This review took me a few weeks to write because I am so sad I have to share my experience. Butter (Devonna) has been my go-to cake gal for the last couple of years. She has made birthday cakes, cupcakes, and a graduation cake for my fiancée. My fiancée wanted to order me my own graduation cake as I graduated with my masters a couple weeks ago. She contacted Devonna and they were set on the design and pick-up time. Devonna sent over the invoice and it showed $140 for a cake for 15 people. Usually we pay around $100-$120 so I checked in with her, because I wanted to make sure we were paying the right price. I tried to communicate clearly that I wanted to pay her but just wanted to double check the price was correct. This was on the Monday before my graduation. I had not heard from her so I reached out a couple more times in hopes to get her paid before pick-up. I got no response but I went to go pick up the cake anyway and figured I would hear from her soon so we could pay her. I show up to the location for pickup and the woman I spoke with brought out a cake, except it wasn't my cake, it was a birthday cake. I saw her texting Devonna and she replied back immediately, telling her to take out the "happy birthday sign" -- at this point the woman in front of me told me it was my cake just wrong signage. I told her it looked nothing like what we talked about (it was blue and white) and so she called Devonna. She said I was right, it was the wrong cake and said that Devonna would call me shortly for me to pick the cake up at her house nearby. I waited in my car for 30 mins in hopes devonna would call. She never did. We texted and called her repeatedly with no answer. I really enjoyed working with Devonna but it was the day before my graduation and now I had no cake. The morning of my graduation, my fiancée had to rush to a local bakery (shout out Delight) and pick up 2 already made cakes to replace the one we were going to get from Devonna. I've reached out since then and have had no response from her. I still have no idea why we were ghosted but are very sad we had to end this relationship and write this review.

I ordered 2 very last minute cakes and they came Out amazing. One for my son's first bday and the other for a baby shower the next day. Everyone raved about how good they were and the decoration was perfect for each event. I can't thank Devonna enough for her great work.

I selfishly don't want to write this amazing review because I don't want to let the cat out the bag, but this baker is the truth! I ordered a two tier cake for my 40th and provided inspo pics as well as some toppers I specifically wanted on my cake ( I added the 40 later) when I tell you not only was the cake pretty, but it was super tasty!!! Unfortunately, often times when you buy these pretty cakes they are pretty only and lack in flavor, but this is not the case with butter bakery! I love the fact that she used actual icing and not fondant (Im sure some people request or prefer fondant) but I do not and the cake held together perfectly with the frosting! My top layer was cookie butter yummmmm and the bottom layer red velvet yummmm! Both layers were moist and delicious! I'm so very satisfied with my order and will be ordering again in the future! The reviews do not lie lol and literally everyone at my party wanted to know where I ordered the cake. So thank you for the beautiful flavorful cake!

Edit: Now the owner is a liar as well, because I have the emails they never responded too. Check the one star reviews as I'm not the only one. Not sure what a pandemic has to do with responding to emails, all that was needed on their part was a professional apology and a doesn't excuse like a family emergency, which with a small business would have been completely understandable. But instead rude lies and unprofessionalism... Original post: Terrible at responding to emails, no phone number given, ghosted me and left me having to run to Marie calendars at the last minute when they left me hanging for an event... What a disgraceful way to run a business.

Devonna is a kind, sincere baker who has made all of our kids' birthdays magical. Her cakes taste so authentic and homemade. Her butter cream is so delicious, never too sweet or heavy. She will deliver any design based on Pinterest or a photo, but add her own flare. She doesn't compromise on any of her ingredients and puts so much effort. Easy to talk to, personable, and has never failed to deliver at any of our events. Highly recommend, along with any of her savory cookies.

