It is your typical watering hole for locals And decent food served both at the bar and in the restaurant. Other than the Reuben rolls, it wouldn't be a place I would be able to say to a friend, " oh you should go there and try this and that"! They have a decent selection of food to pick from. The temperature of the food is usually lukewarm, but tolerable. The staffing though, the seasoned staff will definitely take care of you. On the other hand, it's hard to complain because those seasoned staff member are so nice. You almost feel guilty when they're running around giving good service. Now that I will give an A+ rating. Met a friend for lunch today and this was my first time coming to the Butler Inn. They have seating on the main level and upstairs. I opted to go upstairs this time around as it seemed pretty full downstairs. Our server was prompt and courteous. My friend was going to be late so I got the Reuben Rolls as an appetizer. I got more cheese than Rueben filling but I wasn't mad about it. I then went for the Ton-of-Fun burger. Definitely larger than I had anticipated, had to take off the tomatoes and lettuce to make it manageable. I upgraded to the fries as well. The burger was tasty, juicy and the bacon was a nice addition. The only condiments on the table are ketchup and nothing comes on the burger so if you want additional items, you'll have to ask for it. My friend got the buffalo chicken wrap and seemed to enjoy it. Being my first time, I had no expectations. I will say that if you are looking for gourmet, this won't be your place. But for good grill/tavern type food, you've come to the right spot. The menu did get an overhaul from what apparently was the old 6 page menu. Still a ton of options to choose from, so if you don't find something that will work for you perhaps you just aren't that hungry! LOL. Give them a try if you are in the area. I love this place. It has supper club without being a supper club. Every time I have visited there seems to be some kind of event. This time there was a packers game and lots of giveaways. Good energy all around! We got some French onion soup that was delicious and cheesey. I also ordered broasted chicken for the first time in YEARS and it was fantastic. Have been here twice now on a Friday for their fish fry. The first time I tried the perch upon my husband's urging. He ended up getting the parmesan crusted walleye and ended up profusely apologizing the entire meal for urging me to change my order from the same thing. So I wisened up on our return and ordered the parmesan crusted walleye. It is totally their standout piece. Everything else about the meal was just fine. We ordered the onion rings, which were like the haystack pile and were great until the very bottom which was too greasy to finish. The new england clam chowder was a nice start to the meal as well. I got mine with the rice pilaf and it was pretty flavorless, but the piece of walleye is huge so I didn't need/want to eat the rice. You also have the option to choose french fries or potato pancakes. The fries aren't that great either. As with most places, it comes with rye bread; which I don't like so that's lost on me. Also, wonder if it's sort of a towny place, because it's been packed both times we visited. The bar area is packed and it's odd entering through a side door to fight your way to the hostess station. Pretty fantastic tbh. I was surprised that this place has such low reviews. I've been coming here for years and their food in excellent. I tried their broasted chicken the other day and it was some of the best I've ever had. Very crispy coating, tasted fresh, and the chicken was not dry or over cooked which seems to plague a lot of other restaurants when they try to do broasted or fried chicken. We also ordered the eggplant appetizer and it was also absolutely fantastic. Service was top notch as well. No complaints on that department. My only complaint was cleanliness. The menus that were handed to us has seen way better days. They were gross and ratty and should have been replaced years ago. Other than that, I highly recommend this place. read more

Sorry for the long post, but I must share. Ironically, on their "Customer Appreciation Night" I Just had a traumatizing experience at The Butler Inn. The manager and an older dark haired waitress were rude and unprofessional. We asked if there was a table for seven. They responded "no, we're full" and told us to leave. Since we had been patronizing this establishment for years (Company Parties, staff events, we had even rented out the entire upstairs on occasion for group events) we thought nothing of the the rude comments from the waitress. Our group patiently waited approximately 30 minutes for a table to open. Once seated, we were met with additional unprofessional behaviors that came from the on duty manager. The manager told us we (a group of professionals African Americans) were a "pain