First visited Cafe Allegro about a month ago and had a wonderful experience. The secret back alley entrance, the classic old school Seattle building, and cool décor all enhanced the experience. The best part of the visit however, was Kate and the great, very clove-y Chai Tea Latte she made me. She happily gave me an orientation to the U-District, the great history of this business, her history here, and in between brief chats she ran around cleaning keeping the place absolutely sterile. The most amazing thing from my visits here happened today. I walked in and Kate immediately knew who I was and made my drink - one month after my first visit. With this kind of cheerful staff so focused on customer service that they can remember a one-time customer 30 days later - you cannot find a better coffee experience in King County. read more

UW student here - this is hands down my favorite study spot. It's a little off the main area, but that adds to its charm and makes the general crowd less touristy. The tea comes in a silver teapot and the overall ambience is so peaceful and warm. The people who work here are always so friendly, too. 100% recommend. read more

Cafe Allegro is a place that I'm very familiar with during my undergraduate years. It's a nice cafe to study in, especially if you're looking for a place with lots of tables, fast Wi-Fi, and a cafe atmosphere. However, if you're looking for anything past that, I wouldn't recommend this place. It's close to the university, tucked in an alleyway, but try not to venture too much up the alley late at night because there can be some sketchy people. They roast their own coffee, but their drinks are only average and nothing special, and prices have increased since I was a freshman. The quality of their staff varies too. Although I used to always see this really nice barista, today I was greeted by this angry employee who glared at me while I was ordering, hastily put my drink down, and walked away all without a word. It was pretty disappointing since I feel that since there's nothing all that great about the drinks, I should at least expect some decent service from here to keep coming back. All in all, it's a good place to get some work done in a convenient location, but I wouldn't seek this place out purely for the coffee. read more

Wow! My friend, who is a student at UW, told me to come here during my visit and I adore this shop! The location was a little bit tricky to find but not too bad, I almost like that it's more hidden. The space is great. It's darker but there are lights over the tables so you can read/get work done. Fun decor, a decent amount of seating, it's very cozy. There are big windows out into the alley which are really nice so you don't feel like you're underground or in a box. The baristas were super friendly and got my drink started for me before I even paid so that it would be out quickly which I really appreciated. They were really kind and welcoming! My cup of coffee was fantastic and I was glad they had alternative milks (my milk of choice: soy) And I had a croissant as well which was delicious. Stopped here while visiting from Texas. Such a cozy little spot! I had the daily special (Ethiopian, Guatemalan, Costa Rican blend) and my boyfriend had a macchiato, both were delightful! We also shared a Christmas cookie, also delightful. It is a little hard to find with your GPS if you're not from the area. Its located in an alley way. Luckily enough I had read this online so we had an idea for where to look, but if we hadnt I would have thought my GPS was wrong because there's businesses on the outside of the street but no sign until you get around to the alley. I don't know if it was the coffee itself or the entirety of the cafe and sipping the coffee in the rainy Seattle weather but sitting there just felt so relaxing. The front area is a little small but there is more seating in the back where it's quieter to be able to do work. Will definitely be back when we visit again! read more

It's apparently Seattle's oldest coffee shop and it has all of the elements to not question that title at all! It is out of the way, down an alley and you kind of need to be watching for it in order not to miss it. I make at least one monthly trip to the U District to get my Scarecrow Video fix and to check out shops and restaurants that I have bookmarked. I hit Cafe Allegro a month or two ago and was glad I did! Their pastry items all look very homemade and wonderful and the hot drinks have that extra attention needed to make sure you are in a good indie coffee shop. I had one of their sugar cookies and a mighty fine iced coffee brew which hit the spot on that hot summer day I came into this place. A great coffee shop...but of course it is Seattle...lots of good coffee shops everywhere! read more

