I returned back to Buzz Bakery August 15th to try their much-famed flavor-of-the month cupcake: Bacon. The bacon cupcake consists of a chocolate cake topped with peanut butter mousse and sprinkled with crisped pieces of thick-cut applewood smoked bacon. Sounds all fine and dandy right? Wrong! This cupcake, touted as the cashier's "second-fave" really leads me to wonder the staff's tastebuds! (re: previous visit & toffee cupcake) The cake itself just tasted wrong wrong wrong -- lighter fluid doused kinda wrong. Paired with the frosting that tasted like the chipped gravy poured over biscuits in dining halls, I was turned off. After several bites of disbelief, trying to *force* myself to like this cupcake after all the media it's received, the rest of the 'cake went uneaten. Shame on you buzz, shame. The trip was redeemed by some awesome Candyland and a glass of fresh, thirst-quenching lemonade. And I know it's fresh because the same guy that sold me the disgusting lard-cake fresh squeezed it and mixed it in front of me! Mmm Mmm! read more

On the referral of Owen's Ordinary, I used Buzz Bakeshop to provide the cake for my 50th birthday party. Unfortunately, I experienced a number of issues with the owner, Katherine. All of the issues centered around poor or a complete lack of communication. As a small business owner myself, I was appalled at the issues I encountered. I will say, her Pastry Chef, Alexandra, is absolutely lovely and a marvel. She created a cake that was moist, beautiful and exactly to my specifications. My guests were truly impressed and many asked for referrals to the bakery. However, due to the difficulties in working with Katherine the owner, I could not in good conscience refer my friends. It's unfortunate that she is losing potential business simply due to bad business practices. read more

I bookmarked this place a while back but it wasn't till the Don't Step on a Bee Day celebration that I actually stopped by. I love it! Walking in it's kind of like a Starbucks but more interestingly decorated (instead of the usual brown and gray and black and green) with a cooler crowd of people behind the counter. Older folks, young people, even new mothers were there. Reading, talking, basking in the 70 degree weather. In terms of atmosphere, this place gets it right although it could do with a few more seats and bigger tables. I got a cappuccino, a honey bee cupcake and a red velvet cupcake. The honey bee cupcake was great: a rich vanilla? base with a honey frosting and some sort of dark dusting on it. Topping it all off was a tiny cute little sugar bumblebee. The cappuccino was delicious, excellently brewed with the right ratio of milk to coffee. And the red velvet cake was tasty as well: moist, flavorful and topped with rich cream cheese frosting. Pentagon/Crystal City is lacking of places like Buzz, friendly and relaxing atmosphere with cool decors, comfy couches, good drinks and desserts, and staying open after 9pm. I do wish they can open one across the streets from where I live, I can see myself going there every night after dinner to have some tea and sweets and read a book or chill with some friends. So I guess I should thank myself for being lazy when it comes to driving to places, or I'd be spending way too much time and money here. It was a Tuesday night after dinner, my friend and I were craving for something sweet and ended up at Buzz after reading the reviews. I've been to Rustico couple of times but never realized I've been missing out what is next door. There were a good amount of people there but not to the point you can't find seats. We looked like we were 10 years old when we saw the display of desserts, obviously first timers. My friend got turtle cheesecake and hot coco and I had the pumpkin cheesecake to match with the season. 3 cupcakes and a brownie came up to over $15. That was a bit of a surprise to me as I love stopping by new bakeries and know $15 would normally get me 6 cupcakes, if not more. I haven't tried the cupcakes to comment on taste but the brownie was not sweet enough-tasted like a dark chocolate brownie. I couldn't even eat more than a couple of bites. I've never thought I'd spend hours at a bakery/coffee shop just hanging out. The Buzz provided hours of free internet, and delicious pastries and coffee. I needed internet connectivity, and they provided. I wanted coffee, so they brewed. Sweets... didn't need them, but it was more than readily available! Oh, the selection of delectable treats, from red chocolate velvets, to peanut butter cup cheese cake with smoked apple bacon in the cream, or their quiches for something a little less sweet. At times, I found myself riding my motorcycle around the district and somehow ending up at the front door of the Buzz... Pricey? At times, yet. Worth it? There is a lot to love about Buzz, but one giant flaw is their coffee. It's just okay, more like a 3-star latte. I really think the barista I got had an off day or just wasn't focused on my cup. But there is a lot of room for improvement. The shop serves Illy coffee which is fine, but it must be ground perfectly to be smooth. The rest of Buzz is 5 stars. The decor is very cool and the space is airy and open. It's not a large shop and customers often sit around the tables outside. The bakery is also quite good with quality cupcakes and other baked goods. I'm really not impressed with their cupcakes and their baked goods are a bit dry, but you can taste the quality. It's not a bad study or work place. And there is free wifi and limited parking on the side/back of the building. read more