in the ass every time we come" because we have so many people in our party. Understand, the entire place was full because it was "Customer Appreciation Night". We didn't know about the promotion. We were just a group of friends visiting an establishment during the holiday break. Because we were offended and did not understand why we were facing these micro aggressions, I told them we were leaving and she said "Good." When we stood up, an older white man taunted us and said, "Bye! Get the f##k out." Very uncomfortable and unfortunate. Shout out to Krissy (Waitress that has served our group on several occasions) for apologizing for her manager's rude behaviors. She said that she was sorry that we were treated so badly. I am so glad that Butler Inn is back open for business. Before the health crisis, co-workers and I used to come here at least once a month for the Friday fish for lunch, as it is nearby our office. We sat outside today on the patio and had it all to ourselves on a nice June day. The servers were as friendly as we remembered and service was as fast as it used to be. The food is reliable and reasonably priced. I had the baked cod, as did a co-worker. Another had the french dip. We all really enjoyed our food. And here's a tip. Order the baked cod Cajun style. Perfect balance of seasoning and spice. I ordered the rice with Cajun seasoning as well. What a great lunch. And portions are generous. I thought I would give them another try after my first experience and today was worse than my first. I will post pictures. I ordered the French dip with mozzarella to go. When I got my food container open the sandwich looked really pathetic so I opened one half to look at what I'm dealing with. There was barely any beef and you cold see it doesn't even cover the bun. The Arby's Jr. Beef for $1.49 was about the amount of beef maybe a little more and I would rather have had one of them, what a waste of $9. The bottom bun was soggy even before you dipped the thing. The chips that came with my sandwich were mostly busted up. See my pictures. I can't believe a chef or food server at a restaurant would even send out such garbage. If you are not going to put any beef in your French dip than don't put it on the menu. I have had all kinds of beef sandwich through out my life and this is by far the stingiest portion of beef on a sandwich period. Don't these people know that most people have a camera on there phone and there garbage food will hit the Internet for everyone to see. A co worker went to Arby's and ate his food in front of us and the co workers that looked at my sandwich laughed and said look how much beef is in the Arby's sandwich. My family and I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday, we were in the area and had always meant to try the place out. Three people got the Assembly Burger, I had the veggie wrap with fries and my sister had the grilled cheese. First, I do think this place is cute and has that old timey feeling. Not fancy, not quite a supper club, just retro. The table are closer together and there's also a bar area if you prefer to eat there. Being 1 pm on a Saturday it was somewhat busy and filled up during the hour we were there. Our waitress was nice but made comments about how busy she was (she was obviously the only server working) and that to me is unprofessional and made us feel rushed. To the food: my wrap was huge and very filling, I could only eat half of my meal. It was pretty generic though, just a huge tortilla filled with random salad ingredients. Not horrible but not something I would crave. My boyfriend said his burger was thin and not that good, it seemed to him they try to cover up how thin the patty is with all of the toppings. No one else said anything about their food being good or bad, so I'm sure it was just decent. I would go back to the Butler Inn to try other items, they did have a pretty huge menu with items to accommodate most anyone and they have a nice outdoor patio for the warmer days. read more

We stopped in here after a day of volleyball. We had a big appetite and were in the mood for something filling. The Butler Inn definitely filled the void. They have a large menu and there is something for everyone. It was St. Patrick's day and they had a few good specials, corned beef meal and sandwich. Being a non-meat eater, I opted for the tuna melt and my wife had the veggie wrap. I swapped out the chips for fried onions. The sandwich arrived with a huge portion of onion rings. Good thing there is a lot of air in that portion :-). The sandwich was well cooked and tasty. My wife's wrap was very fresh and chalked full of veggies. Giving slight dings because the service, although very nice people, was slow. I was parched and need that Guinness to wet the whistle, but it took ~10min to get. And they were not too busy either. The only reason I am giving this establishment one star is due to the only server there that was somewhat helpful to us. Outside of that, what me and my colleagues experienced yesterday at Butler's Inn was reminiscent of a scene from a restaurant during the Jim Crow era. The manager, Nancy, made it clear that Black people were not welcome there. Though we were a group of black professionals that patronized them frequently (even holding our holiday party there),, according to her, we were a "pain in the a**" every time we came. Worst lasagna EVER. It was a shallow dish. It looked like stouffers lasagna cut down. 1 side was all sauce. 