Two desperate visitors, weighed down by luggage and travel bags stuffed to the brim with candy and souvenirs, scrambled across the beautiful Market Square area in search of brunch. Hungry and distraught, they were almost ready to give up - every other place required a reservation, had an hour long+ wait, or just didn't look tantalizing enough. They laid eyes on Cafe 4: a modern, charming cafe with a restaurant attached to it. There were industrial pipes that ran above their heads. Circular planet-lights hung from the ceilings and adorned the bar counter. It was 11 AM: Margarita? Cold brew? Americano? You name it, they got it. Seating was lightning quick. The spacious inside boasted a loud and warming environment in which the scents of different soups, breads, drinks, and burgers swam by invitingly. The visitors didn't even speak a word to each other as they picked up their menus, eyes frantically darting down to the brunch section. One ordered Huevos Ranchero, a plate with beef patties, arugula, applewood smoked bacon, and fried eggs to your liking. Avocados and tomatos adorned the top of the dish; it was as delicious as it was colorful. The other traveller ordered the ole' reliable Chicken & Waffles, a rustic and savory meal deemed worthy by those who needed calories, and fast. The chicken skin was delightfully salty and the white breast inside was equally tender. Yeah, these waffles probably came from Costco and were thrown into the waffle machine, but who cares. It came with syrup and sawmill gravy. Can't ask for much more when it comes to a pre-airport meal. Our two travellers left Cafe 4 a little heavier than before, but much happier. read more

We had a late brunch on a Sunday. Overall it was a good experience. Fair prices, GREAT dessert (especially the portion size), quick service and they had three mocktail options (I'm in recovery and my husband doesn't drink so this is huge for us!). Unfortunately there were some downsides that caused 3 stars instead of 5. We were bummed the had NO printed menus. Because of a learning disability I don't do well with scanned menus. I need to have something bigger to hold and review. They helped us and gave us a tablet but it's pretty frustrating they had NO paper menus for my husband or anyone else "because they are under new ownership". I'll elaborate on the good but I had one big health/safety concern. The waiter brought 2 small plates/appatizers to the table next to us. After about 5 minutes they told him they weren't for them. The waiter realized that they were for another table and just brought them outside to another table and never thought anything of this. Not only was it now sitting out there for a number of minutes out of the kitchen but it has been placed at another table and potentially handled. I spent many years as a restaurant GM and I can tell you this is not acceptable. Now onto the pretty decent experience. We each ordered a mocktail. I had the mojito one. Unfortunately they used mint extract and not actual mint leaves and it was WAY too much mint and way too fake tasting. I only drank half. My husband had the blackberry mocktail and it was really tasty but pretty sugary. I LOVE that they had three options and that they were just 4 dollars, we just wish they were done with care. My husband had the stuffed french toast and a side of bacon. It was really good but it was really small. He was still very hungry after. I had the barbacoa hash. It was good but not amazing. Portion size was ok. I normally take home half a portion at most restaurants and I was able to eat all of this really easily. It wasn't bad by any means, just not wonderful. We had the bread pudding for dessert. Mostly because my hubby was still very hungry and this made up for a lot of the other stuff. We'd go back and pick up just dessert from them on a trip down to market square. It was HUGE and it was just 6.50! We devoured it and would absolutely order it again. Maybe some night we'll bring our dogs down to their pet friendly patio for some sodas and desserts at night. That would be wonderful. There were definitely redeeming qualities of the experience (price and dessert were main ones) and we'd likely give them another chance once they get through the new ownership switch over which seems to be causing some problems. read more

First time here, and I will most definitely return! Our bar manager was outstanding..great drink & perfect pour ! We've never had fried green tomatoes, and believe me these were delicious. The short ribs/collard greens/Grits were some of the best I've have in Knoxville! I had the pleasure of tasting my kid's hamburger and fries.... Super tasty and this 13 year old is a hamburger critic. The salmon salad was dressed just right and salmon was cooked well. Deserts are a must here .. a very short desert menu but they absolutely killed it! The crème brûlée was perfect and Chocolate cake was rich, tasted like a chocolate truffle! You can't go wrong with the service, from the bar manager, to our hostess & server, everyone was friendly and attentive. We started out at the bar with 2 Old Fashioned's on a dreary day - my husband had a traditional and I had a Lunchbox Old Fashioned (peanut butter whiskey, bitters and raspberry syrup). Carly made both of them and they were awesome! We accompanied them with the lobster bacon flatbread, which lured us to stay for dinner. I had the half chicken. Can I say that I know healthcare professionals say to not eat the skin? I say come here and eat the skin and walk it off - it was BEAUTIFULLY crisped. Stopped in for Sunday brunch with some girlfriends started out with orange sickle Mamosa, which was very good and sweet. We tried the pimento cheese. It was amazing. It came with pepper jelly on top to add a bit of sweetness, and the pita was very hot and fresh although we did have to ask for more. I had the Cajun hash. It was very fulfilling and delicious. The waiter was very friendly will be back for their dinner. We sat out on the patio. Great place to people watch. You can park in the state street garage for free after 6 and on weekends on level three there is a bridge to walk across to gate Street and into market Square. read more