Might be the oldest but who cares? me and my friend were traveling hard and road warrior weary. We both were wearing Keen hiking sandals cause you all know traveling with laced shoes thru airports is a biach right? Having just arrived, we were really tired but wanted to get a feel for the area around the university instead of high tailing it to the hotel. My traveling companion had to get to a conference at the university the next day. We walk in and immediately the sarky barista says "matching shoes". like it's a bad thing....like he's trying to make fun of the "matching tourists". Was he being friendly? Well, maybe, but the smirk he was carrying beneath his upper lip told me otherwise. I was too damned tired to turn around and find another cafe, and besides, maybe he was just, well being... another kind of friendly. After all, this could be a kind of passive aggressive welcome to Seattle. Undaunted, I start telling him how fantastic the shoes are for hiking, throw em in the wash like running shoes....like how cool they are...funny, he doesn't want to "play" insult the patrons anymore.. My friend orders an espresso, you know, for the price of an insult you oughta get good coffee. Yo! Suck azzz barista your espresso bites. Tastes like licking an ash tray and your sarcasm saved me money and the awful experience of drinking one cause I shared with my companion with similar shoes. Next time think twice before making fun of your clients. From the numbers I saw all during my stay there you could sure use the business and a lesson on how to attract customers, not drive them away. read more

If you're looking to grab a quick cup of coffee near campus this may be the place for you!! The location is a bit tricky to find but not impossible. If you know where MOD pizza is follow the alley and you'll see glass windows which is where this cafe is located! Plus there are signs outside, which are helpful! I came in around 8am and it wasn't too busy or packed! The barista was nice and quickly made my drink! I ordered a hazelnut latte with hemp milk! Trying hemp milk for the first time and it's good! However I noticed they do free pour the syrups so if you don't have much of a sweet tooth I'd made sure to ask for less flavoring! The reasoning behind why I gave it a five stars even though my latte was too sweet for my preference, the overall tasty of the coffee is just amazing!! The cup I got my coffee in was surprising just because it wasn't your usual mug for a hot drink but I did like it! ... I wonder if anyone at this place has ever heard of bleach. The bathroom REAKS of urine. It's so overwhelming it actually made me nauseous. I went in the morning and got a coffee, with the intention of staying all day to work on an application and get lunch. I had to leave because every time I went to the bathroom I felt sick to my stomach from the smell. Are you fu*king kidding me? Do you know what bleach is? Do you know that it disinfects? Do you know that if you clean something with bleach the smells goes away? I would expect that type of care from a ghetto gas station but not a coffee shop. Will not be back for that reason alone. It was really interesting to come to read the reviews here after an awful, day-ruining experience at Cafe Allegro this morning and find that someone else had a very similar experience with the same barista a month ago. From working in the industry as a server and bartender for years, I usually side with the server if they are a bit short or impatient because I know how much of a grind it can be. I tip well and am understanding. But today I simply wanted to grab something to drink and eat before a long workday ahead and a male barista came out of nowhere and was unbelievably rude and degrading toward my friend and I. I had asked for a drink and they were out of the ingredients for it, so I stood off to the side so my friend could order instead. The male server appeared from the back without knowing I had already ordered with someone else (but that they didn't have it) and seemed put off that I was standing there as he was confused about who to ring up. He gave us a look like we were idiots and loudly commented on how weird it was we weren't standing in order. My friend said her order as the milk steamer was being used so it was loud and hard to hear. The barista said verbatim, "Look at me when you're talking to me." I know when I am being talked down to, and felt so violated that I was in shock of how toxic an interaction with a stranger could be for two minutes of the day. Rather than ordering once he verbally attacked us a third time, I walked out and decided I will not be returning, which is unfortunate because i would much rather support a local shop than a corporate one. I enjoy a little sass or sarcasm, and not having someone just be overly cheery or fake in customer service, but this guy was publicly shaming us and being so off-putting that I'm surprised Cafe Allegro is continuing to employ him. To be fair, my previous experience was awesome and the server was welcoming, but this was unbelievably awful and I hope that it is sorted out. read more

I visited the awesome UW campus and went out of my way to look for this place since it was mentioned as one of Seattle's most oldest coffee shops. I am not sure if it is a Seattle thing but being from Phoenix, I was a bit sketched out by the fact that I had to go through a back alley before entering this shop. It was well worth after all. I guess sometimes you do have to put up with things before discovering the hidden gem. I love the green vines covering the brick building, the wooden signs, the benches by the big windows and the string lights upstairs. They also made one of the best iced mocha I've ever tasted. It was bold yet creamy, icy and chocolaty. Perfect! The overcast weather made it so nice to just sit there, enjoying your coffee while feeling the warmth from the natural soft lighting coming through the windows. The price was very decent, too compare to other so-called "well-known" coffee shops. Perfect place to write a report, chill with friends, listen to music, read a book, or whatever relaxing thing you enjoy doing. Will definitely come back with more friends next time I visit Seattle again :) read more