1/2 a lasagna strip down the tiny dish. A common garlic bread. That was the best part of the meal. $14.95 robbed from my pocket. Waitress was on the "I am sorry, but I don't care train" I assume. She forgot my pepsi as everyone had water infront of them. She was so dismissive to us. She was told about the dish issue she just said "oh... sorry. I will tell the kitchen." We had the just you talk I will be attentive to others. My soda was only given on the 1st drink no refills offered. Water was around the table were plenty. The water was empty a few times but got refilled. They don't split checks. Looked for a place to bring an international friend who wanted to try some American food, specifically cheese which his country doesn't have. We ordered a Philly Cheese Steak for him. Bad. Pieces of chopped beef and peppers on a bun covered by a slice of swiss cheese accompanied by chips. I had a Brat with cold kraut straight from a can accompanied by chips. $24. OMG. We brought a party of six to the Butler Inn for a Friday fish fry. There wasn't a wait which was a surprise because in the past there had always been at least a 19 minute queue before being seated. Our table started with drinks and a blooming onion appetizer. The onion was just like you would get at Outback Steakhouse with a slightly spicy dipping sauce. The onion was crispy and hot when it got to the table. We ordered soft drinks and beers for our drinks (because in the past mixed drinks were on the weak side). The fish entrees were ordered by 5 of 6 of us with one order of chicken wings. The wings were great and the medium level heat was plenty hot for that person. They said they were glad they hadn't ordered the "hot" option. There were mixed reviews for the seafood entrees. The seafood platter which came with cod, shrimp, and scallops, cole slaw, rye bread and tartar/cocktail sauce was just ok. In past visits that option had been excellent. This time the scallops were said to be heavily battered which took away from their flavor. The regular cod fish fry's were also nothing to rave about. They seemed slightly underdone with the fish being translucent in the middle. All of the plates came with French fries that were almost room temperature and not crispy. Maybe it would be better to come when there's a crowd and the food is cycled more quickly. The service was great, but the food this visit was subpar! With the abundance of locations that serve spectacular fish fries in the Milwaukee area it will be some time before we circle back around to the Butler Inn again. read more

I've had great service here before, and good food, but this time my food was cold. I sent it back and they had replated the food and microwaved it. I was really unhappy about it, so I just ate my soup ,which was really good. Another in my party had a steak, which was good. I may try the Bulter inn again, as I do prefer local restaurants over chains. 3 stars is all I can muster up at this time read more

Wow, I can't believe there hasn't really been a good review for this place! We just stumbled into it yesterday. It was a Saturday afternoon, a little before 1 pm. The place was pretty busy, but not over crowded at this time. Our server was very good - fast service, and just the right amount of "need anything else?"s. I had the BLT burger with onion rings in lieu of the fries, which was the special for the day. It was $7-8. The meat had just the right amount of pink ( i don't like my burgers well done. if you do, you should ask for it. I was not asked, but it seems to have been the default version). I was so glad I asked for the onion rings instead of the fries - they were really yummy! Not too much batter, and shredded really thin. Everything was on the greasy side, but I wasn't looking for healthy, and was in the mood for some comfort food anyway. My hubby had the fish and chips. If you are looking for it in the menu, look under "sandwiches". it's there for some reason... For some reason he thought it was tilapia rather than the cod that the menu said it was. I can't really tell the difference when they are fried, so who knows? In any case, the fish wasn't all that great. I think they were too fat and the batter too think. The fries were also quite on the fat side. Not quite wedges-fat, but about the thickness of 4 McDonald's fries put together..I prefer thin, so I wouldn't order this particular dish. My