This experience starts with a 3D movie about the migration of monarch butterflies, then a stop in the Emergence Gallery, where you can see caterpillars and chrysalis (aka cocoons). From there, visitors can access the Conservatory through the doors. Though a bit humid, it is such a magical environment with concrete pathways, a few seats, a koi pond, and lots of greenery. Various plants creating a beautiful setting, including flamingo flower, panama rose, purple heart, and sandpiper vine. And informative signs are posted throughout, educating visitors about the conservatory and butterfly care. Visitors are given a butterfly guide in the beginning, but some of the butterflies fluttered their wings so quickly nonstop, it was sometimes hard to identify. The big blue one (blue morpho, I believe) looked like a bird as it soared in and out of the plants and overhead. There were so many butterflies in the air, on the leaves and flowers, they even had signs noting how you could get them to land on you as well. The random music in the background wasn't too loud. At some point, the Harry Potter theme song came on, and what an enchanting vibe in the conservatory! They had bees in there too (behind glass). Once you exit the butterfly conservatory, there was much more to see. The Rainforest reptile gallery included awesome turtles (like the mata mata turtle camouflaged with the rocks), snakes, and even amazing axolotls on display. And the Tropical Waters room was delightful to view, with fish, stingrays, and more. There was also a gift shop, cafe, and vending machine selling edible bugs. The butterfly part is neat, here is what I have a problem with: My daughter and I left incredibly depressed after seeing all of the lizards, birds, and snakes in teeny tiny cages, some of them completely alone. Imagine not ever in your life being able to stretch out your body...that is what many of the animals in this place go through. We felt physically sick. They don't even let the moths go out with the butterflies since they hide during the day, also very sad. As beautiful as the butterflies were, we left extremely sad. Our visit was over a week ago and we still talk about it. Do better or release these animals that deserve a good life. read more

Butterflies are free to fly and so am I...WOW!!!! It was a butterfly wonderland for sure! This girl was in heaven amongst a variety of butterflies that kept giving me kisses... Before we actually entered the "butterfly sanctuary," we watched a 3-D short documentary about the life of a monarch butterfly. It was fascinating and I highly recommend watching it. To enter/exit you have to wait in a small room that is closed off to keep the butterflies from escaping. An employee will give you the thumbs up. You step into a enclosed conservatory with misters going on/off every few minutes to keep the room at an appropriate temperature for these tropical and exotic butterflies. So Zen and peaceful...it was lovely taking in the atmosphere here. If you sit still long enough, a butterfly or 2 will land on you. They will even climb onto your finger when you put it gently near its face. Such an incredible experience! On the way out you will pass the small cafe and the "overpriced" gift shop. *To avoid the school/camp tours, go later in the day. Wow this place was amazing! The Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale Arizona is breathtaking and allows you to enter into a fully enclosed massive human-made rainforest where you can interact with dozens of different types of butterflies. You get a card with all the different types of butterflies in there, so you can look for all of them as you walk around. It is very humid so make sure to dress appropriately. Great experience! Such a cute little place with an amazing butterfly conservatory. I have never seen so many butterflies in one place. My kids loved it, they said it was their favorite part of our activities during our stay in AZ. Couple things to know: it's pretty small so only takes about an hour to do, depending on how long you want to stay in the conservatory. It does get hot/humid in the conservatory but there's a small cafe right back inside where you can take a break. If there are tours/field trips, try to do the other areas and go back to the butterflies when they are done. Otherwise, it gets really loud and crazy with so many kids in there. Only con was the staff was a little short with us but I think they were overwhelmed by a huge field trip of small children that was there at the time. read more