This is the first time I've ever felt so urged to write an angry review on Yelp -- just so that I could vocalize the total embarrassment that I've experienced with one of the workers. I'm in no way a regular at this cafe, and I will not be returning anytime soon. I had ordered a white mocha and the O'Brien Burrito. There were two baristas, one was a female and the other was a male. The woman was super kind and greeted me with a smile on her face, but the male seemed like he didn't really enjoy my presence. I've seen the male worker there once about a year ago, and he did give a bit of a condescending attitude towards me, but I just assumed that he had a long day. I took both into account, and decided not to tip that day and thought "maybe next time". Once I had signed my order, the male barista flipped the screen, made a face, and rudely uttered "wow". There were many people in line, and I felt completely uncomfortable! I've never experienced such a horrible situation with a barista before-- let alone, a horrible situation with a barista at all. He began to walk away and heated my burrito up in the microwave. I was still standing in line, and was waiting for a response like "your burrito should be out shortly", but he completely ignored me proceeded to take the next customer's order. Once the burrito was "finished" he planted the dish on the side for me to grab without calling my order or handing it to me, even though he did just the opposite for the other customers. At that point I wanted to throw my uneaten, half-cold burrito and unfinished coffee in the garbage! I no longer wanted to stand another minute in there as I felt like I was disrespected. Right as I finished my meal, I stormed out of the cafe. I was so appalled and sadden by the fact a nice cafe had to be ruined with terrible service. Thankfully, there are other cafes around University District with spectacular service that I would gladly give my full tip to. If you don't want your day ruined, I would advise you to skip out on Cafe Allegro, and check out other cafes that the district offers!! read more

Came here for a quick coffee when I was in town visiting Udub. At first it was hard to find since it was in an alley but I guess that adds to the appeal. It was super early when we went so hardly any line. I ended up getting my usual white mocha. Their service is worse than a clogged toilet. I'm a heavy coffee drinker, but in the few past weeks I have been going to Allegro because I like their drip (not too bitter compared to other coffee shops nearby if it's helpful) and their pastries. I tip all the time when I go out but I am also a working student, so at cafe's I tip based on how rich I feel for the day. Today I went to get a small drip and pastries for my friends and decided to not tip. BIG MISTAKE. The guy working looks at the screen and rolls his eyes, tosses the bag of pastries towards the edge of the counter, and says "thanks for not tipping". Like H E L L O, the guy in front of me didn't tip. Just because we tip in America doesn't mean you're entitled to your tip. Of course I didn't say anything because I was shocked and that guy working has a pretty bad life. TL;DR If you see a short guy in his early 40s with already graying hair and tattoo sleeves, please turn around and try out their almond biscotti another day. This hidden cafe is super cute and a great late night study spot. I ordered my usual complicated-ass drink (hot decaf latte with coconut milk and vanilla flavor) with high hopes they'd nail it. I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious the drink was. The main thing I didn't like was how the barista didn't call out the drink when he finished it. Am I just supposed to read his mind and know? I was sitting in the back area with a friend so there's really no way for me to know unless he calls it like every other coffee shop. This is one of my favorite places to study while I enjoy a very nice size cup of coffee, tea or Italian soda. The size is nice and so is the flavor. The iced chai latte is one of my favorites because it's so strong in flavor. The atmosphere is also nice. There's usually no blaring music and there is also an upstairs place to study and work if you find downstairs is kind of crowded. There's just a nice Seattle vibe to it and as a college student it's nice to come here to focus. I really liked their prices too. I went to Cafe Allegro for the first time this morning. The cafe is a little shabby (and the floors looked dirty), but I suppose that's part of it's charm. The bathroom is tiny and gross (reminded me of an airplane bathroom) and full of graffiti. It looks like a bathroom at a dive bar and not a coffee shop. Service was disappointing. The barista barked at us about where the line should be formed (chill out, dude). The other barista who rang me up was not friendly. No smiles, no thank yous, and lackluster service overall. I ordered a pot of Darjeeling tea. They use loose leaf tea here and you're served a metal individual teapot and a strainer. The problem here is that the cup they give you only holds 8oz. When you pour and strain your tea you can't possible get all the leaves out because the cup is so tiny. The tea, and leaves, continue to steep in the pot. My tea was so bitter by the end that it was unpalatable. That's a horrible way to serve loose leaf tea! I'd much rather have a tea bag I can pull out after the brewing time. I probably won't be returning, and that's a shame because I go to UW and it's a rather convenient location. read more

