I am forever indebted to Buzz as it was the perfect place for me to study for my licensure exams. On a nice day, it has ample outdoor seating and, on not-so-nice-days, it has comfortable indoor seating with a relaxed atmosphere. All of their tea and coffee options are very solid but you would be doing yourself a mighty disservice if you didn't treat yourself to some baked goods. Bionic Bar: This is an absolute must try. It is essentially a granola bar made of oats, chocolate, peanut butter, agave, cherries, and pipettes. It is delicious. No other word to describe it. It is rich enough to be filling yet not overwhelmingly sweet. Funfetti Whoopie Pie: This should be your go to 'treat yourself' item if you are looking for very sweet and very dense. Imagine a huge glob of cream cheese icing in between two fluffy funfetti cookies. Also, free parking. What more could you need!? read more

Nice location with outdoor seating and a handful of umbrellas on the outskirts of Old Town. After teasing myself looking over the many desserts I kept it simple with a vegetable quiche and iced almond milk tea chai latte. Both were delicious with just the right balance of spice and sweetness in the chai. Music is barely loud enough to be heard which is JUST RIGHT to allow for easy conversations and one less distraction while reading. But the ambient tunes were just right for the environment. And for the gluten free diets, this is a place with several options to delight your sweet tooth. His was my first time here in over a year but I'll add this to my general rotation. One star --only due to lack of customer support and service. I called several times today but nobody answered and it said your voice mail is full. I called to let you know that your DoorDash site is saying you're not open even though you are. Since nobody would pick up the phone and DoorDash said you were not open, I walked in this morning and walked out due to the long line since my dog was in my car. Then i sent an email to you rather than posting this and it bounced back saying the email address isn't valid. I'm shocked by the bad reviews but I'm also new to Buzz and not aware of how previous management ran the place. With that being said I've never eaten anything here that wasn't pure bliss. The 9:30 club cupcake is one of the most decadent and sinful desserts I've ever tasted. Moist chocolate cupcake with a cream like frosting filling topped with chocolate frosting and chocolate ganache. I mean...how does it get better than that?! The mocha cupcake is also a treat as are the yo-yos (think Hostess hoho), croissants, cinnamon buns, cake pops, tarts, and scones. The only thing that could improve, as others have mentioned, is customer service and wait time. Often there is only one person at the register taking your order, heating up your food, and making your coffee. Because of that wait times can get lengthy. Poor service at checkout, additionally my sister dropped her coffee accidentally (7.00 cappuccino) and no staff offered to assist in the clean up or get her a new coffee. Why drink swings coffee at buzz when you can go to swings? They have much better service! I've been lived in Alexandria my whole life, and this is just so disappointing especially on a pleasant Saturday morning. We used to go here 10 years ago and it was an absolute delight. Key word being 'WAS'. Unfortunately when it changed management, it really went downhill quickly and somehow still stays in business. Not only did the atmosphere and vibe go from charming neighborhood gem to sterile and cookie-cutter, the food selection and quality went down. Went in a few days ago one afternoon for a bakery treat. When I asked the server which item she recommended, she grunted several times. The macaron was mediocre at best. Ily coffee is still solid - harder to mess up a cup of joe. I love Buzz so much. When I wrote my original review 2 years ago I had just moved to Alexandria and was getting familiar with the place. I have since gone back over and over again, and it never disappoints. My personal favorites are the croissant breakfast sandwich and the flourless brownie cork, but I've never been disappointed by a treat I've gotten there. Stopped in after grabbing smoothies from Tropical Cafe two doors down. It was certainly a full house, but the line/wait to order wasn't long. It was filled with patrons in the lounge. The display case showed a huge spread of desserts, but when it came time to order the main item we wanted wasn't available *insert sad face*. Opted for Oreo Cupcake, Red Velvet Cupcake and packaged Cinnamon Crumb Cake. I can only share my opinion on the Red Velvet Cupcake & Cinnamon Crumb Cake since I didn't taste the Oreo Cupcake, but my husband raved about it. The Cupcake was super moist and had a "crust" like texture right below the icing. It was SO good. The cinnamon crumb cake was great, too. What is there to dislike about Buzz? There's ample seating in the middle of the afternoon to park myself on the comfy enormous couch, crack open my laptop to get some work done, and slurp down my crisp, tart beer. I expect to spend some time working from their umbrella-ed outdoor patio when the weather cools off again. I don't really want to take home the Illy branded umbrellas like I wanted to steal the Delirium ones from The Publick House in Boston, but they're colorful and bright. P.S. Has anyone else noticed the random kitschy old-school kitchen gadgets-as-art adorning the walls? It's kind of like Hill's Kitchen vomited all over. I have this love-hate relationship with Buzz, just like everyone else who knows the "old-buzz" and now reviews the "new-buzz". The thing is: everyone who loves the old-Buzz, meaning colorful and quirky design, everything a bit unorganized and weird, but in a fun way, the million different items: it's just not that anymore. It's not Buzz. It's doesn't feel like it, it doesn't taste like it. So for all people who know the old-Buzz: yes you will likely be disappointed because there is a reason we all loved this place before. I for example loved the cakes so much, we ordered our wedding cake from here. And birthday cakes, and every single celebratory cake that you can imagine. And the amazing breakfast brioche with egg and gruyere cheese that I will never have again (so bummed). Ok, things have changed, we have to move on. The new Buzz is (and I am trying not to compare it to old buzz) a fancy coffee place, with fancy treats. The cupcakes all look the exact same, even though they are different flavors, and they are small. A few more pastries and sandwiches, one of them a pumpkin muffin which is pretty tasty. The coffee is also good, the chai is good, but all a bit pricier than I would like. One last note: customer service is terrible as it's best. Not sure if I just had bad luck the past three times, but either there was not a single person around for 5 minutes (why, how?!), or I've been waiting for 10minutes for a regular coffee (again, why, how?!) or they spend 20minutes selecting cupcakes for other people but no one else is around to take care of the rest of the customers in line. read more

