Never purchased from cabelas.com, never been to a Cabela's store, remember flipping through one of their mail order catalogs more than a decade ago... So when I heard we were getting a Cabela's store in Reno I was certainly curious and somewhat excited to see what all the hula baloo was about. Well, my intent was to go much sooner to check it out, but you know how that goes... We didn't end up making it there until several months after it opened. It ended up working in our favor to actually wait until the blur of people faded away. Same experience, less commotion. I've gotta say that the coolest thing about the store are the taxidermic (stuffed dead animal) displays. There are two large "scenes" in the middle of the store and the back of the store. The one in the middle has the elephant and other large mammals. I never knew elk were so gigantic! I'm not a hunter but I think the displays are done very well and tastefully--well, as tastefully and dead animals can be represented. At least they went through the trouble of creating miniature natural environments instead of just mounting heads all over the walls (which there are also many of these). My daughter enjoyed the displays as well and it gave us a chance to address the subject of hunting and death. Whenever I ask her why the lion killed the zebra, she says, "Because he was hungry." Hah, cracks me up every time! Selection is pretty astounding. Tons of just about everything outdoorsy--not just hunting and fishing stuff. And if looking at all those animal displays gets you hungry for some meat, you can get your fill in the cafe located inside the store. Cool. There's also a pre-packaged foods department where they have handmade fudge. It was actually quite good and the price was reasonable at $6.67 per pound. Prices for all other items are competitive. They're not the lowest in the land, but their selection allows you to get more shopping done in one stop. I picked up a small monocular while we were there and later took it back to exchange for a full-size pair of binoculars. Customer service was helpful. Cabela's has a 100% satisfaction guarantee so even though the binocs I ended up getting were $10 more than at Wal-Mart, I felt better about buying them here knowing I could bring them back if they didn't work out for me. Overall, the store was clean and the employees were helpful. The front of the store features a cool bighorn sheep statue created by a local Reno artist. My wife noted a small glitch. The interior designers overlooked the usability of the checkout counters by installing highly textured countertops instead of smooth ones. The checkout person had to pull out a random piece of cardboard for her to sign her credit card receipt. The location is kind of a pain to get in and out of and I can see that it would be confusing during really busy times. It's fun to go out there and I think it's a great asset to the retail landscape in Reno. read more

"Woah," I said, as my boyfriend and I walked into Cabela's. "This is the Mecca of all things outdoors!" he exclaimed. Ahead of us was a ginormous, catherdral-ceiled, packed-to-the-gills mega-store of STUFF, complete with mounted animal heads, and water fountain display with life-sized animals in situ. The AMMO section dominated the entrance display and our vision, with racks upon racks of clothes and gear available for our perusal. If only we had that much time....we were en route to Burning Man, and made a short pitstop because we'd heard Cabela's stocks above and beyond REI. Unfortunately, there's no Cabela's in California, so we *had* to check this place out. True enough, Cabela's makes REI look like a fart in the wind by comparison. We're not hunters or fishermen, but we were looking for a certain kind of awesome tent to survive extreme weather conditions and Cabela's did not disappoint (have referred at least one friend to Cabela's and that tent, and he too bought it and loves it). Also my boyfriend found a Carhartt rain-proof jacket for a lot less than what was being sold at fancier, similar stores in Tahoe, so he was stoked. I'm currently waiting on a pair of base layer pants from their After-Christmas Sale, after speaking to a very nice customer service rep about correct sizing. The only reason I am giving them any stars at all, is strictly based on their variety of items available for purchase. The store itself is beautiful and they have a great collection of items, however the customer service is absolutely terrible... particularly if you are a female. I have given Cabelas the benefit of the doubt several times over the past few years when making large purchases, and without fail, each time that I go there the service is awful, unless I am with my husband. I have made several purcahses for not only myself but him as well over the last few years, and always end up purchasing at Scheels or Sportsmans Warehouse. I do not even get acknowledged when I go into Cabelas, it is ridiculous! I highly recommend Scheels and Sportsmans Warehouse for not only exceptional customer service, but great variety and prices as well! read more

What a classy place! It is full of a variety of quality sporting goods and the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. If they don't know the answer, they will find somebody that does. Some sporting good stores try to pull the wool over your eyes or tell you something that is not true. There are stuffed animals such as big horn sheep, lions, etc scattered throughout the store. The merchandise is arranged tastefully. They stock all types of ammunition, even those that are rare. Prices are a little expensive, but they have sales throughout the store. If you are in the area, it is worth stopping by. Parking is free and there is plenty of it. read more