I was looking to bring my coworkers some spooky treats on Halloween so a couple of weeks ago I made some calls to bakeries around Pasadena. DeVonna emailed me a few days later to let me know she could make the type of cookies I was looking for, we discussed designs and prices through email, then we agreed on 35 custom Halloween cookies, including pumpkins, candy corn, black cats, fall leaves, bats, and ghosts for $105, to be ready on October 30. She seemed friendly and was flexible on shapes and designs, telling me that she'd let me know if she couldn't find the cutters for any of them. I was charged through QuickBooks on October 19, which did make me a bit nervous considering I hadn't even met anyone from the bakery in person, or have any sort of contact info apart from an email address. DeVonna emailed me on Oct 30 to let me know there was an emergency that happened that day, causing her to be short staffed and wondering if she could deliver them later. Since I needed to bring them to work early the next morning, I told her I would prefer if she delivered them later that night instead of the next morning. Despite the obstacles, she was still able to have them made and delivered to me on October 30. In the rush to get my cookies to me on time, someone accidentally dropped a box of the cookies and DeVonna texted me to ask if I wanted replacement cookies or a partial refund. Since it was 8:30pm, I told her I'd rather have the partial refund. About an hour later, a delivery person was at the front with the cookies. I noticed a card was included, but I figured it was just a thank you note. The cookies looked adorable! I couldn't wait to share them with my coworkers and I texted DeVonna to let her know as much, and she responded warmly. The card was very sweet, too. She apologized for the inconveniences and had included the partial refund in cash. My coworkers absolutely loved the cookies, as they were as tasty as they were cute. My coworkers know I write reviews and multiple people told me to "write a good review!" If I need baked goods for another special occasion, I'm coming to Butter Bakery first.

TLDR: A delicious wonderful cake made with love and wonderful customer service! So I'm the one who received the cake rather than went through the process of ordering it but I will tell you what my friends told me. So my friend Anna emailed the bakery to ask for a cake for my birthday. Long story short, the cake was in the works but when it came to a theme they said they wouldn't be able to make it in time for what Anna asked, so my friends picked out a different theme instead. Anna was a little bummed about it but glad at least to still get a cake. Devonna was able to deliver the cake all the way to me in North Hollywood. Turns out, she was able to do the theme that Anna asked for and I was in for quite the surprise! Check the photo below to see what it was. The cake was delicious and beautifully decorated. Although I don't know all of the processes that went through, Anna told me that there was great communication throughout and Devonna was very sweet and kind and tried her best to work with my friends. Thank you so much for making it work out for me. It truly made my covid birthday quite special and memorable. I did not think I'd get this kind of cake in my 20's haha. I look forward to personally ordering treats from you soon!

The best customer service!! I emailed her on 3/28 the same day I needed a birthday cake for my nephews birthday and she delivered to La Canada. We had to cancel his birthday party because of the Coronavirus pandemic. I decided he still needs to have a cake of course! I didn't plan ahead though because of all the chaos going in. I ordered his gifts on Amazon and they did not arrive in time for his birthday. I wanted to make sure he had somewhat of a celebration for his 6th birthday. Butter bakery delivered !! Contactless delivery as well. She left it on the porch as requested by my sister. Delicious fresh cake! My 6 year nephew loved the cake. My 4 year old niece was so excited to sing happy birthday. We sang happy birthday to him via FaceTime. Sad day because he was expecting visitors and no one could come by. Butter bakery definitely improves his day!! read more

Devonna did an amazing job for my baby shower. The cake matched perfectly to the little pumpkin theme we described. She also did a wonderful job making us baby shaped sugar cookies. We got the strawberry flavor and it was fresh, moist and absolutely delicious. She personally delivered the cake to us the morning of which was incredibly convenient and threw in a white pumpkin which was the theme. Will be ordering from her for future events. I've tried a macha cake made by this business and it was fantastic. The frosting was just right. Not too thick and sweet, so it made me want to eat all of it along with the moist cake. The cake was well designed and personal delivery is a nice touch! read more