I have bought 3-4 cakes from here. One for my parents birthdays & for father's day. I really enjoy how soft and tasty the cake is. I'm usually not a fan of frosting on most cakes but I really enjoy the flavor & texture of their frosting. Their staff is nice & friendly & helpful especially on big holidays. I am seriously always here every Friday! and sometimes Thursdays. It's just so perfect! I love how they're worker friendly, their baristas are so knowledgeable, and that the line is never too long or moves quickly when it is. Not to mention how delicious their deserts are. I stick to the cheesecake because it's my favorite kind of desert, especially Buzz's because of the massive candied Strawberry on top and pearl candies dotting the vanilla cream. For the price, it looks a little small, but I always have some left overs for the next day. Don't know what else to say, but that I love this location and this coffee shop is easily my favorite in old town. Oh and there's free parking! Cannot be beat. read more

The average review on Buzz should be higher than 3.5 stars, but that's Yelp for you. This place is great. We've lived nearby for years and have gone multiple times and tried many of their desserts. Every single one has been delicious. We particularly love their pies and cupcakes, which unlike some places, don't have gobs of tasteless icing- nope, Buzz's cupcakes are yum yum yum all the way through. I had high hopes for this bakery based on the previous yelp reviews. With past photos of boxes with colorful cupcakes, I was hoping to try a variety of cake flavors. At the time of my visit there were only three cupcake flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and smores. I opted out of my original plan to binge on a Baker's dozen and ordered their vegan chocolate chip cookies and blueberry lemon scone--both were actually incredible! The service was okay. It felt rushed like at a fast food restaurant. I wish they would have asked if we were dining in and offered us plates instead of paper bagging our items. I also wished they would have offered suggestions. I take a long time to decide, and like to look at everything, which doesn't help since their items are right in front of the register. If you're new and there's one or two people behind you, the other customers and staff get impatient and annoyed with having to work around you. It can get tight even with three people looking at cupcakes or pastries. However, this is a good place to bring kids or to study. They have a small play area for children and free wifi. Yum! This is a cute little bakery in the Del Ray neighborhood. They have free parking let me repeat .. free parking!!!.. not on the street but in an actual lot!! They have indoor and outdoor seating. I didn't try their coffee but I did have their buzz coffee flavored cupcake and it was amazing!!! It was a nice coffee flavor without being overpowering. They use a good proportion of cake to icing on their cupcakes unlike many fancy cupcake shops that are 90% icing. I will be back for more cupcakes and coffee soon. read more

This is one of those places like Rustico, only popular due to location - the neighborhood doesn't have a second choice. The coffee menu is limited and the coffee just isnt that good. The baked goods are gorgeous. GORGEOUS! Martha Stewart would approve the aesthetic. However, the taste is sugary rather than sophisticated. The visuals don't match the taste - or the prices. The vegetabke quiche is BLAND with one1/2 inch sliver of red onion representing said vegetables - the pastry underneath was soggy. Everything is overpriced and very, very, very pretty. Example: this is a place that sells precious. A small celephane wrapped Fruity Pebbles "rice crispy treat" is $5. Half the staff are lovely and bright, the rest are not. read more