The 3D movie which only for 15 mins to begin with before you walk inside the garden area is helping the kids to understand in more details better. It's a little expensive but it is worth it to check it out and let the kids spend time inside, seeing those beautiful butterflies, let they have the butterflies kiss their hands and those are something really special and they keep talking about for days. They also have a small walk way to see a little bit of aquarium before heading out to the gift shop. Butterfly Wonderland is one of several Scottsdale attractions located in the Arizona Boardwalk, a huge, two-story outdoor entertainment complex. Entry for 2 adults and a child is about $100, and I think kids who are naturally curious will find enjoyment here. However, if you have an overly active 5yo who likes to run around and have limited attention span, then this venue is probably not worth it. Upon entry, you are invited into an auditorium for a 3D video on butterfly that's maybe 5-10 minutes. We knew our son would not sit that long or be willing to put on glasses, so we skipped this. Next its the highlight of entering the Butterfly Sanctuary itself, a large garden with natural sunlight and humidity. Lots of plants, flowers, and butterflies of all shapes, sizes and colors. You can catch some of them in your palm, though in some cases they 'll land on your shoulder, hoodie, or off the rim of your cap like an upside down bat. They are attracted to bright colors. Afterwards, you go back inside and can check out the miniature reptile and sea-life exhibits. They had a Stingray pool, though I was more impressed with those gigantic Pacu fish. They eat everything and with their crazy metabolism. Overall, a decent place to visit and the Butterfly experience is somewhat unique. Entry fee a bit on the high side for the limited content though. read more

We enjoyed our visit here for sure. My 4 year old daughter loooooves butterflies so we had to check it out. The experience begins with a 3D film explaining the life cycle of a monarch butterfly. Then you move into a room filled with chrysalises and then you go into the actual butterfly wonderland. The actual wonderland is very cool--so many butterflies. Cool area to walk around and explore, not huge but warm and tropical. We spent about 45 minutes in this section, which was just enough. Once you leave this area, there is a snack bar, a small aquarium, and a reptile section. And of course the experience ends with a gift shop with lots of fun goodies. I'm not sure if we will return--if we do, it will not be a while. Not that it's not cool, just that we got our fill. Definitely recommend a visit--a very unique place to experience--especially if you like butterflies! read more

My 2 yr old loved this place! We were back and forth between doing this or the aquarium but ultimately decided to do this instead due to the time frame. The person at the window told us people usually spend 1-1.5 hrs here. When she said that initially, I was hesitant because it felt like a lot of money for an hour worth of entertainment but decided to give it a shot anyway. It is definitely pricy (I believe $30 or so for adults?) and most likely a once every year or two thing for us. I think I enjoyed the 3D film more than my kids although they did seem amused. The exhibit itself is kept at 80 degrees with humidity which is the environment the butterflies thrive in so keep that in mind when going. I felt like we could've spent a little longer there but it was a little toasty after a while. They do have some reptiles and fish as well which we spent the other half of our visit browsing. Overall, it was a fun activity and I'd recommend everyone to try it at least once. I didn't know how much my kids enjoyed it since they are so little and didn't seem too impressed while we were there but my two year old has brought it up multiple times since which made it all worth it. The atrium is so humid and could feel mucky at times. Not everything needs to perform on demand. Now let's talk price. It's about $33-$34 per adult. So you're at $70+ for two people just walking in the door. Add a kid or two and suddenly you're budgeting like this is a small vacation. If you're just passing through, that can feel steep. And yes, you do exit through the gift shop, because of course you do. Value? I genuinely don't know. Where else are you going to stand in Arizona surrounded by that many non-native butterfly species? It's unique. It's pretty. It's an experience. The question is just: what's that worth to you? Overall: magical, mildly chaotic, slightly expensive. It was amazing experience. Heads up they offer military discount for two people. So bring your CAC or military identification. You can buy your tickets over there and plus get the discounts. First there's video you watch about the butterflies with 3D glasses. Once you're done with the video, you go to one room and finally you get to see the beautiful butterflies. Learn about Bees and see a live Beehive. Enjoy the Koi Fish Garden as well. There's also access to the Rainforest Reptiles and the Tropical Waters exhibits. There are also Combo Tickets choice of picking 2,3 or 4 different attractions. There's food/snacks available at the snack bar also an awesome gift shop. My home state of Ohio has seasonal ones in Cincinnati and Columbus. In Aruba though the price got you in for a week ... would be nice if they all did that. If you are going to be in the area look at the combos options to save money on tickets. I spent every but of of an hour or 2. I already have reciprocal