Butterfish is not your average sushi restaurant. In the two visits I've made, I have not been disappointed once by any of their dishes. The sashimi and fish really are as buttery as their name -- it is unlike anything I've ever tasted! My favorite has to be the Kurodai Experience, an optional addition to the omakase plate priced at $69 per person. Intricately cut and carved from the belly of the Black Sea bream, each piece is incredibly soft but still reserves a bite in texture. There's a reason why this item is called an "experience," as it's not *just* a sashimi dish. Should they have any left in their inventory, please make sure to give this a try! Last but not least, the staff are amazing. Even in the midst of their busiest hours, the waiters and waitresses are so friendly and accommodating to all of their customers. Paired with the delicious food and ambiance, Butterfish Sushi easily cements itself as one of the most memorable omakase experiences I've had in Berkeley.

Came around 7 pm on a Saturday and waited maybe ~15 mins for a seat at the sushi bar. It's street parking but wasn't hard to find a spot! I got the omakase and my partner got the chirashi bowl-- the fish really impressed us! each bite was buttery, and the flavors all melded well together. We also ordered a second order of the scallop nigiri with snow crab-- a highlight for us! We shared an appetizer of scallops with uni, sooo good. I would come back to try other menu items!

A new favorite in Berkeley! The fish was very fresh and melts in your mouth. The menu was creative, and I loved the flavors and the seasoning. We also ordered two rolls, but we did not like them that much. The next time we're here, we will probably stick small plates and nigiri/sashimi. I would recommend making a reservation, as the wait can get pretty long (it's a small restaurant). The servers ended up adding an extra table outside so we can squeeze in.

I have never had sushi that tasted like this before! It seriously blew us away. We celebrated my husband's birthday at Butterfish, I made a reservation online through Yelp and I'm glad I did because the restaurant is very small and quaint. They have 5 tables and bar seating inside and a few tables outside. They have wine, beer, sake, and non alcoholic options. What we ordered: 10 piece nigiri, artic roll, smoked hamachi roll, otoro nigiri, chef's poke inari, butterfish nigiri, and salmon roe nigiri add quail egg. All of the fish was incredible quality. The smoked hamachi roll is just as delicious as it is beautiful. It's seriously a showstopper with the smoked dome reveal. I had never had inari before, it's a tofu pouch with the poke and rice inside. The pouch was soft and a little sweet. I'm glad I gave it a try! The otoro was super buttery and luscious. The artic roll was light and kind of had a floral taste to it. The butterfish nigiri was my favorite bite of the night, I understand why it's their namesake! The fish was lightly torched and had a little sriracha and fresh truffles on top. It was out of this world! For my husband's birthday they gave him a fish ice cream on the house. They played birthday music and had a sparkler. It was really fun and sweet! We can't wait to come back!

This place has become MY FAVORITE SUSHI RESTAURANT IN THE BAY! Omg so delicious, the fish is crazy fresh, and the ambiance is perfect for date night or a nice dinner with friends. Prices are not too bad and service is great. I've never had such good sushi in the bay before...the fish just melts in your mouth. It was so good we ordered another sushi roll afterwards hahaha.

Decided to stop by on our way back to the city from Tahoe and man am I glad we did. This was some of the freshest, best sushi I've EVER had. I'm sad the don't have an SF spot! Super hospitable staff, creative menu, excellent flavor profiles. We started with the cucumber salad which had some purple wakame in it which was stunning a delicious! The butterfish appetizer and salmon / fresh crab rolls all melted in your mouth. Can't wait to go back, they have a few tables outside too if it's a sunny day.

Made a reservations to have Sunday lunch with my cousins. We each got the omakase 7 piece nigiri special and shared some rolls. Two of my favorites were the smoked hamachi roll and escolar roll. Both were smoky and delicious. All the fish here is so fresh! The uni, caviar, and monk fish liver spoon and toro nigiri were my favorites in the omakase. The restaurant is quite small so I recommend making reservations to get seats without waiting. Service is good and prices are reasonable for the quality of food. This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants so highly recommend giving them a try!

Quaint, cozy handrolls and sushi restaurant. Highly suggested to make reservation or join the wait list. Good service, good food. Nice addition to the Berkeley food scene

Butterfish Sushi is definitely my favorite sushi spot in Berkeley. We came here to celebrate my birthday with a reservation for 6 PM (make sure to make a reservation in advance or else you might have to wait). When we got there, the first thing I noticed was how cute the outside and inside ambiance was. Highly recommend it as a date spot or nice dinner with friends/family. We ordered the: Fresh Oysters (absolutely delicious, loved how fresh they were and the sauce was amazing) Bluefin Tuna Combo (the tuna pieces were extremely high quality and fat) Crab and Salmon Roe Inari (First time trying Inari, it has kind of a sweet flavor, not my preference and probably would get handrolls instead next time) Atlantic Roll (definitely my least favorite and it basically tasted like a California roll with salmon on top, nothing special) Salmon Nigiri (super fatty and delicious!) Overall, besides the Atlantic Roll which I thought wasn't too special, everything else we ordered was delicious. For their service, fish quality, and ambiance, I definitely have to give Butterfish Sushi 5 stars and would love to come back again!

