We tried the NW chowder added prawns & Butternut squash and sage with chorizo meatballs. $14 plus 4 for adding the prawns for a point (bowl) it's $26 for a quart. We did not try ice cream this visit but I did try an iced Vietnamese coffee. It was a little different made with coconut milk and spices. $7 overall good experience and will likely be back for icecream next time we visit this quaint town. read more

It's a whole experience. Especially if you're coming from north of Nehalem -- which can be Manzanita, Astoria Beach, Cannon Beach... make it a point to pause at the Vista/overlook point. They always have vegan options made of coconut milk which makes it so much easier when you're accommodating friends who also deserve to have amazing soup broth. You can select from Tofu, chicken, or seafood to complement the broth that you select. There are usually four options. Two vegan and non-vegan. I selected the Thai curry vegan option and added seafood because I preferred nondairy over the Northwest chowder option which has a wonderful but very rich cream. I've tried it before and it's delicious. I just wanted something lighter today. As I was finalizing my order I saw that they had a new coconut curry Ramen with kimchi. Since I tried something similar last night I decided it was a good chance to compare and I ordered the seafood version. I requested it to go which means it will be cold. Make sure you indicate whether you want it warm or cold if you are taking out. I have to say the broth was absolutely delicious. Photos will demonstrate it also included the soft boiled egg which makes the broth so comforting. And someone taught them the correct Korean practice of putting fresh kimchi and some roasted seaweed on top as garnish. For $18. I would have that again in a heartbeat. And when you put it in the context of a rainy Pacific Northwest day, I'm not sure there's a better comfort food. They also make ice cream, with vegan options, that is really delicious. Today I had the gingerbread and it tasted like cookies and cream with a ginger twist. One of the best things about this place is that they tried to source all the ingredients within 50 miles of their location. That's a commitment that is worth paying to support. Vegan triple ginger ice cream with vegan waffle cone. This melted fairly fast but it was absolutely delicious. I wish I got a big one to take home. Vegan Thai green curry chowder: I ordered a quart of this. It was alright. It had a lot of potatoes and broccoli so it was filling. Eight years later and finally made it back to Buttercup to give it a second try. WOW! It was excellent. We tried three of their four soups and each was delicious - the Thai chowder (amazing), Mexican corn chowder (yum), and clam chowder (great). We also got ice cream cones, with three of us opting for the banana cream pie and the fourth getting the strawberry honeycomb. All of them tasted super homemade, salty, and flavorful - yum! My favorite spot in Nehalem for a number of reasons... 1) Soup, soup, glorious soup 2) Seating area along the Nehalem River 3) Great people 4) Ice cream I feel like I am underselling the ice cream. Whenever I am in the vicinity, I grab lunch at Buttercup. Soup just usually feels like the right thing to enjoy on the often cool and breezy days at the coast. They typically have at least four options and I tend toward their Asian soups and curries, but on my most recent visit I mixed it up and tried Mexican Street Corn, because corn was in season. A good day turns into a great day when I get to sample one of their inventive ice cream flavors while I wait for my soup to be ready. Most important is to follow the path to the river so you can enjoy your meal outside by the other food carts. you know how sometimes you're on a mission to get somewhere and you happen to drive past a small town or a shop that looks interesting but you're going fast, you've got an end goal and you think you'll have time in the future to explore what you just passed? well, let me tell you that when you are in nehalem you need to go slow and find a parking spot on 7th ave because if it's hot, buttercup is likely serving up scoops of ice cream and there's probably a line (watch your step at the entry way--iykyk!) and if it's cold, the chowders are a home cooked godsend, to eat there or take to go! today i was in the market for chowder. i got two different pints: thai green curry and mexican street corn. i got them cold to be heated up later and they came with bags of toppings and also some excellent slices of crusty bread. the thai green curry had fried shallots and cilantro and i added grilled tofu. it was more than DELICIOUS, and it was PACKED with veggies! the employees were friendly and polite and i cannot recommend this darling place enough. they have pints to go in a freezer to the left of the cashier and there's a small, cute shelf when you walk in with some bougie accoutrements and seasonings that would catch any foodie's eye (it caught mine!) i was staying in arch cape and this was literally a 12 minute drive to obtain dinner at the end of a lazy saturday spent reading and walking the beach. it was comfort food at its finest and i'm so glad i took a chance on buttercup because it did not disappoint! go easy on the accelerator in the vicinity--your stomach will thank you! read more

They have one vegan chowder, and one vegan ice cream choice, also one sorbet. I have liked most of the vegan ice creams, particularly one with peanut butter and one with black walnut. I wish they would do more variety in the vegan flavors, such as lemon pie or something. They also have vegan cones available. There's some sort of Thai iced coffee too. It's just order at the register style with no indoor seating. Friendly with a simple interior. I really like stopping here when I see that it's not crowded. Located on Highway 101 nestled between North Coast Pinball and Victorian Morning a cute antique shop. This is a small little shop with small batch ice cream and THE most delicious seafood chowder I have ever tasted. The ice cream flavors vary by konth and have some adventurous flavors. I tried a child's scoop of mango chutney, rum raisin karaxapone and star anise. When I say "wow" I mean an oral gasm in every spoonful! Wow! Creamy with some bite, flavors bursting in your mouth, absolutely delicious! The clam and seafood chowder can be purchased in a cup or bowl with extra scoops of seafood to purchase. Then I saw the fresh baked bread in the kitchen, and noticed the salad on the menu-- hazelnuts, goat cheese, greens. Got it! Quick counter service. Buttercup was a great stop for lunch on our way from Cannon Beach to Tillamook. Definitely stop by if you're in the area and looking for some new takes on chowders! There was a bit of a line out the door but part of that was due to them keeping the inside limited to one party at time. The line moved fairly quickly - in all we probably waited ten minutes to order and another ten minutes for food. We got the Malaysian seafood curry and the oyster curry. Both were good, with plenty of seafood and chunks of other ingredients, but the Malaysian seafood curry was our obvious favorite. It had pieces of fish, shrimp, squid and boiled egg. Both chowders were served with a piece of crusty bread to soak it up. For $10 for a 16 oz serving, it's pretty good given that they include quite a bit of seafood and it's filling. This place also has interesting ice cream and cone combos as well as drinks. While we didn't have room for ice cream, we did try a ginger drink and their Vietnamese iced coffee which had a good cardamom flavor and their own coconut cream instead of sweetened condensed milk. I liked the flavor but the coconut wasn't my favorite - good option for vegans though. read more