Honestly, I don't think Buzz is that great. Yet I still come back sometimes, so I guess it's not *that* bad either. The coffee is average and overpriced. The cupcakes and some of the other pastries are good, but I generally go to coffee shops for coffee and a scone or muffin is an afterthought. I hate that there's a cult following of Macbook toting people who think it's the most awesomenessest thing in the entire world and all the stay at home moms that are there early in the morning who think they're hot shit because they wear yoga pants and their men can afford for them to buy expensive coffee. Ladies, yoga pants and so many cupcakes don't go together. But, here's what it comes down to: this place is two blocks from home and sometimes I just don't feel like driving down to Misha's and having to find parking. That's right, I'm a lazy ass who won't walk the 3/4 mi to Misha's before I've had morning coffee, and wouldn't walk there after because, come on, that wouldn't make any sense. So once in a while I swallow my pride and come here, but I don't enjoy it, it's more of a lazy/necessity type thing. And one additional note: I haven't tried in about a year, but at least back then the free wifi almost never actually worked. Before the interwebs were set up at my house and I hadn't discovered the yoga pant moms, I'd come here for the wifi and leave pissed after spending $8 on coffee and a muffin and getting no surfing time out of it. read more

When I first walked into the place, I gasped a bit and made some kind of sound that one might make when they see a cute baby. Kind of like an "awww", but a little more enthusiastic. I really loved the interior design - stainless steel, colorful accents, quirky black and white photography, and quite the selection of beautifully decorated cupcakes. It took me awhile to figure out which cupcake to order, because my ADD was kicking in. Too - much- stimulation. Can't - focus- on- just -one-thing. I was mulling around like a kid that needed to go to the bathroom. Just pacing. Focus Tara! You are here for cupcakes. I finally zero in on the playful bumblebee cupcake - yellow cake with chocolate goo inside, topped with a vanilla icing and a darling little pipe cleaner bumble bee. Ahh, but this might be too playful for me. Maybe this makes up in appearance what it lacks in taste? I will go more hardcore...more brooding. I lock my eyes on the 9:30 cupcake. Yes, I would be ricking a chocolate overdose, but I felt ambitious! After all, this was my first cupcake crawl. Go big or go home! The 9:30 was divine, but was so rich it I could only nibble on a bit before sharing - chocolate cake, with vanilla cream inside and topped with semi-sweet chocolate ganache. Whoa, baby! I also sampled a few other cupcakes and all were pretty good, I actually really liked the bumble bee also, but many of my fellow cupcake munchers thought it was boring and tasted like birthday cake. I rolled into Buzz early on saturday morning to pick up a dessert for a party later that afternoon. My initial thought was: cupcakes. But the siren song of their gorgeously decorated buttercream cakes were hard to resist. Smooth vanilla buttercream, adorable buttercream flowers, covering a vanilla cake. What's not to love? Well, I'm here to tell you: plug in your earphones and ignore the siren call. The cake, in short, sucked. As instructed, I left the cake out 3-4 hours to come down to room temp before serving. You'd better believe I was the first in line at the dessert table. I cut into that smooth cake, plopped a slice onto my plate and dug in. I WAS DENIED DELICIOUSNESS. 1) the vanilla was oddly fake tasting. 2) the frosting was gritty. I don't know if they used regular sugar vs. icing/powdered sugar, but oh man, the buttercream felt like it had sand particles in it. 3) Oh jesus, it was so sweet it hurt to eat. 4) Did i mention the oddly fake tasting vanilla flavour? By the end of the party, only 1/4 of the cake had been eaten (and was eaten mostly by the kids.) And nobody wanted to take any home: that's saying something. That something being "FAIL." On the positive side: the shop is super cute, the coffee is excellent, the staff very nice. But avoid the vanilla buttercream cake. read more

