Pork tenderloin katsu sandwich with Turkish pickles: Think super juicy pork chop. The meat is plump, succulent, and crispy. Add a sweet and savory katsu gravy with some wasabi. The milk bread is nice and crustless, soft and fluffy. To top it off, the bread is nicely buttered. The pickles do their job, although somewhat mild. Located in the Arts District, Cafe 2001 gives off a casual loft vibe with its eclectic furniture and two floor levels (along with an outdoor patio) offering seating. When I first visited, it took me a minute to find the cafe, but thankfully street parking was fairly easy to find on the Sundays that I visited. Once you order at the counter, you get a number and can take any open seating that is available. On my first visit, I tried the Benedictine bacon sandwich along with a slice of the lemon tart. The tart was exquisite with a brûléed top though the flabby bacon texture lessened my enjoyment of the sandwich. I ended up enjoying the smoked trout dish more than the sandwich on a subsequent visit, and it was fun mixing the flavors of the huckleberry compote with the dill, trout, and hash browns. In contrast to my first visit, the passion fruit tart was somewhat a miss; though the tart slice is studded with passion fruit seeds on top, the main flavor underlying the tart is a sweet custard. On my recent visit to Cafe 2001, I kept it simple and grabbed a latte and pastry. The jalapeño cheddar pastry is your best bet if you're going for a savory item rather than sweet. The latte was amazing as well, I love a balanced latte that isn't too strong nor too milky. The woman at the register helped me decide on items to try since it was my first time. Such friendly and kind workers, they were on top of everything the entire time. If you dine in, they give you a number and a server will bring your drink to you! The interior of this cafe is cozy and feels like you're in an action movie scene from the 90's. There is seating downstairs, upstairs and outside as well. My favorite dish was the Tuscan Fries - they were very garlicky and flavorful. There was some rosemary in there too which brightened up the dish! The Avocado Toast with the Roasted Beets was recommended by the staff. The beets were fantastic on the thick, fluffy toast which was smothered in smooth avocado. Cafe 2001.. This cafe is easy to miss but 2001 is the address of the building along 7th Street, however, the entry is at the parking lot entry along Mateo St. This cafe has a really cool layout. Exposed brick building, high ceilings with a 2nd floor perimeter mezzanine with seating and a skylight overhead. Makes for a nice cafe date place. We came here for drinks not too long ago. Cold brew and a matcha coconut latte. The drinks were above average. We didn't have brunch here but the menu did look pretty good along with some of their pastries and cakes. This place has really good food and drinks :) albeit a bit pricey for me who suffers from being stingy (a la Scrooge the duck) but that is the experience of living at the moment I guess. the service was also very nice shoutout to all the employees who happen to have incredible style??? Did the interview involve having to be fashionable? I would not pass. The ambiance is also great there's nice seating, my sibling and I went to go for lunch and study. Parking is free if you can hack it with street parking in arts district (shoutout random street we parked on) also shout out to the server who noticed me and my sibling trying to pour our drink into a to go cup and instead just poured it for us. The next step would be to teach them how to cook pork properly and thoroughly. Absolutely ridiculous and DO NOT RECOMMEND COMING HERE Regardless of how you like your poultry cooked, if it's a personal preference to have it more well done, there is no excuse for attitude and snickering towards your paying customers. The name 2001 had nothing to do with year 2001. It's actually the number of the address lol, but I found the name catchy. The venue somehow gave me that retro warehouse vibe. It's super aesthetic with rays of natural light. The menu somehow felt like featuring Japanese theme with obviously various coffee and tea based drinks. They did serve some brunch menu and several pastries including tarts. Having the matcha canele displayed next to the checkout made me unable to skip it. Other than prolly too much matcha powder on top of it making it kinda powdery, this petite pastry was little pleasure! Crunchy coating, gooey and chewy center, with great balance of sweetness and slight matcha bitterness. I got their iced Hojicha Latte, which got me pleased. The only downsides were it's tad grainy, besides I wish they had either almond or soy milk beyond just whole and oat milk. Perfect cafe to come work in! I got an iced americano and a strawberry tart. The guy who helped me was very friendly, and suggested that the hojicha would go well with my tart but I decided I was feeling more like coffee haha. The upstairs area is perfect to work