We came here for lunch as soon as they opened. We kind of seated ourselves since no one was at the dining area. Our server came to greet us not shortly after tho. We got our drink orders in- My friend orderes a mixed drink and I had a strwberry lemonade and another friend ordered peach tea. The server gave us both peach tea and realized his mistake as soon as looked at him. It wasn't a big deal. He brought me a strawberry drink later on. Gunny because I actually preferred the peach over the strawberry drink. We all put our orders in but he had to check with the kitchen if they had the shrimp and grits because it wasn't available on his pad. He returned later and told us we can have them. Four of us ordered the shrimp and grits and one had the fried okra salad and fried chicken. We also shared an order of fries and pretzel. The orders came in pretty late- took them at least 30 mins. All our food came in altogether tho. The shrimp and grits were a little weird to some because the shrimp had heads although the skin was peeled. I didn't mind it tho- I just took them out. The serving was a little small for the price and the grits needed to be cooked longer for my taste but it was def flavorful. The garlic fries were good but again -small serving even if you get it as an individual order. My friend didn't like the okra salad and fried chicken. The pretzel was probably the majority's fave. Not bad for lunch fare and right next to the trail so it's not bad for a small snack/light fare. read more

This great brewery is a favorite of mine and my friends!! Caboose tavern and Commons are so fun and super social distancing right now with their ordering via QR system. When I went to Tavern recently we accidentally came on the wrong day and the staff was still so accommodating. I stopped by for a drink after being on the trail. There were quite a few people, but everyone was practicing social distancing. People had masks on. All staff was wearing masks and gloves. To order, you visited the website and ordered and staff brought out the order. There was not much interaction with the staff. My only issue with this place is parking sucks. When I heard this place is in Vienna, I had no idea exactly where in Vienna it was located. Special thanks to the handy GPS, it took us driving pass warehouses to get to Caboose Brewing Company. I was also surprised this place is located right outside of the W&OD Trail. How convenient for bikers, walkers, runners, and skaters. Walking into this place had me in awe with the artwork that were hung on the walls. I have also noticed there were a lot of sunlight in this room, since half of the place had windows. There are 2 floors. The top floor I was not too sure of, but I have seen some people on their laptops doing work up there. I'm not sure if customers can bring their own laptop, but it could be the employees work here too. This looks like a very nice place to get a beer. Finding a seat was tough, since it was mainly 'help yourself for a seat'. We came in the afternoon, so all tables were taken except a commuter table. Sure, why not, a commuter table sounds good. My boyfriend and I sat across with a family that were just ordering food. Caboose Brewing Company is the first brewery I've seen selling tapas. I have never had tapas before in any place, so I wouldn't mind giving this a try. First off, we ordered beers. I ordered And So It Gose... (Quarter Pint, 4.8%, $3) and my boyfriend ordered the Wolf Trap Summer Ale (Pint, 4.8%, $6). As for tapas: Steak Tartare ($8), Newsom's Ham ($7), Frites ($6), and Tacos (Pork Belly) ($12). We were told by our server that we had had to order our own tapas one at a time. The Tacos were tasty and the Newsom's Ham was interesting. I knew the meat was salty, but for the crisps, I had trouble eating them. The crisps were crunchy, but tasted very stale. I was hoping I had much of a bigger meal than tapas. Cool brewery located at the end of a long warehouse style building in an industrial part of town. The decor is rustic with a lot of reclaimed material, such wood pallets, that make for excellent chandeliers. The main bar is spacious with enough seating for plenty as well as sidebars and stools. The dining area is also spacious, and there's an upstairs area for overflow. The patio has lots of seating, great backyard bbq lighting, and heaters. The beer selection is great with about 12 beers from them and one guest draft, and they have a menu of tasty bites made from a lot of local food providers. Lastly, they're right next to a very popular walking/biking paved path that attracts many folks on theirs daily exercise regimen. I like this place but it is sort of hit or miss with the waitstaff. Last time we went they seem to avoid us because I guess they could get bigger tips elsewhere. We asked for separate checks and they muffed that up, and there was an added waitstaff fee, which I didn't notice and wasn't warned of. So, now I won't go since lord knows what other surprise fees would be added. And, btw, I always tip more than 20% so, since there was only two of us, I can't imagine what possess them to lose customers by being penny wise. read more

