Even by the standards of industrial parks this one looks rough, but once you're inside you'll find something more akin to a trendy pub than your stereotypical brewery, with beer, wine, and tapas style food made by a chef! A flight of 4 samples is $10, with 8 offerings available (when I visited at least). The beer menu changes about every few weeks, although they try to retain a few 'standard' beers on tap. Wifi available. Zoo Berliner Weisse Ale: Fruity and tart...and surprisingly good. Tart beers have been hit or miss, but this one is worth a repeat. Vanilla Bean Imperial Stout: Boy, they weren't kidding about the vanilla. Not bad, although probably not a repeat for me. Sidetrack Saison: Farmhouse style; decent enough, but not enough to warrant anything special in my notes. Casey Jones Pale Ale: Another one where my notes fail me. Didn't dislike it but nothing to write about. Citra Wheat: Very light, but for some reason it was my least favorite. If there's one thing that really sets Caboose apart, it's the food menu. Yes, they have a chef, and according to my server 'something' will change on the food menu weekly, even if it's only the seasoning of one of the plates. I wanted to try this place out ever since I saw it opened per the keg with sign right off the wo&d trail. It is in a strange location but great for people who are walking or biking on the trail. The place was packed late Saturday and it was hard to get a beer. Took probably over 10 minutes from the bar. My husband and I snagged a spot around the standing area. I tried the Casey jones beer and it was pretty good. The vanilla stout my husband had wasn't the greatest. The prices are a little higher with two beers being over $15. We were walk ins on a Saturday night and we grabbed a sampler of 4 beers and 1 regular beer to start. We decided to try the small plates for dinner and they happened to have one reservation open at 5pm. BOARDS: Firefly Farms' Bella Vita which is Pasteurized Goat's Milk, Nutty, Sharp, Slightly Sweet, Low Moisture and is accompanied by Truffle Spiked Honey, Pickled Mustard Seeds and Spent Grain Crackers. Really loved the truffled honey, really added a complexity and depth to every bite. Also big fan of the spent grain crackers which were crispy, grainy and had a little bit of sea salt. For $5 it was a great value. Pennsylvania Duck Liver Pate Pickled Shallots, Hobo Stout Candied Bacon Jam, Spent Grain Crackers The duck liver was so smooth, velvety and delicious. The candied bacon jam added perfect sweet and salty balance. And the jar of pate was pretty large, even with two people we only finished about half. No complaints here for $6! I really wanted to take it home it was that good. SMALL PLATES: Carolina Rock Shrimp And Grits Really small plate at first but you definitely get filled up on the grits. Shrimp had great flavor and the spicy chorizo was great heat for the dish. The tomatoes were a little on the squishy side and I could've done without the sourdough crumble on top. Chicken So this dish was a tad bit misleading because it definitely did not mention that it was fried. It was accompanied by arugula, tomatoes and parmesan. It reminded me of a Chicken Milanese. It was a good dish but would have preferred it be grilled instead of fried. SERVICE: Service was consistent and he was passionate about the restaurant, it came through when he talked about the menu. BEER: We left with a growler which saves you $2 if you dine in which is an amazing value at $16 since the average pint is $6-$7. Where do I start? I guess chronologically. It began fine. The place was very quite with just a handful of customers. The problem (at least for me) started with the scanning of the QR code and seeing that there was a 15% employee equity charge. I was a bit confused. I've seen this before but never as high as 15%. Since it was 15% I was uncertain whether this was a mandatory tip but I'll get back to that later. Second, they need better online instructions or provide an overview as to how to use the online app to both order and charge to your account using the phone. There is an option to consolidate your bill with all the parties present or to pay individually. You can also pay as you go or order everything and the pay your bill. I do like technology but this process is a bit obtuse at least the first time you encounter it. I ordered coffee right away and while the app menu had milk and cream as options, it did not have sweetener options so I asked for Splenda which they did not have (only Sweet and Low). BTW I do not use cream in my coffee; only sweetener). I added sugar and tasted. It was terrible. Very very acidic. I love and know coffee and I realize people have different tastes so I politely told them I did not like it and asked for something else. I told the waitress I like dark roast. She said "great, I'll make you a dark roast pour over". When I got that coffee I tasted it and it was