This place is awesome to check out. Every time I head to Reno I have to stop by Cabela's. This is a huge store that you could easily spend a couple hours in, even if you don't buy anything. I ended up looking through their sale ad while I was there and buying a generator for a great price. The firearm section is very big and definitely my favorite spot to browse around. The prices are pretty average from what I saw, but there were a few guns on sale. The wildlife displays are super fun for the kids to check out. Giant aquariums with a ton of fish. I wasn't a fan of their restaurant. We had burgers and they were pretty average. I wish we had saved our money for lunch and stopped somewhere else. read more

I went in with 3 other women looking for fun pink accessories for our weapons. What a joke! I had heard such great things and was very excited to stop on my way to Reno. I live near the BassPro shop in Manteca, Ca. In every way the BassPro shop is better. First off the service was terrible at Cabela's I was ONLY asked if I need any help inside the part that sells fudge. That lady was the most wonderful person in the whole dang store. On the sales floor near the ammunition and accessories we were ignored completely. This store had ONE pink accessory on the shelves that had to do with hunting or firearms. While I did see some pink clothing there was very little targeted toward women. My friends and I felt very out of place and decided to leave and visit BassPro when we got home. I had such high hopes for this place and will never set foot in there again its not worth the stop I can get rude service at a Walmart closer to home. read more

So I have been coming to Cabelas for years, and I've never had a bad experience. The staff is always helpful, in a great mood and always willing to answer any questions you might have. I went there last night, windy and raining, and found excellent deals on ammo, so I loaded up. Tamara rung up my order, and was very pleasant, even though the store was soon to close. So, I'd definitely heard of Cabela's before being that I've dated outdoors-men. I placed an order online for my backpacking trip and had it delivered to the store so I didn't have to pay shipping. So........ I parked outside and came across a gorgeous statue outside and as soon as I walked in I said WOW, it's IKEA for hunters. Crazy place. It's really cool inside if you're into seeing dead stuffed trophy animals. They have everything. I mean everything. Cabela's and their staff will help you in finding all your needs. Additionally, they provide pink fishing rods, if your princess wants to tag along on your excursion. Guns, archery, fishing equipment, model trains, ammunition, camping gear, snacks, work out clothes, furniture, and even pepper spray...they have it covered. I really enjoy shopping here. The staff is always helpful. They have an excellent selection of hiking shorts, shoes, and boots. (I'd prefer if they had a better selection of hiking poles, but I can always find those at REI.) They even have different types of wood chunks for use in my smoker. On my last trip through the store I ventured into the Archery area and found that they have an indoor archery lane. I was able to see a person trying out a bow before purchase. Very cool. The prices are competitive and the sales are usually very good. Best to come here on weekdays since the weekends are usually a madhouse. read more

Love just Love the butter pretzels here... seriously... there is nothing better in the entire store... the butter braids as they are labeled are unbelievable! I dare ya to eat just one... but as everyone else has noted... this is Home Depot or Ikea for outdoorsmen/hunters/campers/etc its insanely awesome! I also love the gun selection. Some great deals on ammo from time to time, but primarily it is all about the awesome selection. Wow, this place is crazy! My mistake in thinking it was a sports store. This is specifically an outdoor recreation store. Like a Costco of camping, boating, fishing, archery, hunting, and more. If you want some camouflage wear, they have it. You want rounds for your shotgun, they have it. Need a spare decoy duck? Yep, this is the place. I didn't buy anything, but I had a blast walking around. So many large animal displays through the store (though I'm NOT a fan of taxidermy or hunting) that were pretty darn impressive. The aquarium is not bad either. My favorite part of the whole store was the shooting arcade. I got my $1's worth of fun. Almost bought some buffalo jerky from the 'General Store' until I saw it was $39.99. $5.99 for four sticks of and elk, venison, buffalo jerky pack. We did buy a $5 bag of kettle corn out front. If anything, get some of that - it was light and slightly sweet. The bag didn't make it back with us to Tahoe. read more