Didn't end up eating here. Service was rude when we walked in, and after seating us it took 15 minutes for someone to pour water with a promise to "come back soon" - not seen again. There's a QR code on the table, but poor service/wifi and we were the only table in the restaurant receiving 0 service. There were 5 tables at the time, and 5 people working, yet no one came to take even a drink order while all the other tables around us were being served. A table that came in after us had both food and drinks before anyone took our drink order. Someone finally did ask us what we wanted to drink after about 25-30 minutes of sitting there. We ended up ordering small beers and then leaving to eat lunch elsewhere. Disappointing, because the beers we tried were pretty good but the service was so poor we won't be back. read more

Stopped by on a Saturday to try something new. Upon arrival it looked like a sketchy warehouse, but around the corner was a super inviting brewery! Staff was all informative, quick to answer any questions, and extremely kind. The place has outdoor only seating currently due to COVID restrictions. Put our name on the list and we're informed that we were able to order beer and they would bring it to the standing area while we were waiting. Maybe 25 people in the outdoor standing area, socially distanced of course, and maybe 10 or so tables on the patio. Did not wait to be seated due to longer than expected wait but the beer was very good and came out extremely quickly. There are a lot of beer options, and some food options. Did not see many people eating but everyone enjoyed the drinks. Right by the trail so a lot of bikers and area for bike parking. read more

Let me start by saying that I have been to the Caboose Brewery many times since it opened. I had not been back since before COVID. We stopped coming because, after struggling to find something on the menu, I chose the fried chicken sandwich. The restaurant interior is dark and industrial and halfway through my sandwich, I realized that the chicken was RAW. We decided to give it another shot last night. Things started out very badly. My husband made a reservation and we were seated immediately. We settled in, were offered water and were choosing our beer from the chalkboard menu. The hostess came back and asked us to prove that we had a reservation. Apparently, another family came in with the same name. My husband was having problems with his phone and we were trying to pull up the email on my daughter's phone. This has never happened to me before and it was embarrassing. Then we sat forever waiting for someone to take our order. Finally, I realized that I had to place the order myself on my phone. It would be helpful if we had been told this when we sat down. The menu is not user friendly. I wanted to order drinks first and chose to open a tab. That was pointless because it seemed like you had to pay to actually get the drinks brought to your table. I had to go back and place another order for our food. It wasn't until I was reviewing the order when I realized that there was a "fair wage fee" added to the bill. There are prominent choices below to add a tip. Basically, they want to say that they pay their workers a "fair wage" but they want YOU to pay for it. Let's face it, NO ONE is working in Vienna for the $2/hr that is implied. I was not about to add a tip but it made me feel uncomfortable because you pay in advance. I can also see where many would not notice this extra fee. We would have left but it was too late to go somewhere else at that point. Lastly, the food is brought out and placed on your table like Noodles and Company and there was no other interaction with employees. No "How is everything?", no more water, no more water, NOTHING. The food was very good but there are lots of good restaurants in the area. I will spend my money elsewhere and leave it up to the businesses to pay their employees. read more

It wasn't bad by any means, just lacked flavor. Starters were pork belly and pickled vegetables. We had fish, chicken sandwich, steak frites, and a noodle bowl for dinners. We had a wide range of menu items. All were basically bland. Cooked nicely, all meats were moist. The sides were fresh. Just like I mentioned, lacked flavor that could elevate this to a great meal. Fantastic location and nice set up and they have finally resumed waiting on tables outside post Covid, which makes the prices more reasonable and ordering and paying more efficient for the customer. We ordered 2 burgers. The burgers are said to be 1/2 lb. While they were large, that 1/2 pound must've cooked away quite a bit. Something on the burgers was spicy, like horseradish. Waaaay too much. I scraped it off. The ketchup was spicy too. Looking at the menu, it's apparent the chef likes spice. But, it's too strong, and I'm a spice person! I ordered a med rare burger. It was cooked fine. My partner ordered a medium and it was rare. The server asked what we wanted for a side " French fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Side Salad?" We chose sweet potato fries which were very good. They were also an up charge which the server failed to mention. There is a fair wage fee of 15%. Fine. But, then there is still a spot on the bill for "tip." So, you either tip as usual because you don't understand the surcharge which means you overpay, you leave a small tip to increase the surcharge to, say, 20% which makes you look cheap, or you add nothing and feel like a heal because it looks like you left no tip. On the plus side, the server was friendly and it was interesting watching a batch being made through the window. But, given the spice amount and the deceptive charges, we won't return and I can't recommend it. Wish I could. It has potential. read more