I feel like this place is only famous because it's a "hole in the wall" cafe. But just because it's hidden doesn't mean it's good. Americanos, drip coffee, latte, every drink I have had there I have had better somewhere else on the ave. Only drink I think they do well is probably the hot apple cider (which I don't even know if it counts since it's just steamed apple juice). Also the interior is just not cozy or comfortable at all. Longtime patron of this U-District standby. Was never a UW student but this place is maybe where I'm most productive. The high ceilings give you lots of space to think, and it's always filled with the light din of community. Sure the coffee ain't fancy, but get off your high horse and have a cup of joe. The upstairs patio is my best-kept secret during the summer... relaxing spot with a real city feel. So much better than other cafes in the area. read more

It's like you're part of a secret society when you go to Allegro. The entrance to Allegro is in a back alley that's blocked by a recently built building. To indicate their location, Allegro advertises using a sandwich board they position on 42nd street right next to Magus books. Allegro is partitioned into three parts: the main cafe, the back cafe, and the upstairs. The main cafe is the loudest/busiest, with the baristas getting their coffee on and customers coming in and out. The back cafe has several booths and is quite conducive to a mixture of people watching and studying. The upstairs is the most isolated, and should be left for those who are super serious about their studying. The coffee and baked goods are okay, nothing spectacular. I'm a fan of this place more for the combination of their adequate food/beverage offerings in addition to the good use of space. Also, since it's in such a poorly positioned location, the place maintains only a steady flow of people. I think much of their clientèle comes from word of mouth advertisement. For University students, this is a great place to study. The coffee shop caters to many different types of studiers from those who need that coffee shop bustle to those who only study in silence. It is my first time visiting Washington.. and coming to this little cute cafe is one of my highlights. Its located close to campus, but is a hidden gem that one is lucky to encounter. It seems to be a longstanding establishment, one in which you could tell that love and care has been laced within the drinks, the environment, and the people. The people serving the coffee and drinks were so friendly and even shared more about the culture and history here. My coffee was SPOT ON AND CHEAP I MIGHT ADD. I love the seating is open and that there is PLENTY of it. They even have communal crossword puzzles and stuff like DAT come :) enjoy. read more