better but I still wasn't my style. I said nothing and drank about half a cup. Oh and they said they "comped" my coffee. I ordered two eggs over easy, grits and an English muffin. They were delivered on two small separates plates (muffin, eggs) and small bowl (grits). This makes it very difficult to eat together. Again not a big deal but it is not the way I would serve eggs and grits. The eggs were fine but small. The English muffin arrived. I asked if they had any jelly (I saw that you can buy a bit of "fig jam" for the muffin at a charge of $2, the same price as the English muffin! When she said, "No" I said something that indicated my surprise so they "comped" me the fig jam. Also the muffin was served with butter with no charge! but it was ice cold and not spreadable at all. The grits were very strange. I love grits. I even purchase special grits for home use that come from South Carolina. These grits were tangy with a pebbly texture. I hate it when restaurants try to get too "sophisticated" and serve some artisanal version where the original is already great. And if they are going to go "Artisanal" it better be good, these were not! Oh also...no salt and pepper on the table; I had to ask. There was a knife and fork in the napkin but no spoon and no spoon was brought with my coffee. Instead of asking I used the end of my knife to stir sugar into my coffee. Remember earlier when I wrote that they "comped" my coffee. Well when I went to pay the bill on the iPhone app, the first coffee I ordered was credited back to me ($2) but there was a charge for $4 for the pour over coffee! Also when I paid the bill there were options to "tip" 5%, 10% %15 percent with the 10% as the default choice. Who usually tips only 10%? Obviously this is related to 15% equity charge at the outset but never the less this is a very confusing way to handle "equity" charges. Oh and my bill for a cup of coffee, two small eggs, English muffin, and grits....$22. The irony here is that I have been to this restaurant for dinner (pre-covid) and really enjoyed their inventive menu. There was a sign (or was it a chalk board?) that indicate that breakfast service is new....let's hope they take reviews like this as they are intended and make needed improvements or could it be I am just an old man that loves to yell things like "Get off my lawn!" 4.5 stars - loving Caboose so far! I'd been following them on Facebook ever since I'd heard about their opening, and after months of delays, I was so excited to visit during their opening week. They've been open barely a week, and I've already been twice. The first night was the second night they were officially open and didn't have the kitchen going yet. I understand that things happen, and really appreciated that they were totally ok with patrons bringing in their own food that night (we didn't). We grabbed a table - the place had a decent crowd but a few tables were open and ordered a sampler of the Hefeweizen, Saison, Stout, and the Wheat. We also asked for 'samples' (little tastes which are free, awesome) of the Brown Ale and the IPA. Our favorites were the Hefeweizen and the Saison, and we took a growler home of the Hefeweizen home that evening to pair with a little Plaka Grill takeout. We decided to return two nights later when their kitchen was open, and I think the word is out - the place was JAMMED. I stalked two people who were actually getting up from the bar and snagged seats for my husband and I. I got a pint of the Saison and he got a pint of the Hefeweizen and then one Stout. He also ordered a brat, which came accompanied by horseradish mustard. I didn't try any but he said he liked it. Yes...prices are a tad high. But it's Vienna - everything is expensive here. I have no problem paying good money for good beer and good food, and I thought everything we tried was fresh and delicious. I even didn't *hate* the IPA (I don't like IPAs) which is really saying something. Why not 5 stars? Parking is going to get ugly quickly if it continues to be popular and thus, packed. There's a tiny lot that Caboose shares with other businesses. Not as much of a problem at night during the week, but I suspect parking on the weekends will turn ugly fast. read more

