This place was recommended to me by Reddit looking for restaurants in the area with the best salsa. Decided to try this place first. Salsa was in fact on point! I ordered from Door Dash a 3 combo plate to split between my husband and I, as well as a large salsa. It didn't say that it came with chips, but most places give you chips when you buy a tub of salsa. I had chips at home so I was willing to gamble. They did not include chips. Okay. Noted. Shredded beef taco was tasty, I'd totally order again. Cheese enchilada came to me cold and unmelted, stuffed full of unmelted shredded cheese. The chile relleno was also cold. However once I put everything in the oven and heated up and melted cheese, the food was great! So the take away, maybe don't order to go. We went on Cinco de Mayo, arriving around 7:15 PM. It wasn't busy, so we were seated right away. Service was quick at the start--chips and salsa came out immediately and my strawberry margarita was made promptly. I mentioned I don't like overly sweet margaritas, and while they offered to adjust it and added more strawberry flavor, it still came out pretty strong and wasn't my favorite, so I didn't end up finishing it. We also ordered a small side of guacamole, which was fresh but a bit small for the $5 price point. Throughout the meal, service was attentive, but it felt like multiple staff members were helping tables rather than one dedicated server, which made things a little inconsistent. For food, I ordered a build-your-own plate with a cheese and chicken enchilada, a crispy chicken taco, and a side tamale. My friend ordered combo meals to go. The food came out pretty quickly--about 10 minutes. The standout for me was definitely the tamale--the masa was flavorful and well-textured, the sauce was very good, and it had a solid amount of meat inside. The crispy taco was also excellent--perfect crunch, well-seasoned, and easily my favorite part of the meal. The enchilada was a bit disappointing. It came without cheese as requested and ended up being more chicken and potato than expected. The green suiza sauce was also very light, so it didn't add much flavor or coverage. Overall, I can see why this place is recommended. The crispy tacos and tamales were definitely the highlight for me, and I would come back for those alone. On top of that, a waitress made a racist comment towards my family and I. She assumed our ethnicity and said "ni hao" to us when we already greeted her in English. We're not even chinese. I had been going here 40 years. It was the go to Mexican restaurant of mine and my late husband. He passed 10 years ago so I haven't had the heart to go back without him. But I finally did on what would have been our anniversary. It's alright but it's not the same. Food has lost a lot of its flavor. They used to have the best red sauce on their enchiladas. Now it's pedestrian nothing special. And of course the homemade fried flour tortilla chips are gone replaced with common bagged tortilla chips. Shame...nothing ever stays the same. Around for ages, older than most patrons and even servers here, Caballo Blanco is a Sacramento Mexican dining staple. Upon walking in there's cobblestone and wood all over the place. The place feels old and historic but by design. It's well kept and clean. My grandparents met here on the second floor back when it was open at night for live music and dancing. Knowing that holds a special place in my heart. So I'm inclined to like the place. Last Friday was only second visit here. Why my mom never brought me here growing up knowing her parents met here, I will never know. But the food is damn good here! Its authentic classic Mexican dishes make me want to try everything on the menu. The complimentary chips and salsa are the perfect starters to a great meal. Then the soup that is included with every entree are like a small hug from an old family member. The broth is hearty, the noodles and perfect. I could eat a huge bowl of it. The guac appetizer is creamy and flavorful, would recommend. The carnitas here are juicy yet crispy, they also serve a lot of it . Tortillas served with every dish are handmade and taste spectacular. Their beans are really good but I'm not sold on the rice. Went with the steak on my last visit and that hit the spot! Servers here are attentive and friendly. The crew here is tight knit and get people in and out in a timely fashion without the hurry up feeling. Caballo Blanco's food impressed my fiancee and I within the first few minutes of our visit. Her and I will be back again and again as it is now one of our favorite Mexican restaurant options in the Sacramento area. read more

