Our original intention, for Monday dinner, was El Novillero. However, El Novillero isn't open on Monday. Because of our location, hunger and general inability to actually pick some place to eat we decided on Caballo Blanco. I've heard nothing but great things about this place and of two friends, one gave a raving review from when he was eight. I mean, I don't make a habit of caring what an 8 year old thinks about a restaurant, but still, what the hell. We're kind of in the hood, there's a Mexican grocery store a few blocks down... IT CAN'T BE THAT BAD. Right. Caballo Blanco is nice enough. It's clean, the waitress was friendly and answered my questions without batting an eyelash. It felt home like. A little like a Mexican diner. I wanted to call the waitress Mary and watch her take a drag of her cigarette from a window watching the street. She was sweet, and quick - almost too quick. The menu is basic with a twist. You have your staples: the enchiladas, tacos, beans and rice and then a random offering of lemon chicken (but maybe that's a Mexican dish, I'm unaware of? I dabble very rarely into the realm of Mexican cooking.). I settled on the basics, the number 2: a beef taco, cheese enchilada and chile relleno. Like every good Mexican restaurant, we were given chips and salsa. The chips were flour - different. They were flakey, they kind of had a funny texture. Above all, they were oily. Oily chips in an oily coffee filter is kind of a turn off. Oh and you only get one basket of chips. The second one, and every one thereafter, is a $1.50 - it's a recession, I know, now we all know. The salsa had nice heat - nothing to rave over. The food arrived, well temperatured, heavily sauced and on one of those big oval plates in that traditionally messy fashion that is really only acceptable at an "ethnic" restaurant. Okay, so far so good. The cheese enchilada was a very standard affair: cheddar wrapped too tightly in a corn tortilla with red sauce topped with more cheese. The cheese wasn't melted in the middle, a little upsetting, but not a deal breaker. The taco was ground beef. This is going to sound snobby but, I don't like paying for ground beef tacos and that's just how I feel. The flavor was right, the shell just crunchy enough. It was enjoyable. The chile relleno was different. I LOVE chile relleno, it's one of my favorite dishes. I try them EVERYWHERE! This one, I didn't love. The batter tasted funny. Not interesting-funny, like a not-good-foreign-funny. I've never tasted a chile relleno like this. Unfortunate really, I was hoping it would save the day. My rice was hard, the beans were good, the dressing on the little salad pile was nice and tangy and the red sauce that was the back drop for my food items was well done. In a city with Little Luis Jr.'s and Taqueria Maya's and La Favorita Taqueria, I expected Caballo Blanco to be, on par, if you will. I don't think Caballo Blanco is bad, I think its just okay. It's one of those places with life-long patrons that order the same 3 things, that come in the same 3 days a week and sit at the same table, at the same time. It is what it is, and that's just it. I'm sure that once upon a time Caballo Blano was something to behold. It has all the makings of someplace that could be good. I think it's fallen from grace - too bad really. Will I be back? Such a disappointment! I tried to keep a positive attitude, but now I'm admitting to myself that this place was yuck. Yucky chips and tomato drizzle as dipping sauce. I can't call it salsa because it was more like tomato juice. Slow, slow slow! Food okay, passable. Too costly for what I got. Caballo Blanco. The name alone sounded regal enough to want to give it a shot... My boyfriend and I were craving some good ol' Mexican to rid us of our Sunday morning hangover...So we traveled the distance into South Sac and I can now say, should have just went to the Taco Bell up the street. The entrance is a bit awkward, being that the bathrooms and kitchen are the first things you see (how appetizing). Once you get past the hallway of where your food is made and where your food is rid of, you hit the hostess stand. They told us to seat ourselves. I should have hit the door when I had noticed that every table in the restaurant was up for grabs. We sit in a booth near a window, which must have been hidden because service seemed to be so SLOW with everything. Perhaps the chefs were catching the pig in the back for our Carnitas? Perhaps not. Because that pig was definitely dead and sitting in that pot for about 4 weeks now, or so it tasted. I'm pretty sure they ran out of SALT in the spice cabinet that day because everything about my meal was bland. The salsa that was served with the chips wasn't bad, but I had requested something a little spicier with my meal. Their only option was canned jalapenos, so i settled. Charged me a $1.50 for 3. Seriously? The taquerias hand those out like halloween candy! So disappointed in just about everything about this experience. I gave 2 stars only because the girls wore Mexican tunics and I got to hear some classic Vicente Fernandez. Congrats to them on their 50th year anniversary though, apparently they are pleasing some people......I just know we were definitely not part of them. read more