I recently moved away from my go-to bakery and am happy to say I have found my replacement with Butter Bakery! Devonna made a Black Forest cake for my dad's birthday and it was a hit! The chocolate cake was incredibly moist with a rich dark chocolate flavor and was well balanced by the frosting and filling without being overly sweet. Plus, it was gorgeous! I wasn't sure how her classic cake flavors would be decorated and it was gorgeous! We are all impressed by the height and how she went the extra mile with the design. Last Wednesday I called at 12:30pm that I needed a cake for 6-8 people to pick up by 5pm. Thinking it was never gonna happen but Butter Bakery came through! She made me a stunning vanilla and berry cake for my friend's birthday, perfectly decorated and extremely delicious. And ready by 4:45pm. Devonna went above and beyond when making our dream wedding cake come true!!! We purchased figurines of our dogs from another vendor and asked Devonna to make the dogs look like they were eating the cake, and it came out perfect! All of the other decor was exactly what we needed to make our cake beautiful. But more importantly..... the taste was *chef's kiss*!!! Couldn't tell you how their cakes are because we never got to that point. Initiated contact with plenty of time before event day which was mid week. I didn't find out all the pertinent information until after the weekend prior. This pretty much made what I wanted to do impossible. FYI if you are not getting a full batch of cup cakes, then you're stuck with whatever standard / special flavors they happen to already be making. I guess it was my fault for not being more insistent with questions early on in the conversation. They have a website, but it doesn't really tell you everything you need to know when you're trying to do something custom. read more

I am so excited that I found Butter Bakery! It was just about a week ago that I inquired about making a cake for my mom's birthday. My mom's favorite is German Chocolate but no one else loves coconut. So we came up with the idea of doing a regular chocolate cake and just putting some German chocolate frosting on the top. It was perfect!! I'm so happy with how it turned out and it was delicious!! Plus was delivered for free. For Christmas we spent $100 on a fancy cake from Goldbelly and this one was SO much better--and much less! Never again. Cant wait to try more things from Butter Bakery! read more