sister had the turkey burger with chips. She thought "chips" were going to be fries like my hub's fish and "chips", but they were just that - chips. She wasn't happy about them. The burger was a OK, and the turkey was deep fried. Overall, I would go back again for the onion rings and burgers. I saw another person eating a Ruben or some sort of a melt - and it looked so good! i might try something like that next time. I would also only go when I feel like I need some grease. Someone else told us that they have delish wings on Thursday nights, with the hottest sauce she has ever tasted. I'm an Asian nut with super calloused taste buds for spicy... Bring it on! A decent place for a bar / restaurant...I'd rate it a 3.5 so I I rounded it up to a 4. A good selection in the menu, I had the chicken sandwich which tasted nice. Prices are fairly inexpensive. The waitress did forget our drinks. Its old and run down on the outside but once inside isn't half bad, so don't let the outside appearance put you off. Went to Butler inn on mother's day. There where 5 of us in the group. It was not very busy and we where ready to enjoy a nice dinner as a treat to me from my daughter. We found out during ordering the server was the only one that showed up for the day and she was angry and upset having no help. The biggest complaint was the prime rib dinner ordered rare was well done. She sent it back to the kitchen and returned with a smaller piece than before and more well done. The cook and server argued about it and yelled at each other in the kitchen over it. Evidently the cook won because that's what we got. Poor experience on a day I wanted to enjoy with my family. Next occasion of any sort will not be Butler inn. read more

Walked in this morning... sat at the bar expecting to get drink and food.... sat there for several minutes completely unacknowledged... thought maybe the bartender was just busy.... but not even a "hi, will be right with you" 4 more people walk in sat down and were served immediately... still no acknowledgement... collected our things and we left after a solid 10 minutes of sitting there and being ignored. I have been to this place a few times. Overall, not very impressed. The food is okay, but not good. After my most recent visit I highly doubt I will be back. To start, the service was excellent both times. No complaints. Friendly and quick service. This past Sunday I was craving a chicken dinner and remembered that Butler Inn has a broasted chicken dinner. I am not even exaggerating when I say it was one of the worst chicken dinners I have ever had. The meat was over cooked and the breading was soggy. I have a feeling it was not made fresh. The size of each piece of chicken was laughable. The drum stick looked like a normal wing. Maybe 2 inches. The other pieces of chicken were just as small and disappointing. I remember thinking to myself as the dish was put in front of me. " How in the world did the chef think this was okay to serve." The place is usually pretty busy. Maybe I have been just getting the wrong foods at this place. Idk, but I am done trying. Looking for chicken that is better, try Tomkens, Hothead chicken or Mibbs & Vibbs. Butler in was always our go to Friday night carry out. Sadly the last few times they have really disappointed us. A couple weeks ago we ordered our usual cheeseburger with works and fries and fish fry. We got a completely different order and I had to drive all the way back to get what we ordered since I trusted them and didnt notice it until we got home. When I came and got the correct order they didnt even bother remaking it because it was ice cold. I figured it was just a fluke and things happen and ordered again tonight same thing. The burger was cold(even though I got there 15 minutes after I placed phone ordered) we always get bacon on burger there was just crumpled up bacon on the side and we always have fries and they just gave us crumpled up chips. Im super disappointed to say Butler Inn isnt what it was. We have to find a new carry out delicious spot for Friday nights. read more

Never again. I have been going to Butler Inn for years and have always enjoyed the food, drinks, and service. But today my colleagues and I were humiliated by the restaurant manager- Nancy. We are all Black professionals in a predominantly white establishment and they intentionally made us feel unwanted and uncomfortable. We requested a table for 7 and were told they were busy and we should just leave. We did not. We decided to wait for an available table. We were eventually seated at a table for 5 with 7 people. Although there was a table open with adequate seating for our group, she refused to accommodate us and stated that we "are always a pain in the ass". I felt that response was unprofessional and stated that we would leave and take our business elsewhere. She stated "good". A white male customer then told us to get the "fu** out."
