A must stop if you are traveling on Highway 101. The chowders are amazing, and just don't stick to the standard New England style. I had a Caribbean seafood chowder with Calamari, shrimp and fish in a coconut chicken broth. Superb. And after chowder you have to have an ice cream cone. This place is amazing. As a chef, I was very impressed (& envious) about the design and functionality of the kitchen. The chowders are made to order - so look out behind the building for a picnic table. They are really tasty. The ice creams are made there the flavors change daily and if you order a cone, those are specifically created for the kinds of ice cream. This place is amazing!! The chowders are truly delicious and super fresh! The bread, which came with the chowder, was freshly baked also and equally yummy. I am dairyfree so I had a coconut based chowder and it was full of fresh seafood and tons of flavor! My family had the clam chowder and they all loved it- even my six year old, and she is very picky. Afterwards we had their homemade ice cream and sorbets- all the flavors we got were amazing-- I had the "almond joy" a vegan ice cream with a delicious vegan cone. Finally! An ice cream place on the Oregon Coast that doesn't serve Tillamook ice cream. Not that there's anything wrong with Tillamook (other that the fact that you can get it anywhere and it's not small batch with unique flavors). I LOVED my honey lemon balm ice cream served on a brown butter waffle cone. My Dad got the Pineapple - Chile- Mint because he's recently lactose intolerant. He wasn't super thrilled with his but I enjoyed it when I sampled it. I think he's still used to the ice cream experience he can't enjoy anymore. Since I was only in the area for a day I did get little tastes of a few of their other options. The Avocado- Coconut milk- Lime vegan option was creamy and delicious, something I would definitely try again and their Smoked Salmon ice cream was a delicious savory ice cream tasting like a salmon spread. I think it would be delicious served on top of crepe stuffed with sautéed or roasted veggies. read more

Had a delicious lunch on my weekend beach travels. Our chowders were all made to order in front of us and were fresh and satisfying. Unlike other places I've been to at the beach, you won't leave here with a bag full of leftovers, but you will be full from the not too heavy chowder featuring local ingredients. I had the prawn and fennel chowder and was pleasantly surprised at the mix of vegetables, large size of prawn, and touch of fennel. The bread was fresh and artisanal with a good crust. Our group enjoyed that we could get dessert at the same shop and LOVED that they feature vegan ice cream options. The best ice cream on the coast hands down! Buttercup sources premium locally grown ingredients including the fresh milk and cream from Bennet Family Creamery in Tillamook. It is very dangerous to have such amazing ice cream so close to where I live. As I drive through the little riverside town of Nehalem Buttercup tempts me to stop and grab a cone of the Vietnamese Coffee ice cream in a brown butter cone- or the Blood Orange Sorbet in a marcona almond cone. Insanely good! The chowders are 10 levels above the usually cream and potatoes mush that found ubiquitously on the coast. The baby calamari tentacles in the delicious Thai coconut chowder were a surprise and it made me realize how few times I actually see the seafood in chowder nowadays! These chowders are built to order- fresh in front of you and served hot or cold to go. Buttercup is in the big yellow building near the 90 degree turn in Hwy 101 in downtown Nehalem. I am a local. I am also "picky" about my food. It must taste GREAT, be locally sourced as much as possible, and be organic. This place fits all criteria! It is amazing! A previous post reviewed the specifics of the restaurant, so I will just add an agreement to the great taste and variety of the food. I have pretty much quit making chowder and just buy theirs. I bought some yesterday and have been asked to being food tomorrow to a family gathering. That's right; I am on my way to Buttercup to pick up some more chowder. This little place is unique and inspiring. Julie, the owner and chef, makes 4 different fantastic chowders every day (and also sells them frozen to take home) as well as several homemade ice creams and two or more flavors of semifreddo (Italian frozen mousse). All of the chowders are gluten-free and there are vegan choices as well as seafood ones. All of the ice cream is gluten-free also, some dairy free, and there are cheddar cones, gluten-free cones, honey lemonade (killer!) and more. There's a lovely little deck outside, covered and alongside a river, to take your tray out to, if you want to eat in (as we did). My husband and I shared two bowls of chowder...one Thai vegetable, the other seafood, and got to taste all the ice creams before making our choices. It was a memorable and affordable meal, all done fresh in front of us. We were visiting in nearby Manzanita and read about the Buttercup....just had to drive those couple of miles down the highway to try it. We'll go back tomorrow, and we'll take some frozen chowders to enjoy on our next stop down the Oregon coast. Don't miss this place!!!!!! read more
