    The Chowder varieties are delicious!
    Stephanie S.

I love the fact that you can grab your chowder or icecream and sit by the river out back to enjoy. We tried the NW chowder added prawns & Butternut squash and sage with chorizo meatballs. $14 plus 4 for adding the prawns for a point (bowl) it's $26 for a quart. We did not try ice cream this visit but I did try an iced Vietnamese coffee. It was a little different made with coconut milk and spices. $7 overall good experience and will likely be back for icecream next time we visit this quaint town.

It's a whole experience. Especially if you're coming from north of Nehalem -- which can be Manzanita, Astoria Beach, Cannon Beach... make it a point to pause at the Vista/overlook point. Photo included. Make it part of your journey and this soup and ice cream place is a wonderful destination location for lunch. They always have vegan options made of coconut milk which makes it so much easier when you're accommodating friends who also deserve to have amazing soup broth. You can select from Tofu, chicken, or seafood to complement the broth that you select. There are usually four options. Two vegan and non-vegan. I selected the Thai curry vegan option and added seafood because I preferred nondairy over the Northwest chowder option which has a wonderful but very rich cream. I've tried it before and it's delicious. I just wanted something lighter today. As I was finalizing my order I saw that they had a new coconut curry Ramen with kimchi. Since I tried something similar last night I decided it was a good chance to compare and I ordered the seafood version. I requested it to go which means it will be cold. Make sure you indicate whether you want it warm or cold if you are taking out. I have to say the broth was absolutely delicious. Photos will demonstrate it also included the soft boiled egg which makes the broth so comforting. And someone taught them the correct Korean practice of putting fresh kimchi and some roasted seaweed on top as garnish. For $18. I would have that again in a heartbeat. And when you put it in the context of a rainy Pacific Northwest day, I'm not sure there's a better comfort food. They also make ice cream, with vegan options, that is really delicious. Today I had the gingerbread and it tasted like cookies and cream with a ginger twist. One of the best things about this place is that they tried to source all the ingredients within 50 miles of their location. That's a commitment that is worth paying to support. Service was also wonderful. Always friendly. And there's usually a line for a good reason. Be a little Patient. Lots of ambience.

Eight years later and finally made it back to Buttercup to give it a second try. WOW! It was excellent. We tried three of their four soups and each was delicious - the Thai chowder (amazing), Mexican corn chowder (yum), and clam chowder (great). We also got ice cream cones, with three of us opting for the banana cream pie and the fourth getting the strawberry honeycomb. All of them tasted super homemade, salty, and flavorful - yum! Staff were really friendly and the ambiance was relaxed. We'll definitely be back again on our next trip to the coast.

Butternut squash curry and chowder enjoyed on their covered patio

The soups/chowders here are delicious and perfect for a cold or rainy day at the coast! We tried a butternut squash curry and chowder and they were both very flavorful and hearty. They are brimming with components other than the liquid with a nice variety of textures and flavors. They are served with a nice piece of bread and butter. They also have homemade icecream with interesting flavors and paired with creative cone flavors. We tried the burnt chocolate, which reminded me of a fudgesicle. A+ for creativity, but I didn't love the execution. I'll definitely be back for the curries and chowders! There is a covered area and outside seating around back by the fish 'n chips food cart.

Best organic rich ice cream - burnt chocolate and turtle sunday flavors I tried were delish. Also loved New England clam chowder. Convivial patio by Nehalem river. Populated with seafood and taco food carts. Don't miss out on the ice cream ice - I scream, you scream and we all scream for this is the most delicious ice cream

you know how sometimes you're on a mission to get somewhere and you happen to drive past a small town or a shop that looks interesting but you're going fast, you've got an end goal and you think you'll have time in the future to explore what you just passed? well, let me tell you that when you are in nehalem you need to go slow and find a parking spot on 7th ave because if it's hot, buttercup is likely serving up scoops of ice cream and there's probably a line (watch your step at the entry way--iykyk!) and if it's cold, the chowders are a home cooked godsend, to eat there or take to go! today i was in the market for chowder. i got two different pints: thai green curry and mexican street corn. i got them cold to be heated up later and they came with bags of toppings and also some excellent slices of crusty bread. the thai green curry had fried shallots and cilantro and i added grilled tofu. it was more than DELICIOUS, and it was PACKED with veggies! the employees were friendly and polite and i cannot recommend this darling place enough. they have pints to go in a freezer to the left of the cashier and there's a small, cute shelf when you walk in with some bougie accoutrements and seasonings that would catch any foodie's eye (it caught mine!) i was staying in arch cape and this was literally a 12 minute drive to obtain dinner at the end of a lazy saturday spent reading and walking the beach. it was comfort food at its finest and i'm so glad i took a chance on buttercup because it did not disappoint! go easy on the accelerator in the vicinity--your stomach will thank you!

    Vietnamese coffee - vegan: interesting....
    Mya N.

This was a very cute and charming spot. It's a bit tight inside because of how crowded it can get waiting in line to order. No seating inside. The folks here were very nice and friendly. My picks: Vietnamese coffee was vegan and was interesting...def doesn't taste what I am used to. It had some cardamom in it, which gave it an unusual flavor... Vegan triple ginger ice cream with vegan waffle cone. This melted fairly fast but it was absolutely delicious. I wish I got a big one to take home. Vegan Thai green curry chowder: I ordered a quart of this. It was alright. It had a lot of potatoes and broccoli so it was filling. I wish it had a bit more broth and it needed some Thai chili for more kick and it would've been great. Overall, I would def be back because that ice cream was memorable.