I was not expecting this! I was next door getting fish and chips and one of my friends suggest ice cream after. Never one to say no, we went in and scoped out the shop. The first thing I noticed was the super interesting flavors. Being a small town ice cream parlor I was anticipating traditional flavors, but nope! You can tell they love to get creative here at Buttercup. I went with a burnt chocolate which was a unique twist on a classic. It cut down on the sweetness but kept that expected chocolate flavor. They recommended it on a salted almond cone and who am I to turn that down? I was also drooling over the idea of their pear gorgonzola, but you can only eat so much ice cream in one sitting, right? They also had marshmallow ice cream which sounds pretty much perfect. There are vegan flavors to choose from, so bring along a vegan friend! They also do chowders, which I didn't try. I'm shocked that it's taken me this many years to finally post a review! From the seasonal, locally sourced, hand curated chowders, to the unique out of this world ice cream flavors. You and your taste buds will not be disappointed! They have options for any dietary needs (vegan, gluten free, etc) I love that they have partnered with some amazing local companies and are offering their goods (wolf moons coffee and bread, North Fork 53 teas etc) You need to add this place to your stop and it will make your next coastal visit the most magical, delicious experience! I went here last summer, and it's taken me 9 months to write this review. But I have something to say about this place. We only had the ice cream not the chowder. THIS IS THE BEST ICE CREAM I'VE EATEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I live 2000 miles away but I may have to go back just to have more ice cream. Chef/owner Julie Barker knows what she's doing. This ice cream is homemade and served with a homemade cone designed to pair with the ice cream flavor. It's not a store with 30 different flavors of ice cream. Instead, they have a small selection every month with a matching cone. The menu this month on her FB page includes "green herb on a brown butter cone; burnt chocolate on a salted marcona almond cone; marshmallow on a chocolate-dipped graham cracker cone," and several others, including two vegan options. I am so happy that this little place was highly recommended to me as they have wonderful soups and sorbet/ice cream. I was so impressed that they offer some yummy sorbet, lavendar lemon, and on a delicious gluten free waffle cone! There are ice cream flavors that were tempting and other sorbets. I am lactose and gluten intolerant, so that limited my options. The Peruvian chicken soup has amazing broth and taste with a little kick while the gazpacho was also tasty. You even get a slice of homemade bread, which smelled and looked amazing, with each soup purchase. I cannot comment on the taste as I have to go gluten free, but I'm sure it tastes as good as it appears and smells. I will return for sure! read more

NW clam chowder was great! Fresh and loaded with seafood with its own flair! I prefer this thinner, tastier chowder chock full of clams variant rather than the must eat with a fork and watch it stand, thick, meh-flavored version while you play hide & seek for clams like Mo's has. If you liked the old classic Cannon Beach/Seaside Doogers version or love todays South Bay Wild Seafood in Astoria (my personal #1 favorite) then you've found a great spot. Stopped at Buttercup the other day for a bowl of soup. Ended up ordering the NW Clam Chowder. Does not taste like your traditional clam chowder. Appears to be an original recipe. Regardless, it was very good. I also tried a bite of my wife's marshmallow ice cream and it was fabulous. All of the ice cream are original flavors created by the owner. If you are in the area you need to try their soup or if you are only in the mood for ice cream this is the place to go. Not sure I have ever tasted better ice cream. I'm always excited to find restaurants in small communities who offers vegan options. Then there are places like The Buttercup, who make it even better! I ended up going there a second time during the week because the first was so delicious. The general menu is small and focused primarily on chowders and ice creams. The first time I ordered the green curry chowder with tofu. The ingredients were so fresh, with a wonderful combination of flavors and just the right amount of kick. It was served with a slice of fresh wheat bread with a nice crispy crust. To wash it down, I ordered their ginger drink chilled and it was a refreshing balance to the chowder. The second time I went for the red curry chowder with tofu. Again there was the delicious melding of fresh produce and spices with a bit sweeter lean to this dish. This time I ordered their Vietnamese coffee chilled and it didn't disappoint. My daughter had the vegan peanut butter chocolate ice cream, which was rich and creamy. We didn't get a chance to try the lavender sorbet, but look forward to next time around! The staff were very friendly and the overall vibe of the place was welcoming. It had cute decor and they sell some local items, as well as their food products to go. They were following healthy/strict COVID protocols regarding distance and masks. They currently request only one group in to order at a time. It isn't a huge space inside, so it made sense. Even with this protocol in place, the service was timely. There is no indoor seating, but there's a cool spot to eat out back along the water that has tables. There is another food cart back there too. Highly recommend checking it you are in the area!!!