Stay away from the burgers and fries!! It was our first time at this place and it was very disappointing. Parking is awful, beer is ok and food is over priced and not good. My brother and I ordered the Cowboy burger with fries. The burgers were average, nothing special for a $17 burger. The fries were the worse I've seen and tasted so far. They were completely dry and over cooked as if they were dipped into the fryer 2 or 3 times. I complained about the fries and the waitress kindly asked for a new order of fries. The new fries came exactly as the previous ones so finally the waitress offered to change them for a salad. We asked the waitress why the fries were that way and she told us that they were always like that. Unbelievable! How hard is it to cook some fries? I came here on a rainy Saturday and it was bumpin. They have a dining area which was full. We sat at th full service bar and ordered a flight, two beers, and the Mac and cheese (which was actually a huge motivation for coming). I liked the vibe here. It was very laid back, but with excellent service! My favorite beer was the fog IPA, but that's because I'm an IPA gal... they have a few lighter and a few darker to suit other beer desires. My husband and I came here for breakfast last Saturday and enjoyed it all. It's a hidden neighborhood gem that offers breakfast each day at 8AM. Highly recommending the buttermilk short stack with a side of berries, the Caboose hash with an egg on top (sunny side up), their chocolate croissant, and all of their coffee/espresso drinks. We were surprised that a brewery would have such divine coffee! As a plus-- this location is right off of the W&OD trail. We'll be back! read more

There are now seats at the bar, and there is a person behind the bar. This person is not your bartender. They will barely acknowledge your presence. There is a QR code for your menu and ordering pleasure. If you have an android, it may not work. People will ask if you are able to order, but there is no paper menu to look at, so best download another app to read the menu. You order your food and drink on the app, but before your order is placed, you must pay the tab plus the auto-grat, plus the suggested additional tip. Note: you have yet to receive any service. You get the drinks, you get the food. You have to ask for silverware. You have to find someone to get mustard. You don't seem to have a server at all. No one ever checks in to see how everything is tasting. There are 4-5 "servers" standing in the server station. Why so many, when the customer does all of the service? You are leaving and as you leave, the host says, "have a good day". It was a waste of time and travel for mediocre beer and abysmal customer service. I've been a professional server/bartender for 19 years and this was one of the worst examples of "service" I have ever experienced. read more

This place is super cute and unassuming, (considering it's location in a back parking lot looking area). Walking in, I was delighted by the cute interior. It was a cold night, but walking into Caboose made us feel warmed right up. I just want to shoutout to the bartenders for being attentive and on point. It was my sister's birthday and we had never been to Caboose, and they were more than happy to give us samples of a lot of different beers on tap because we are indecisive. The food is a bit on the expensive side as people say, but I appreciate that they use local ingredients from the vegetables to the beef. We tried the pork belly dish that they all raved about on Yelp, however, I was a bit disappointed because I expected more flavor other than overwhelming barbecue sauce. Otherwise, the dish was executed well and cooked well. The fries with the IPA dipping sauce was interesting too, and a cool snack to enjoy with our cold beers. Overall, Caboose is one of the nicer breweries I've been to in northern VA, and I would be interested in coming back to try their other items! read more

Go for the beer... stay for the beer. You need a certain amount of intestinal fortitude if you want to go to this place. It has nothing to do with the food, just the process of getting to it. As you start driving down Mill street, a street that is not at all well lit, the world around you starts to get... industrial... and then rustic. There's the sound of banjo/guitar duets wafting through the air. Eventually, you reach a sign that says "Only official vehicles past this point" and the only thing around you are more industrial-looking buildings. However, if you look at the warehouse on your left carefully, you'll see the work "Caboose" faintly painted on the side. That's the place. Park your car, gird your loins, and walk around to the side. That turns out the be the front of the restaurant and from here on your survival is pretty much assured. On the plus side was the wide variety of complex beers. If you don't know what you want, and you probably don't because you're reading reviews about the place, order a "flight" of samples. You still wind up with a pint of brew, but it is presented in four four-ounce glasses with everything clearly labeled. The impressiveness of the beer was balanced by the unimpressiveness of the food. Don't get me wrong; everything was well prepared. However, the portions were small (they say up front that they serve "small plates") and if anything underflavored. I prefer more robust tastes to go with beer and reserve the milder things to go with wine. Then again, I never said I was very sophisticated. Anyway... A good bet is the sampler appetizer. You get some meats, cheeses, some pate, and delicious flatbread. That plus a couple of beer flights are easily enough for two and would make an excellent introduction to the Caboose should you ever want to return. , read more

