We tried Cafe Capricho during small business Saturday. We needed a bite while we were out shopping! We got the chorizo burrito and chorizo tortilla. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to your table. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. The food came out hot and fresh, and we had complimentary chips and salsa to snack on while we waited. They have canned and bottled beverages as well as a soda fountain. They serve some beer as well. We enjoyed our meal, and I we would eat here again. The torta was particularly good, but the burrito was tasty, too. read more

Love this tucked in spot. Yummy yummy yummy every thing is yummy. Got a mom and pop feel. You walk in order at the counter and then seat yourself inside or out. Super cute for a first date spot with quality food and located in a great area to walk and window shop in. Not sure if they have a dedicated parking lot but we parked down a residential street and walked the two minutes no problem. Definitely recommend exploring the menu. I had 3 different tacos and all were delightful! I think my top two are the fish and potato and pepper. Can't wait to go back and explore more. read more

I just noticed the current rating of this wonderful little place and I thought I'd offer some positive comments. My wife and I have been enjoying Cafe Capricho's food for many years. In fact, we consider the chicken tacos to be best in town. A couple of those tacos, along with some rice and beans makes the perfect meal. Their homemade salsa, with chips, is really good, too. The staff is always pleasant, the interior dining is always welcoming and clean and the street side patio is inviting and comfortable. Also, the beer selection is solid. Iam a loyal customer, and now changing from 5 star to 3 star. Been eating at Cafe Capricho for around 8- 9 years , unfortunately place has slowly been going down hill. My Wife and I loved there green salsa its not available anymore, they use to give you a choice between 2 different salsas. Now they give you salsa that looks like puke and not so good. What a disappointment. I wasn't sure what type of food they served so I looked up their menu and it appeared to be Mexican food. I did not find any sort of ambiance inside. Kind of cold, cafeteria like, English 80's music. You have to stand in line to order. I ordered a plate meat and it was served in a plastic container. The food was neither authentic nor tasty. Their food is as fresh as fresh gets; their produce selection top-notch. At most Mexican restaurants you feel as if you are carb-loading on a hastily-assembled dish consisting of low quality ingredients. Here, every dish is made with love and a mini-masterpiece, from comfort food favorites like burritos to south-of-the-border specialties like fish tacos to dishes you can't find elsewhere, like their delicious strawberry salad. I previously vented about a slow kitchen and some inconsistent dish delivery, but several more visits have taught me that that just comes with the territory. Good prices, great food, not too fancy. Owner is nice. It is a smaller restaurant and they usually are pretty busy around lunch and not as busy around dinner. This is where we go for the BEST fish tacos in Sacramento! Their Baja Taco and Shrimp Tacos are delicious, fresh, melt-in-your-mouth good! Chips and salsa are amazing. I am so annoyed writing this review. The owners are so inflexible. I asked if I could buy a side of their enchilada sauce. ( I hate their salsa) for my burrito. The nice kid working said he had to ask owner. She came out and said no, we don't sell it. I said I just want a small side for my burrito. She said no. I used to frequent this restaurant a lot when it first opened. They made two fresh salsas that were delicious. I understand that they changed to only one. But, it is neither of the two original. I go there about once a month. When owner is not there I have had no problem getting the small salsa size enchilada sauce. I work in customer service. It's so easy to say yes to small requests. Also, it seems like every time I'm there (once a month) they are training a new person. I suspect it is because the owners are difficult to work for. I wanted sauce with my quesadilla and I didn't realize you have to pay, which I was happy to do, but I didn't have cash and there is a minimum purchase amount on card purchases. Being in customer service my first response would be "let me grab you one this time but know let us know when you order next time" but the guy basically said sorry it's policy. I pretty much only come for lunch, but it's definitely at the top of list. They have the BEST Baja fish tacos I've ever had. Fresh battered fish with white sauce and cabbage on a corn tortilla- I was into Rubios until I tried the fresher version here! They also have great burritos. They use black beans, but they are so good I don't even miss refried. When my coworkers and I feel like splurging, we order the fried plantains- they are sooo good! A very light fry and slightly sweet/tangy sauce. You can pick up free chips and salsa at the counter too. I usually call in my order if I'm in a hurry, but service is pretty good at lunch and it doesn't usually take a long time. read more