Staff is very friendly, like the greatest staff at any business I have been too. It's very large so they have just about anything you could need from an outdoors store. They also have a cafe, which i don't know if this is a normal cabela's thing but it's very good. I did not expect the food to be as good as it was but the prime rib sandwich was just delightful. Love this place and every time we hit Nevada we have to stop and stock up! Huge selection of things and unlike Bass Pro this place has great prices and REAL sales. Only down side is pets aren't allowed? We left them at home after researching the rule for the store and calling in to ask just in case. Was told no so the dog stayed home. When we got there we found 4 other families that had their dogs... Looking through the tips I see there are runs outside apparently? Would have been nice to know. Anyways you can defiantly spend a few hours in here. Even if u don't plan on buying much grab a cart anyways because I almost guarantee u will leave out of here with more than what u thought u needed! read more

This place is interesting in that there is a lot to look at inside the store and they even have a laser firing range which is fun for kids and adults too. It's also novel for those who have never been in to a Cabela's. In terms of pricing, I didn't find the prices very good as most of the items were priced at retail. You will not typically find bargains here but it's a fun place to shop nevertheless, even if you don't buy anything. read more

This is an interesting store with taxidermy displays of animals and a fresh water tank filled with sports fishing fish. Unfortunately, I had broken zipper problems on both of the items I bought. When I tried to return them with my receipt they gave me trouble because I had the items for longer than 60 days. I was able to have an alteration place fix the snow jacket but the white color didn't really match well if you look at it closely. (The alterations person did the best she could at Society cleaners). Be extra observant of their returns policy. Just off highway I80 the Garson Road exit next to Boomtown. Follow the signs as its a bit tricky to get to their parking lot and to get back on east I80. I've ended up in the wrong lane before hand had to drive to Gold Ranch to turn back to Reno. read more

One fucking hour in the fire arm dept. asking for help regarding scopes and the "pro of scopes" passed me off to 6 (SIX) other employees that "might know" what I need finally get around to the "pro" and he didn't know left from right. They have people whom specialize in shoes working in fire arms people whom specialize in knives working in fishing. Fuck Cabela's. Finally got around to getting the scope I needed and they got it wrong 3 (THREE) times left with nothing! Never again! read more

I love this place! Linda in optics section was very rude, and had behavior I have not experienced in a customer service/sales industry in a very, very long time. And before it was from a teenager, not a mature adult. It's too long to type here, but if management wants to reach out, I will explain. Unbelievable! I spend so much money at Cabela's it's not funny. I would bet I've been there 50 times in the last decade living in Reno and have never been treated with anything but kindness, except by Linda in binoculars. To sum it up, Cabela is your number one place for all your outdoor needs. If you want all the fishing gear you need, get it here. If you need anything with hunting or shooting, they got it here. If you want some DELICOUS fudge, they have it here too. On a sidenote, if you love country, you'll probably love this place too! The reason why I put four stars though is that I've only gone here twice just to stroll around but when I come here a little more often and actually need something, perhaps my rating will go up or down. read more

I love this place! It's huge and it's very nice inside! They have a restaurant inside also with BBQ, yum! There's a great selection on ammo, guns, bows, clothing, etc. However, because ammo has been scarce in California, everyone's making their way out to Cabela's and stocking up. So, we were not able to buy the ammo we were looking for because it was sold out. We still enjoy coming here to look at the other stuff they have and their clothing is great too. read more

While on a visit to Cabela's to day 09 01 1920 we found a good deal on hunting seats. However I asked an employee the price on some un marked slippers (Christina I believe) she went to the back to find out and never came back I got tired of waiting. Asked an employee where the 410 shells are and he insisted on showing me 12 gage and 20 gage shell I reminded him more then once I was looking for 410 shells finally it must have sunk in and he said they only had just a few and I would have to look for them. Its worth the stop! Driving into or out of Reno you'll notice a huge building next to Boom Town with the name Cabela's on it. Its a huge outdoors man store with everything under the sun that you might need to camp/fish/hunt. They have stuff for your RV, your ATV, and even your casual picnic. The most impressive thing about Cabela's is their gun department and their gun library. There's literally thousands of guns for you to look at. Wow, 5 star all the way. We walked into this monster store and totally impressed. The café has samples of Bison , Elk and beef that they put in their sandwiches. What a great place to eat. They have a arcade shooting gallery and a gun museum, for sale guns, and a great candy shop with venison jerky and fudge, what a funny combo, but people were lining up. Great place to stop & peruse while making your last stop for gas before leaving the worlds most depressing city: Reno. All the ammo you can cart, dead stuffed animals a plenty, camoflauge anything (and I mean anything), and did I mention they have an item called the Jerky Blaster?
