Convenient place to grab a sandwich when you're starving. Their roast beef is great, lots of lettuce. I forgot to tell them to hold the onions but that's my bad. Service is good, I came after the lunch rush so it was pretty easy. Prices were fairly reasonable. read more

I would say just ok. Sandwich was pretty basic but did the job, service was just ok, place was moderately clean but dated. The transients hanging around asking for money did not help the atmosphere. Great sandwiches! I won't eat a sandwich from anywhere else cuz they are always so amazing and tasty ! I do have one complaint and it's with a guy who works there with a mustache.... Everytime I've encountered him he's really rude. Makes me feel stupid when I call to order and he makes it seem likes it's a problem or something. Just need some better customer service! All the other guys I have delt with were polite , but not that one. Also I was ordering on the phone and I swear I heard him call me a bitch when he put the phone down. .... If I could give a zero star rating I would. Ordered 2 Capicola sandwiches and a turkey avocado. Brought them to work and started digging in. Got half way through the Capicola only to find a pubic hair mixed in with the lettuce. When I called them to complain there was no offer for a refund just an "oh, sorry. I'll check the lettuce". Terrible, disgusting and unsanitary. Never again will I recommend this establishment. read more

I work at a hospital right across the street from there. My friend picked up the food and told me the lil old lady didn't know the calorie intake. So I decided to call when my friend returned with the food. So I spoke with a young man & he didn't know. So then I asked to speak to the manager and they put her on the phone I politely asked what her name was and she said her name was Heidi. So then I asked Heidi what the caloric intake of the turkey bacon avocado on squaw bread was and she said she didn't know. I asked "Aren't you suppose to provide that information. She said "no because we are a small business". Then I said that may not be true I'm calling the state. Heidi then said "I'm sorry you're so unhealthy". I then said excuse me you're rude. You will definitely being hearing from the state. I've never been spoken to rudely by a business large or small. I did not argue with nor did I have a bad tone with her. Great sandwiches but horrible customer service I had the pleasure of being "dealt with" by an employee by the name of Danielle. As I walked in I was greeted with a note pad and her half way looking at me along with holding a conversation with a fellow employee as I picked up my already phoned in order she rudely told me my total and set my change on the counter and finished her convo with the other girl I stated to have a good day and neither one even turn their heads. Customer service is a big thing with me and more important than a cheese sandwich they need some classes on service and soon!!!! read more

People are lying if they say this place has the best sandwiches in the I.E. Let's be honest people. Standard airy grinder bread with a single thickness of thin sliced meat with a boatload of shredded iceburg makes NOT a great or even mediocre sandwich. I have been subjected to this place many-o-time for free-lunch Friday at work and I have never finished a sandwich due to it's sadness. This past Friday I thought I was smart and ordered the extra meat on a roast beef and had to laugh at what they considered EXTRA. Sadly only 1/4 of that sandwich was eaten. They don't used quality meat and they hardly use any of that which they do use. No discernible flavor at all. I take no issue with their staff but please people, get out and have a real sandwich before you mis-guide another poor hungry soul. read more

Still,after all these years, Butch's grinders is still the best!!! My brother and sister first brought me here when I was 15 years old. We had just finished skating at the Riverside Roller Rink that was next to Butch's grinders. We had a choice of eating at Naugles Burgers, which was just a block away on the corner of 14th and Brockton but my sister wanted a grinder. So, we literally just walked over and stood in line with others who had the same hankering. And, let me tell you, it was worth the wait! I'm always asked for great places to eat in Riverside, since I'm born and bred here.....anything/anywhere from Mexican, to Italian, to sandwiches and when I'm asked about the latter......I say BUTCH'S!!!!!! i think most of you guys are more in love with the fact that this is a small/old sandwich shop than how the actual sandwich tastes. this is as generic as it can be. the shop is small. the sandwiches are boring. ordered a turkey grinder. the bread was hard, vegetables were plain, the turkey was just plain turkey nothing special. maybe its a step above subway because its a "small family shop" for the price i wont be coming back. $$ read more

This place is pretty decent, local, with good hours. I do have a few gripes. I ordered the vegetarian and asked to have it toasted and they said they don't do that. Then it was brought to my attention that avocados are not on the sandwich and I had to pay $1.55 extra to add it on. I guess I am just a spoiled Californian who assumes that avocado is always on a vegetarian sandwich (in California at least). I got it on squaw since I could not toast my originally picked out sourdough bread, but it was still delicious. The portions are very large and generous. They sell beer for take out only, also. It's kind of a mix between a gas station and a sandwich shop. It seems like this business has been hit hard financially since tomatoes are also an "extra" add-on item for the meat sandwiches, I am assuming (I got tomatoes on mine and did not add on), due to the rising price of tomatoes (their words, not mine). Went here today after climbing Mt. Rubidoux. Didn't know what to expect. Was pleasantly surprised. I figured since I walked up Mt. Rubidoux I could get something other than just turkey. I ordered a small (8 inch) dry salami sandwich. It had salami, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, provolone cheese, oil, and salt & pepper. It was so freaking good! They have a big selection of chips to chose from. The staff is really friendly. It is really small inside with limited seating. We got there at 11:30. When we got there we were the only ones there. By the time we were done all the tables were taken & people were still ordering & standing by the door. I would definitely recommend this place. It's a nice change from your typical sandwich chain. I love Butch's grinders, and I don't know about the rest of you, but this brings back memories from when I was a kid and we would get grinders and watch the fireworks on 4th of July. I had one of the best grinders the other day, my husband got a capicola grinder with avacado (which is a bummer that it costs extra to add). The squaw bread is delicious to have any sandwich on. I do wish they had out door seating or more seating in general though (the lunch rush is a RUSH of people with hardly even standing room). All in all I love the food, just wish it was a dollar less expensive and they had better places to sit. read more

First of all, the sandwich was very good. No issues with taste at all but I had to take off one star for the fact that they didn't wear gloves. I didn't notice until I was leaving. Due to this, I probably won't be back. $10.50 for half a sandwich combo is a little pricey for me as well. Customer service and food is very very good here though. read more

Rubidoux hike I find myself driving down Brockton and I see Tequesquite and I heard him a calling it was all the fond memories rushing back at me. We'd never heard of this place until it was recommended by a friend, a native of Riverside who's been going there for years. We each ordered a small grinder with capicola, Genoa salami and provolone -- very good, and everything was really fresh; the roll was soft but dense and substantial. I do wish they had hot chopped cherry peppers available to add to the sandwich -- maybe that's an East Coast thing. We're already looking forward to our next visit to try some of the other sandwiches on the menu. read more

People must not really know what five star or four-star restaurant quality is. This place does not deserve it's high rating. This place is extremely overrated. I find that I can make the sandwiches at home and perhaps even better. They don't really offer something that makes them unique. And honestly rather go to Subway or Quiznos there ever come back here again. The sandwiches are just subpar and anybody saying that they are amazing is probably just lazy to go home and make the same subpar sandwich.
