Our go to French restaurant around Atlanta. Great French and Alsatian dishes with very generous portions. The main dishes are priced in the low to mid $20s and you get a salad to start. We keep going back but we have a tough time making it through all the menu items because our go to items like boeuf bourguignon and beef Wellington but other items like the duck breast are equally good. This place is especially good on a cold winter days when you want some hot onion soup and main dishes with potato gratin or spaetzle sides. My new favorite place. We were actually on our way to a different place, when my date said, "Wanna try Cafe Alsace?" He'd been there before, I hadn't. My family is Alsacian on both sides, so I was totally into trying this place. I WAS IN HEAVEN! From the escargot, the beef wellington, the homemade lavender honey ice cream. The server with her gorgeous accent and gracious manner. It was such a wonderful evening. Of course my date was a completely great guy and a great conversationalist too. Anyway to stay on track with this review, anyone that loved the movie Amalie, or the movie Chocolate will adore this place. The owner/hostess is generates a very Juliette Binoche vibe. I'm quite the foodie, and it has been a long time since I've sound a place I would return to again and again simply because I loved it. I like trying new and different all the time. This is a place I think I will be found frequently. I didn't want to leave. And I would like to note here, that although everyone else had left and they were shutting down, the owner was very gracious and kept offering us more coffee, or wine. My boyfriend and I recently moved to the area and have slowly been trying all of the restaurants in downtown Decatur. This, so far, is one of my favorites. The lunch was delicious and affordable. Our bill was $23 (before tip) for 2 entrees and 2 drinks, which was a nice surprise after seeing their dinner prices on the door outside, which were closer to $14-15 a plate (still pretty reasonable for great French food). Several of the staff are from France, which made the experience more authentic. The cafe also sells handmade soaps and fresh jams and dressings from France - pretty cool! Overall I would definitely recommend this place. Just know that they have strange hours - open for lunch til 2:15p and then closed 'til dinner at 6p. read more

Open on Sunday evenings! Pay no attention to the posted hours on the internet. Check the restaurant's website and you will see that they are open on Sunday evenings this summer at least. They have a preset menu on Sunday nights and if tonight was any indication, go there. Now! Despite the fact that I'm pretty sure I will have to eat salads the rest of the week to make up for tonight, I wouldn't pass up the foie gras or the amazing chocolate dessert with peach sorbet----ever! The entree we chose was a trout fillet with vegetables and that was also wonderful--and practically healthy. We had a great evening here and highly recommend matching a similar meal with the Veuve Vernay rose. If you can't get to France, go here. We've been to both and see very little difference. read more

This has been on our list of places to try for a few months. Finally, we got to go when my parents came to visit. The service was impeccable. The servers were attentive, but not overbearing. The wine was fantastic. And the food was some of the best I've had in a long time. Overall, you won't go wrong and you will leave happy and full. But, the restaurant is small. There are only a few tables because of the size and they only take reservations for parties of 4 or more. (3 or less can walk in). If you're going with 4+, I recommend getting a reservation. You can walk in but the limited space may make it harder to get a table. We had 5 people with a reservation. We were there for three hours and never felt like we were being rushed to leave, despite their limited seating. We got the appetizer special, which was beautifully prepared with shaved cheese to look like flowers. My only complaint with that was that we go three slices of bread for 5 people. Two more would have been nice. The bread is Lion Tamer bread, a local bakery a few blocks from the restaurant and very good, coarse bread. All of the entrees were great. The have traditional french meals and a number of German meals. The portions were properly sized-- filling but not overly huge. Dessert, on the other hand, should be split. We each got a dessert and could have split two of them among five of us. The ice cream had three "spoons" that were each a scoop. The profiterolles had three pastries, each about two and a half inches high. That said, all of them were delicious and i would have eaten them all if I could have. Long and short of it, Cafe Alsace is excellent food, excellent service, and you will be very glad you came. read more

I realized that I was leaving a bunch of 2- and 3-star ratings for some over-hyped restaurants in Atlanta, so I had to jump in and tell you about a restaurant that deserves every ounce of accolades it receives. I've been going to Cafe Alsace consistently for 4 years now, and I have never had a single morsel that I did not love. My wife and I go for St Valentine's day every year and it's always perfect. We go to Cafe Alsace when we want to have a night out with new friends, or a special time with old friends. Everyone we have ever taken here has loved it. Everything is perfectly cooked and seasoned. The people working and waiting on us always help us pick a wine and beer with our meal. And we always end up staying for hours, finishing it all off with some wonderful dessert and a cup of coffee. You owe it to yourself to try this restaurant for dinner at least once. read more

