Still I managed to find a few fabrics that interested me. Visited again in early 2023 while I was in the neighborhood. What a disappointing experience. No one acknowledged me, not even when I began to pile bolts on the cutting table. Everyone seemed to be more interested in nattering w/ each other. I ended up leaving without making a purchase. Spent the last two days exploring machine embroidery at Byrne. The instructor, Michelle, was an excellent resource and I love her "can do" approach. There were many helpers walking amongst us helping as well. I had a great experience and met many nice sewists. Enjoyed two delicious lunches and came home with six projects and a head full of plans!!! read more

For some reason, all sewing machine dealers are located in the suburbs. As a city gal with no car, it's really important to me that I have the right information before I beg a friend to drive me the 25 miles out to check out a machine. Given that there is no reliable online information about pricing on sewing machines, you really have no idea whether the model you're looking at is $5000 or $3000 (though the difference between a $500 machine and a $1000 is pretty obvious). With that in mind, I really didn't appreciate the brusque talking-to I got from Byrne about people calling to price comparison shop. He said, "People call around, trying to get $5 off this machine or that one, and we don't do that here, ok?" Smart consumers comparison shop. Smart sewing machine consumers know that you're not just buying a machine, you're buying the dealer. If I'm going to drop $2,000 on a machine, I'm going to do it somewhere where I'm not treated like a jerk for wanting to know the price before I schlep all the way out there. Excellent service and friendly knowledgeable staff. Large selection of beautiful quilting cottons and notions as well as machine sales and service. This is my favorite machine dealer. Classes and support are excellent and it's a safe place to shop during the pandemic. I've purchased three machines here over the years and I am very happy with my purchases and service. read more

Byrne Sewing Connection has poor customer service. The women working here aren't friendly and seem like they rather be some place else. I have been here a few times for repairs and classes and have had a horrible experience because the people are just so rude. I recommend Jo-ann. read more

Byrne Sewing was listed as the closest Juki dealer to me... after a 2 hour drive, we arrived and couldn't have been more pleased. We met with Jess who was well informed, super sweet and very helpful. At the end of it all, I left with a Juki Haruka tl-18 qvp and my daughter purchased a Juki tl-2200 qvp. We love our machines and are very happy we made the drive. Thank you Jess! read more

There are certainly not a lot of fabric store around any more. There's always Joann's, if you want to make Halloween costumes or need some fabric to throw up on a bulletin board, but mostly it's a waste of time for anything serious. But if you're looking for very nice cottons for quilting, the choices are slim. Byrne's has fabrics. Not a lot, but it does have fabrics. It's primarily a shop where you can find sewing machines and the attachments/notions that go with them. They carry Brother, BabyLock and Bernina at Byrnes (are you sensing an alphabetical trend here?), with a huge variety of machines on site for you to test drive. They also have sergers, embroidery machines and long-arm quilting machines/frames. I purchased my top-of-the-line Bernina from them and could not be happier. Not only will they spend time with you trying to find the machine that fits your needs best, they will also provide classes to make sure you know how to use it. Although they carry top-of-the-line machines, they also have a very good selection of less pricey models. They pride themselves on working with the customer to assess his/her needs with respect to sewing preferences and financial realities. They have machines that start as low as $99. Remember, when you buy a machine at Byrne's, you are not only purchasing the machine, you are buying their tremendous follow-up service. In addition, they do in-house servicing & repair of all types and ages of machines. One of the things I like best about Byrne's (other than the wonderful staff) is the availability of classes. They have a spacious area in the back of the building that can accommodate a large number of people along their machines and various sewing supplies, easily. I have met more nice people at these classes than I can tell you -- maybe that's why the old time sewing bees were so popular? I said before that the selection of fabrics was not very big, but it is big enough to find a piece when you are in a class and need just that one thing to make your project complete. If you are looking for batiks, this might be a good place to try since that's one type of fabric that they seem to specialize in. many bolts, and a good range of colors. If you need your machine repaired (hey, I just had an "antique" Featherweight gone over), need a new machine, want to see the latest in machines (boy have they changed in the last 20 years!!), or think you might want to take some classes or just sit down & sew with a bunch of nice people, stop on by. I just bought a Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Sewing Machine and all the ladies at Byrne were so helpful and pleasant. They showed me how to do multiple things on my machine and they were very patient. Byrne Sewing offers free classes for all of their machines and I'm so excited to be able to take my machine in and learn more about it. I would highly recommend them. I signed up for a month's worth of sewing classes here because I'm still a beginner--not a novice, but a beginner. I didn't know what to expect since I had a disappointing experience elsewhere with a beginner class. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't a "formal" type of class where an instructor stands in front of a classroom while the students just follow along. There were two instructors there the whole time ready to assist whenever you needed them and with whatever you needed help with. They were both very encouraging and very patient. I made a pillowcase using the burrito method which was surprisingly easy. I used a serger for the first time in my life. I learned how to do a French seem. I learned how to piece together strips of fabric (like quilters do) and the proper way to sew a zipper. I also made a large zippered cosmetic bag which was going to be a gift, but I liked it so much that I decided to keep it! For Christmas, my husband & kids gave me a Byrne's gift certificate which I will put to good use in the spring. The store itself is well stocked with machines, sergers, notions and fabric. Please know that the fabrics they carry are mostly quilting cottons and not the variety you can find at Joanne's. However, they have beautiful cottons with designs you can't find at Joanne's. While they carry some sewing patterns, they're not from the "big name" companies. It was my first time using a pattern from the Indygo Junction line, and I found their directions easier to follow than the "big name" lines. The staff was friendly and very helpful whenever I purchased any supplies. This place gave me the confidence I needed and helped me to renew my enthusiasm and love of sewing. When I'm ready to upgrade to a fancier machine, I will come here first. read more

Staff is friendly and helpful, and I've always received impeccable service on machines I brought in. What really impressed me, as I was shopping for a serger, was the owner's unhurried demonstration of various machines, and when she realized I was looking at a top-of-the-line model because of one particular feature it had, she explained how I could do the same thing with the sewing machine I already had! Of course, I bought the next-lower priced serger--but I've told that story to many people as an example of the integrity you'll find at Byrne's. My husband was along because we were combining errands on the same trip, and far from being bored as I shopped for the right serger, he was intrigued with the in-depth explanations of how they worked. read more

Called to inquire about a sewing class for my daughter and was spoken to so rudely. As soon as I said it was for my daughter the woman said "No Children . " I explained that I was calling because I the website advertised for thirteen and up. She said oh, let me check and came back and asked me a litany of questions and said she would have to ask because their were no children. Ok fine. BUT then asked me if her sewing machine was a toy. I'm a new sewer who tried the DIY route with an online cheap-o machine purchase, YouTube tutorials, patterns, and lots of time "figuring it out" before finding Byrne. I started with the Monday night "do your own project" (may be called something else) class. In hindsight, I wish I had found and gone to Byrne in the beginning because it would have saved me days/weeks of precious time. It's really helpful to come to the classes and have someone to help you and answer all your questions. I love the people that work here, and have accomplished so much as a newbie, including aprons, skirts, and Easter dresses for my girls and a bathing suit coverup for me. I ended up having issues with my cheap-o sewing machine, so I bought a sewing machine at Byrne where they offer complimentary classes to use my machine. It's much more fulfilling and much less frustrating to work with Byrne and with experienced sewers than going at it alone. read more