I seriously can't tell you how much I love this spot. For years, my go-to coffee shop was St Elmos- but recently they have been very busy, and I've been disappointed with their cleanliness. I happened to try Buzz one weekend, and now this is my go-to coffee shop! The staff and manager are always so friendly, the shop (and bathrooms) are always clean, of course the desserts/coffee are delicious, and the atmosphere is quiet and calm! The Buzz Bakery & Coffee is a little bakery located in a small pocket off of Route 1 on Slaters. The place itself is cute, with a vintage stove (non-working) and bags filled with baked goods, as well as a case offering breakfast items, cupcakes, cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, biscotti, and options for custom-order cakes. They also offer coffee, tea, wine, beer, and cocktails. I came here on an invitation to watch an independent singer perform with a few friends; I thought it was pretty cool that the bakery supports local artists! For dessert, I tried a Cookies n' Cream version of a cupcake, which I was a little underwhelmed - the cake itself was okay, but the frosting was a little too thin and did not really complement the cake too well. In addition, the mini cookies on top was stale with a funny aftertaste, so that was a little sad T___T I am not sure if it was because it was the evening, and all the fresh cupcakes were out, or if the cupcakes deteriorate that much in a day. There seems to be many orders placed for custom cupcakes by the locals, though. To keep with the review theme for Buzz, I'll have a go: On Michelle B.'s tip I sought out Buzz to see for myself what the buzz was all about. Groans aside, I was eager to try any new establishment that regularly featured cupcakes on their menu. That being said, my review for now speaks only to the cupcake aspect of Buzz. Construction on the streets leading to Buzz makes finding the location a little difficult for those, like me, unfamiliar with Alexandria. Parking proved to be the next challenge on an early Friday evening.Though a majority of the shops in the shopping center (I'm tempted to call it a contemporary strip mall?) were closed by the time we showed up the popularity of Rustico meant we were utterly without parking in the proper parking spots and ended up finding a spot in the adjacent residential neighborhood half a block away. Be sure you're really in need of your buzz before attempting to patronize Buzz! Parking stress was easily forgiven once we strolled into Buzz. Brightly-lit and colorful, I wished I had a book or time to linger, the seating looked rather inviting. Giant chalkboard menus loom over your head at the counter, a little difficult to read (some craning of the necks was had) but it was easy to see that coffee was standard fare, and the real draw - desserts - were better chosen by sight from the display cases at normal eye level. Though the cakes and chocolates tempted us, I was on my usual cupcake mission and set to work picking out two boxes of cupcakes. There was an ample selection of cupcakes - filled and unfilled. I decided to start with the unfilled ($2.25 each), saving the custard filled cupcakes for a return visit. Soon eight cupcakes were being packaged up for me - strawberry, chocolate, coconut, and carrot - a second box duplicated for football watchers who declined to make the trek to Alexandria with us. While the bakers behind Buzz know how to delectably decorate a cupcake with cute frosting strawberries, carrots, polka dots, and even a bee that hangs off the filled cupcakes, there is still work to be done on the cupcakes themselves. The strawberry cupcake tasted a little biscuit-y, points over Baked & Wired's strawberry cupcake on flavor, but needing the amazing cakelove frosting to redeem itself. The carrot cake was moist and nutty but lacked a little spice that I'm partial to with my carrot cakes. The frosting on the carrot cupcake aspired to fluffy, cream cheese heights but quite literally fell flat (and a little oily?). I would have liked a little more coconut flavor in the coconut cupcake, but it managed to be moist and tasty through both cake and frosting. The chocolate cupcake was a straightforward affair - a subtle cocoa cupcake that received thumbs up from the football fans. Given that I'm reviewing only the cupcakes and ambiance at Buzz, I'd encourage a visit for yourself. It's certainly nothing to go out of your way for, but if you've grabbed a bite to eat at Rustico or find yourself in the neighborhood, give this place a try. I plan on returning when in the neighborhood, to give the menu a fuller sample and see how they do filled cupcakes and red velvet as well. read more