botanical garden pass but it's really cold this morning in the 30s. I was bitter cold and uncomfortable so found this to do inside while it warms up to the 50 and 60s. and this was very comfortable. I used to absolutely love butterfly wonderland and had a annual pass 10 years ago and was there quite often to get my annual pass worth. Fast forward to today. This is like a decade later. I brought my friend from out of town and it was nice to see updates to the place but the people that work at butterfly wonderland are not very friendly. They don't greet you when you walk in And I had to initiate conversation to the 2 women at the desk by the photo opt green screen. I was like we already have our tickets do we get them scanned here. The one that scanned us in just looked at me in disgust. Nothing came out of her mouth. No "enjoy your time, go this way" nothing. The other worker didn't even acknowledge us either. Okay maybe it's a one off days and they're having a bad day. We go down the hallway to make our way to the little butterfly movie and there's a school also waiting. The worker that would let us in to watch the butterfly video just stood there and starred. She then said if we want we can go see butterflies first and come back we could. Were in the cocoon room looking around and then we were ready to go into the conservatory. We get let in the little waiting area room. No instructions and door does say "wait for an attendant" so my friend and I wait. There is a worker on a stool near the door. After waiting for what seems like 10 minutes so we look at the worker on the stool in conservatory and knock on the window. She looks at us and gives us an ugly stare. We decided to go back to the cocoon room as we're not sure what to quite do. I've been here many times before in the past and this is so disorganized here. You would think workers would be happy to be working at such a beautiful place. I know I would and I used to for the winter wonderland holiday time as an angel. Everything was just off. The conservatory with butterflies was absolutely magically beautiful and my friend loved it. I know what to expect and do as I said I used to work here during the holidays. It was a really wonderful place to spend Mother's Day with an infant. I will say that inside the butterfly room it is very warm and humid so if you have an infant with you or a small child, be mindful of that. I did appreciate they had many other activities aside from just the butterfly room. There is a 3-D monarch movie and everything is very kid friendly. I also appreciated that they had a mini aquarium that you can go to free of charge. However, the price of the entrance ticket is a little spendy. Children under two get in for free. For my husband and I to get in it was about $70 with taxes. Parking was free and they did do a Mother's Day special so moms got three dollars off their tickets. They also did a Mother's Day card for all the moms coming in as well as the specialty photo with you and your family, which was super nice. We went to the boardwalk for the conservation expo then decided to go here. For what it is, I think it's a bit pricey. Seeing the butterflies come out of their cocoon was cool. We skipped the 3D movie because my daughter was fussy and I didn't want to ruin that for anyone lol the atrium was smaller than I imagined but beautiful nonetheless. There were lots of butterflies. We had fun using the guide to identify them. Upon exit, you enter the cafe which is confusing because it comes before the exit which requires you to walk through 2 different exhibits so just note that if you are buying something to eat, you'll have to enjoy it before exiting because you can't have food or drink in the exhibits although you have no option but to walk through them to get out. This was a nice one time experience but I don't think I'd pay $33 for me and $22 for each of my children to get in again. SN: I got a coffee from the cafe. I took my 4 years old niece there and arrived around 9:30. The line was very small and not much wait. The plaza itself had also a lot of other venues such as a merry go around, the aquarium , a dinosaur display and few more. It is overall quite nice. We had a blast. It did get busy shortly after our arrival due to several school trips. The 3 d short movie about butterflies was wonderful. We were lucky to be kissed by many butterflies during our visit. Overall such a great experience and my 2-year-old loves it! When we started we watched a 15-minute 3D video on the migration of butterflies. As we moved there there was a little waiting room area where we all had to slowly wait to enter the Butterfly Wonderland but once you entered it did not disappoint. It was amazing! This was such a neat experience. First you go into a theater and watch a beautifully done 3D movie on the monarch migration and then you're led to the butterfly greenhouse and it's just beautiful. You feel like you're in a fairy garden. My son and daughter both had butterfly's land on them. It was a magical experience for them.