I've been a fan of Cafe Capricho since its opening in 2010. This is the kind of cafe most cities lack. A simple, but colorful dining area, that is unpretentious. An American look at Mexican fare that's not caught up in strict Mexican tradition or low quality "fast" food. The choices on their menu are very familiar but distinctive in approach. Two of my absolute favorites are the Baja Torta and the Cheese Burger. The torta is not like others and has a fresh approach with avocado and deep fried fish. The burger is, bar none, the best burger you'll find in Sacramento. Hefty, juicy and not complicated, like so many restaurants push. The same, hard working, cook has been grilling these burgers for a decade, and giving them a smokey flavor you'll not find elsewhere. Capricho used to be our go to spot and a place we'd brag of having the best burgers in town to our friends. Sadly, quality and quantity have been slipping over the past year and a half. Portions have gotten smaller, which in itself might not be that big of deal; I would end up eating too much anyway. However, their burgers (both the Jack and Bleu Cheese) have changed for the worse. Avocados are no longer a standard condiment and change in bun and overall smaller burger has us rethinking if we want to continue coming here. We first started coming here about 8 years ago. Food was mediocre, service went from disappointing to irritating. *Please excuse the length, I have to explain why this was a bad experience.* Expecting an easy outing with options for all; Arrived at 7:50pm with three of my grandparents and my father. Immediately encountered the host/cashier who said "you can sit here" and walked away without another word. Waited minutes before realizing she wasn't coming back, and that we had to order at the counter. My fault for not knowing. "Café", they mean it. Got the same greeting as if we had walked into a Starbucks and sat down. Don't expect a friendly introduction or greeting. Dad and I both had to repeatedly ask the cashier for a bottle opener despite standing there looking at her with unopened bottles on the counter. Lol, awkward. At this point, I was a bit embarrassed for inviting my family here, but after settling our drinks I was overall content--until I ordered my food. Wanted to try their Vegan Combo (1 butternut, poblano, corn taco; 1 potato, spinach, poblano enchilada) and asked for a crunchy/hard taco. Cashier didn't think they could do that, and went back to ask the manager. I assumed it was a price-point issue: why else wouldn't they when they're obviously capable? It's a Latin-American restaurant. Surprisingly, she returned with "yeah he can't make that" and when I pressed for a reason why, she didn't have a response. Just kinda shook her head and rolled her eyes back towards the door she just came from. /Imploring/ her, I asked "Really? You can't make me a crunchy vegan taco? Why?" She replied, "Well, they make them ahead of time in the morning with toothpicks." ??? Compromising, I asked if I could have a potato/poblano taco without cheese. I was amazed to learn that they would not make me one without topping it with cheese. They cannot "veganize" any of their four vegetarian crunchy tacos and cannot explain why. I ordered butternut squash enchiladas and a small salad, rather dejectedly, and sat down. (Btw, citrus dressing was too sweet & enchiladas had insignificant amount of pumpkin seeds.) Waiting for the food, overheard the manager tell another customer something like, "that's the most important thing, making the customer happy." So, I took the opportunity to ask him why he was completely unable to make me any crunchy vegan tacos. His response baffled me. He looked at me blankly, squeezed his eyes shut for like 10 seconds, (as if he were wishing I'd disappear,) & tilted his face back towards the ceiling, before rolling different excuses off the top of his head, verbatim: * "they're pre-made in the morning" * "squash is already cooked so we can't cook it twice in the deep fryer." (BEANS MUST BE PRE-COOKED, TOO, SIR. LOL?) * "we aren't set-up to fry empty shells, we only have a deep fryer" * "we can't fill a fresh shell and fry it for you" I gave up, said "thanks for your explanation although I still don't understand", to which he gave me a stale face.. That's when it went from disappointing to irritating. My dad enjoyed his crunchy bean taco, at least, which seemed to be vegan except the mountain of cold, crumbly queso fresco on top. Huh. :C I'm forgiving--I've worked in food service for years, and, for me, a smile goes a long way--but I walked out of here disappointed and irritated. The manager could not give me a logical explanation for being unable to fulfill what should be an easy request. tl;dr If you want some cafeteria-style food with minimal human-contact, Cafe Capricho is an OK option, unless you're a vegan who dares to order something as bizarre as a hard taco. read more

I stopped by Cafe Capricho one weekday afternoon for lunch because 1) I was craving tacos and 2) I wanted something simple and fresh. I had Cafe Capricho bookmarked because they have tacos AND a ton of Vegetarian options. Sold! Pro Tip: Call in your to go order before you get there. Otherwise it'll be a longish wait. I arrived quickly and was able to find parking down a side street because there's no parking lot. It was a nice afternoon so the patio was filled with customers but there were plenty of tables outside. I lucked out and there was no line when I arrived, but it formed quickly afterwards. I ordered Two Crispy Tacos (One Bean and Cheese and One Potato and Cheese) which also came with complimentary Chips and Salsa. My total was under $6.50 and it was a perfect serving for me for lunch. Yes! After quite a bit of a wait (I'm lucky to have an hour lunch) I was on my way. I got back to the office and discovered that the tacos were SO delicious! Simple with just beans, cheese and lettuce or potatoes, cheese and lettuce but so good and satisfying. I especially liked the perfectly crisp taco shell that didn't get soggy during my 10 minute drive back. The complimentary chips and salsa were great