Upon entering we were able to seat ourselves no wait time. Our servers was Lupe & Pepe they were more than accommodating with personality plus. We ordered the Skirt Steak Enchilada with Rice & Beans and Filete De Pescado with rice & Beans. Our food was served piping heat hot and oh my goodness the food was AWSOME! Packed with lots of flavor. Yes this restaurant is still fire. I haven't been here in over 30 years. However, after 30 years I finally returned and it was everything I remembered it to be. The restaurant is older but it's clean and the staff is amazing. It's not to noisy and very inviting. The food is fire, I had the 2 beef taco and cheese enchilada combo. Caballo Blanco is past sixty years of having the best table chips in Sacramento, possibly the world. Don't forget your food is coming after though. Got the spicy chicken. Their spicy actually is spicy, not Burger King angry fries fake spicy. You won't not take stuff home. I am stuffed but somehow still hungry for more. This is not light Mexican food for those on diets such as myself, though the salad is good. They serve soup before dinner but not worth mentioning. Good service and still sane prices in 2024. This spot is a great spot to get some OG mexican food. They have a big space and plenty of parking. They have a good size menu but I usually go for the combo plates because you get a lot of food for around 15 bucks. All the plates come with rice and beans, and the meal starts with chips and salsa, which is solid. My go to is a crispy beef taco and enchilada. Both are covered with cheese and delicious. You will get all the authentic mexican food feels. There are other options for meats, and they have burritos, tostada, quesadilla, etc. Definitely a staple on Franklin that is worth trying if your nearby. read more

We went to el Caballo Blanco for the first time today. As others have noted, BEST tortilla chips in town. We base a Mexican restaurant on the chile verde (outstanding), the chile relleno (I had a bite of my husband's, and want to have my own the next time we go there), and the carnitas (sampled my son's and que rica!) the portions are so big that we have enough for dinner tonight. If you've had the flour tortilla chips at Novillero, they're not the same consistency/texture. #8 Ocho combination plate: 1 beef taco and 1 cheese enchilada, which came with salad, rice, and beans. The cheese enchilada was good; the crispy beef taco held its own. Service was attentive and the meal was filling without being overstuffed. It was really small, asked for sour cream inside and they gave me a cold brick of sour cream that I guess your supposed to dip your burrito into the sour cream? The free corn tortilla chips were delicious and fresh, you can tell with how warm they were and they were yummy. But we also ordered for an additional cost, the flour tortilla chips and they were so good too and so fluffy. The salsa was good but pretty spicy. The complimentary soup was great it tasted like something homemade with some veggies, pasta, and tomato broth, and it didn't have any meat. I ordered the 3 items to make your own plate. My 3 items were: crunchy carnitas taco, carne asada taco, and the cheese enchilada. The cheese enchilada was pretty good but, not my most favorite thing on the plate. The tacos were very delicious, the soft taco with carne asada was stuffed with meat and it was soo tasty. The crunchy carnitas was so delicious as well. I went alone during a recent visit from San Diego, I lived in the neighborhood my entire childhood and even played on their lemon hill little team team in the very early 60's I was in kindergarden at St, Patrick's. The service and food is always spot on... even during COVID. they always made us feel welcomed as soon as we are seated. All the staff are super friendly. We always pay the extra cost for the flour chips. I have not had a dish I did not like. But our favorite carne seca de jalisco is no longer on the menu but still available to order. The crispy meat in the sauce is soo good. They serve you a nice bowl of soup if you order a meal. The salad dressing is spot on. Today we also ordered the burrito grande wet (red sauce). Me and my mom were hungry and decided to take the kids here to eat since we haven't been here for many years. Wen we arrived a friendly young lady told us to sit wherever we wanted so we went to the dinner room on the left and sat at a huge table. After waiting 10min without receiving a menu I got up and asked the owner for menus. He seemed irritated that we sat at the table but gave me menus and another woman that works there come and tells us we had to move to another table. I explained the girl told us we could sit where we wanted but ok. G Wen they brought the chips and salsa I was very disappointed to learn they no longer make those flour tortilla chips. I've always loved how they have their own homemade chips ... Iget so full on the chips everytime because they are so good ... the food is good I'm sorry but not enough for 5 star but it's really good...