Had dinner here tonight with my family and needless to say we all left full and satisfied!! The ambiance and decor of the restaurant has a rustic authentic feel to it..i like it! The tortilla chips and salsa prior to our meal were outstanding!!(almost addicting) my teenage boys scarfed down the basket of chips so fast..but no need to worry because the sweet lady replaced with another basket just as fast! Forgot to metion a bowl of mexican soup came out which was delighful...by this time all of our entrees came out looking beautiful and plentiful. Each of us had a different plate and all were outstanding! This is a hidden gem that is not hard to find...ive passed this place a thousand times...im glad i finally stop by to have dinner. read more

We were in Sac last night and decided to stop and have dinner here. My husband and his family use to come here all the time. Last time we were here was probably 25+ years ago. I don't remember how it was back then but the hubby said the chips were just as awesome. So first off they give you homemade fried flour tortilla chips. These things are addicting! So tasty but you will get full so watch out because their portion sizes are huge. I had the chicken taco dinner. It was good. Wasn't the best I ever had but wasn't the worst. Now my husband had the rib eye. Omg I wish I would have got that because that was delicious. Everyone else had some sort of combo plate and they all enjoyed their food. I would give their food 3 stars. So why the 4 stars? Because their service is freaking AWESOME! Those girls were so nice and fast and kept coming over to see if we needed anything. That alone gave them 5 stars but I went in the middle and did 4. Seriously I was blown away by their service. It made me realize it's been awhile since I've had great l service. This is one of my fave Mexican restaurants due to the quality of the food & they serve flour tortilla chips which are scrumptious. They serve a soup with the meal which is like a combo of vegetable & minestrone. However the service is mediocre..they never chk back after serving the dishes. And recently, which made me so mad that I left after trying 2 order,was that they had put a coupon in our neighborhood magazine offering 2 meals @ about $12. The coupon had no stipulations or expire date. Yet when I presented the coupon 2 my server, she said it was unacceptable & that a person had 2go online for it to be. I asked 2 speak 2 the mgr & she said they didn't have one that nite. it was a mistake going here. yep. i failed at never judging a book by its cover. i expected a totally different place. i was hoping for a Los Jarritos style place. i felt like i had gone back in time. It was dark, cold, and eerie. only a couple other customers were there for lunch. we figured we'd give it a try since we have been driving by there for years and always wanted to check it out. service was slow but cordial, our waitress was always smiling. menus need to be cleaned more often. both our menus were greasy and sticky. the wife ordered the carnitas plate and i got the chile relleno plate. i figured that since the prices were on the steep side, that we would get big plates with enough food to take home. another bad assumption on my part. smaller than expected plates, reasonable portions for a single meal, beans were dry and crusty on top, yet tasted ok, the rice was lukewarm at best, even my kid didnt want it. carnitas were crispy and flavorful but not outstanding. Los Jarritos and La Espernaza have way better carnitas for half the price. the fried flour tortillas were different, yet not the best. too greasy and they smelled fishy, as if they had been fried in the same oil as fish. weird. i squeezed the chile relleno with my fork and it oozed more than expected oil. o soaked the oil on a napkin and cut the chile in pieces. no tortillas were brought with my plate so i had to ask for corn tortillas. made 3 tacos w the chile which were decently good and filling. fluffy and cheesy. 1 star for the salsa and 1 for the chile relleno. asked for a box for the carnitas and it took way too long making us late for our game. even at the end, the service was slow. first and last visit. 8o( read more