Very disappointed. We called earlier in the week to make a reservation for Saturday at 6 for 3, were told the don't take reservations for 3 but we should have no problem getting a table at six, when they open. We showed up at 5:50 to a crowd waiting to go in. We went in, were asked if we had reservations, said no, and were seated right next to the door, where folks were standing, waiting to be seated, holding the door open, letting in super cold air and people crowded around, hovering over our table. Once everyone was seated, we saw two empty tables in the middle of the restaurant, so we asked the hostess if we could get a table away from the door, and cold air. We were told no by the hostess, so I asked for the owner who also said no, those tables were reserved. We could come back at 7:30. Seriously, two empty tables, three people ready to sit down and order, but no, those empty tables were reserved. Doesn't seem like good business practice to me. I'm sure the food is great, we had been super excited to celebrate our anniversary with a friend there. The owner's response to our situation was not in any way customer friendly, so we left. I did not and will not support this affront by the owner of Cafe Alsace. read more

My friend and I went there for dessert and were brusquely pushed to the back where we were told by a server they had a table for us and then 2 minutes later by the owner that there were no tables and a 30 minute wait. We were confused as there were two vacant tables and no people waiting in sight. We were finally sat at the only empty table (a 4 top) and then another owner (a man) came over and after we ordered, said to us "By the way there's a party of 6 coming that want this table, so, just so you know". So so rude. Basically, you guys don't count and we're just accommodating you till our real customers get here. Suffice to say, my friend and I walked out, horrified at the way were treated. Good food or not, good service to the customer is what makes a restaurant worth giving your recommendation to, and I will never ever eat at this place again or recommend it. read more

I love this restaurant. The food is really a wonderful change of pace from my usual American fare at home. The fig salad dressing is fabulous. The mauricettes at lunch are delightful. I've only been for dinner once and enjoyed the food and service. I was on an awkward date and felt the wait staff kept checking in on me-- I suppose a rude man is a tip to them to check on the woman. We dined here on a Friday Night about 9:20. ( They close @ 10 pm) I got the Salmon stuffed with crab. It was more like salmon with very little trace of crab. I would not be as mad if I did not see the same entree at the table next to me stuffed with crab. She ordered 3 minutes before us. I had five -eight lonely pieces of potato. I was basically given the scraps. The servers were nice and seemed to have real accents. The place was cozy and reminded me of my honeymoon. Will I ever go back? Hell to the nawl ! read more

carelessly prepared, under seasoned, plastic food. 1) escargot from a can, briny flavor. 2) dry and tough spaetzle 3) greasy and bland onion soup. Probably Knorr powdered bouillon, onions were not even slightly caramelized. 4) gross, greasy, grainy, bland and doughy bourguignon "red wine" sauce. Stringy and grissley meat. 5) We ordered a spaetzle dish with shrimp in it, the shrimp were not properly cleaned and peeled. There were little hard shrimp legs throughout the dish. Plus it just didn't taste like anything. Just a very bland paste. Ate a bite or two before sending it back, no offer to replace it, no offer the fix it. YET IT STILL APPEARED ON OUR BILL. We actually had to argue with the server to get it removed, amid some serious stink eye from the rasta clad line cook who angrily stared at us through the doorway to what appeared to be a very dirty and unkempt kitchen. bummer. Nice place, but no care or effort was put into our meal and at this price point it is just a tasteless rip off. read more

I've driven by here tons of times and ALWAYS seen Salon Red, but never its next-door neighbor, Cafe Alsace. A client took me here for lunch, and it is the cutest, most charming place! It's teeny-tiny, but the music is low. It's filled to the brim with French tchotckes like tea towls and carpet bags with the Eiffel Tower on them. They had a menu of quiches, crepes and a traditional sandwich made on pretzel-bread. I got a DELICIOUS steak sandwich, which came on a crusty baguette and was perfectly medium rare. If med rare's not your thing, ask for something done-r--I didn't specify that I liked medium rare. I got to choose from brie, goat, mozz or blue cheese and I went with blue. Mushrooms made it even more perfect. It came with a soup and that day's soup was an orange-tomato with French onions. I had a glass of iced blackberry tea to top it off. Overall a great place, just perfect for a few girlfriends to gather for a downtown Decatur lunch! read more

The food here is so good! This has been one of my favorite restaurants for years. It's like really great home cooking. The beef wellington and other meat based dishes are my favorite. Personally not a fan of the spaetzle, not sure why it's the popular dish here. Appetizer salad and fresh bread are great. The desserts are also really amazing - the profiteroles (what is in that chocolate sauce?!), the fruit pies, the ice cream. It was a large portion, preceded by a tasty salad and accompanied by potatoes au gratin. It was quite tasty. I love this cafe. The atmosphere is homey but interesting and the food is the same. I can't stay away from the Tartine au Jambon, which is a toasty open faced sandwich with prosciutto, caramelized apples, and a choice of goat, blue, or some other cheese that I can't remember because I always get goat cheese and it's fabulous. High quality fresh veggies in the salad complete the meal. The have great baguettes, too. read more
