Stopped by for an evening dessert and it was creamy and delicious! A bit on the pricier side since it's in Old Town but worth it if you're visiting or just spending the day near the waterfront. The pistachio ice cream was so nutty and delicious! I'm a big fan of crunch and that ice cream was FILLED with pistachio nuts. This chocolate shop is super cute and smells delicious! I went in and got an assortment when we were in Alexandria. The service was fine, but a little slow. We waited a bit for help. The chocolates I got weren't that great. I got some chocolate covered cashew clusters, dark chocolate covered toffee, Milk chocolate covered toffee, a buckeye, and a chocolate covered peanut butter cookie. I tried a bite from each of them and I didn't care for any! It was disappointing! The only thing I didn't throw away was the chocolate covered peanut butter cookie. They got me wanting more. When we got there, there were a few people ahead of us but I think they may have all been together so the guy that welcomed us in immediately waited on us. He started describing everything to us and letting us know what to stay away from because of allergies and after asking a few questions he made some suggestions. There might have only been one thing that I didn't try that he suggested. Partially because he suggested but mostly because I wanted it anyway. We came in for ice cream because the other ice cream place we were trying to go to was closed but it was meant to be. We finally make all of our chocolate choices which wasn't even what we were out for. We were out to get ice cream but because of the pleasant service and variety of good-looking snacks, we stocked up. We finally get to the ice cream and there were many choices. I sampled a few things but settled on a pint or something. I don't remember what I chose but I do remember that I chose 3 different flavors. The ice cream guy gave us some fun facts that were very interesting at the time and if I weren't trying to remember it right now, I'd be able to share but all I can think about is going back and getting some chocolate and ice cream but if I remember and remember to come back and share, I will. On my most recent visit, the staff were friendly, fast, and served up a hearty small portion of classic flavors. But, at almost $20 for two small non-waffle cones, the price was a bit high. I've not tried the fudge, but my offspring says it's very rich and tasty. The special chocolate treats, like chocolate covered marshmallows and caramel apples look fab, and so do the milkshakes. Kilwins for THE WIN! This place was definitely an impromptu visit. We were initially supposed to go to Dolci Gelati, but some things we saw kind of deterred us from our plans. However, those things gratefully led us right to Kilwins. Kilwins has alllllll the ice cream options with soooo many unique flavors. To name a few, chocolate peanut butter, pumpkin pie (seasonal), and apple pie (seasonal), plus more! They also have a ton of other sweet treats, such as chocolate covered apples, different fudge treats, chocolate covered rice krispies plus more. The staff was also very welcoming... On each visit. Lol we came back for seconds (to go) that night. I ended up committing to pumpkin pie and some other ice cream that was clearly forgotten due to my infatuation with the oh so divine pumkin pie ice cream. We made a trip specially to Kilwins because we've really enjoyed it in other locations like Annapolis and DC. We were shocked to see how high the prices have become and how small the portions became. I got an $8+tax and tip small cup. It didn't even reach the top of the paper cup, it was literally a few spoonfuls but the worker weighed it and decided that was the appropriate size. While it is yummy it was just kind of absurd and not a reasonable value any longer which is a shame. read more

I was walking walking around the town and saw that there was quite a long line outside of Kilwins! This icecream shop which also had fudge and other delectable goodness stood out as the most popular icecream shop and boasted its unique and plentiful flavors. I got two scoops in a cone, and tried their superman flavor which they originated and has been around for a long time, and also got their blueberry waffle cone. I loooved the blueberry waffle cone flavor because it was such a perfect balance of sweetness, hint of blueberry, and the mini waffle bits inside was so tasteful. The superman flavor was okay though as the flavor was a bit lack luster. The ice cream was great. I'm a person who loves mint chocolate chip ice cream (I recently discovered many people think it tastes like toothpaste - WHAT?!?), and there's was really good. I was just walking around Old Town and stumbled upon the shop as I was headed to the water front. It was crowded so I took that as a sign that it must be good. And it was! Not to mention there are also lots of non ice cream dessert options as well! The missing star was for the lackluster Covid protocols. When waiting in line everyone was on top of each other. It was impossible to get space and by not using floor decals customers just did what they wanted. And even though gloves were being used, watching the staffs arms rub inside the ice cream tubs was a bit of a turn off. I get it. When it starts to run low one must dig deep. We were enjoying a relaxing stroll through Old Town after dinner when we smelled that irresistible waft of freshly baked cones and melty melt ice cream. It's a quaint little place with a cute 1950's diner floor that fits in with its est. date of 1947. I think this technically passes as studying history rather than eating dessert.. so after following some sound Vulcan logic I've deduced that these calories don't count. There's no indoor seating so be prepared to grab n dash and enjoy your