Man, what a hidden gem! I didn't even realize this place was back here. We had a farewell for a coworker here, and I felt like I was driving into some sort of industrial area, not where I would expect to find such a nice brewery with great food. The beer is excellent and a good variety of styles. I hate going to some other breweries where all they have is IPA this and IPA that and IPA, IPA, IPA. Blech! Here at Caboose they have a variety of Vienna Lager, Brown Ale, Saison, and an IPA. I was very excited they had a Scotch ale on the menu (my personal favorite), but they were all out. Food menu looks delicious. My coworkers were raving that the burger was one of the best they'd ever had. I had some fries (very good) and an appetizer of cheese and meats, and it was very good stuff. I was intrigued to see they have brunch here on Saturday and Sunday. I'm going to try and talk my family into driving out here for brunch. My only minor complaint was the server didn't seem happy to be there / seemed annoyed to be serving us, but he might have just been having a bad day. Came on a Sunday afternoon. We made a reservation which probably wasn't necessary, but always makes things easier. We had a flight of beers that included their current (as of this writing) lager, saison, brown ale, and hobo imperial stout. All four were fabulous. The food was as good, if not better. My family was really looking forward to this brewery especially since it stated kid friendly as we were out with the kids. Highly disappointing. Parking is awful. There are only a handful of spaces available and everything else is reserved. It would be a good idea to put parking options on the website vs above the urinal in the men's room. Kid friendly.... Not really. The outdoor area shows evidence of kids chalk drawings, but other than that the inside isn't kid friendly. We had to carry our stroller up a flight of stairs and if we wanted to go up another it was a larger flight of stairs. I didn't see any games or kid friendly drinks other than water. Service at the bar. This was our first time here so I come up to the bar and I get, "what can I get you?". Not a hello, not, hey here is what we have on tap or even asking me what I like to drink. 4.5 rounded up. Most of the beers are hop forward. The stand outs are the following: 1. Casey Jones Rye Pale Ale 5.9% ABV-this one is very balanced with a pale ale malty background paired with strong hops. The malt has extra power from the rye 2. Citra Session IPA 5.1% ABV-has a serious grapefruit taste to me. Great summer beer 3. Vanilla Bean Hobo Imperial Stout 8% ABV-Imperial Stout, Roasted Coffee And Molasses Notes, Vanilla Bean Infused. This was a just an amazing beer. 4. Vienna Lager-Medium malty beer with a bit of a caramel/butterscotch smell. The only beer we didn't like was the The "Zoo" Berliner Weiße 3.4% ABV. This one was sort of like sour lemon/lime soda. Just not our thing. Food wise we went for brunch. Beet salad with candied Walnut Streusel, Apple Tree Farm's Goat Chevre, Horseradish Vinaigrette balanced sweet and savory for an overall great dish. Buttermilk Biscuit, Lancaster County Pork Sausage, Country Style Sausage Gravy. Gravy was perfect with the sausage. This dish was presented in a mini iron skillet. I would put in on a plate instead and cut the biscuit in half so the gravy can get better access. That would take this A dish to A+ territory. Virginia Applewood Smoked Bacon-if you love bacon, you will love this dish. Enough said. Oven Baked Macaroni and Cheese-the sauce was perfect with Asiago, Pecorino Romano, Parmesan Regiano, and so was the Sourdough Crumble on top. The mac itself was a little over cooked, so this gets an A- grade overall. Carolina Rock Shrimp And Grits with Blistered Hummingbird Farms Heirloom Tomatoes, Spicy Chorizo, Sourdough Crumble, Anson Mills White Antebellum Grits. This dish was near perfect. Liked the tomatoes, but there were too many of them and when they popped open they watered down the flavors from the rest of the ingredients. Service was perfect. Liked the atmosphere and we got our weekly shopping done at the Whole Foods nearby afterwards. Can't wait to return and check out dinner and the Brown Ale was not on tap while we were there. The inside was very unique and I did enjoy the atmosphere. Dog friendly and alongside what seemed to be a bike trail and the weather was nice. The path way to the door on the patio is a little narrow so if people are out in the middle than you have to squeeze around them or go off the concrete pad and walk on the grass to get to the door. We arrived and was shortly seated afterwards. We spent a few mins sitting there and we didn't really know what was going on at first or what we should do. Until we asked what was the process. The waiter did say we can order online or thru him. But it just seemed the service was rather meh, not as personable. Does not mean that they were not nice about it. They were. On to the food.... I had the chicken sandwich and sweet potato fries.....You can not go wrong with the SP fries. It was excellent. Nice crunch and still hot and fresh. The chicken sandwich was not bad, I did like it but do not agree that it was worth the price. I've had better chicken sandwiches for less. So as far as getting your moneys worth not so much but it was not bad. We also had the caboose hash and the OG Mac and Cheese. I am not over the moon for the Mac and Cheese. Myself and my wife both felt it was missing something. It was really just really bland. She is a spice person so she bumped it up with some buffalo sauce. The hash was good though. The bourbon French