Cactus & Concrete is a beautiful gem run by beautiful gems. I have been a client for so long possibly a decade of Rudy. He has transitioned me from Brunette to stunning blonde as I gray over time. It just keeps getting better and better..I love his staff? Truly trust his assistant whom he has trained meticulously. Serena is a natural in her own right and has absorbed his expertise added to her beautiful bright intellect and intuition. THe space itself is easy going, luxurious chic atmosphere of greenery in an old industrial space from the old cannery days of San Jose that Rudy hss transformed into something unique and ultimately kind. I love them, simply love them. My appointments are the higlight no pun intended of my month. The amazing thing is this by going blonde one would yhink having long tresses would be iimpossible with the processing and I gotta tell you my hair is not crispy or friend and nearly dowm to my waist with beautiful shaping and subtle layering. I had a really disappointing experience at Tangerine Salon. About an hour before my appointment, I was informed that my stylist wouldn't be able to do my hair because she wasn't feeling well,and they passed me along to another stylist I'd never had--I was assured she was equally skilled, but that unfortunately turned out to be untrue. I had specifically mentioned when booking that I wanted a toner service along with my usual haircut and double-checked that the products were ammonia-free. I was told they were. When I arrived, I saw my original stylist actually working on another client--which was confusing and honestly frustrating after being told she was unavailable. I should've left right then. The replacement stylist immediately started pushing me to do a root touch-up, even though I hadn't planned to. She mixed a color formula that was noticeably darker than my base and told me she would "just fix the back" where my roots weren't perfect. Instead, she started applying the color all over my scalp. Within minutes, I felt tingling and burning--something I'd never experienced before. When I said something, she told me to wait another ten minutes. When we finally rinsed it out, I was informed by her that the dye did contain ammonia, which was likely what caused the burning. My scalp was irritated and painful, and I later needed medical treatment for it. To make matters worse, she didn't even use scissors to give me a professional haircut -- she used a razor, despite me telling her twice that I don't like razor cuts. The result was uneven and rough, and the whole experience felt rushed and careless. On top of everything, I was overcharged (total $390) for the root touch-up I never asked for which burned my scalp. When I called the owner, Rudy, to explain what happened, he did a lot of back-and-forth saying there wasn't much he could do, and hung up on me. I have been to Tangerine for haircuts a couple of times over the last few years. I have to say the haircuts have been good, no complaints there. This time I went in to get highlights and I was disappointed with many things about the experience. I have never got highlights done before, never been through the process so I was trusting the stylist to respect what I wanted. I specifically asked for subtle, dark brown highlights .. and asked her for a quote. She said she would do partial highlights and that the quote was - 250 (plus more if more color was needed) and 85 for the haircut. At the end, she presented me with a bill of 550. And when I said that wasn't what I expected she said that she had me down for full highlights. No apologies or anything. She did offer me a discount, but it was above what she had quoted. The color also lightens over time, which I was not aware of! My hair now has light highlights NOT dark brown as I had requested. I asked her if I can come back in to get a toner and she said she would get me a quote for it. She didn't. When I called the salon I was told that I could get a toner free of cost within a week of the original appointment. Interesting how that was not communicated to me earlier, seems pretty basic if that is standard policy. I just felt I didn't trust this place enough anymore and had spent enough money here, so I'm not going back in. Oh and when I asked for a straight blow out she said she was going to add curls in for her "photos". Didn't even bother to ask if that was ok by me. I don't care much to kick up a fuss about the small stuff and I didn't at the time, but this whole experience has just left a bad taste. read more

I got a haircut from Marisa late last year and a consultation regarding bleaching for a vivid color. I initially wanted just a trim as I prefer long hair, but after some hair lessons from Marisa, I decided that I needed to do my "big chop" in order to maintain healthy hair. She gave me a layered haircut and I love it!! It made my hair so bouncy and looked healthier even when she hadn't cut off all the damage (which would have been a haircut all the way to my chin. That's too short for me, haha!) The main reason why I wanted to come was to bleach my hair and achieve a muted/ashy purple hair color (as I had gotten it bleached a few months ago and had a "bronde" color that I was not a fan of). Marisa was very honest and told me that my hair was in no condition to lighten that much and not only did she do a test strand, she still gave me options about dyeing the light parts of my hair with a semi-permanent color to cause no further damage. The biggest issue I have with going to professional hair stylist is that I've always felt like I was judged for doing hair no-no's like using black box dye. While Marisa was very honest and straight-forward, I sensed no judgement which definitely helped me enjoy my "hair transformation." Everyone here was so kind and friendly that I would recommend anyone to come here if they want a great haircut/style. Definitely will be coming back again for any other hair transformations I want down the line! I originally wanted highlights but Jessica said it wouldn't work. So I ask just to do my root to cover my grays and a high cut. Well $260 later. Can someone tell $260 for what?!?? If they charge for styling, did a horrible job at styling it. And some of the grays was missed. Oh and I asked to cut about 1.5 inches off but it looked like she chopped off 3 inches off. I booked my appointment via email and had let them know that I'm not in the SJ area, which is why I couldn't come in for a consultation. I can't even provide a review of the stylists because I didn't get in. I had an appointment at 10 AM for a haircut with a stylist that charged $65. The stylist texted me the night before to come in at 11 AM instead. At 10:15 the day of the appointment, she asked me to come in at 12 PM instead. I had lunch plans and was unavailable. They told me that they were booked for the rest of the day, and the only appointment they had was with a stylist that would charge $85. They were unwilling to come down to $65 which was my original appointment. I know the salon gets booked quick which is why I had made an appointment in advance, which they did not honor. I've had a lot of bad experiences with other hair salons where if I say cut one inch they'll cut 5, but with Kat she is always attentive to what my hair goals are. Anytime that I've done a hair style change she's always been really great at helping me decide what would be best and my hair always feels nice and refreshed afterwards. Extremely satisfied with my last visit at Tangerine Hair Studio. They accepted me in the salon same day for a trim/cut and color. I wanted to match my natural hair color and add some sort of dimension. The hairdresser suggested I get face framing with long layers so that is what I went for and was really happy with the cut. For the dye portion she offered a permanent or semi permanent option and emphasized that semi would be better if I would want to change my hair color at any point. I went for the semi dye and she perfectly matched my hair color! I am also excited because this means I can switch up my hair once summer arrives. She finished my style off with a cute blow out that I fell in love with, from my understanding this was complimentary but hair styling can also be an add on or stand alone. This is only reviewing the haircut I received. The customer service was great, making the appointment was great, everything was perfect.. except for the haircut I received. I showed the stylist about 4-5 pictures of what I wanted and specified that I wanted my hair cut to shoulder length. But I ended up with almost like a bowl cut, Korean grandma hairstyle, which was nothing close to what I have asked.