I came here with a group after an afternoon at Great Falls--we were hungry after time outside and looking for good eats and beer. The beer offerings are pretty solid, and I love that they offer each one in 4oz to let you build your own flight. We shared the blackberry gose, tangerine dream, peach basil cider, and one of the stouts. The tangerine one, which they described as a mimosa-inspired beer, is one to stay away from. It did taste a lot like a mimosa, if it was made with beer instead of champagne or Prosecco. Not a favorite. But we liked the others, especially the cider. For food, we split a burger, mac and cheese, crab hushpuppies, and charcuterie. Given the portion size, the food is a little pricey--would've expected larger servings for what we paid. But the mac was excellent and the crab hushpuppies were unique. The charcuterie wasn't anything special, but I liked how you could choose which cheeses and meats you wanted. My friends described the burger as "pretty standard," and the fries were okay. The drinks definitely topped the meal, and I would come back to try their other beers. read more

Located in a warehouse district and all the surrounding businesses have signs marked for their patrons only. It seems like they cater mostly to the bicyclists who ride through while on the W&OD trail. There were 2 or 3 people working behind the bar and no one made eye contact, greeted or even smiled at us. We had to ask for menus and drinks. Once our chicken sandwiches were ready, a really friendly girl brought them to us. They were good, but nothing special. And they make their own ketchup... which while I appreciate the attempt, it looked and tasted just like canned tomato paste . Been a few times over the past year. Mostly for coffee and breakfast, but a couple times in the late afternoon. Located in the very back of an industrial complex...it can be a little challenging to find on the first visit. Parking in the front is pretty limited. There's parking around back near the bike trail, but that can be a little challenging to find the first time as well. The staff has been friendly during every visit, though not always quite as attentive as I'd prefer. The place hasn't been very busy in the morning, but definitely filled up at the end of the day. Solid beer selection, though leaning pretty hard toward IPAs. For those looking for something other than IPA, there are options, but not always that many. The food selection is better than average for a brewery. Unfortunately, some of their food prices seem a bit off. Still, good quality bites to go with the drinks. I don't love that they include a non-negotiable 'living wage' charge in every bill. I'm definitely in favor of employees getting a living wage, and I'm willing to pay more as a customer to make that happen. But, tacking it onto the bill at the end as a surcharge that only the customer feels seems like a bit of a bait and switch by the ownership. Employee wages are the employer's responsibility, including the payroll taxes associated. Customers pay for product and service. If the business needs help offsetting the cost of paying living wages, increase the prices of products. That tangent aside, this is certainly a solid place, worth a visit. read more

I've only come here for the beer, but both times I've stopped by I enjoyed my experience. Great service, beer & vibes. It's a casual place right off the trail and in an industrial area of downtown Vienna, giving it a bit of the "hipster" vibe. They have happy hour specials as you'd expect for a tavern, and lots of events for locals (running club, yoga, etc.). Definitely worth checking out! read more