in, I saw a bunch of people on their laptops (I came on a Sunday morning). They also have a small patio, which is where I decided to sit to enjoy the weather. The tart was good but I wish the strawberries were sweeter. But I will definitely be back to try more food! This cafe recently opened in December of 2024. It is attached to yess restaurant. Parking is only street parking or paid lot. One of the best cafes in la by far. They have a thoughtfully curated menu with items that you can tell were made by a chef. They have various food and dessert options as well as a happy hour. Workers here are amazing. The man at the register with the curly hair was so nice and a great person to have at front of house. Could be a gem. I see the potential. I had a few food items from happy hour menu and a black coffee. Laptop only allowed upstairs after 4pm. Also only black coffee after that time as well. Decent seating and work space with beautiful lighting shinning. If you're a creative, you would appreciate it and get good inspo to complete your work. The food was fantastic. The egg salad sando was creamy and salty with a kick from the beet relish, however the side salad was extremely bitter and more an afterthought than anything. We also ordered tuscan fries for the table, which were overcooked and cold at the same time. It had little to no flavor, contrary to the description. I just found it odd that there was 2 unpeeled cooked pieces of garlic cloves?? Anyway, the fig tart was the star of the show, but the chunks of fig made for a very clunky eating experience. My first bite of my sandwich was literal heaven, as u know I'm a sucker for a good sandwich and the Benedictine was for sure a 10/10, the bread was freshly made, the spread was so light and creamy,bacon was somewhat Smokey & the Tuscan fries were my all time favorite as well. Loved how it had roasted little garlics in there, great way to eat good and boost my immune system, & it also had rosemary in it. I ate my garlic first then get a fry with a piece of salted rosemary and oh man so so good. Heard it's a sister cafe to a Japanese restaurant nearby. Charming and cool space. Lovely vibe, nice decor + classical music playing...yes, please! The chef knows food and knows how to make GOOD food. Clean, fresh and extremely palatable savory food. The dessert was tasty too. We got Benedictine Bacon Sandwich and Egg & Relish Sandwich, which were both delish. However, the Avocado Toast with Peas & Pea Shoots was the highlight or stand out for me. What a stellar dish! It has now became my favorite Avocado Toast. Light vinaigrette with peas and pea shoots on top of the avocado toast is smart. All the ingredients complement each other very well. There are two bathrooms upstairs, but idk if there's an accessible option downstairs. Ambience was chill and they were playing video game / movie OSTs during our visit lol I clocked Harry Potter, Journey, and The Last of Us Pork & Pistachio Terrine Plate: 2.5/5 I wanna preface this by saying this was my first time having terrine so I'm not sure if this was loyal to how they're normally served in France. All I know is that I wasn't a fan to the dish itself but that doesn't reflect of what I think of Cafe 2001 overall lol Pork Tenderloin Katsu Sandwich: 3.5/5 My partner ordered this and I can only speak on a shared bite or two but this was good. It's a very hefty slice of pork with a slab of katsu sauce tucked in between shokupan. Can't say I've ever seen it accompanied with Turkish pickles but it was just fine without it Lemon Tart: 4/5 The server offered to bring this out as our dessert towards the end of our lunch and we happily obliged. It's a creamy and puckery lemon custard with a thin layer of a bruleed top accompanied by creme fraiche in a standard tart crust. Nothing extraordinary but it certainly put a smile on my face Matcha + Milk + Coffee "Japanese Style": 4/5 Not a matcha snob (nor a matcha girly), but this was pretty good. We ordered it with oat milk, so I can't say how it compares with regular milk but the matcha flavor was bold enough, just didn't really taste the coffee imo Iced Americano: 5/5 Refreshing and exactly what I expected. my friend and i decided to try something new, so we went to cafe 2001 (we saw it on tiktok) and unfortunately our visit was not so great. some of the factors were uncontrollable. the smell of sewage filled the cafe at some point so our visit was a bit short. we waited for a matcha for a while, we weren't very impressed with it either. our matcha felt so bland, watered down with milk bland. we added some sweetener but it genuinely just tasted like matcha with water (when we both ordered some type of milk) the matcha wasn't so great we couldn't finish it. there was not that many people either but the time we waited for our matcha felt a bit long, was not worth it. would rather go to a cafe that has a long line and has great matcha. maybe their coffee's better, but i'd rather go somewhere else and buy a $6-8 matcha read more