too; the chips were fresh (not out of the bag) and the salsa was flavorful. Win win! I will definitely come back to Cafe Capricho for another healthy lunch on the cheap. When I was there I saw they also have a pretty good happy hour with food specials and plenty of craft beers in their cooler. The stars seemed aligned for a good time to finally try Cafe Capricho: we found close street parking on an otherwise busy Folsom Blvd/33rd Street, we did not get run over trying to cross Folsom Blvd at 33rd Street, we were early for the Yelp event being held directly across the street, my +1 loves Mexican food, we were starving, a 4 Yelp star rating, and I needed a new restaurant to review. Oh yeah! But sadly, the food did not leave a twinkle in my eye. I ordered the pork chile verde plate and a potato taco. My boyfriend got his usual carne asada burrito. We helped ourselves to the free teeny bowls of chips and the fresh homemade salsa, which, by far was the best thing we ate there. Bland bland bland...boring boring boring! When the server brought out the chile verde plate, I just know I had a look on my face, like "what the f***?". A small round white plate with a spoonful of black beans, a spoonful of rice, and a spoonful of the chile verde, that had about 5 small chunks of pork, which were not even tender! Apparently portions and presentation are minimal, along with taste. My rice was cooked all the way but had zero flavor. Same for the beans. No amount of salt or hot sauce could rescue this meal. For $9, I expected much much more. So when the raved about potato taco came, it had a lot of potential. You order at the counter, but are served at your table - so it falls somewhere between a taqueria and a sit-down restaurant. It gets a little crowded at peak hours and can take a couple minutes longer than you'd think. But don't worry, snack on the complementary self-serve chips and red and green salsas while you wait. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, so sit outside if the Sac climate permits! DELICIOUS AND UNIQUE: The dishes I've tried are very flavorful. There's a level of creativity and flair that's a step beyond the usual Mexican staples one might expect at a run-of-the-mill taco shop. I find myself craving their atypical entrees like stuffed poblano peppers (filled with cheese, currants and pine nuts) and black bean, chard, and potato burritos. Their salads are interesting as well, with ingredients like fennel, pear, mango, sunflower seeds, and jicama, topped off with a tasty citrus vinaigrette. Another of those "3.5 star" reviews...I'll admit to being reluctant to giving a small business a rating lower than its current average, as I've had several meals here and my only real gripe is occasionally having to wait a long time for my (delicious) meal. That said, all of the dishes we've tried have been good to excellent. Free chips in tiny little bowls keep me from over-eating, since each return trip to the order counter burns off more calories! I've done the math - if I eat four bowls of chips & salsa I'll actually lose weight during my meal. Not accounting for the cold beers "en botella" or on tap, that is. Summer afternoons are a killer on the south-facing street seating, but if you can catch it on a nice evening, or balmy day, you've got a nice people-watching spot to enjoy a cold drink and healthy, vegan-friendly bites. 2 times in 4 days! Yup, I'd say I'm a fan! Krystle R. came through with a clutch recommendation! We'd both been debating fish tacos in the area. We came up with the usual suspects, but then out of nowhere she said she went to CC and had some bomb fish tacos. Baja style to be exact. Less than a week later I find myself here. The place I've passed countless times, writing it off as something fancier than it really was. I am so glad I went, that is all I can say. I would have went 4 out of 4 days if that wasn't too over the top. Being an equal opportunist, I wanted to give the grilled and Baja style (fish) tacos an even change. Boy am I glad I did, to balance out the fried, the grilled is a perfectly complimentary plate partner. Please don't get me started on their rice, it has a hint of butter and garlic drizzled over it. The combo plate (to get rice and beans - or double rice in my case) is where it's at. So I literally ordered the same meal twice. But, during both occasions I was able to get a bite of other menu items. The Bacon Blue Burger is all things burgerlicious. The burger patty has great flavor, and you really can't go wrong with bacon, blue cheese, avocado, and the (average burger) produce! Sidenote - this doesn't come with fries, make sure you order them if you want them! The next time I was able to have a few (like 10) bites of a carnitas burrito! Their carnitas are on point. Like I've Yelped before, I basically judge a Mexican restaurant on their carnitas - it's a deal breaker for me! Their was delicious and the burrito was heavenly! Just the four things I have, leave me salivating for the rest of their menu items and re-ordering these four times :) NOTE TO YELPERS - the hours are wrong, as of 6/10/14 they are closed at 9PM on all nights. Their 10PM closing has been changed and they can't seem to update via Yelp! However, they will still serve you as if they aren't closed at 8:50PM and let you enjoy your meal without daggers from their employees. The staff, on both occasions, has been completely sweet and helpful in describing menu items. Being newbies, we asked a few too many questions our first visit. They also have chips and salsa available! Again, this place is not fancy at all and that's what I love about it. Also, they have plenty of Vegan and vegetarian options.
