When I got the key from the sales person and cranked up the car, it had a service engine light on the dash. Continuing from there I noticed the car had a busted windshield! About a 6" crack up in front of the rear view mirror. Their website states that "every vehicle we offer has been FULLY serviced, detailed, inspected, and ready for a new home." Well, this car hasn't even been washed! Upon further inspection I notice the rear wheels are leaning in at the top, about 2". This is not by design please understand. This is an obvious alignment issue. I decide to shut the car off as it has been idling for about 20-30 minutes, the vehicle has yet to reach operating temperature, by the way, and I notice another warning light pops up...ABC Malfunction. Thats not a cheap fix at all. I ask the sales person what they did to the car before putting it on the lot, and he replied, "I don't know exactly but every vehicle we offer has been fully serviced, detailed, and inspected." Theres more to my experience but i am running out of room. So take heed. Don't waste your time, energy, gas, etc . Its pretty much in the middle of nowhere and not worth it.

I was selling my car that was registered and titled in my trust, and had ALL of the legally required documents per NC statute and required by NCDMV. They declined to by it as they said I needed to show them the entire trust. Funny, Hickory Toyota had no problem buying my car and changing the title using the same exact documents I presented to Carmax. Do not go to Carmax, go to Mike Johnson's Hickory Toyota (a Carmax participant) first and save yourself time and frustration. They offer the same if not better price for your vehicle.

The vehicle was as advertised. Vehicle and salesman were waiting for me ahead of my appointment. Was also updated by Carmax via text message about my appointment times and the required documentation that I needed to have ready. The transaction was a smooth as I've ever experienced buying many vehicles from traditional dealerships over the decades. No pressure at all to buy, unlike traditional dealerships where you get pushed constantly. Carmax lets you input most if not all of the required information online ahead of time prior to your scheduled visit- this can be done at your home computer, and I even uploaded some documents with a mobile device. The salesman and staff were very honest and helpful during the process, snd help me close the deal smoothly. If you can input your documents online ahead of time and also bring all the required correct, accurate, and up-to-date information with you, you should have no issues with the purchase process. I live out of state and they had the correct out-of-state paperwork there ready to fill out, and even had plates and stickers at the dealership so I could drive it home out of TN. I was in and out of there in less than two hours. I suspect many of the negative reviews come from people who do not have the correct paperwork or documentation, or do not have their finances in order prior to visiting the dealership. This was my first experience at Carmax and has changed the way I will purchase my vehicles in the future, as I will never go back to all that nonsense at a traditional dealership again.

Shelly was very patient (I'm not the easiest person to satisfy) and I tend to sometimes be a little hard on my reviews but I can honestly say that I have absolutely NO complaints when it comes to Smart Auto and their staff. My car was financed and I drove out of the lot in approximately 2 hours of arriving but I test drove 2 different vehicles and wasn't sure what I wanted when I first showed up. The man that done my paperwork and finalized everything(I apologize, I don't remember his name) was great as well. Tyler is also an awesome salesperson to talk to. My son and my sister have both bought vehicles through Smart Auto but Tyler was their seller, he was busy when I first went but I have to say....Shelly done a great job, no disappointments whatsoever!!!! I received a call as expected on the second day and picking up my car was just as seamless as dropping it off. I appreciated how helpful Danny was; everyone I talked to really just went above and beyond. Not to mention their pricing is reasonable. Obviously more reasonable than the overpriced dealer, but also more reasonable than the European repair shop I've used in the past.