I hate to be buzzkill (ouch!) but even after a second visit, my opinion of their cupcakes stands. I liked the 930 cupcake - but I'm glad I was sharing it because it was pretty rich and decadent. The bacon cupcake is a cool concept but I wasn't sold on the execution. I think instead of peanut butter as a frosting, maybe a maple frosting would be more appropriate. The bacon was also meh. I like crispy bacon and this was well, less than crisp. The "buzz cupcake" was the worst of all. It's cutely decorated but the taste of the cake+frosting is booooring. I still like the space and could appreciate their "computer-free zone" weekend so non-wireless patrons could enjoy a spot to eat and drink. In any case, the 930 cupcake is what brought me to 3 stars but unless I'm already in Alexandria for other reasons, I can't see myself making a special trip here. read more

I'm a fan, but imma be honest wit u. I ain't neva met no cupcake I didn't like. Even if the cupcake was not that good, as compared to other cupcakes, I still have managed to finish them. (Just an FYI that I'm not the most discerning cupcake connoisseur.) That being said, I think the cupcakes here are good. Now, compared to Giant and Wholefoods and Safeway? I couldn't taste a (major) difference. But I could SEE the difference. These are highly stylized cupcakes. I had one with a bee on top of it. C'mon, you don't find that at Harris Teeter. They're just much prettier cupcakes. I imagine that if I were "sweet" on a girl, I could buy Buzz's girliest-looking cupcake to give to my honey and she would swoon. Swoon! She'd be like, "Ooh, baby, you are just the bee's knees!" And I'd be like, "The bee's what? You're weird but cute, and I like that." Speaking of sweethearts, the staff here is excellent. Especially on this day, when I asked for a sundae with brulee'd bananas. Vanilla and brown sugar were my two scoops. Don't ask me how this happened, it just did! This was a creation NOT found on the menu, but a young lady there accommodated me anyway. Miss, you by yourself deserve one whole star, out of the four I've given. I've been to Buzz Bakery a handful of times with my girlfriend and I've typically been satisfied each time. I have not personally explored the menu very much-only really having eaten their cupcakes thus far, but I've thoroughly enjoyed all of the ones I've tried. The Coconut & Red Velvet flavors are both delicious! I really just go for the sugar, but based on my experience, most people seem to go for the atmosphere; there's a small lounge area for sitting & reading, studying, internet usage, etc., which always seems to be in use. Recommended it if you're looking for cupcakes and/or coffee. Most of their other stuff (sandwiches, wraps, etc.) is nothing to brag about. read more