Um, yeah... I just got back from Caballo Blanco. That was the WORST experience of my thirty-nine years on earth. Perhaps, I am somewhat biased as I have been vacationing in México for fourteen consecutive years and know what Méxican food tastes like, combined with living in San Francisco for fifteen years, but, what a total and complete disappointment! After starving myself all day so I could have my cheese enchiladas, beans and rice my good friend and I drove all the way to Caballo Blanco expecting to tantalize our taste buds. Immediately on arrival, like I always do, I asked for 'the hottest salsa available' and was told by the server that they 'don't make hot salsa because people complain it's too hot.' Ok, I thought... how about putting some jalapeños in a blender with some of the salsa you serve? No, that would be too much work. I work in a restaurant and it's crucial that one does everything possible to make their guests comfortable and accommodate them...at any price. I will walk to another restaurant to get someone butter if they want it! Nope, not at Caballo Blanco. Tuff s*@&%t.... we don't have any. It's not like I was asking for steak and mashed potatoes! I wanted hot salsa! Come on!!! The food comes out and (thank god for the nasty flour chips/wontons or I would have starved!) (Um, does anyone have sweet and sour sauce for the damn chips???!?!?!?) I had ordered the cheese enchilada plate. Not only were the beans cold and the rice drier than sand in Death Valley, the corn tortillas that were wrapped around the fake cheese weren't even fried. It's a freakin' cheese enchiliada. Fry the damn tortilla! I could have done the same thing at home for $1. Furthermore, I didn't know they were going to use government cheese. He ordered the chimichanga after being told flat out that they do not make half chicken half steak fajitas! Why the hell not? It's fajitas! Put half chicken and half steak on the grill! How hard is that!? The chimichanga was some canned chicken put in a tortilla and then smashed to death in a George Foreman Grill! Uh, I may be a white boy gringo, but i speak fluent Spanish and respect the Méxican culture and people and their food very much... and, I know for a fact that a chimichanga is round... not smashed like a quesadilla! If he wanted a quesadilla, he would have order a quesadilla... and probably got a chimichanga. I could go on and on, but he sent it back (by standing up and taking it to the counter because no one ever came back to see if the food was ok) and then was given ATTITUDE because he didn't tell the staff sooner! You have got to be kidding me!!!!! Now, I want the world to know that I am not the type to rip on a restaurant unless I am totally and completely outraged! I spent $20 on a meal that was not only a horrible experience, but a horrible display of the Méxican culture. For the love of god, you will, by far!, have a much better experience by going to a) El Novillero b) La Placita c) 524 d) Vallejo's e) hell... Adalberto's f) oh yeah, go to JIMBOY'S! (We actually drove by Jimboy's on the way home and we both laughed out loud and said, 'we should have just went to Jimboy's!') g) that taco truck by Raley's on Folsom Blvd. at Hwy 16! Chips were amazing. Food was decent. Service was terrible. We were not even greeted when we walked in the door... the hostess just pointed to a dirty table. It took them forever to bring us chips and salsa and then sat them on a table next to us while the server took another 5 minutes looking for something to wipe our table off with. The chips were so good we asked for a refill she said ok... then came back 5 minutes later chipless and told us it would be a $1.50 for a refill. The tortilla chips are made from flour tortillas. After several visits, I'm not sure if I love them, but everyone else really seems to. The food was not all that great my daughter found something in her food and when I told the waitress she sent someone else to tell us that it was part of the cooks apron, because he didn't use a pot holder. Wow. The food was great and the service attentive and had patience for me and my fellow diner due to not knowing what to order. The decor was nice, refills on chips and water without even asking. The deluxe chicken and beef enchiladas were delicious! My only --not so great items were the rice and beans. They tasted somewhat old and dried or extra cooked when warmed to melt the cheese or something. I gave one star because the chips havent changed, they are still the home made tortilla chips, and the waitress was nice, although she seemed pre occupied. The enchiladas seemed as if they were warmed up in the microwave, and were very hard. After getting our food we never seen her again, and had to stand up front to wait for someone to notice, it was about 8pm so it wasnt too busy. My favorite carnitas in Sacramento. Crispy on the outside and savory on the inside. I have yet to find a restaurant that can compare. In addition to that, their homemade chips are a game changer. I've been going to Caballo Blanco since I landed here from El Paso, Texas back in 1991 (20 years). Now, granted, Cali restaurants have NOTHING on the Mexican food from El Paso, but Caballo Blanco is a really good alternative. Their caldo (soup) is the BEST and my daughter and I eat it as an entree every time we go in there. The menudo (although the portion size is a little on the light side) is the best in town. Love the chicken tacos and nachos. And yes, its a little on the pricey side but the staff, the service, and the food are worth it, in my opinion. read more