This place is grungy, old, and not worth your time. Baristas are rude and demanding. I didn't leave a tip and they glared at me which made me feel really uncomfortable. I was just there today. Apparently it's their 30th year. I was told that they were the first "espresso only" cafe in Seattle. They even just started serving drip coffee 2 or 3 years ago. I was just chatting with one of the baristas so I could have heard wrong. They have wifi and the coffee is really good. I had the mocha and it was very good. They have plenty of seating and even an outdoor deck area with plenty of little birds to keep you company. It was a warm, sunny day today and I had a nice time drinking my coffee at Allegro. Allegro claims to be the first cafe in Seattle. Wait, were there no cafes in Seattle before 1975? Oh well, I certainly wasn't around back then, so I'm not going to dispute their authenticity. It's kind of a hidden place in an alley right across from MOD Pizza and kind of close to Magus Bookstore, but that doesn't seem to hurt its popularity, as this place always has a ton of people from what I've seen. And I'm not surprised, because I kind of like this place. I wouldn't say it's the most private or quiet place to get work done, but it's a refreshing place to just relax. I was drawn here by their offer they were giving a while ago; it was a $20 gift card for ten dollars. Not a bad deal any time of the day. It's really just a sheet of construction paper with the amount and a signature on it. But anyway, with that, I got a bunch of their donuts, one of each kind. They're quite good, very fresh and creative but rather small and expensive. I'm sure they could keep a business on these donuts alone, but they didn't seem to have very many of them, and thus I seem to have cleaned them out with my greedy purchase. Hehe. On another visit, I got a grande mocha here. They don't appear to have the Venti size! It's not a big deal because it's probably better than average. Kind of plain though, but the girl who made it also made up for it by adding a lot of whipped cream to it. Yum. Prices are also low for drinks, or at least "competitive." It's hard to define what a low price is nowadays. Nonetheless, I was pretty happy with the drink part. I spent the remainder of my gift card on the pastries they had. If these are original and homemade, then they've really outdone themselves! These are appealing, tasty, and look carefully crafted. I wonder whether they have a huge bakery in the back somewhere where they make these things. The place honestly didn't look that big at first glance, but there's a room in the back with some more tables, so it's bigger than it looks. So I wouldn't be surprised if they had some secret area where they make these delicious pastries. Full disclaimer, I gave up coffee over a year ago and have converted to tea. (Please put your pitchforks away, Seattle!) That being said, from my coffee years you can get great coffee up and down this city, what sets a cafe apart is it's ambience. Allegro has that two fold. This place is slightly challenging to find.. look for MOD Pizza.. and always busy.. but you can head upstairs for extra seating! I personally love the upstairs area for it's natural light and it's always just a bit quieter. On a sunny day, you can't beat it. Their tea selection is solid and their iced tea has a nice spice note to it, but maybe that's just seasonal. Either way, I appreciate that I can enjoy my pumpkin spice-esque tea along with everyone else. They have a good range of light food items to munch on with some day-olds and a pastry happy hour which starts in the late evening to get some discounts. Great place to study/get some work done on the ave, or take out some of those board games and have a sober hangout with friends. read more

I came here to study with my friend after walking past this place several times and always wanting to come here. This place is kind of hinden away in the alley but when you enter in the space feels open and inviting. There were a lot of seats available because we came on a rainy Saturday morning and we ordered our drinks(Chai tea lattes) quickly and received them quickly. Really I would give this place 3.5 stars. Service: 5/5 fast but you have to get it yourself. The people are friendly :) Quality: 4/5 other my friend and I ordered Chai tea lattes and they were pretty good and came in glass mugs. Variety: 3/5 they had a very typical menu of cold and hit drinks. Some fresh juice which is cool but nothing that really stood out. Their pastry case with bagels and some pastries and donuts was also kind of minimalistic. There's a lovely balcony on the 2nd floor that I would love to try out once the weather gets better. Their lattes are divine - try getting a shot of the lavender syrup! First and foremost, I love that it's tucked away in an alleyway off The Ave and 15th avenue in the U-District. As soon as you come in, you see that there is seating that get taken up real quick and there's not much room to stand to wait for your order. The barista makes the drinks and puts it on the counter right in front of the line and so you have awkward instances where you have to say "excuse me" to get your cup of coffee or pastry of some sort. Service is great, they have one barista usually making the drinks and it's efficient because they would ask each person what they're having before making it and they have one person doing all the cashiering -- at least from what I've seen. Other than that, it's a nice place for meeting friends, talking it up with someone, or doing homework. There is more seating upstairs but as for doing homework or work, there is limited access to outlets. Overall, I love it here for reasons other than coffee. 4/5 stars because the coffee is okay, I usually get the vanilla latte or white mocha but I've had better at other cafes. Now I get the whole hipster cafe appeal of Seattle and you know this place embodies that. I love that this is a small place located in an alley behind University Ave, it's just the right amount of run down. My only thing is I think they take the rude barista thing a little far, especially since he's not even that good at making coffee. I'm not one to leave a review based on one interaction with one member of the staff but unfortunately, this specific interaction was particularly disheartening. As I sit in this cafe drinking my poorly concocted latte, I am forced to reflect on how unwelcome one of these baristas made my girlfriend and I feel. I will not stoop to physical descriptions of this specific staff member but I will underline that this staff member actively taunted and patronized me. While I do admit leaving this review makes me feel slightly better, I stand by the fact that this barista needs to hop off his high horse and treat paying customers with at least faked respect. I'm sure the bearded fur trader that made my coffee for me was probably just having a bad day but I hope no one else has to have a similar experience to me. read more