While most gluten free products are gritty this brownie had a smoother consistency, and while chocolatey with a hint of coffee it really wasnt as sweet as I would expect a brownie to be. I am at Buzz religiously, i spend hours over there. There is something about this place that draws me back. As I am in school, along with my full time work, I have a lot to get done. Going back home makes me lazy and I have tried other places but the atmosphere is amazing. Tons of people doing numerous things. My mates always join me for a drink, my favorite five dragon tea for non alcoholic and Bailey's coffee for alcoholic drink. Try to find other cafe within the vicinity who serves alcoholic beverages till midnight. The staff are brilliantly friendly. Never had a time when it wasn't great. I came across this place by a random chance and got to spend about an hour there. I don't know when I'll be back there again, but I am surely missing the place! I went there because I was around and I needed to find a cafe to get some work done. As soon as I arrived at Buzz, I realized that it was indeed a good choice judging from the way the tables were set up for people to study and get their work done. For that reason, I found the place to be not too loud like most cafes these days. Also, the coffee was awesome, and the dessert (I got the red velvet brownies which was SOOOO delicious) was fabulous, the staff was super sweet.. I couldn't ask for more! I ended up taking their cherry almond granola home which was also really great. Buzz Bakery has been a staple in the Washington, DC for years now. Their original location in Alexandria, VA has many options for seating (from tables to couches) and has strong free WIFI. At first, you may not see many plugs, but look behind the couches to find two power strips. The coffee is good. It's from Grand Rapids, MI's famous coffee shop Madcap, which some people love and others hate (Several of my friends hate it because it tastes more acidy than other coffees. I still say Peregrine is the best coffee shop in DC). Buzz makes great baked goods, though. My favorite muffin in DC is their bran muffin (In fact, Peregrine on Capitol Hill gets all their food from Buzz). So with that being said I have had my fair share of cupcakes from various cupcake places around the DMV area and Philly. My sister got six cupcakes from Buzz Bakery. She got vanilla, pumpkin, coffee, lemon, carrot cake, and red velvet. A couple of them were moist but the other ones were dry. Having eaten other cupcakes I have to say these were the sweetest cupcakes I have ever tried. Their frosting is so sweet that after a couple of bites it becomes unbearable. Everyone in my family ended up eating the cupcake without the frosting. I know that defeats the whole purpose of eating a cupcake but that is what had to be done. I really wanted to like this place. I really did. I got the following flavors: RED VELVET - Yummy cream cheese frosting & nice touch on the chocolate curls. Overcooked cake part, kinda dry, and lacked flavor. CARROT CAKE - Good job on the same cream cheese icing. Kudos for putting real carrot in it, and loved all the raisins and nuts. The cake was overbaked again, but less dry than the others. The spice just wasn't right in it. I can't put my finger on it, but something was missing or just not enough spice was used. BUZZ - Great idea having espresso beans on the coffee flavored frosting. The cake was again, overbaked and very dry. Out of the three, I'd want to try the Buzz cupcake again, hoping that it would be fresh and not overbaked. The idea of it is fab, but the execution was bad. If Buzz would just take the cupcakes out a little earlier, they'd have a repeat customer here, if only for the Buzz cupcake alone. After going to more cupcake places and cafes.. this is still a VERY busy cafe. My girlfriend and I stopped by here on a Saturday afternoon.. there wasnt a set of vacant chairs in sight! Buzz has become my escape (pronounced es-cop-ay like Dori in Nemo of course) when the pace of the work weeks gets a little bit much. The late hours is always appreciated when I can't escape the office until 8pm. The cupcakes and coffee (or tea for that matter) are consistent and the place is loft like with concrete and plenty of conversation and casual patrons. The staff are quick with a smile - able to customize any order and seem to truly appreciate working there. I've had every cupcake before going vegan and I can say those pink little boxes make me want to run in for a s'mores cupcake with no regrets. They even have a vegan cookie and GF brownies. On the referral of Owen's Ordinary, I used Buzz Bakeshop to provide the cake for my 50th birthday party. Unfortunately, I experienced a number of issues with the owner, Katherine. All of the issues centered around poor or a complete lack of communication. As a small business owner myself, I was appalled at the issues I encountered. I will say, her Pastry Chef, Alexandra, is absolutely lovely and a marvel. She created a cake that was moist, beautiful and exactly to my specifications. My guests were truly impressed and many asked for referrals to the bakery. However, due to the difficulties in working with Katherine the owner, I could not in good conscience refer my friends. It's unfortunate that she is losing potential business simply due to bad business practices. read more

I wanted to check out this place when I read the review on Yelp. It is located in a up coming neighborhood. When I entered this place, there were a comfortable couches and small coffee tables/chairs. It is very cosy. So many people brought a lap top to work/study in this place. I went this place on Friday afternoon. There were so many young moms with small babies or kids. I have never seen so many of them in a coffee shop. I had a small cup of coffee and a chicken sandwich. I am not a big fun of illy coffee because it is not strong enough for me. The sandwich was okay nothing was special but the bread was hard and crunchy which I loved it. This place reminds of Panera bread. I prefer Panera than this place because it has more options for sandwiches. I might come back to eat cupcakes since many people are talking about them. But this is not a place to have a sandwich and a coffee. read more

I really don't know why people are so down on the cupcakes. They are tasty, moist and pretty darn decent if you ask me. They are cute too with the sprinkles. I had the vanilla/vanilla today and it was great. I liked the frosting - better than Lavender Moon (I'm not a fan of cream cheese frosting... sorry... pass the buttercream and sugar!). I'm confused why it ranked high in the cupcake wars because I've had better, but it was still good! OK - enough cupcake talk. The ambiance is very nice, subdued music, wi-fi and a pretty low-key crowd. If you come on a weekday you'll have a ton of folks on their laptops working (or Yelping, like I am right now!) and keeping to themselves. I returned back to Buzz Bakery August 15th to try their much-famed flavor-of-the month cupcake: Bacon. The bacon cupcake consists of a chocolate cake topped with peanut butter mousse and sprinkled with crisped pieces of thick-cut applewood smoked bacon. Sounds all fine and dandy right? Wrong! This cupcake, touted as the cashier's "second-fave" really leads me to wonder the staff's tastebuds! (re: previous visit & toffee cupcake) The cake itself just tasted wrong wrong wrong -- lighter fluid doused kinda wrong. Paired with the frosting that tasted like the chipped gravy poured over biscuits in dining halls, I was turned off. After several bites of disbelief, trying to *force* myself to like this cupcake after all the media it's received, the rest of the 'cake went uneaten. Shame on you buzz, shame. The trip was redeemed by some awesome Candyland and a glass of fresh, thirst-quenching lemonade. And I know it's fresh because the same guy that sold me the disgusting lard-cake fresh squeezed it and mixed it in front of me! Mmm Mmm! read more