Ice cream! I'm gluten free and my wife is dairy free.

We drive in from Portland just to go here- that's 2 hrs. Adorable little store. Friendly food preparers and it's nice to see the same faces every time. Quick turnaround and there is a covered seating area out back with two clean restrooms. Dairy-free chowder options, can do chicken or tofu if you don't want fresh seafood, super fresh ingredients, lovely little salad, and my wife loves the honey lavender lemonade. They also have a small store with nice food ingredients to purchase and a freezer with soups and ice creams (while they last).

A must try for ice cream while on the Oregon Coast. Located right off the Main Street in town you can easily park at any of the public parking complexes and walk over. I tried the Lemon ice cream and it was delicious. Their signature is their special cone. Prices were reasonable $6.00 for a large scoop of ice cream. Seating out doors and around back. Service was great, but this place is popular so prepare for a little wait during high peak times.

3 kids scoops: mango chutney, star anise and rum marscapone

Located on Highway 101 nestled between North Coast Pinball and Victorian Morning a cute antique shop. This is a small little shop with small batch ice cream and THE most delicious seafood chowder I have ever tasted. The ice cream flavors vary by konth and have some adventurous flavors. I tried a child's scoop of mango chutney, rum raisin karaxapone and star anise. When I say "wow" I mean an oral gasm in every spoonful! Wow! Creamy with some bite, flavors bursting in your mouth, absolutely delicious! The clam and seafood chowder can be purchased in a cup or bowl with extra scoops of seafood to purchase. I warmed the rest of my chowder up the next morning and it was still tasty as ever. Highly recommended stop on the coast.

    Chowder and shrimp salad

Friendly staff, and amazing ice cream. Best one is the strawberry honeycomb!! It was delicious, I'd definitely go back for the ice cream! The chowder (more like a soup vibe) was flavorful too and the shrimp in the salad was nice. Plus it's gluten free too!

Chowder menu - some change out seasonally, but the NW Clam Chower is a year-round crowd-pleaser

Kind of like the feeling of coming home. The place was packed -- just a testament to their very good food and excellent drinks -- there was even a couple sitting outside and they had a fire going. Wish I had taken that photo. It was a really beautiful moment. The place was decorated and felt very holiday festive with small bright lights reflecting off the tin ceiling. Excited to have a couple of days on holiday here. Stopped in to pick up their latest version of fudge because Christian the Baker keeps evolving the art of fudge making...and you don't want to miss an iteration. Using the owner's grandfather's recipe as the base, he makes some of the best fudge in Oregon. Tonight I was told he decided to explore a Mediterranean approach and added nutty sesame to the fudge. The sharp but soft chocolate is a perfect compliment to a delicious drink on a cold, cold night. While I was waiting for the fudge to be packaged to take back to the fireplace in my room, I spied their latest culinary endeavor sitting in jars on the counter... and actually started salivating. They are now serving Pickled eggs. Incredible. When was the last time you had a pickled egg? When done right, pickled eggs are among the most satisfying and clean bite of delicious ungrilled, ungreasy proteins in the world. And the lounge has decided to serve two different kinds, so we might've died and gone to heaven. If you love eggs of every kind, as I do, boiled eggs hold a special place because they are hearty and compact and completely whole. So when you add a spices and acid to that perfection...it emerges as "wow." The service was attentive and thoughtful always, and I was told they're open New Year's Eve until 9.

My first impression upon entering the complex was that this was a first-rate establishment! The cheese samples were ample, and they were delicious! Tillamook offers self-guided tours or premium experiences for early arrival tours and tastings. There is a Tillamook Country Smoker down the street, which is a small beef jerky outlet shop, and then there's the highly visited Tillamook Creamery, where they make the cheese and ice cream. The jerky outlet was awesome with really affordable prices and a variety of flavors, including tons of sugar-free options. Tillamook Creamery, on the other hand, was hectic. Lines everywhere, but managed well with all their signage and employees directing you where to go. The parking lot was huge and crowded, but easy to find a spot as people came and went. Food 2/5* On first glance, everything looked good. I planned to get so many things, but they ran out of grilled cheese sandwiches and when I saw them cutting up the deep dish pizza and it was soft, not crispy, I changed my mind on the pizza. The burger was tiny and you couldn't really taste the sharp white cheddar at all. The mac and cheese, also bland. The random sprinkle of crushed pretzels on top did not work at all - too chunky, hard, and did nothing to enhance the mac and cheese. The only dish that was good with flavor were the cheese curds. Dipped in spicy ranch, it was a great pairing. Self-Guided Tour & Samples 5/5* The highlight was the self-guided tour upstairs that allowed you to look into the factory below. On the way out was a sampling station, where they had 4 choices of packaged cheese snacks to sample, plus whatever special they had. They were so generous, with no limit to how many you wanted to sample. The best was the smoked black pepper white cheddar. Dog Friendly 3/5* They also had a store inside selling all their goodies and merchandise, including for dogs! Although the front had a huge lawn allowing dogs, it was inconvenient that dogs weren't allowed inside. There were two lines inside, one for hot food and the super long line for ice cream. There's also another line outside for just ice cream only and small snacks. It would've been nice if there was a line for hot food outside so those with dogs could stay together. Overall it was a good experience, but a one and done kinda thing.