I was in the mood for a piece of carrot cake and noticed this bakery had cupcakes in carrot, and red velvet. Stopped by and took one of each, (they are small by US standards, which was fine with me: you can indulge in the flavor without overdoing sugar intake! ). And I indulged in one called "the Buzz", chocolate with coffee icing. The carrot and the red velvet cupcakes were pleasant. But the Buzz, OMG! Just loved it! So glad I've found a new favorite place for the occasional coffee flavored cupcake. read more

HINT: Look at the date of a review. Nearly everyone hates the relaunch about as much as everyone loved the original. I loved Buzz in the 'old days.' It was a great place to grab a wonderful cup of Illy coffee, a tasty scone or a whimsical savory cupcake. Comfy, welcoming seating that encouraged you to catch up with a friend or do some work. Neighborhood parents, children, and dogs were welcomed. This relaunch is terrible. The space is cold, sterile, too white, and one of the least welcoming places I have ever paid 10$ for one coffee, one cookie, and one brownie. Gone are the fun cupcakes with innovative flavor combinations. Gone are the baristas who can make a latte at the right temperature. Gone is an ambiance that says 'stay another five minutes.' I felt like I was getting a coffee in an operating room staffed by cranky interns. Even if cold, Spartan, and blinding white is your aesthetic, if you enjoy good coffee and tasty baked goods, you'll still leave unhappy. At 3 on a Wednesday, the only cupcakes they had left were predictable flavors (red velvet, chocolate, vanilla) and "for display only." WTH is that about? A cornmeal cookie and its chemical after taste wept when compared to the genius of Joanne Chang at Boston's Flour. A 'fudge brownie' lacked complexity and quality chocolate while both heavy and dry. It's wonderful that Maggie Austin is getting a second act and I've seen some beautiful work by her. But the sad fact is that the overly ornate and delicately decorated cakes are rarely, rarely the tastiest. There is nothing redeeming about this new Buzz. I would take a Market Salamander cake over a Maggie Austin cake eight days a week. read more

Case Study 112: Kori Writes Copyright Law Paper Upon the promise to herself to wake up at 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday for an early morning run, shower, breakfast then travel to the library for 6 hours of hardworking paper writing, Kori turns off her alarm after receiving several drunk dials from friends from high school who apparently had some sort of impromptu reunion and really wanted to say "OMG HOW ARE YOU??" at 2 a.m. 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Kori wakes up at 9, continues with original plan, just a few hours late. Kori arrives at library at 12:30... stares at people, glares at loud librarians, watches little kid bang a copy of Harry Potter against some shelves. 2:30 Kori has one whole page written and realizes she has no real need to be at the library and she can get all her stuff online. Says f-it, and searches Yelp for free Wi-fi, reads about red velvet cupcakes, instant decision made. 3:00 p.m. Kori arrives at Buzz, waits for a wireless spot to open, as only "Wireless Switzerland" spots are open, eats aforementioned cupcake, has epicurean orgasm and wishes other people had stuck around Easter weekend so she could have bought them one too. 3:45 p.m. Almost two pages written, time to get back on Yelp. Summary: Kori works much better with other people around, especially when fueled with delicious sugary cupcakes, (sooooo many to chose from) and great tasting lattes which are a hell of a lot cheaper than SB's. The decor, with iis baking ware bolted to walls and 1940s ovens turned into tables is cute, but not in a distracting, ADD goes nuts kind of way. The staff is extremely friendly and if you can't make a decision between the chocolate hazelnut and bumblebee cupcakes, no fret, they have free samples. Yeah, that's right, free tiny adorable miniature cupcake samples. A.K.A: This place ROCKS and I now have a new place to study. read more