decadent temptations elsewhere. This sweet shop has a lot to offer with a display case full of truffles, caramel apples, and fudge. If instead you're in the mood for something frosty, they have floats, milkshakes, and malts. They have a whole wall covered with tasty treats to take home as gifts..or you could use my method and tell yourself you're buying them as gifts and just devour them on the plane ride home..just giving you options here. The husband and I each went for a scoop of ice cream. They had my absolute favorite pistachio and I enjoyed every sweet nutty bite. The husband had mint chocolate chip in a homemade waffle cone which he slurped and crunched until it was no more. I waited after a few visits before giving Kilwins a 4* review because I wanted to be sure they were consistent with quality and. I've enjoyed Kilwins in Alexandria, VA on King Street all summer long. I actually would have never stumbled upon Kilwins if it were not for needing to find an alternative ice cream shop due to the recent congestion on King Street by the waterfront because of increased outdoor dining accommodations resulting from pandemic indoor dining seating limits. I was impressed by the creaminess of their hand-dipped ice cream and their waffle cones are very good. You know how some waffle cones taste stale, are weak and crack easily under the pressure of assembling the ice cream (if you know, you know) and lack a certain level of sweetness? Not Kilwins. I was also impressed by the fact I've visited Kilwins multiple times this summer and not once did their ice cream taste freezer burned or have an icy taste which is common with some ice cream that is exposed to condensation, "sweating" and refreezing. I grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts for most of my formative childhood and then on Oahu and Kaua'i through adulthood. I had never heard or seen any ice cream like "Superman" or "Blue Moon" in my entire life. Blue is my absolute favorite color of all time!! Any time there is a blue food or drink, I just have to try it!! So when I walked by Kilwin's one day, I saw photos of their "Superman" ice cream and literally stopped in my tracks. Ice cream will always be my Kryptonite... "Superman". (3 stars). Blue, Yellow, and Red. Primary colors! I just kept thinking about what I learned in preschool... I was mesmerized by this "tornado" of colors. I couldn't believe my eyes?! It's very hard for me to find blue ice cream, but to find a vibrant sky blue version?? I was speechless. I asked the young man behind the counter what this flavor tasted like (since we can't sample ice cream during COVID-19) and he said "fruity". I asked him if he could elaborate and he said, "No". Great, I thought. Well, I guess I'll just have to try it then. That's when I saw the "Blue Moon" sitting a few tubs away... But let me first start with Superman. Since I didn't have much a descriptive narrative to go off of. I wasn't sure what I was expecting... While the ingredients and actual confirmation of flavors is a trade secret, I'll try my best to guess. When I took my first spoonful, the flavors that I could taste were cherry and lemon. Upon my second spoonful, I could discern a banana-vanilla hybrid of some sort. Or possibly a cotton candy or bubble gum flavor!!?? The only word that came to my mind at the time was "tropical"?? So I suppose the first response of "fruity" isn't far off. The ice cream doesn't have a high butterfat content so it melts quickly and is on the creamy but thinner side in terms of consistency. Kilwin's boast a butterfat content of 14%. I prefer mine closer to 18%, but nonetheless, a tasty and fun treat to eat! Especially with a freshly made waffle bowl. The melding of flavors actually works, but i just can't eat more than a scoop of it. It's a wee bit too fruity for me. All in all, definitely a fun flavor to photograph and sample. "Blue Moon". (3.5 stars). What captivated me from the start was the beautiful vibrant yet light blue intense color staring back at me. Our eyes met, and the rest was history. Or should I say "HERstory"!! My first scoop of Blue Moon wasn't as acute as the Superman flavor was. I don't mean that in a bad way, but I noticed that the Blue Moon had a similar flavor to Superman just minus the lemon and cherry flavors... I didn't think I would enjoy the banana-vanilla flavor, but it was oddly satisfying. I can't say i could eat this flavor in batches like I could with the cookie-monster or mint chocolate chip ice cream flavors, but I could eat 2 scoops in one sitting... What I found out when I was trying to figure out what flavors Superman and Blue Moon were supposed to be is that these flavors have been in existence since the 1920s in the Michigan area??!! Wait WHAT???? I felt robbed and cheated!! LMAO. Just kidding. I grew up in Massachusetts and then on Oahu and Kaua'i (Hawaii) and wouldn't trade my childhood for anything!!! However, I wouldve been a much happier, albeit sugar-hyped, kid if I had found these flavors all those years ago!!?? LOL, its OK. As they say, better late than never. Do you ever walk in a business and say to yourself, "This is my happy place"? That happened for me recently when I visited Kilwins in Old Town Alexandria. I stopped by for a small scoop of ice cream but walked out with that, treats for my coworkers, and a smile on my face. Kordasia and all of the rest of the staff were super helpful, making good recommendations and inviting me to try different ice cream flavors before I picked the delicious rum raisin. I also bought a caramel apple to share at work (salted caramel with dark chocolate) and some dark chocolate Buckeyes and tuttles. Everyone who tried the treats loved them, and the packaging made it easy to refrigerate the apple overnight and get it to work without any damage.