The ambience is super casual and I learned that bike-riders go there on Sundays because it is right next to the trail. The service is also casual but I was not expecting a Michelin rated brewery. Came here with a friend over the past week. This review is for a combination of beer and food. Please see separately. Ambiance: rustic, hipster, definitely a great space. The awesome thing is this place holds events throughout the week. When we came, there was a running event. So we met a lot of runners and bikers as well. It's got really chill vibes and everyone is friendly Service: We sat at the bar...our original bartender was sort of awkward and did not really assist us initially. Sort of hovered around but rarely made eye contact with us. There was another bartender there that was knowledgeable and assisted us in making our beer and food selection. Beer: hands down 5 star. There's so much on tap, so much to offer! You have everything from lager to ipas to even saison. You will definitely find something that you like. You can also do a flight of four for 12 (i think...or 10) bucks. You can create your own or choose a premade one for the day. Food: Yikes. This was the one that really missed the mark. We ordered the shrimp and grits as well as the mushroom burger. When they meant small, they mean small. For the price the shrimp and grits was not worth it. I think they tried to put a twist on it but completely missed it. It was not at all....like it's supposed to be. A completely poor representation and a "trying to hard to be different" item. Please...don't. It really did a disservice. The burger was plentiful, and came with fries. But wow....they did not mix the patty well AT. ALL. I got hits of SALT here and there. I understand it's awesome to have food and beverage but please don't have a menu if it's beyond subpar...it was so disappointing. I think it's unfair to compare the Vienna location with Caboose Commons. They're different! **NOTE: scanning over some recent reviews on this location, I'm surprised to see so many review are for Caboose COMMONS in the Mosaic area, and not this one, in Vienna, so just a FYI** Caboose Brewing Company is a nice, small, intimate space for bicyclists, trail-walkers, and locals to enjoy a glass (or more!) of good beer, particularly out on the small patio area. This place also features some super delicious food choices, not far from some more upper-scale small plates dining places. The pork belly and burgers are to die for. (This all makes sense, given that this is Caboose's original location, where it started out, so obviously it's not going to be huge) Not sure about Commons, but this location apparently has cocktails now! Haven't had the chance to try just yet, since I chose to get some beer instead... Commons, on the other hand, is much larger - both the outside patio area and the indoor seating space. (Are dogs allowed inside?? I've seen some indoors, but haven't brought mine in) I won't go into detail here - will save that for my Commons review - but both are great places. If you want a fine/finer-dining experience, or perhaps a more personal experience, Vienna is the place to go! (but parking in both areas are limited) also, edited to add: this isn't to say the Vienna location isn't good for groups. It is. It's right off the trail, and there's a decently-sized patch of grass that I've seen children play in. There are bike racks, water for dogs, and there is a smaller second level inside. The only thing is that the patio area isn't covered by a hard structural roof (sheets of fabric, i think it is), so if you want to take the dogs somewhere on a rainy day, it won't be to Caboose :( read more

A brewery and restaurant in one is what you'll find at Caboose Brewing. The space is open and airy with very limited number of dining tables on the main floor and upstairs. I made reservations for weekend dining as the website states that it's "highly recommended" to do so for dining. We were seated upstairs which gave us the opportunity to take in the space from an aerial view and it was nice to be away from the noise and bustling chatter from the crowd mingling near the bar area. Call me old but whatever. Beer choices are a plenty and our server asked us what types of beers we drank. After giving him descriptions to our likings of brews, he gave us a couple of recommendations. Since we were told the dishes were small yet shareable portions, we ordered 4 dishes between two people which was the perfect amount. In hindsight, I wish we had only ordered 3 so we could save room for dessert. Pork belly--three thick slabs of pork belly which reminded me basically of eating a thicker version of breakfast bacon. I'm not used to eating pork belly prepared this way as restaurants I've frequented apply a more tender cooking technique to it so it's melt in your mouth delicious. Not one to say no to pork belly, I could eat only finish one slab. Would not order this again. Crispy brussel sprouts--enjoyed this dish and ate the bowl clean. The raisins gave it a nice sweet balance to offset the bitterness that usually comes with brussel sprouts. The sprouts weren't very crispy as the name describes but overall, a great dish. Potato gnocchi with roasted chicken--my favorite dish of the night. It's hard to find good gnocchi and Caboose delivered as it was pillowy and soft. Added to this dish (along with roasted chicken) were shavings of pecornio cheese which made it for a hearty and comforting order. Roasted rainbow trout--least favorite of the evening. Though the trout was cooked well, I didn't like the sweet sunchoke puree it was on a bed of. The apply slaw didn't help with adding more sweetness to the dish. Eating fish with something that sweet wasn't what I expected and just fell short for me, flavor profile wise. The dinner menu is a bit curbed so I would be interested in returning to try their brunch menu next. Reservations are easy to make via yelp although I can't say the same thing for the parking situation. Very limited space. read more
