Very friendly, good food for decent price and love the cause and giving back to the community!

The food flavor is a solid 3 but the nobility of their mission to feed everyone in need is worthy of a 4. The place is clean and providing both fresh food and respite from the weather in a very welcoming and safe space. During our lunch visit, at least four persons that appeared to be in need entered and were warmly welcomed, fed and treated with the dignity every human deserves. For this reason alone, everyone should support Cafe 180. To be balanced, however, the foot is rather bland. Fresh ingredients, to be sure, but no one item was memorable for our group. The Walnut/Goat Cheese salad needs a bit more sweetness and the dressing is too simple. The French Dip is a nice roll, toasted well, but the dip sauce has a long way to go to be developed into a more salty/savory addition. The Turkey sandwich, likewise is fresh but needs an aoli or perhaps the option for cranberry compot. And the Snickerdoodle Cookie was undercooked and honestly tasted like a disappointing gluten-free desert. I fear that the food is underperforming at a level that will undermine the overall mission to feed all comers. Sadly, unless the food steps up, the myriad of visitors who benefit from Cafe 180's charity will soon be in need of finding another resource. read more

The cheese pull gets five stars alone. But we also ordered pizza and a pita and it was all sooo good. I'm not knocking a star off for this, because it's a non profit, but damn the vibe is so pretentious. IDK who they were but a table full of people that are obviously associated with the place were next to us and the vibe given to our table by them was so insanely "we're better than you, how dare you look our way" it was insane. HANDS DOWN BEST MEATBALL SUB I HAVE EVER HAD! Some might say subway does it the best, or firehouse subs, or jersey mikes, or their local Italian joint, or Applebees. I respect all of those, but you have GOT to try Cafe 180s meatball sub. Here's how it went down for me: I see the sandwich. I choose the right side to attack. Two hands around the doughy, crispy bread (yes it can be both I don't know how but ask the chefs at this place they did it). Here comes the plane. My mouth starts watering the moment I pick up the scrumptious sub and the water in my mouth is met with red sauce I let drip into my watering mouth and next thing you know I hit the crisp of the bread and move to the doughy part of the bread and boom there is the cheese wow I want more cheese give me more of it and then the meat is here oh yes I love it give me more! That is how the experience went for me. I had such a great experience here. We even ran into a new/old friend, Jane (I say new because we had only known her for a week and a half and old because she first knew my oldest brother and then she knows my second oldest brother and know she knows the third oldest brother/youngest brother/kuulest brother [a.k.a. A cafe with a mission! But wait...the food is good too??? YES!!! I was honestly thrilled to try this place for the first time because I heard about how all proceeds go to feeding community in need. But I was pleasantly surprised that everything is made from scratch, including the home baked chocolate chip cookies! The food: I ordered the chicken wrap which I was so excited to take half home as it was such a big portion! It was so light, refreshing and skillfully made (ingredients were cut beautifully)! My Dad had the mozzarella chicken sandwich and a half chicken Caesar salad salad. The half salad was huge! Again, the sandwich was enough to take half home! The experience: little did we know when we came in for lunch that day that we would leave more joyful than we entered! Everyone was so welcoming and really cared to know more about us. Visiting from Texas on business and was introduced to this place. Was pleasantly greeted and informed of their innovative concept. Set your own price from what you might typically pay from the equivalent in another restaurant (average of $12-$15 per person). Seems they offer working for your food, too, if one does not have the money. There were several diners in action working for food. What a wonderful service to the community! The food was fresh, delicious and very tasty. I especially enjoyed the Italian sandwich on sourdough bread. A delightful little spot for a nourishing meal while supporting a great cause. Yes please! This place gets it right on all levels. Delicious food - check. Huge menu to eat you way thru - check. Friendly environment - check. Plus one extra, this is inspired by the SAME cafe downtown where you pay what you can afford. That means it can be a time donation or something comparable to whatever your last meal out cost. We spoke to one of the owners (Sonia York?) The concept is humbling and I was thrilled that this shop that is open from 11-2 is part of a huge community effort. You never know what someone else may be going thru. What if you could be sponsoring a life changing meal? The salads, sandwiches and cookies are so fresh. The water cups they use are stainless, so the water is extra cold. This place just knocks it out of the park on all levels. The parking is generous, just like the restaurant concept. Look, run a charity or run a business, but don't charge people restaurant prices for sub-school cafeteria fare. I paid $8 for the only sandwich on the menu of this "sandwich cafe". It consisted of a small chicken breast on a slider size bun slathered in commercial bbq sauce. No pickles, no chips, no nuthin. Both were still so dry that they were falling into pieces as I ate it. Which didn't take long because there wasn't much there. I still ended up covered in sauce because the whole container was swimming in it and covered the outside of the bun. The most frustrating sandwich I've ever eaten. If you're going to mess me up, at least make it worth it. And it took ten minutes for that to show up despite my being the only person there. I'm sure they're doing something nice for someone somewhere, but if I want to donate my money I'll just do that and not expect bad food in return. read more

This place was fantastic! Clean, quiet, excellent service, easy parking, and delicious food! What more could you want? The "business" model for this non-profit restaurant is pay what you can. There is no minimum for any of the food, so you pay whatever you can or whatever you feel the meal is "worth", and then anything you pay above that is essentially a donation to help other people eat. If you can't pay at all, you can volunteer with them for an hour or so to get your meal paid for. The only thing they charge for is soda ($2). The decor in here was nice and the food I got was very fresh! I ordered the mediterranean pita on a gluten free tortilla and was impressed by the fresh green and the flavorful cucumber sauce. The tortilla was also great, especially considering it was gluten-free. My friend ordered a meatball sandwich with a side salad, and enjoyed his food as well. Cafe 180 is open for lunch only right now, from 11 am to 2 pm. I am really excited to go back and take all my friends so I can help support this awesome place, especially with the housing crisis in and around Denver-- places like this help bring life, humanity and compassion to our community. read more

