same look. No Smile, no friendly hello, no greeting whatsoever. They almost look irritated that they have more customers to take orders from. As a small business owner myself I would never tolerate a greeting (or lack of) like that from my employees to my customers. I would LOVE to leave a nice tip but why if they aren't even friendly? Smile! Be friendly and say hello to your customers, believe me, it will go a long way! This is the second time I experienced this. 3 months ago my Daughter and I got the same cold shoulder when we went in. My 14 Daughter couldn't believe it, she said, "Wow, they were so rude!' Amazing sandwiches but a sneaky company with terrible customer service. I called to order a roast beef sandwich. I listed the ingredients and then asked if it comes with cheese. He replies "yes provolone" and I ask to switch it to cheddar instead. He said it will be an upcharge! For what? If I wanted tomorrow instead of pickles would I pay more? Or mustard instead of mark?!?! It's swapping cheese for cheese! Then he argued with me like I was so rude to not want to pay the sneak upcharge! Never will I order from them again! This used to be one of the best sandwich shops in town. Sadly it is now a shell of what it once was. My most recent visit will definitely be my last visit. I've rarely encountered such an incompetent and unfriendly staff in any food establishment in my life. Not only were they unfriendly they were sloooooooow. Initially it took 34 minutes for two 8" sandwiches and we were one of only two other patrons when we arrived and the others had already ordered. It didn't take long to see the other guests were frustrated with their wait as well. While two people were making sandwiches three other people inefficiently lolligagged around behind the counter. After finally receiving our food we left and because we were now starving we opened our sandwiches immediately to find one of them was plain and obviously wasn't ours. We had to go back in and when we explained the problem we were treated as if it was our fault. To make matters worse they quickly made a new sandwich which was exactly like the one I just returned. At this point I should have asked for a refund and left but I stuck it out. After telling them what sandwich I wanted a third time I finally got my food. 47 minutes later I left for the final time. The only reason I give this 2 stars instead of 1 was because the sandwiches were halfway decent. Unfortunately putting up with that kind of service wouldn't have been worth it even if the food was free. Hopefully they turn this current staff over really soon or I wouldn't count on Butch's being around much longer. read more

I moved away from Riverside 8 years ago, but any time I visit I make it a point to come here, and they never disappoint. They have a grinder or sandwich for every taste. My favorite is the turkey on squaw. They pile on the turkey, which is moist and sliced perfectly, add some provolone, shredded lettuce (the ONLY way lettuce should be!!), some tomato, thinly sliced onion, pickle, and mayo. Seriously delish. Looking for a hot sandwich? You can't beat the pastrami grinder with spicy peppercinis. I have never seen Butch's not crowded, but they move through the line quickly and they get you sandwiches out fairly quickly. There are a few tables inside, but I prefer to eat on the outside covered patio. Butch's sandwiches are generously proportioned, and well worth the $6-$9 price tag. read more

I have been coming here for some years now, I normally get the Italian sub on wheat bread two types of meat , all the fixings. ..but on this day I went with the egg salad sub which is also good and fresh on wheat roll. I was told that at times they have to make egg salad up to three times a day, I have been back since and gotten it again. The service is very friendly and helpful, will take the time to answer any questions on the menu, they do make some good Chile beans as well, inside dinner along with tables outside in the shade. It was my first time coming here. I ordered a 6" roast beef sandwich loaded with everything on French bread. It was pretty good and went well with the chips and soda that I got to go along with it.