Nice venue, and more importantly nice hours since they actually stick to it. The one time I was in the area, it seemed like every single restaurant around them had taken off early for the day. So thankfully these guys were still open. Service was relatively quick and the staff was relatively friendly as well. The food was definitely good though. Portions were reasonable, and the taste was quite good. Apparently you can request them to make the chicken and waffles spicy, and when I got the dish it surprisingly actually was! We decided to try Café 4 for Brunch and our experience was mixed. The appetizers we tried were both excellent: the Warm Pimiento Dip with Naan and pepper jelly, and the Tomato Bisque Soup. Our mains were a bit of a different story. I guess I had a different vision of the Cajun Hash than the Chef. Based on the description, I envisioned Andouille sausage diced to a size that matched the potatoes, onions and peppers, combined together. Instead there were three thin slices of Andouille sausage around the perimeter. I also envisioned a light blanket of hollandaise over the poached eggs. There was instead a slight drizzle of it over a portion of the hash. Okay, so the description did say Hash instead of Benedict, but they could be a bit more generous with the Hollandaise. I don't think the chef liked poaching eggs (some don't) as they were both poached quite hard. We're I to return, I would include a request that the eggs be poached soft (I prefer them that way) . Another Chef must have prepared my partner's scrambled eggs for the breakfast he ordered as they were quite runny. The average egg consistency between the two orders averaged somewhere in the middle, but I would suggest clarifying your expectation on both poached and scrambled eggs here. The Service was a bit spotty but they were quite busy and it appeared that our server was near her limit as several other staff pitched in from time to time. Overall, I'd give Café 4 an mediocre rating for Sunday Brunch, but would give them another chance during a less stressful time period. read more

It was extremely busy down town Saturday. The host staff was quoting 2 1/2 to 3 hours. We had reservations. But I found it odd because there were 2 4 tops that were never sat during our whole meal. Server was ok, seemed busy. They were out of several wines by the glass. We ordered drinks and an appetizer when he came to the table. We waited 10-15 minutes for drinks (mine took longer - out of wine). The appetizer arrived then the entrees showed up in 2-3 minutes. So timing was definitely off. And I guess it is good since hubby's steak was cold and almost raw- he joked he had to stab it a couple times to keep it from running away. And to top this off it was more fat that meat. His whipped potatoes were COLD. The only thing on his plate that was warm were the Brussels sprouts. We would have said something but server didn't come back around until the very end (we had tickets to a show). Definitely wasn't worth the almost $90 tab without tip). Really the only real enjoyable part of the meal was the appetizer (pimento cheese dip with pepper jelly). I gave them 3 stars, because it was busy. Will update if we go back. read more

Went for a friend's birthday. She had reservations and we met the party there so we were able to sit immediately. I ordered the cheesesteak and did another girl. A friend got the fish and chips and our other friend ordered the shrimp and grits (it doesn't say shrimp and grits but it is-it's called "LOW COUNTRY SHRIMP andouille sausage, red peppers, tomatoes, onions, goat cheese, cajun cream sauce"). She doesn't like grits so they let her substitute it for linguine. My food was ok. The cheese sauce was good but the meat was a little dry. I was not thrilled with the bread and didn't eat it other than trying one bite. If I were to get it again I would get not bread and extra cheese sauce to make it less dry and dip my fries in. read more

First off maybe was a bad night but I don't know if our experience is going to be worth going back to give them another try (especially with so many other options available). First off... we had an hour wait even though we had made reservations (there was some kind of error but no real apologies to make up for it). Then after we were finally seated took over 15 minutes to just get our water. When the coffee showed up it was luke warm. We waited long time to get drinks refilled. Don't know if problem w staffing or just our table but didn't appear other tables were having same issues. Soooo we then finally get apps and she forgot to put in the wings order and wasn't until other apps were finished before she discovered she didn't put in order for them (we even got charged for them). Otherwise all the apps were delicious albeit not exactly served hot. Flatbread cooked unevenly and fries were hot and cold (like two diff batches combined thinking one will warm the other). They did however taste good. Entrees took another long wait but we appreciated the gap between courses. Again many of these were cold and warm. Mixed reviews on taste. Lobster Mac and Cheese was good (should be a side or shared). Way too rich for one meal. Lol. The "lobster" I would guess was langoustine and not Maine. They were real tiny fishy tasting bites. Chicken and waffles were okay. Chicken was a little cold and over cooked on one but good on other. Most of it was left on both plates (almost all of it on one) and wasn't even asked if everything was ok. Fish tacos were also cold. Tomato Bisque was a very small portion and guess what... cold. It wasn't even half bowl full. It was almost comical but the end. Only thing done quick was getting the bill taken care of. Lol read more