I came across this place by accident or maybe coincidence when I was homeless in Colorado last year. Being able to volunteer for a decent meal as opposed to the bilge served in shelters was a real treat. Boo is a sweetheart and I really wish there were more places like this. The pizzas sandwiches and soups are awesome and that's all I will say about that. When the pandemic settles ( hopefully) & I return to Colorado maybe I will go back there to dine & and donate to someone else who cant afford to eat! It was amazing to see the people volunteering, those coming in to help for a meal, and those who come in to support the concept. I suggested meeting my friend here after reading the Yelp reviews and learning that they feed the homeless. When we arrived, we were greeted with smiling faces and were advised of their mission which includes exchanging a meal for volunteering time at the restaurant. We placed our order at the counter and then we sat in the patio area, our meals were delivered quickly by yet another happy camper. I ordered the spinach goat cheese salad with walnuts and cranberries and a slice of Margarita pizza. Both the salad and the pizza were delicious, the pizza crust was one of the best I've had since I moved from New York City. Fortunately , it's located within walking distance of my home. I'd strongly recommend looking elsewhere for catering. Our company orders from here twice a week. They send low-quality salads and wraps the first day, and on the second it's clearly the same items leftover from the day before. There's no way to deny that it's old, lettuce is brown and wilted, wraps are soggy and stuck on itself, and the meat is stale. Basically we pay for 2 days worth of food, but can only eat once because day two is inedible. Truly a terrible practice. read more

I stumbled up on this café and had absolutely no idea about the concept. The people working we're happy to explain it to me! It is a nonprofit where you make a minimum donation of four dollars for your meal that you can voluntarily donate as much as you like. The food is fresh and delicious! My husband and I tried the turkey bacon wrap and the Greek wrap. We enjoyed them both! We also tried the chocolate chip cookies and were glad we did! I was a little skeptical about the food given the concept, but I was happily impressed!! Went for Saturday lunch. The interior is very clean and modern, and the cashier was very polite. I ordered the Mediterranean salad and a bowl of lime chili soup. My husband had the meatball sandwich (on pita) and my mother had the French dip. The minimum price per dish is $4, but we happily paid more for such a great cause. While we were waiting for our food, a family came in and began working (cleaning the restaurant) in exchange for their meals, which was really heart-warming. I read an article about Cafe 180 last year and I thought it was an interesting concept. Basically, they have a 4-tier pricing structure for meals. * Pay what you can * Pay what you would typically pay * Pay what you would typically pay, plus a bit more to "pay it forward" * Pay by giving one hour of service My friend an I arrived a few minutes after opening. The space (once a Spicy Pickle) is nice. They also have outdoor seating with removable sections to let in light and air. I must say, one can feel a little put on the spot trying to estimate what your meal is worth, plus a bit more. It is helpful that they have a sign showing the average. I enjoyed a Mediterranean Salad, Buffalo Chicken Pizza, and Shrimp Gumbo soup. The salad was of the quality one would associate with a fine restaurant, and better than many would offer. The Buffalo Chicken Pizza was very fresh (they told me about milling their own flour). The Chicken was flavorful and looked like real chicken (not processed cubes), the crumbled blue cheese was intensely pungent, and there was a decent amount of heat to the buffalo sauce. I am kind of picky about pizza crust, and although this may have not been exactly to my preference, it was rather good, and not at all soggy. The pizza was well cooked. The gumbo had generous amounts of sausage, shrimp and rice. The flavors were good, and it was not at all "fishy". They also threw in a small (and tasty) chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Water and tea are free. I don't really like drinking water out of a metal cup. But, the water was clean and cold and I assume it is better for the environment to use metal cups. I would consider this meal to be a close to perfect "fast casual" dining experience. The place is very clean. I assume this is due to the large number of volunteers who actually outnumbered the diners while I was there. I am eager to visit again, because the Meatball Sandwich I spotted on the way out looked amazing. read more

I've been to Cafe 180 about 4-5 times (only checked in twice tho) but am consistently impressed, and even a little humbled, every time I go here. You order what you want and then offer what you feel is a fair price for the food. It *can* go down as low as $4 -- if you can't afford that, you can volunteer and "exchange some time and energy for a nutritious meal." As they say, they aren't looking to supply handouts; they're offering "hand ups" - giving a break to people who for whatever reason maybe can't afford a market average price for some quality/non-fast food. Another reviewer said the kiosk supports the University of Colorado's catering training program. Whatever the mission or reason, you're assured of 4 things here: 1) Limited operating hours :) - hey, it is what it is...11a-2p usually 2) Quality food - their wraps are pretty substantial; salads are as good or better than I've had in some places, and their cookies are a real treat. Contrary to my check-in comments, I found out their mini white choc macadamia nut ones are returning in September...I raised my fists in victory when I heard *that*. 3) Truly, truly respectful service - always with a smile too. When you realize it's not a typical commerce-based eatery, it kinda hits you and really touches your heart - and they do it uniformly: whether you're like me, or elderly, or destitute, or have some medical condition going on -- they *serve* you here, and 4) This place and your meal isn't going to bust your wallet/purse.