I meet a friend for morning coffee and we decided to go back to Buzz after the renovation. The new design is clean and spare, but all the surfaces are hard. This means that the noise level is much higher and conversation is difficult. The tile wall behind the order counter, coupled with the tile floors and hard chairs makes understanding and replying to the nice young lady behind the counter a challenge. (I am of a certain age with more time and money than aural acuity.) The muffin selection was very sparse. Where are the morning glories? There was only one type of scone and it was savory. There were lots of croissants that looked good, so I had one. It was okay--very flaky, but not as buttery as the best ones I've had. Unfortunately, there was no jam of any kind, and the butter was rock hard. The cafe au lait was excellent. And I left wanting more. In short, the old Buzz was much more friendly feeling and comfortable; a place to go with friends to chat over a good cup of coffee. And the bakery selection is wanting. Buzz is still one of my fave spots in town. Open early, closes late. The chocolate frosted chocolate cupcake I had recently was a vast improvement on ones I've had in the past - moist cake, creamy frosting. The biggest pain in the rear at Buzz used to be getting seating because people would camp out all day using the wifi. I can't say I blame them with all the tasty treats and drinks, comfy couches and cute decor. But it made it an unwelcoming environment for people who wanted to socialize and enjoy treats. I can't tell you how many times I'd been there with friends only to hover for awhile and not be able to get seating. But now they have restricted hours and restricted areas for the wifi folk to congregate in so that there is seating available for those of us who are there for the food. Kudos to the operations team at Buzz for making these changes so that both groups have access to seating. read more

Ummmmyeah....have you been to Buzz for breakfast? Because you should. Had their cappuccino for the first time and it was GOOOOOOOD. And I am PICKY about my coffee. Great creamy foam, great flavor. Then my husband and I split a piece of the Summer Quiche and a breakfast brioche. SOOOOOO good. The Summer Quiche was creamy and light, the crust buttery and flaky. The brioche was light, not too sweet, and had scrambled eggs *IN* it! To quote my husband, putting scrambled eggs in a brioche muffin is GENIUS. Skip the fast food breakfast-wiches and burnt coffee, and get here for delicious coffee and pastries. read more

Oh man, I am so sad to write this review. Buzz used to be, hands down, my favorite bakery in the DC area. It was not only warmly decorated, but the variety of baked goods, coffee, and alcohol was so excellent. They had some of the most creative cupcake flavors I've seen. Alas, with this complete reboot, almost everything I loved about the place has gone out the window. The atmosphere was totally sterile, and completely unwelcoming. The variety of cupcakes was very slim, and the flavors were all standard- nothing remotely creative. Gone were their old standouts like the Cookie Monster that was filled with cookie dough and topped with a mini cookie sandwich, or their classic buzz cupcake. The cupcakes and other baked goods are much smaller than they used to be, yet the price has stayed the same. I will say the cupcakes were tasty, but I can get tasty cupcakes elsewhere. Gone are all the things that made this place uniquely awesome. Bummer. read more

I'm giving this place 4 stars, but can only rate on the service, coffee, atmosphere and bran muffin I scarfed down :) We came here around 9am for coffee and were surprised that it wasn't too packed. We were helped within about 2 minutes and I wound up adding a bran muffin to my daily does of caffeine. 2 coffees and a bran muffin came to about $6 bucks or so ... not bad really. I'm trying to stay somewhat healthy and out of all the sweets and ooey-gooey goodness that lies behind the glass case I was practically licking, I went for the obvious healthy choice of a bran muffin. I had it in my mind that I would use the coffee to soften up the muffin in hopes that it would dissolve before it touched my taste buds ... I was mistaken. But it turns out ... it was amazing! The muffin was a burst of flavor, buttery, and not at all dry as I was expecting. The illy coffee was very good as well and piping hot ... maybe a little too hot! There are tables inside and outside with one area for laptoppers to hang out for a maximum of 2 hours and surf the web on free wi-fi or work on their dissertation. Buzz's is a place to come hang-out with friends for your morning coffee and pastry and not have to worry about laptops being camped out for hours on end with no place for you to park your caboose. The staff were also warm and inviting which always makes for a great experience and a place to call your local coffee shop.