toast was my overall favorite. We saved that for last. That was in my opinion the better of them all although I felt that the mascarpone didn't do much.....it was still a good mix though. Very fluffy and had a nice crunch on the ends. The oatmeal latte was absolutely fantastic, my only thing would be for it to come out more hot next time. But it was not as hot as I would like it to be but the taste was great and my wife loved it. Overall the food was good/satisfactory. I don't like the portion sizes go hand in hand with the prices and the Service could improve but you know I would come back and I would recommend to others. Felt really bad rating this place a 3 out of 5 because i love Caboose Commons in Fairfax, but they have completely different menus/food. Only 3/5 because at this location because: 1) the food was pretty bad. Wife and I both ordered different entrees and an appetizer along with drinks and the burger and appetizer were overcooked and fries greasy but unsalted (weird combo) 2) Prices are really high for the quality of food and cheap atmosphere 3) Menu selection was slimmer and didn't really stand out (sad to see there weren't rice bowls, fried pickles, and chai lattes like the other location) read more

The ones in Fairfax just don't have the facilities (views, games, patios, love music, etc) to match those in Loudoun County. And this one fits in that same category. First the good: Comfortable atmosphere, beer choices were amazing and the beers we chose were delicious! ( Bourbon Hobo Porter and the Oktoberfest). We had the tavern burgers which were also very tasty. The servers were kind, efficient and very friendly! The not-so-good: The "fair wage fee" of 15% added on to our check! Apparently it was written somewhere on the menu and the door but we didn't notice it. We asked our server about it and she explained that the money goes to the brewers and chefs to help them earn an equitable wage. We weren't sure if this was a tip added on or not. The server seemed embarrassed by this situation but did explain it to us. She told us that it is NOT a Virginia "thing"but really a Caboose Brewery "thing". ( We are from NY) As a former waitress I think this is terrible!! Just raise the prices instead or simply PAY A FAIR WAGE!! Don't put your staff in an awkward position. Also I'm sure many people do not leave a tip on top of the 15% and then the servers get NOTHING!! Change your practice or at least put a sign in big letters on each table making customers aware of what you do. We will no longer patronize your restaurants because of the poor way you treat your staff. Pay them properly - raise your prices if you have to. STOP THE FAIR WAGE FEE! Do better! You have a great product but very poor management. We were told the owner is from Europe where tips are not common. Well your restaurant is in US where tips are the norm. Hip brewery close to Tyson's and downtown Vienna. Tucked away in a warehouse you might not realize you have arrived. Came here to try out a new spot. I tried the beet salad with goat cheese cream. The salad was refreshing but I didn't love the cream it was lacking normal goat cheese flavor. The blonde beer I tried the half whit was really tasty. I also tried their homemade ginger beer and it was amazing and super tangy. I love the art all over the place even the bathroom. read more

Have lived in Vienna for 16 years and how have we never been to Caboose?! It's so unassuming from the outside but inside is super inviting with a fun, playful vibe. There's isn't one homogeneous clientele; we saw families with young kids, groups of adults laughing over beers, an older couple...everyone looked happy and enjoying themselves. In a sleepy town like Vienna where most restaurants close before 10PM, Caboose Tavern is a welcome addition to the non-existent drink scene that balances the neighborhood pub vibes with "artisanal" food and drink. Parking might be a hassle during peak hours. But if you're a walker / biker, Caboose is literally off the beaten path (on the W&OD trail). Beer is literally brewed in the back so you'll only have great experiences (ask a waiter if you have questions, they're great!). Upstairs is a great place to finish up a few emails over a beer if you're early. Cocktail options are solid too-- just don't come in expecting them to be the type to salt the rim of your marg. My one qualm is with the food. I know they had a dope chef come in to design the menu. But, nearly every experience has been just a bit too hit or miss. Challah french toast during brunch was a show stopper, but the Scallops and Pork Belly were big misses for me (not too flavorful; tough on the jaw). Nevertheless, I will continue to support them, order food, and, of course, consume their fantastic beer. You guys rock! read more

Our server was very patient with us when sampling different beers and we even got a little tour of the brewery from the manager, Bob!!