We arrived at opening and was able to get a spot immediately but the restaurant definitely fills up quick! It's very cozy but charming. Fish is very fresh and possibly my new favorite sushi spot. Loved the Inari set. Service was great. This place is a gem but is pricey and will likely have a wait unless you come at odd hours.

I went to a Butterfish sushi restaurant with my sister and it was such an amazing experience The food was absolutely delicious especially the fish. It was incredibly fresh, sweet, and just melted in your mouth The atmosphere was lovely and very relaxing, making it a perfect place to enjoy a meal. The chef was wonderful and paid great attention to every detail, and the service was outstanding from start to finish. Overall, everything was just perfect. I was truly impressed Definitely a place I would love to come back to again!

We went to Butterfish Sushi on Valentine's Day and arrived right when they opened, so we were able to get seated right away. The restaurant filled up quickly after that and was completely packed. The space is small and super cute, and it reminded me of the cozy restaurants in Japan. We shared the smoked hamachi roll, spicy tuna lover roll, and the bluefin tuna combo that came with sashimi and nigiri. It was very filling for the both of us. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and delicious. I would definitely come back and I highly recommend this place!

Our waitress was quick & greeted us with a smile & brought waters. The menu had a lot of options to choose from, so it wasn't hard for us to find something we wanted to try. We decided on the tempura mix, Mango Crunchy Roll, & the Hopkins roll. The tempura was good, just wish we ordered it a little bit more crispy. When it came to the rolls, both were amazing! They were huge & definitely got us full pretty quick. Our waitress made sure to check in on us during our visit & kept our waters filled. For dessert, we got the mochi ice cream. You can never go wrong with mochi ice cream as dessert(; overall, we had a great meal! The service was nice, restaurant was clean, & food was great. I'll definitely stop by if I'm ever in the area again.

We asked our server if that was normal, and she just flippantly told us that was how it was supposed to be. Luckily, there was no food poisoning afterwards, but the taste was definitely not as expected - think raw, slightly seared on the outside beef slices. My tempera was very thick, the tempura batter they used wasn't right. Usually, it should be nice and light. The fried sushi roll was fine. They do have a massive list of rolls - see my photo below. Everything was fine, I would probably grade it at slightly worse than a supermarket Japanese bento/sushi roll.

Everything we have had has been fresh, delicious, and well presented. The sashimi, specialty rolls, baked rolls (cooked ingredients besides tobiko), nigiri, and vegan/vegetarian rolls have all been excellent. I like the purple rice they use (sushi rice mixed with black rice) as it helps them stand out in both flavor and healthy offerings. The service is consistently on point too. Our servers have always been very courteous, attentive, and hard working. I appreciate that they can offer this level of food and service in a casual environment. I heard that they opened up a location in Albany within the last year or so that we have yet to visit. They do a great job and we're looking forward to dining with them for years to come.

Only lag was when we ordered 2 nigiri at the end and it took a really long time but I think the sushi chefs lost the order or something. Delicious sukiyaki, chicken skewers, cold tofu, salmon rolls, hamachi sashimi, Ikura and uni, tuna and Ikura nigiri, and hamachi Kama (not sure why they charge $21 and then $7 for a large when it is two small dollars that came out though). Decent wine selection - Chardonnay was good. Restaurant itself is fairly loud, especially with a baby that kept crying. But it might have been crying because it was loud. Owners should consider the Constellation System by Meyer Sound to make the dining experience more enjoyable for patrons. As this is a longtime bastion of Japanese food in the Bay, they should really invest in the sound portion of their restaurant. Prices have gone up since the last time I was here but it's not totally unreasonable. Good quality food and service. Love this place.

Now, we get to dine here as a family, and that nostalgic treat feels all the more satisfying. Food (4 stars) + Ribeye teriyaki was a hit--tender, cooked to perfection, and the kids loved it! + Lamb chop was a standout--one piece, but perfectly grilled, juicy, and tender. I could eat 2 of these with a bowl of rice and it would be a hearty meal! + Chicken karaage was solid--crispy, good portion, and a nice appetizer. It's basically a Japanese version of chicken strips that is way better than nuggets. + Salmon sashimi for the kids never disappoints. ~ Chirashi bowl was fresh and filling, though standard compared to other spots. There was a lot of rice which if we knew that we probably would've skipped the extra bowl I ordered to eat with my lamb chops. For the somewhat premium pricing, I wish they provided fresh chopped wasabi. ~ Stuffed mushroom skewer was just okay--tasty but nothing special. I guess for mushrooms it does taste kinda like a chicken meatball which could be a good thing. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) + Attentive and thoughtful service, especially accommodating a broken foot.