Devonna is a dream and we were so privileged to work with her for our son's second birthday! I called about a week in advance asking her to make him a cookie-themed cake, and she presented us with this gorgeous masterpiece! He absolutely loved it and had never seen so many cookies in his life. Her prices are really good for the amount of labor, detail, love, and art she puts into her work, and the cakes are easy to cut and do not fall apart easily. The cookies are all soft, and the cake is delicious. In addition to delivering the cake on a Sunday, she gave us some complimentary cookies and popcorn. We were blown away by her cake and treats! This place is amazing!!! I ordered 3 items (German chocolate, butter cake, and their cupcakes). Everyone loved the cakes and I loved the cupcakes because. I didn't get to try the cakes but the feedback was that both cakes were amazing and delicious and we will be ordering again from this place. When I tell you it was worth the wait, it was SO worth it. My friend requested this bakery for her birthday. We love supporting black owned businesses so decided to give it a try. I emailed to place my order and Devonna got back to me with options. She delivered fresh desserts and even added a few extra cookies for a slight delay. Ok so the cake I got for my son's bday was massive and we had leftovers and put them in the freezer. Just took a piece out from the freezer and it holds up so well!! It's still moist!! Ugh I hate that word moist but it really is. Butter Bakery is so good. They will definitely be the bakery I order cakes from going forward. AND! The crownies...my goodness the crownies. Butter Bakery is my new favorite local bakery! Devonna created the most beautiful and delicious carrot cake for father's day. There was a bit of a hiccup with the cafe that she bakes out of, causing some backlog for her, but she still pulled it all together and delivered the cake to me just in time! Ordered some gluten free chocolate chip cookies to be delivered to my home. Wow, these are delicious. They were nice and warm when I received them. They came in a cute little box with a ribbon and on the box it said "handmade with love". That is so sweet. I will definitely order more from butter bakery. I can't wait to try the other goodies they have. I also want to add Devonna, the owner is a very sweet, friendly lady. That is really important to me. I got cupcakes from Butter Bakery - I'd mentioned to Devonna that it was for a birthday, and without asking, she added lovely birthday decorations on the cupcakes. The cupcakes were beautifully made and packaged - my coworker loved them. Devonna also kindly accommodated an earlier pick up so that I could get to work on time with the cupcakes. Nothing is better than warm cookies! A friend knew I was under a lot of stress and could use a special treat. She ordered a big box of crownies (half chocolate chip cookie/half brownie) from Butter Bakery. They arrived warm, gooey, and so delicious. I can't wait to continue to support this wonderful bakery. Just want to thank Devonna on the gorgeous eggless cupcakes she baked for my friends baby shower last minute. I told her to surprise me with the frosting and they were absolutely gorgeous. In a word, PERFECTION. I ordered a German chocolate cake for Dad's 75th; it's his favorite, so he's very discerning. Chef Devonna Banks' creation was a masterpiece! The cake was ginormous, gorgeously decorated, and generously frosted (some skimp on the coconut exterior, NOT HERE!). Everyone in the family declared it was the best cake they had ever eaten (sorry, Aunt Lou), and had TWO PIECES each. This is something I have never witnessed in the history of my family. Before eating, though, we all had to pose with the cake, because it was such a lovely presentation (and centerpiece for our meal). My father was over the moon, and has already called to let me know he is enjoying cake for breakfast (goes great with coffee, he reports). More about the cake: perfect fudgy frosting on top, thick, dreamy coconut/nut on the sides, and moist, perfectly-cooked dark chocolate cake inside. I am in awe of Chef Banks' talent and will definitely be reaching out to her for more bakery masterpieces in the future! (Did I mention the price is incredibly reasonable? The person I gifted it to was ecstatic. If you take a look at each picture printed and cut out perfectly, the teacup molded to the perfect size, each colored detail intricately placed, absolutely every single thing done with prose and care. Talk about a passion for what she does. You absolutely won't be disappointed. Talk about a date, talk about a time, and she will work it out with you. She communicates incredibly quickly and will be sure to make you happy!

Bad communication & unorganized. I was searching for a bakery that is able to mimic the same Cookie Cake from the "big brand", Mrs. Field, but just make it better for my significant other's Birthday. I blindly called and said they are able to take on the task. Prior to proceeding, I asked for photos for reference to see if it would be up to standards, plus this is a custom order that has not been on her site or yelp that I can see for reference. Never got a response back via text the same day nor the next. The next two days, on the day of pick-up, I called again regarding a follow-up on the cookie cake and see how it would look like, so I can make any adjustments prior to delivery, and she said she can't... like what? She refused to send me images and asked to pay the invoice in advance when I have not seen what it looked like yet. While on the way to Perris Joint, I received the text that my order is ready. I arrived they mentioned it is not here yet, that I would wait for however long minutes. I was in a time-crunched that I needed at 12 pm, which the time I came. Since the person is hard to communicate with, I canceled. I'm always willing to support small businesses that I have been for years but support what I require, communication, and images of the cake that I asked for. Note: I believe this is a small "at-home" independent bakery. Pick up is at Perry's Joint in borderline, North Pasadena/Altadena. Perry's Joint shares the same building as the medical center, and they do not allow rear parking. Only street parking, which is somewhat hard to find. read more

So let me tell you my AMAZING experience with Butter Bakery. I called on the day of my sons birthday looking for chocolate chip cookies cause the kid doesn't like cake. A sweet lady answered the phone and I asked her if it was possible since it was so last minute. She said "Oh don't worry I'll bake some for you and have it ready in an hour". Ummmmm I was stoked to say the least and than we got creative and made him a specialized large cookie. And you wanna here the kicker???? She delivered it to the restaurant we were having his birthday dinner. She greeted me with the largest smile on her face that lighted up the room. Now let's talk about the cookies!!!!
